Exploring in one of our vernal ponds

We are grateful to Purdue Pharma L.P. for their generous pro bono printing of our 2011/2012 Annual Report.

We hope you enjoy reviewing this annual report, which highlights the many

successful activities offered by the Stamford Museum & Nature Center in the past year. I have been privileged to serve on the Board of Directors of the Stamford Museum & Nature Center for 12 years.

I have had the opportunity to work with exceptional colleagues on the Board and among the Museum’s employees and volunteers. Special appreciation is due to Melissa H. Mulrooney, our Executive Director, who has guided the Museum with a sound vision for growth and service to the community.

It is my pleasure to welcome Bill Aron, our next President, who brings leadership, commitment and vision to this institution. Bill has the background, the skills and the enthusiasm to guide the Museum’s growth in a challenging environment. We share the goal of promoting the Museum as a destination that will educate and entertain visitors of all ages from Stamford, the surrounding towns and the region as a whole.

Again this year, we have reached deep into our communities with a focus on our mission as a family-focused museum and nature center. We continue to have staying power as a source of

educational programs, winning and smart exhibitions and special events. Our weekend festivals have attracted record crowds, with families learning about fall harvesting, spring sheep-shearing and maple syrup production while having fun on our 118-acre campus.

We can all be proud of the diligent work that has been undertaken this year as the SM&NC thrived, despite a soft economy and competitive funding landscape. Each Board and committee member deserves thanks for exceptional stewardship, generosity and collective governance skills to bring us through another successful year. My thanks go to the entire staff, in all departments, for all of the work they have done. They have brought us through some rough fall storms, literally, that challenged the museum, and they have kept our site as inviting and attractive as we could wish.

A pattern is evident here. Our community values what we present — wonderful exhibitions, enriching public events, our productive Heckscher Farm, great social gatherings, and signature education programs.

We are proud of our Stamford Museum & Nature Center. We hope to see our friends and members continue to enjoy and support all that this institution has to offer.

William M. Aron President (2012–13)

Thank you to our membership, donors and community for bringing the SM&NC to life each season, and to our Board of Directors for their governance, guidance and generosity. Together, we are committed to building upon our solid foundation as a premiere destination for family and community activity and enrichment. As we look toward the future, we are guided by an exceptional Master Plan which touches all aspects of our institution and challenges us to reach new heights and horizons. In this quest, several key themes emerge.

• We aspire to be the premiere regional center for environmental, natural, and agricultural sciences. Utilizing our extraordinary Heckscher Farm, hardwood forest trail system, and astronomy program, we seek to get our children outside, involved and connected to science and the natural world around them.

• We strive to instill a sense of wonder through our preschool, summer camp, and after-school programming. We will continue to respond to the changing educational needs and interests of our community.

Celebrating Accomplishment & Envisioning Our Future

• We are committed to enhancing our unique position as Stamford’s fine arts museum and the region’s most diverse nature-based organization. We will continue to engage our varied audiences with a growing variety of art and exhibitions designed to teach, inspire, and entertain.

• We are proud of our reputation for social engagement and recognize the vital role our facility and festivals play in building family and community ties and values.

The Stamford Museum & Nature Center is indeed a complex place with a broad range of operations and programming spanning art, history, astronomy, agriculture, and the natural sciences. Balancing all of these in an organization as diverse as ours is no easy task. As we work together to expand our vision and regional outreach, we wish to thank the entire SM&NC team for their exceptional work. It is through their care that the Stamford Museum & Nature Center is a beloved destination and it will be through their commitment that we will achieve our vision.

In the following pages you will find a variety of solid outcomes from our collective work together this 2011–12 year. As we look back, we celebrate our accomplishments and take pride in all we have achieved. By all accounts, we had a terrific year — whether measured by statistics or smiles.

We begin the 2012–13 season with energy, enthusiasm, and momentum and look forward to more exciting programs, festivals, and exhibitions. Melissa and I hope all of you will join us for another year of wonder and engagement. You and your families are vital to our success.

Here’s to another great year ahead.

OUR BEAUTIFUL SITE.If you’ve visited the SM&NC recently, you’ve certainly noticed the dramatic changes to its appearance. Our front lawn and steps leading to the Bendel Mansion have received a stunning makeover through the generous support from the City of Stamford. Take a stroll up our new steps and explore the restored statues: “The Four Seasons” and “Ruth.”

We also received a generous contribution from Barbara and Howard Malloy to improve the appearance of the meadow by creating beautiful, lush landscaping around our flagpole and a Belgian block border. These aesthetic improvements have made our site an even more pleasant and comforting place to visit.

OUR GENEROUS COMMUNITY.For yet another year, the SM&NC is grateful for the unconditional help of our 825 volunteers providing more than 8,300 hours of support. Our volunteers, who range in age from 9 to 75, assist with every aspect of the organization and are an invaluable asset to all of the staff.

Our Wine Tasting Committee is comprised entirely of volunteers. Their dedication to planning a celebratory and entertaining evening made our 15th Annual Wine Tasting a resounding success.

We also welcome our Business Affiliates members for their employee service days. Thanks to companies like GE Asset Management and Nestle Waters, our farm has a new pasture and our preschool has a new evergreen tree grove.

Thank you to all the corporate groups, students, families, and individuals who offer their help throughout the year. It’s because of you that our festivals, programs, events, and overall mission continue to thrive.

OUR EDUCATIONAL FOOTPRINT.SM&NC Aligned-With-the-Schools is one of our most successful programs, and we had a banner year in 2011–2012. More than 15,000 students participated in these programs, with 10,000 of those students coming onto the site to learn about apple cidering, maple sugaring, the life of a farmer, and the fascinating natural world all around us.

Generous funding from area foundations allows us to provide transportation for some schools that don’t have the budget for field trips. This year more than 800 students stepped onto our property via free buses — kids who otherwise might not have been able to visit a farm or walk on a nature trail if it weren’t for the kindness of our supporters. This year marked a 24% increase in overall participation from last year, and we expect this growth to continue. We are proud to be able to promote environmental stewardship among our young audiences.

OUR CULTURAL ENVIRONMENT. Our second All Aboard with Bill Probert and Friends exhibition was a holiday season sensation, bringing in a record 19,000 visitors to the galleries. Bill Probert worked tirelessly to keep the LEGO® “trainscape” constantly changing and many visitors returned again and again to see if they could find each subtle difference. This exhibition was paired once again with our Visions of Gingerbread, featuring edible winter scenes created by area organizations and bakeries. We’re looking forward to pairing these exhibitions again for another holiday treat.

This year we had many other exciting exhibitions as well, including a retrospective on American World’s Fairs and a display of artwork by renowned storyteller, designer, and illustrator Fred Marcellino.

OUR DIVERSE HERITAGE.During the spring, 33 baby animals were born on the farm — 9 lambs, 7 kids, 15 keets (guinea fowl), and 2 goslings — and we acquired eight new additions to our pastures.

These new animals lead us toward our goal of becoming a farm comprised entirely of heritage breeds — traditional breeds that were raised by farmers in the past. Many of these breeds are close to extinction now due to the industrialization of farming. Our Nigerian Dwarf goats; Monty and Moose, the new Randall calves; our Jacob sheep; and our Guinea Hogs, Lulu and Pippa, are some examples of the breeds we will be maintaining on the farm.

This initiative will not only help to save threatened breeds, but will also make our site an even more powerful learning tool as a living representation of farm life in the past.

On June 1, 2012, the SM&NC held its 15th annual wine tasting. The event honored two invaluable friends of the Museum — June Rosenthal and Aquarion Water Company.

Aquarion provides not only direct financial support for environmental programs and sponsorship of our Overbrook Orientation Center, but also expert guidance on SM&NC’s Board of Directors and standing committees.

June Rosenthal, owner and operator of Juner Properties, which merged with William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty in 2009, has been on the Board of Directors of the SM&NC for 24 years. She has been an endless source of leadership and counsel, and we are proud to have her in our family.

The Wine Tasting is always a fun, celebratory evening and this year was no exception. In addition to excellent wine, the night included a silent and live auction, a giving vine, live music, and exceptional food provided by 13 of the area’s greatest restaurants and caterers. We were happy to share the night with 340 of our members and friends, and were delighted with the chance to introduce the SM&NC to some new faces.
