    THE NECESSITY

    OF INFALLIBILITY

We find in a nasibi website that they were asked regarding

modoodi, the leader of jumaat-e-islami, this question:-

    Assalam-o-Alykum!

Why scholars have such a conflicting opinion aboutMaulana Maududis scholarship? Its confusing for a

    common Muslim like myself.

A 70-year old Indian scholar, graduate of Deoband andMadinah University, very pious and firebrand preacher, imam in a local Islamic center, often quotes MaulanaMaududi in his Friday khutba. Hes of the opinion that

Maududi was a great Islamic scholar of all times and amujaddid of the 20th century. Another scholar in the sametown, also a graduate of Deoband, decries MaulanaMaududi erudition and belittles his contribution for the revivalof Islam. The former considers Tafheemul Quran as anauthentic and intellectually written tafseer while the latterdisagrees with that claim. Why such a conflicting opinionamong Islamic scholars?

    And they replied

    And Allah Ta'ala Knows Best

    Mufti Ebrahim Desai

    FATWA DEPT.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MAWDUDI CALAMITY

In order to master any subject, it is incumbent that one remain

in the company and benefit from the master of that subject. It

is an accepted fact that for any simple or artistic occupation a

teacher or even a guide is necessary. Without these even an

intelligent and genius cannot reach the desired stage, be it in the

fields of engineering, medicine, or any other subject for that

matter. For every occupation or trade it is necessary and incumbentthat one should at least earn the basics from a teacher. In this

manner, when it is necessary to seek knowledge and guidance in

materialistic fields, how can it be possible to attain the Uloom ofNubuwwat - teachings of the Ambiyaa (Alayhis salaam) - and

the intricacies of the Shari'ah without the guidance of a tutor?

The sciences of this nature are beyond the grasp of humanintelligence. They have reached the Ummah through the Wahi

(revelation) of the Almighty, and continues through heavenly

training, rearing, divine commands, instructions and guidance. Then in these Divine Sciences the attention and considerations

of the tutor and guide; and the practical participation in hiscompany has a more important bearing than words. The

attaining of correct thinking, understanding and practical

Tarbiyah (rearing#) is more important than only attainingknowledge. On that ground, the longer the companionship of a

master, the more benefit and experience one will reap. The

more perfect the tutor, the more benefit and

excellence will be attained. As the purpose of theUloom-e-Nubuwwat is the guidance of the creation of Allah, inits understanding, there is a strong probability, through theenmity of the accursed Shaytaan, to be led astray. The Shaytaan

does not interfere where one strives to attain perfection in material

aspects. The Shaytaan sits in comfort. He does not need to

interfere, nor is it necessary for him to show his enmity. However,

where the hereafter and religion are concerned, the Shaytaan

becomes restless in creating mischief. He uses his strength in every

possible manner, where success and Hidaayat may be turned intoruin and to cause deviation from the straight path. The greatest

asset of the accursed Iblis is 'Talbis', that is to mix the truth with

falsehood in such a manner, that where a thing outwardly appearsto be beneficial, in reality it becomes a source of wrong doing and

detriment. Then too, bearing in mind that the tricks of the human

Nafs supercedes this, it is human nature to be arrogant, haughty,

deceptive, show-off and have love for rank and high status. Theseare such diseases that it is difficult to eradicate them even after

    lengthy training and discipline.

For this reason, it is incumbent to remain in thecompanionship of a master for quite some time, in order to

save oneself from the effects of the Shaytaan. If Allah's grace and mercy are present, then surely one reforms,

otherwise, the human just wanders around in the desert of

knowledge and intellectualism. After studying the Educational

History of the world, this point becomes very clear that all themischief and chaos that were created, were all at the hands of

intellectuals and geniuses. During the period of Ilm (knowledge)a greater portion of Fitna (mischief) appeared by the way of Ilm.Even among the Ulama-e-Haqq, many geniuses due to their sharp

intelligence ad accentricity became victims of their wrong thoughts

and ideas. This fact became evident that by completely relying ontheir own acuteness and flowing intellect, they became entangled

in Ilm Kibr (educational arrogance), and self-conceited of their

own views. They were not fortunate enough to undergo abeneficial amount of spiritual training. As a result, this led them to

great lengths. In our times, there exist many such examples. Since

thy possess Ilmi acumen and, as many a time they say or write

excellently, they become a cause for additional Fitnah. Those

individuals who were not fortunate enough to attain a deep

knowledge or a spiritual training, easily become their adherents

and quickly begin supporting and endorsing their new ideologies.

The Shaytaan is always busy in his occupation. A personality thatmay be of use to guide and direct the Ummah, becomes a means of

deviation and ruin for the Ummah. There are examples of these inevery era. Imaam Ghazzaaliy (Rahmatullaah Alayhi) has written inhis 'Maqaasidul Falaasifah' that after observing the correctness in

the elementary and mathematical sciences of the Greeks, the

people began to accept all their teachings as correct. They accepted

the teachings of the Greeks even in the subjects of Theology and

    6/14

natural philosophy, which led they astray. These words of Imaam

Ghazzaaly are very suprising and true. The Shaytaan finds in thesesituations an ideal opportunity to lead people astray. Well, when

the very learned, geniuses and capable can become entangled in

such Fitnahs, then those personalities who possess very little Ilmicapabilities and have a tremendous ability to write, and are quick

witted and intelligent, but void of a spiritual training under an

accomplished master they very quickly become engulfed in self-

counceitedness and begin to degrade the Ummah. All the scholarly

researches of the Ummah are despised; all the great deeds of the

Salafus-Saaliheen are made a joke of and a laughing stock; and by

criticising every personality from beginning till the end, falls in

deep and dangerous pit, becoming a means of leading all humanityinto destruction

Now, it is nice to see him speaking like this; accepting the reality

that you need some one who should be perfect, so that you can get

    the TRUTH.

    Read again what he said

The more perfect the tutor, the more benefit and excellencewill be attained. As the purpose of the Uloom-e-Nubuwwat isthe guidance of the creation of Allah, in its understanding,

there is a strong probability, through the enmity of the

accursed Shaytaan, to be led astray.

    Now, he also said

After studying the Educational History of the world, this point

becomes very clear that all the mischief and chaos that were

created, were all at the hands of intellectuals and geniuses.

And his words are a treat to read:-

how can it be possible to attain the Uloom of Nubuwwat -

teachings of the Ambiyaa (Alayhis salaam) - and the intricacies

of the Shari'ah without the guidance of a tutor? The sciences ofthis nature are beyond the grasp of human intelligence. They

have reached the Ummah through the Wahi (revelation) of theAlmighty, and continues through heavenly training, rearing,

divine commands, instructions and guidance. Then in these

Divine Sciences the attention and considerations of the tutor

and guide; and the practical participation in his company has a

more important bearing than words. The attaining of correct

thinking, understanding and practical Tarbiyah (rearing#) is

more important than only attaining knowledge.

I believe that this nasibi has told the true path. We do need a

teacher and tutor who should be perfect so that we can understand

    the truth of islam.

And I also accept that most of the mischief in the world, has

occurred through the hands of those who were learned. Therefore,

we should not believe in every scholar, rather we should look forthose who have the understanding of the divine revelations.

And I also accept that The sciences of this nature are beyond the

    grasp of human intelligence.

So what should we all do?

  • 8/9/2019 The Necessity of Infallibility

    8/14

Should we believe in you? Or those who themselves accepted that

they can be taken away by satans in their first speech?Or

Should we try to find out someone who is perfect? Someone who

has been given the ability to grasp this science? Someone whosecompany gives us protection against satan?

First of all, we see what the order of Quran is.

we find in quran; surat ul younas, verse 35

Is He then Who guides to the truth more worthy to be followed,or he who himself does not go aright unless he is guided?

so this clears the entire issue as to who should be followed

    afterwards.

Rather, if we look in quran, we find that allah forbade us to follow

people who have such habits like we find in verse 24 ofsurat ul

    insane:-

Therefore wait patiently for the command of your Lord, andobey not from among them a sinner or an ungrateful one.

And we find in surat as shoara verse 151 and 152

  • 8/9/2019 The Necessity of Infallibility

    9/14

151-And do not obey the bidding of the extravagant,

152-Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright

And then next verses are from surat al qalam

8-So do not yield to the rejecters

9-They wish that you should be pliant so they (too) would be

    pliant.10-And yield not to any mean swearer11-Defamer, going about with slander;

12-Forbidder of good, out stepping the limits, sinful

    13-Ignoble, besides all that, base-born

and then it is from surat al kahafverse 28

and do not follow him whose heart We have made unmindfulto Our remembrance, and he follows his low desires and his

case is one in which due bounds are exceeded.

So how can this ever be possible that allah can order us to followthose who have these properties, that is to say

When we read quran, we find allah ordering us in surat-un-nisa,

    verse 59

so as per this verse, allah has ordered to obey holy prophet, and

    oolil amr.

  • 8/9/2019 The Necessity of Infallibility

    10/14

So is it actually possible that they can have these properties?

Not at all. And that is why even sunni scholars like imam radi had

to accept that it is a clear order that those who have to be followed,

    should be infallible

the juzm/strength and qataa/finality with which allah hadordered to obey oolil amr, it makes it necessary that he shouldbe masoom from errors. because if he is not masoom from

error, he can order things on the basis of error; and that allah

had ordered to obey him; and thus, it would be termed HISorder. though, mistake , in terms of mistake has been

  • 8/9/2019 The Necessity of Infallibility

    11/14

forbidden. so the conclusion gets to the fact that there is clash

of amr(that is allowed thing) and nahi(forbidden thing) in one

act. and this is impossible. so it is proved that the oolil amr

whose obedience has been ordered with finality by allah, and

whose obedience has been given with strength; it is amust/WAJIB that he be made masoom from errors, and this is

a final proof that oolil amr mentioned in this verse have to be

    masoom.

    Id=1

    And even bukhari accepted that

    Volume 9, Book 89, Number 306:

    Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri:

The Prophet said, Allah never sends a prophet or gives theCaliphate to a Caliph but that he (the prophet or the Caliph) has

two groups of advisors: A group advising him to do good and

exhorts him to do it, and the other group advising him to do eviland exhorts him to do it. But the protected person (against such

evil advisors) is the one protected by Allah.

But here comes the sunni dilemma. This is because they do not

believe in infallibility, and for them, even fallible can be oolil amr.

Though it is against the order of quran, where allah mentioned that

one of the conditions of imamat is

  • 8/9/2019 The Necessity of Infallibility

    12/14

Now, what sunnis did was, that they negated this altogether, like

we find in tafsir fath-ul-qadeer, imam shokani

and no doubt, we know that numerous zalims got the status ofimamat etc,

this is the link to his tafsir:-

So coming back to the topic, what should we do?

Should we also say that we have to follow the zalims

    Or

Those who are free of sins?

Yes, there are people who are free of sins.

    And they are ahlubait.

    We find in tafsir tibri:-

Verily, Allah only wishes to keep off from you all abomination,

    O Ahl al-Bayt (Qur'an 33:33)

The verse is saying: Verily Allah only wishes to keep off from

you all evil and abominable deeds, O Ahl al-Bayt ofMuhammad, and to purify you completely of all impurity

associated with those who disobey Allah.

    And then he says

Bishr - Yazid - Sa'eed - Qatadah, who said: Verily, Allah only

wishes to keep off from you all abomination, O Ahl al-Bayt(Qur'an 33:33). They are Ahl al-Bayt. Allah purified them

from evil deeds and chose them specially for His Mercy.

Yunus - Ibn Wahb - Ibn Zayd, who said: Verily, Allah only

wishes to keep off from you all abomination, O Ahl al-Bayt

(Qur'an 33:33). He said: Al-Rijs here means Shaytan. Another

    meaning of al-Rijs is Shirk.
