The New Avant-Garde

Opportunities for Young People in the Jobless Future.

“The central question of 2025 will be: What are people for in a world that does not need their labour, and where only a minority are needed to guide the ‘bot-based’ economy?”

The Purpose.

For young people who are concerned about the so called jobless future, this presentation aims to reduce some of that stress by highlighting areas where your knowledge and skills can help you carve out a sustainable future for yourself within today's tech world.

The Observation.

More and more people are using digital devices and seem to be more intrigued by photo and video images.

While a small amount of people continue to watch television, read printed material and listen to radio, most people now use other alternatives to get their information. These alternative sources are in the cloud. The cloud is simply a network of remote servers that are connected to the Internet.

The Speculation.

The sale of camera-equipped mobile-communication devices like smart-phones and tablets has rapidly increased over the last few years and continue to show strong signs of growth.

This means that information communicated to the public via television, print, and radio, will now be communicated digitally, in an audio-visual format that can entice, capture and retain the viewer's attention. Therefore, the information-technology and mobile-telecommunications industry will continue to grow as more and more people will require equipment and technology that can read, store, and share audio-visual sets of information, alongside short text messages.

The New Avant-Garde.

In 1825, the Avant-Garde consisted of the artists, the scientists, and the industrialists. These people were given the task of presenting the new industrial world to the masses.

Today, the Avant-Garde still exist, but I prefer to call them the artists, the technologists, and the venture capitalists.

As the artists and technologists unveil the new tech world, the venture capitalists and angel investors invest more and more capital in mobile, digital-tech and social enterprises. This means that creative and tech-savvy professionals will dominate the labour market as businesses become more digital and more dependent on mobile and social media. Web designers and developers amongst others, are currently in high demand as the world needs more information architects. Information merchants (analysts, editors, researchers) who can sift through a variety of sources to find, organise, and deliver meaningful content within a simple framework that people can easily understand, will find that they are the top influencers within this new cloud-based world. Think niche!

The Architects.

People and firms that specialise in the design and development of cloud infrastructures that will allow people to access, store, and share information will reap huge rewards from this digital revolution.

Firms who design and develop software (applications) and hardware (equipment) for the creation, storage, and transfer of audio-visual sets of information will be rightly poised to take advantage. Those that can gather, analyse, and interpret the surplus stream of data from apps and devices will do tremendously well as big-data analysts. Even the real-estate industry has much to gain as more and more spaces will be required to accommodate the many servers of huge digital firms.

The Builders and Contractors.

Manufacturers, suppliers, and distributors of digital hardware will be much sought after.

Suppliers and distributors of the building materials and components required to make such products will be well rewarded. As new technology gradually makes print obsolete, the benefits to the environment will be obvious, but the flooding of the market with digital gadgets will pose a new threat. Therefore, firms who will position themselves as recyclers of used digital devices will have much to exploit. 3D printing will offer new ways of manufacturing goods. Support services like information security, infrastructure maintenance, and product repair will also prove lucrative.

The Creatives.

In today's media obsessed world, creative professionals publish huge amounts of music, photos, books, and videos for the Internet.

Consequently, influential content creators have become indispensable to marketers and advertisers. Therefore, creative industries like the arts, entertainment, and fashion will thrive as more businesses will need artistic help in making their products and services more appealing to the audio-visual public. Those who position themselves to be the creative backend of this surplus multimedia will be inundated with work. People and firms that will start-up studios for audio-visual productions, photography, and graphic design, will be much sought after by independent content creators.

The Open World.

As the world moves towards being more inclusive and transparent, open systems and crowd initiatives will become more commonplace.

People will have the power and the tools to pool their talent and resources. Professionals with shared interests will band together in niches and form companies where they can openly exchange ideas and co-create. Angel investors will also band together and become venture capitalists that fund a wide variety of businesses. Open-systems will allow the users of a company's product to create and sell new products powered by the company's infrastructure. Simply put, companies will be more open to accepting the innovative and sustainable ideas of the people that actually make use of their products and services.

Where Do You See Yourself?

The Cloud, Mobile, and Social have all had a profound effect on banking, commerce, enterprise, and the media. In the same way, they are now driving change within education by providing cloud-based platforms and software that allow students and teachers to communicate clearer and faster. This trend will extend further into health, construction, and transportation. All these industries represent opportunities for young people to get involved with and forge good careers for themselves. Recent government support for the expansion of tech-initiatives in the United Kingdom is a sure sign of where things are headed.

So where do you see yourself? Are you the artist, the technologist, or the venture capitalist? Whichever suits you best, try not to worry too much about the jobless future. You are the new advance guards!

Find your passion, find your feet, and find a way to make ends meet.
