The Blessing of the Advent WreathThe Blessing of the Advent WreathThe Blessing of the Advent WreathThe Blessing of the Advent Wreath

Leader: Almighty and Eternal God, to whom belong the time and the ages. You call to us

“Behold, today is the time to rise from sleep. Harden not your hearts today.”

Today you grant us the grace to enter the cycle of another church year. We beseech you,

bless this wreath of interwoven branches. Grant that the coming year may be for us a year

of grace, and a branch in the glorious crown that awaits us, when we should have reached

our full growth in Christ.

(The Wreath may be Sprinkled with Holy Water)

The Lighting of the Advent CandleThe Lighting of the Advent CandleThe Lighting of the Advent CandleThe Lighting of the Advent Candle

Leader: The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand.

Leader lights the first candle (opposite the Rose or Pink Candle) in silence.

Leader: Our Lord says “Surely I come quickly.”

Response: Even so, come, Lord Jesus!

Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God

Response: It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Leader: May this light remind us of the One who is the true light that enlightens every-

one who comes in to the world. In the same way that each Advent Sunday will see

another light shining on this wreath, may we also grow in Christ’s love and prepare our-

selves to share in your eternal glory.

Response: “Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness and put on

the armor of light.” The Kingdom of God is drawing near. May we prepare our hearts

with God’s peace, God’s justice, and God’s love.

Leader: We bless you, Eternal Father, giver of all good things, for the coming of your

Son into the world, Your Kingdom has begun, and at his second coming in glory it will be

complete. Grant us true repentance and a living faith in his good news, that on the day, we

may be found acceptable servants of Christ our King.

Response: Amen.

THE COLLECT - 1st Sunday of Advent (Page 157 BCP)

Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness and put on the armour of

light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in

great humility; that in the last day, when He shall come again in His glorious majesty to

judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through Him who

lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

REFLECTION FIRST LESSON: In our Old Testament lesson the prophet Isaiah sets

forth a majestic vision of a time when people throughout the world will worship the

Lord and live in peace with one another.

March and Rally on December 28, 2013. The theme for this year is “Answering the

Silent Cry: Making the Broken Whole”.

As with previous years, we are asking persons to bring items to be donated to organisa-

tions involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS, as we, the youth of the Anglican Church

seek to mobilise persons in our society to assist these persons. We are especially asking

churches to have collections done in their churches with a view to bringing them to

Independence Square on the evening of the Rally.

The march will take the form of a procession of witness from the Jubilee Gardens to

Independence Square. We are inviting you and your members to join us in Jubilee

Gardens at approximately 4:30 pm for the march and also for the Rally in Independence

Square.

1st LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Melissa Stevenson 9:15a.m. - Peter Bowen

FIRST LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): FIRST LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): FIRST LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): FIRST LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): Isaiah 2:1-5

The word which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. It shall

come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be

established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; and all the

nations shall flow to it, and many peoples shall come, and say: "Come, let us go up to the

mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and

that we may walk in his paths." For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the

Lord from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide for many

peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning

hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord.

REFLECTION THE PSALM: A pilgrim’s song of praise and prayer for the peace of

Jerusalem.

PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: 122 (7:30a.m. - page 641 BCP)

1. I WAS glad when they said unto me : We will go into the house of the Lord.

2. Our feet shall stand in thy gates : O Jerusalem.

3. Jerusalem is built as a city : that is at unity in itself.

4. For thither the tribes go up, even the tribes of the Lord : to testify unto Israel, to give

thanks unto the Name of the Lord.

5. For there is the seat of judgement : even the seat of the house of David.

6. O pray for the peace of Jerusalem : they shall prosper that love thee.

7. Peace be within thy walls : and plenteousness within thy palaces.

8. For my brethren and companions’ sakes : I will wish thee prosperity.

9. Yea, because of the house of the Lord our God : I will seek to do thee good.

REFLECTION SECOND LESSON: In this reading Paul summarizes the heart of the

law and urges a way of life in full awareness of the nearness of salvation.

2nd LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Vincent Broomes 9:15a.m. - Men’s Fellowship

SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): Romans13:8-14

Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has

fulfilled the law. The commandments, "You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill,

You shall not steal, You shall not covet," and any other commandment, are summed up in

this sentence, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." Love does no wrong to a

neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. Besides this you know what hour it is,

how it is full time now for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than

when we first believed; the night is far gone, the day is at hand. Let us then cast off the

works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us conduct ourselves becomingly as

in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in

quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the

flesh, to gratify its desires.

GRADUAL HYMN - 42

REFLECTION THE GOSPEL: In the Gospel Jesus tells his disciples of the need for

readiness because the Son of Man will come at a day and hour which no one knows. People will continue to go about their usual affairs, when suddenly this time of judgment

will happen. Disciples are to be ever watchful, imagining themselves like a householder

whose alertness could prevent a robbery.

THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: 24:37-44

On the Mount of Olives, Jesus said to his disciples privately, “As were the days of Noah,

so will be the coming of the Son of man. For as in those days before the flood they were

eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered

the ark, and they did not know until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be

the coming of the Son of man. Then two men will be in the field; one is taken and one is

left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one is taken and one is left. Watch there-

fore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the

householder had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have

watched and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be

ready; for the Son of man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

THE NICENE CREED - Page 104

Bidding Prayer

Let us pray, as we prepare for the coming of the Lord.

May the Church be faithful and vigilant, ever on guard against evil, and as a good servant,

ready for the Master's call...At this Advent time, grant to her ministers and all her people

the grace to prepare in prayer and meditation for the coming Nativity.

Speak to a heedless world where many have ceased to learn from the past the signs of

future danger....Be merciful to those who fail in the duty laid upon them for guidance of

others and open their eyes to follow the right path.

In all we do, in all our work, in our homes, in our times of quiet, let us so live that we are

ready without fear for the call of God...Grant to those we love the grace of lives fitly

offered.

Have mercy on those who have no future hope, those who value the passing moment

beyond its worth, those who through pain and sorrow have ceased to care for what is to

come...Give them the assurance that this present world is not the end.

We pray for those who have already been called to the future judgement and the future

peace, for those who came with joyful expectation into the divine presence, and for those

who came bewildered and unprepared...May the love of God enfold them all.

May our prayers be acceptable through Christ the Lord who has come, is present here and

will come again. Amen.
