THE COLLECTS - Proper 28 (Page 181 BCP) Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

REFLECTION FIRST LESSON: In our opening lesson the prophet proclaims the

hastening approach of the day of the Lord, a day of judgment and fearful distress.

1st LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Janice Hassig 9:15a.m. - Yvette Hoyte

FIRST LESSON (OLD TESTAMENT): Zephaniah 1:7, 12-18

Be silent before the Lord God! For the day of the Lord is at hand; the Lord has prepared a sacrifice and consecrated his guests. At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish the men who are thickening upon their lees, those who say in their hearts, `The Lord will not do good, nor will he do ill.' Their goods shall be plundered, and their houses laid waste. Though they build houses, they shall not inhabit them; though they plant vineyards, they shall not drink wine from them." The great day of the Lord is near, near and hastening fast; the sound of the day of the Lord is bitter, the mighty man cries aloud there. A day of wrath is that day, a day of distress and anguish, a day of ruin and devastation, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness, a day of trumpet blast and battle cry against the fortified cities and against the lofty battlements. I will bring distress on men, so that they shall walk like the blind, because they have sinned against the Lord; their blood shall be poured out like dust, and their flesh like dung. Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them on the day of the wrath of the Lord. In the fire of his jealous wrath, all the earth shall be consumed; for a full, yea, sudden end he will make of all the inhabitants of the earth.

REFLECTION THE PSALM: The psalmist reflects on the passing character of human

life in the face of the Lord’s wrath, and asks the everlasting God for wisdom to make

use of time..

PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: 90 (7:30a.m. - Page 587 BCP)

1. Lord, thou hast been our refuge : from one generation to another. 2. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever the earth and the world were made : thou art God from everlasting, and world without end. 3. Thou turnest man to destruction : again thou sayest, Come again, ye children of men. 4. For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday : seeing that is past as a watch in the night. 5. As soon as thou scatterest them they are even as a sleep : and fade away suddenly like the grass. 6. In the morning it is green, and groweth up : but in the evening it is cut down, dried up

Page 3: The new fisherman november 16th, 2014

3

and withered. 7. For we consume away in thy displeasure : and are afraid at thy wrathful indignation. 8. Thou hast set our misdeeds before thee : and our secret sins in the light of thy countenance. 9. For when thou art angry all our days are gone : we bring our years to an end, as it were a tale that is told. 10. The days of our age are threescore years and ten; and though men be so strong that they come to fourscore years : yet is their strength then but labour and sorrow; so soon passeth it away, and we are gone. 11. But who regardeth the power of thy wrath : for even thereafter as a man feareth, so is thy displeasure. 12. So teach us to number our days : that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. 13. Turn thee again, O Lord, at the last : and be gracious unto thy servants. 14. O satisfy us with thy mercy, and that soon : so shall we rejoice and be glad all the days of our life. 15. Comfort us again now after the time that thou hast plagued us : and for the years wherein we have suffered adversity. 16. Shew thy servants thy work : and their children thy glory. 17. And the glorious majesty of the Lord our God be upon us : prosper thou the work of our hands upon us, O prosper thou our handywork. REFLECTION SECOND LESSON: In this reading Paul counsels the new disciple to

be alert as in the daylight, for the day of the Lord will come swiftly and unexpectedly,

although at a time unknown to mortals.

2nd LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Joan Hinds 9:15a.m. - Church Army

SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-10

As to the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. When people say, "There is peace and security," then sudden destruction will come upon them as travail comes upon a woman with child, and there will be no escape. But you are not in darkness, brethren, for that day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all sons of light and sons of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober. For those who sleep sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. But, since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us so that whether we wake or sleep we might live with him.

GRADUAL HYMN - 314

REFLECTION THE GOSPEL: Our Gospel is the parable of the servants who made

different uses of the money entrusted to them. The evangelist intends the story to be

instructive to Christian disciples. The master Jesus is now away. When he returns, he will

expect his followers to have made diligent use of the faith he has left in their charge. If it

has not grown, then it has been without value and will be taken away. One also

recognizes how immense are the sums left with the servants. The parable warns against

the false security of only guarding the traditions and not investing them in life and in

others

THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: Matthew 25:14-15, 19-29

Jesus said, "The Kingdom of heaven will be as when a man going on a journey called his

servants and entrusted to them his property; to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, `Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.' His master said to him, `Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.' And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, `Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more.' His master said to him, `Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faith-ful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.' He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, `Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not winnow; so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.' But his master answered him, `You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sowed, and gather where I have not winnowed? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has the ten talents. For to every one who has will more be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.

Bidding Prayer

Let us pray that the gifts of God may be rightly used.

Bless the Church with generosity and care for all…Give grace to your people so to use all that has been entrusted to them that they may bring new hope to many and show forth the glory of God.

Bring to a world where dealing is often hard and competitive the spirit of compassion, so that those who gain much may share more generously…Give wisdom to the rich to know that all wealth is the gift of God.

Help us to value more gratefully the gifts we have been given, to develop and to use them for the good of others…Guide with wisdom those who are responsible for the finances of this community.

Have mercy on the poor who have nothing they can develop to ease their burden, and guide them to ways where they may find relief…Raise up from despair those who know they have not fulfilled what they might have done, and open to them again the way they have lost.

We pray for those who have completed their task in this world and have entered into the joy of their Master….May they rest in the peace promised to his faithful servants.

We pray as the servants of Christ from whom all good things come. Amen.

Church Army Prayer

O Lord our heavenly father whose son Jesus Christ came not to be ministered unto but to minister, we ask to bless all members of the Church Army in this and other lands that following in the steps of your son and giving themselves to the service of their fellow-men, they may be inspired by your love and so worthily minister in your name, to the fallen, the friendless, and the needy for the sake of the same your son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Condolences

We extend condolences to the Worrell and Small families at the death of Leslie Worrell. Mr. Worrell served as Treasurer and Lay Reader at the Church. We also extend condolences to Dr. Carlisle Goddard and family at the death of his grand-mother Doris Harris who was buried on Tuesday last week.

Fellowship Day

What a day last Sunday for our Fellowship Day. Thanks to all who attended; and special thanks to Dr. Ian Rock, the Students and Staff of Codrington College who went out of their way to accommodate us. Truly, a wonderful experience for all who participated.

Organizations are asked to start their planning for next year. This is to facilitate a meeting of the Pastoral Committee.

Persons needing envelopes for 2015 are asked to give their names to the Rector. Thanks to all members who have adjusted to the monthly envelope system. This continues to be working well, as we have been able to reduce the cost of the envelopes and also the wastage. The persons responsible for the counting of money on Sundays are finding the job much easier.

We are in the process of assembling a tent to house the playground for the Day Care Centre. The tent has been donated by Mrs. Regine Sixt and her Charity “Drying Little Tears” will provide the equipment for the area.

Pink Sunday

The Third Sunday in Advent is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, with the lighting of the Rose Candle in the Advent Wreath. This year it is our intention to focus on the subject of Breast Cancer, which is a challenge for many women in our society and Church. It is hoped that we will use ‘Pink’ as the liturgical colour for the day; with the Mothers’ Union donating a pink chasuble to be worn by the Clergy on the day. Two pink stoles, matching Burse and Chalice Veil will be much appreciated. With members wearing pink to show solidarity and prayerful support of sufferers. This gives a wonderful opportunity to bring our liturgy in line with this important aspect of human life. I am asking for your support in making this a meaningful celebration.

Casual Sunday

The Sunday before Christmas, the Fourth Sunday of Advent will be celebrated as casual Sunday. We are invited to wear jeans and T/shirts.

Smile: A burglar alarm goes off in the middle of the night, and the police arrived just in time to collar the burglar as he was leaving the premises with a big bag full of loot. Soon, he was in court, facing a grim-looking judge. "Did you have an accomplice?" asked the judge. "What's an accomplice?" replied the crook. "A partner. In other words, did you commit this crime by yourself?" "Of course," replied the culprit. "Who can get reliable help these days?"
