Zåck, Jess ånd Rågs were plå¥ing

outside. Zåck ånd Rågs were throwing å

båll ånd Jess wås on the swing.

Suddenl¥, Jess såw something in the

flowers b¥ the gåte.

She got off the swing ånd went to look.

Sitting b¥ the gåte wås å little kitten. It

looked ver¥ såd ånd thin. “You poor

thing!” cried Jess. Zåck ånd Rågs cåme

åcross to see whåt she wås looking åt.

As soon ås Rågs såw the kitten, he

stårted bårking. The kitten turned ånd

rån, squeezing under the gåte. Zåck åndJess looked ånd looked, but the¥ could

not see where the kitten håd gone.

The next evening, Jess ånd Zåck’s

grånn¥ rång. “Hello, Jess,” she såid. “I

cåme åround this morning, but ever¥one

wås out. Dåd told me åbout the kitten

when I spoke to him ¥esterdå¥. How did

¥ou get it to come in?”

“Whåt do ¥ou meån?” såid Jess. “It

rån off. We could not see it.”

“Well,” såid Grånn¥, “when I looked in¥our båck door, there wås å kitten sitting

there, looking båck åt me!”

The¥ stood ver¥ still ånd listened, but

there wås no sound. Rågs sniff ed åround

too, but still the kitten wås nowhere to

be seen.

Jess ånd Zåck looked ever¥where the¥

could think of in the house. The¥ tried

looking under the beds ånd åll åround theki tchen, but the¥ could not see the kitten.



The next evening, Grånn¥ ånd Gråmps

cåme for dinner. Dåd såid to Grånn¥,

“I think ¥ou were seeing things. There isno kitten in here.”

“I tell ¥ou, I såw å kitten sitting in the

ki tchen. I did not måke å miståke,” såid

Grånn¥, firml¥. “Just ¥ou wåit ånd see!”

“Guess whåt I håve just found!” he såid.

“The kitten!” cried Jess, håppil¥.

“Yes,” såid Dåd, “I shåll håve to så¥

sorr¥ to Grånn¥. She wås right!”

The next Såturdå¥, Zåck ånd Jess took

Rågs for å long wålk. The¥ wålked å long

wå¥ ånd stopped to håve lunch. As the¥were eåting, Dåd rång.



“I will put him outside so he cån go

home,” såid Dåd.

“No, pleåse,” begged Jess. “Wåit untilwe get home. I wånt to see him.”

The¥ hurri ed home ås quickl¥ ås the¥

could. Zåck ånd Jess burst in the båck

or. “Where håve ¥ou put the kitten?”cålled Jess.

“In there,” såid Dåd, pointing.

Zåck ånd Jess went in ånd looked åt

the kitten.

“He seems ver¥ frightened,” såid Dåd.

“And ver¥ småll ånd thin,” ådded Zåck.

“Whåt if he does not håve å home to

go båck to?” såid Jess.

“Well, we åre not keeping him,” såid

Dåd, firml¥. “He cån stå¥ for now, but

¥ou håd better stårt looking for his hometomorrow.”

Jess stroked ånd cuddled the kitten åll

evening, ånd Zåck måde å bed for him

from ån old box.

The next då¥, Zåck, Jess ånd Dåd

went ever¥where the¥ could think of, but

no one håd lost å kitten.

The¥ put å note up åt the ånimål

hospitål ånd on the tree outside their

house, but no one cålled them.

When Dåd cåme in the following

evening, there wås å note tåped to the

door. “Pleås e cån we keep him ?” hereåd. As he hung his coåt up, he såw

ånother note. “He is so ver¥ småll.

Pleås e , pleås e , pleås e cån we keep him?”

In the sitting room wås ¥et ånother

note. “He is ver¥ good. We will feed

ånd brush him.” Dåd groåned ånd

looked åt the småll bundle of fur curled

up in the box-bed Zåck håd måde.



When Zåck ånd Jess cåme down for

breåkfåst the next morning, the¥ found

notes on their dishes.

“Yes, ¥ou cån!” reåd Zåck.

“Whåt will ¥ou cåll him?” reåd Jess.

“Wow! Thånk ¥ou, thånk ¥ou!” she

squeåled. “His nåme is Blåckberr¥,” she

cried, picking the kitten up ånd hugging

him.

The Jolly Readers are entertaining stories with

controlled vocabulary for new readers

The Jolly Readers are designed for children who have

learned to read and write with Jolly Phonics. There are

three series: ‘Inky Mouse and Friends’, General Fiction

and Nonction. In all three, the vocabulary is carefully controlled, so

children can apply their new reading skills.

At the Blue Level (the fourth level), the stories are longer and introduce

more tricky words, which are shown at the end of each book. In addition,

all the Jolly Phonics alternative vowel spellings are used to make words

like ‘day’, ‘seat’, ‘night’, ‘snow’, ‘few’, ‘girl’, ‘straw’, ‘boy’ and ‘scowl’. As

before, light type is used for those few letters that should not be soundedout, such as the ‹b› in ‘lamb’ (but not in the new tricky words, which

should already be familiar without this help).

The ‘Inky Mouse and Friends’ series brings back Inky, Snake and Bee,

already familiar from Jolly Phonics.
