PERSPECTIVES

Beef up trade

cooperation

* Oppose those relying on external elements, acting as stooges, holding negative views* Oppose those trying to jeopardize stability of the State and progress of the nation* Oppose foreign nations interfering in internal affairs of the State* Crush all internal and external destructive elements as the common enemy

People’s Desire

Trading is a vehicle for economic growth.

Global nations are vying for their economic

development. They are trying to increase exploi-

tation of their natural resources and production

of machines and machine parts, cars, agricul-

tural produce and livestock to penetrate the

international market.

At such a time, all the people are to make

concerted efforts to achieve strong economy.

Trade plays a crucial role in Myanmar's eco-

nomic progress, so measures are being taken to

promote trade cooperation by signing bilateral

trade agreements and border trade agreements

with other countries.

In the past, foreign trade was carried out

by means of waterways through Yangon Port.

But now it can be carried out by land. Muse

105th Mile Trade Zone, Myawady Trade Sta-

tion, Tamu Trade Station and Maungtaw Bor-

der Trade Station are along the borders with the

neighbouring countries, and they are carrying

out normal trade through inland routes.

Trade volume of border trade centres

from January to November, 2009 stood at more

than 1 billion US dollars. Eighty percent of their

trade volume was carried out by way of normal

trade.

The border trade centers export agricul-

tural products such as rice, corn, beans and

pulses, sesame, fruit, sawn rubber timber and

raw rubber, livestock products, marine prod-

ucts, minerals, jade and gems and forest prod-

ucts. Iron and steel construction materials, ma-

chine and machine parts, cars and spare parts,

computers and accessories, farm equipment and

consumer goods are being imported from the

neighbouring nations.

Now, bilateral trade and economic coop-

eration and investment issues are under discus-

sion with entrepreneurs from China, Thailand,

India and Vietnam. Services of trade zones are

also picking up. In line with the rules of normal

trade, departmental officials and entrepreneurs

on their part are to try to produce quality export

items that are marketable.

IEDs, along with sui-cide bomb attacks, are the

The bombs, made prin-cipally from fertilizer anddetonated by remote con-trol, can range up to 2,000pounds (900 kilogrammes),a senior US military intelli-gence official said recently, destroying even the heavi-est armoured vehicles.

The southern provincesof Helmand and Kandaharare the most violent, but theTaleban has spread its fightto previously peaceful re-

CHICAGO, 16 Jan—USairlines, set to start report-ing quarterly losses nextweek, are likely to offermore evidence of return-ing business travel de-mand as the industrygropes its way out of the2009 economic recession.

Lower fares had been afeature of the year. “Wewere in a recession, so weneed people to come backto fly so they’ve been low-ering prices,” Alukos said.

The airline industrysuffered in 2009 from alack of demand for busi-ness travel as companiestrimmed travel budgets tohold down costs. But air-line executives say theysaw signs of recovery intravel demand on the busi-ness side in the quarter.

vines produced in the rainyseason are less sweet. So,the grapevines are not har-vested in the rainy season.Soon after the grapes areplucked, all the branchesof the vines are to be cutoff. The fruits on the newbranches are collected forthe next time.

The best ph rate togrow vines is between 5.5and 6.5, so natural ferti-lizer is put on the soil fourtimes, and chemical ferti-lizer, two times a year. Inthe tight rope method, fer-

tilizers are put one and ahalf feet around, and in thetrellis method, three feetaround each vine.

Anti-fungus and pes-ticides are sprayed one timebetween 7 to 10 days in therainy season, and one timebetween 10 and 14 days inthe cold season.

Alcohol during pregnancychemically alters fetal DNACANBERRA, 16 Jan — Drinking too much during

pregnancy can harm offspring permanently. Now ex-periments in mice suggest this may be because alco-hol chemically alters the fetus’s DNA, affecting howgenes are expressed.

It’s well known that fetal alcohol syndrome occurswhen pregnant women drink excessively and causesbehavioural and physical harm to the child after birth. But we know little about the molecular mechanismsunderlying the condition.

Previous studies have shown that factors in themother’s environment during pregnancy can cause“epigenetic” modifications to the fetus’s DNA. Thesedon’t alter the genetic code itself but might switchcertain genes on or off, or increase or decrease theirexpression.
