paper published in the August 20 issue of PhysicalReview Letters, Dartmouth researchers propose a newway of creating a reproduction black hole in thelaboratory on a much-tinier scale than their celestialcounterparts.

The new method to create a tiny quantum sizedblack hole would allow researchers to better understandwhat physicist Stephen Hawking proposed more than35 years ago: black holes are not totally void ofactivity; they emit photons, which is now known asHawking radiation.

"Hawking famously showed that black holes radiateenergy according to a thermal spectrum," said PaulNation, an author on the paper and a graduate studentat Dartmouth. "His calculations relied on assumptionsabout the physics of ultra-high energies and quantumgravity. Because we can't yet take measurementsfrom real black holes, we need a way to recreate thisphenomenon in the lab in order to study it, to validateit."

Swine flu looms over global economic recovery

WASHINGTON, 23 Aug — Markets around the globehave started to celebrate the first signs of economicrecovery, but experts have warned that a possibleresurgent swine flu could still take a toll of productivityand financial systems.

First reported four months ago, the new A(H1N1)influenza virus spread by June into a global pandemicwith some 1,800 deaths and now affects more than 170countries, according to the World Health Organization.

Though the number of cases reported to WHO hastopped 182,000, the United Nations health watchdogcautions the real number is higher because countriesare no longer required to test and report individual cases.

Health officials are gearing up for a resurgence incases as the northern hemisphere enters winter. So farswine flu infections generally have been relatively mild, with typical flu symptoms that last about a week.

However, the pandemic virus could mutate into amore deadly form. Officials are projecting a shortfallin vaccines being rushed to market in hopes of wardingoff a potential global health disaster.

Faced with the unpredictable nature of flu viruses, economists say it is difficult to assess the impact ofswine flu on the delicate global economic recoverytaking shape amid the worst world recession sinceWorld War II.

“As the severity of A(H1N1) is so far not severe,we would not expect the magnitude of the shock to theeconomy to be large relative to GDP (gross domesticproduct),” said Simonetta Nardin, a spokeswoman atthe International Monetary Fund.—Internet

NEW DELHI, 23 Aug — With the pro-duction of food grains and agriculturalcommodities set to fall because ofdrought, Indian government will importthose items that will be in short supply tomeet the demand, and a top governmentofficial told the media on Saturday.

“Decision is already there that which-ever commodity will be in short supply,to maintain demand-supply mechanism,we shall go for imports,” FinanceMinister Pranab Mukherjee said.

He said that there is already ashort supply of pulses and edible

oil in the market.Mukherjee, however, said that the gov-

ernment will not announce the timing ofthe import to ensure that prices are notjacked up artificially by the internationalplayers.

“The moment news is spread that In-dia is going for big import, the marketprices are jacked up,” he said.

On the impact of drought, the FinanceMinister said that “it does not affect onlyproduction, it has an overall cascadingimpact. Scanty rainfall will affect rechargeof ground water.”—Xinhua

More efforts urgedto combat drought

BEIJING, 23 Aug—China’s anti-drought authorityhas demanded more efforts to fight drought in thenorth, and warned possible drought in the south asaffected regions continued to experience high tem-peratures and less rainfall.

Return to sender: two Austrians rescued from mailboxAustrian authorities aren’t about to give these pranks their stamp of approval.Frustrated officials say rescuers have been deployed twice this week to break

open large mailboxes after two children locked themselves inside in separateincidents.

Firefighters in the westernmost province of Vorarlberg say the latest incidentoccurred in the village of Schwarzach, where an 8-year-old boy climbed inside amailbox and couldn’t get out.

Postal officials weren’t able to find the key, so rescuers used welding torchesand bolt cutters to open the box and free the child. He was uninjured.

Authorities say an almost identical incident happened in nearby Feldkirch, where a 4-year-old boy locked himself inside a mailbox.

An unheated piece of silcrete stone, left, is contrasted with an ancientstone tool that was shaped from

silcrete. The stone changed color andtexture after being heated and

chipped into an implement. Newanalyses of such artifacts suggest the

technology of using heat to maketools was being used in Africa at least

72,000 years ago.

People in southern Africa 72,000 yearsago heated stones in preparation fortoolmaking.

Stone Age toolmakers didn’t needmotivational speakers to get fired up atwork. People living on the southern tip ofAfrica 72,000 years ago decided on theirown to heat stones with carefully controlledfires in order to make the rock moresuitable for tool manufacturing, a newstudy finds.

Coastal residents of southern Africamay even have heated stones as a first stepin toolmaking as early as 164,000 yearsago, say Kyle Brown, an anthropologygraduate student at the University of CapeTown, South Africa, and his colleagues.

Until now, evidence of heat treatmentextended back no further than about 25,000years ago in Europe, Brown’s team notesin the 14 Aug Science.

Parasites persuade immune cells to invite them in for dinnerSCIENCE DAILY, 23 Aug—The para-

sites that cause leishmaniasis use aquirky trick to convince the immunesystem to effectively invite them intocells for dinner, according to a newstudy published today in PLoS Patho-gens. The researchers, from Imperial

College London, say their findings im-prove understanding of the way Leish-mania parasites establish an infectionand could aid the search for a vaccineagainst this neglected tropical disease.

Leishmania parasites are transmittedby sand flies. After the parasites infect asand fly, they make a sticky gel so thatwhen the fly bites a human, it regurgitatesthis gel into the body. Today's research, which was funded by the WellcomeTrust, shows that the gel persuadesimmune cells known as macrophages tofeed the parasites, rather than killingthem.
