15th AnniversaryOctober 13, 1999 - the very first issue named AUK Student
Newspaper came out.November 24, 1999 - the first official issue of The Star
came out when we were just kids; I was only 4 years old. The Star is the first name of our newspaper: AUCA student Zul-fiya Abdulldaeva won the competition of naming the student newspaper. “Stars, like critical thinkers, are not swayed by passing tides like leaves in a wind, but follow their paths dis-criminately,” says the first issue.
2006 - Boxes column was established, where students could write anything they wanted to say.
2007-2008 - Farewell Kiss was established, a column dedicated to our AUCA star seniors. Just like Boxes, this col-umn doesn’t lose its popularity year by year.
2008 - The Star changed to New Star. New Star became an independent student newspaper and was officially regis-tered at the Ministry of Justice. New Star was given the Best Student Newspaper 2008 Award at the Journalism Associa-tion contest in Kyrgyzstan.
2013 – a Facebook page was created by the present team.February 5, 2014 - New Star changed to The New Star as
the new design and style was developed.2014 – a Twitter account, a YouTube channel (starting
this year we have a good video team), Issuu.com account (for online reading), Ask.fm account for Boxes (a box in Bravo was destroyed by our students), and a Google account were created for more effective ways to communicate with student body.
We do not work for AUCA administration or the Student Senate; we independently decide on our content that sup-ports ideas of democracy. Sometimes the newspaper has in-fluence on AUCA reforms, because our administration does read the newspaper to be informed about students’ opinions and problems. We welcome students who can and want to say something out loud. Don’t be afraid of using your democ-racy.

Lost and Found column is a nice idea, but the problem is that our newspaper is issued only two times a month. The information about lost or found things may be outdated. Facebook posts actually do work. You can come to Room 104 or find us on Facebook, and ask for help – we can post your message on our New Star FB page. If it is not enough for some students, of course, the Lost and Found board is also a good and affordable idea. You can contact senators directly, since they have an AUCA Student Senate page on Facebook now, too.

Привет, мой читатель! Сегодня все мои мысли об одной девице. В общем, наблюдаю я за ней уже больше года и скажу одно – она меня бесит. Точнее, бесит то, что она говорит, как она все это говорит и как гордится этим. Ее фразы «я не такая как все», «не знаю почему, но все меня считают странной», «у меня богатый внутренний мир», «все в этом мире носят маски, одна я такая, какая есть», «вы – стадо, а я личность», «меня все называют хипстером». ХИПСТЕРОМ! Вот именно в этот момент я понял, что эта девочка меня бесит!
Давай разберемся: по сути, ты типичная среднестатистическая студентка АУЦА. Что ты сделала такого, чтобы называть себя личностью, а других стадом? Что тебя отличает от других, кроме твоих «гениальных» фраз? О каком богатом внутреннем мире может идти речь, если все, что ты говоришь, взято с дешевых пабликов ВКонтакте? Ответ на все – НИЧЕГО. Именно ничего не делает тебя уникальной, потому что то, как ты говоришь про свою уникальность, показывает насколько ты неуникальна.
Я знаю этих странных людей, которые просто ведут себя странно или одеваются странно, но они никак не кричат об этом на каждом углу. А ты то и дело говоришь о своей странности и уникальности, одеваешься безвкусно, как ты думаешь «в стиле хипстера», и всегда имеешь свое мнение на все – в основном, это просто полная противоположность тому, что считают другие. И большую часть, я уверен, ты так не считаешь на самом деле, тебе просто в кайф думать о своем «уникальном» мнении и идти против. А против чего ты идешь? Против системы? Фигово ты идешь, дорогая. В общем, суть в том, что если ты это читаешь, и ты узнала себя в этом описании, то знай, ты бесишь меня! Бесишь многих!

Порой мне кажется, что АУЦА – это обитель вечно недовольных студентов. Жалобы о том, как ужасна и несправедлива к ним жизнь, стали уже неотъемлемой частью наших студенческих будней. У многих это просто вошло в привычку. А самое ужасное то, что в большинстве случаев причины этих самых жалоб такие незначительные! Плохая погода, наступили на обувь в общественном транспорте, кто-то не так посмотрел, не то сказал и т.д. Не позволяйте же таким мелочам портить ваш день, не тратьте свои нервы. Такого рода вещи не стоят вашего внимания.
В то время как одни накручивают себе несуществующие проблемы, другие не могут высказаться о реальных. Очень часто становлюсь свидетелем того, как студенты выражают свои недовольства по поводу предметов, методов преподавания или системы образования в целом. В этом нет ничего плохого. Напротив, это говорит о заинтересованности и вовлеченности студентов в процесс обучения. Беда лишь в том, что все эти разговоры так и остаются в коридорах. Проблемы не уйдут сами по себе. Надо, чтобы они доходили до администрации, в чьих руках изменить что-либо, найти способы их решения. Так что не бойтесь, друзья, высказывайте свои мнения, предлагайте свои идеи. Воспользуйтесь своим правом голоса. Какая же это демократия, если народ сам не хочет говорить?
Напоследок хочу всем сказать, чтобы вы перестали жаловаться на свою жизнь и, оглянувшись, осознали, что всё не так уж и плохо. Поменяйте свое отношение к происходящему вокруг. Помните: вы являетесь хозяевами своей жизни, и только от вас самих зависит, будете ли вы довольны ею или нет.

To all book lovers…We are used to reading on tablets and laptops.
However, those who like to go to our lovely library, take some hard copies and read them, leafing through the pages and enjoying it.
It is definitely good that people want to grow and they study hard, but there is one thing every student needs to remember in his or her mind forever: books from the library are not your personal books! When you take one from there, you cannot highlight or underline words and paragraphs with a pen or even a pencil. You can’t write any notes. You are not allowed to do anything with these books except for reading
them.
It’s going to be extremely painful to read a new book with many pen marks on its pages, only be-cause some “Sherlock” was selfishly spoiling it for his own purposes. Trust me, it’s not just a big struggle to read such books, but you are also spoiling the property of the university, and slowly but surely destroy very great data collection for future generation students.
Do whatever you want with your own notebook, laptop or TV set, but, for goodness sake, stop making lives of other students even harder than they already are, don’t spoil the books of our shared library!

Some Words about Extra-curricular Activities«Университет предоставляет возможности как
в академической, так и неакадемической сфере. Эти возможности оплачены вашими деньгами, а заплатить деньги и не брать – это, по крайней мере, глупо. Только 20% студентов используют их на всю катушку и задают некую атмосферу среди студентов. Все остальные хотят быть похожими на них. Некоторые стесняются, некоторые говорят, что им это не надо, а в душе все равно завидуют. Просто некоторым лень, а некоторые об этом не думают.
Знания остаются неприменимы, пока ты не знаешь, как их применить. Все, что вы делаете для экстракура, можно экстраполировать на любую другую сферу реальной жизни. Вырасти в лидера, занимаясь только учебой, невозможно; нужно знать общество, контактировать с ним, показывать себя ему, даже управлять этим обществом. В клубах вы не просто получаете какие-то организационные навыки, вы получаете удовольствие, и незаметно для самих себя растете как личность.
На день благодарения мы награждаем выдающихся студентов и говорим спасибо за их работу. Наш офис и студенческий координатор обсуждают каждую кандидатуру. Нам не жалко сертификатов, но и не хочется выдавать их за легкое движение руки. Кто-то делает больше, кто-то меньше; у нас нет сертификатов разного цвета,
поэтому мы рассматриваем тех, кто показал себя на уровне университета, а не только департамента или внутри клуба».

Although extra-curriculum consumes a lot of time, I believe it is a worthwhile investment. Extracurricular activities are an import source of relaxation, refresh-ment, energizing and personal development at the same time.

I am taking part in all extra-curriculum activities. As less free time I have, as much successful I will be. If a person has a great desire to be involved in this initia-tive, he will cope with everything due to conscious time management.
I am inspired by my lovely and dear sister Adelia Kadyralieva. Despite the fact it’s her first year of study-ing, she has already participated in the Initiation cer-emony, helped out with Halloween, Thanksgiving Day and did other volunteering. She is doing all this stuff and also studies well (for example, she got an A+ for her long essay for the FYS course). I am really proud of her! Aidai Kadyralieva, ANTH-112
Extra-curricular activities are a really great oppor-tunity to forget about problems, relieve stress and just enjoy and relax. I do not have a high GPA but I still keep being engaged in what I like, and to me it is not an ob-stacle to participate. I really admire Yura Kim: he is not only a good person and a diligent student who has a 4.0 GPA but also a participant in ALL activities: there is nothing Yura could miss.

Professor Profile
Bermet Tursunkulova, the former Vice President for Academic Affairs, took the place of the Deputy Minister of Education to improve the quality of edu-cation system in the country.
Despite our efforts to get in touch with her, we couldn’t interview Bermet Tursunkulova because of her busy po-sition with new responsibilities. There-fore, President Andrew Wachtel was glad to make things clear.
Is Bermet Tursunkulova still working here at AUCA?
“Legally – no. She is not allowed to. Let’s just say her job has been split at the moment between me and Elida Nogoi-baeva. So I am taking strategic questions related to academic policy, and Elida is taking day-to-day questions related to that, and Bermet is officially not doing anything here.
Unofficially, she is available for com-ing. If we have questions about things that she was doing or knows about that we don’t know about, we are free to call her and ask her opinion. She is not tak-ing any decisions, she is not signing any documents, she is not currently officially in her position.
We’ve given her a sabbatical leave to go, solve the problems in the Ministry of Education with the expectation that she will return here. If she proves to be the most successful minister whoever lives and gets a huge amount done, I think she may have a great future becoming a president of Kyrgyzstan, then she won’t come back here.”
How can she help us working there?
“She didn’t take the job in order to help AUCA, she took the job in order to fix the problems of the higher education system. Many of the problems that the higher education system has, have an impact on us, so in so far as those prob-lems get fixed, it will improve things in AUCA, but that’s not the first and basic reason to take the job.
If the Ministry of Education func-tions well, we will have fewer problems with it. It might be as a result of her go-ing there; some things that the Ministry does that are totally stupid and make no sense and drive us crazy, will stop ex-isting. She is not going to sit there and sign decrees specifically for the benefit of AUCA. If she does, she is not going to last
very long. But as I said there are tons of things the Ministry does that are dumb, and this needs to be fixed. And she went there to fix them.”
What about the plan to make things better at AUCA?
“Do we have a special plan for how to reform higher education? Yes. Will you see it soon? I hope so. Will it be implemented? We’ll see, if it isn’t imple-mented, she is coming back here pretty quickly, I would say. So the goal is to put the program on the table as soon as pos-sible and force the government either to accept it or reject it. Because in my opin-ion, in this country getting things done by slow and steady steps is not going to work. Because the problem is complete-ly systemic and the only way to fix it is just by cleaning out the entire house and start from the beginning. If you start try to fix little things, you will eventually get grabbed in the mock and swamp and you will never get out”.
Who is doing her job right now?“I am doing part of her job and Elida
is doing part of her job. We are going to do her job for future, if it turns out we can’t do her job, then we’ll have to find
out some other ways of getting the job done. I think Elida Nogoibaeva has a lot of growth potential, and if she has the opportunity to do more things, she will do them well. We’ll see. The question is whether I and Elida have enough time to do what has to be done in addition to whatever we had to do before”.
In the end, President Wachtel pointed out again that it is not only about us, but about the whole country’s education, by saying the following, “I am sure if the reform plan goes through, it will be better for us. I am also sure it will be better for every other university in this country and that’s a lot more important than for us.”
Despite the fact that Bermet Tur-sunkulova is very busy right now and has many things to develop and im-plement for all students’ future, she promised to give us the interview soon enough. Until then, stay tuned.

“I came to Kyrgyzstan as a tour-ist”
St. Andrews has a great Central Asian and Middle Eastern program. Even though I was studying math, what is useful in the British system is that they want you to study quite a wide range of topics before your major. And I was in-terested in Central Asia. One of my good
friends from Bishkek and another good friend from America came and started to teach here at AUCA. I was thinking about visiting Kyrgyzstan. So I came as a tourist originally, and did all the tour-ist things. After spending a month here I decided to come back for a longer time. Almost the day I got in, a friend of mine at the university suggested a position for a math-teaching job at AUCA. And I al-ways wanted to go into academia. I could learn a language, I could live abroad, ev-ery day could be quite challenging, and it still is, I could teach, I could get ex-perience here. So I did it. I planned to be here for a semester. After six months they asked me to come back for another year. They asked if some new courses offered in math could redesigned, and I was involved in that project, too.
Kyrgyz TimeI like lots of things about Kyrgyzstan.
I would not stay here if I didn’t. I came from Britain, where we drink a lot of tea and I really like the fact that here nobody minds stopping for an hour to drink tea and just talk. There is amazing hospital-ity here. What I do not like is that people could be late for stuff a lot. Kyrgyz time. There was a really nice phrase which I heard here, “What time you come is up to you, but the time you leave is my choice.”
“A Russian Thing”My Russian level is intermediate,
probably. I can understand what people are talking about. I can have an hour-long conversation as long as it is about stuff I know. English and Russian are very different languages. My favorite phrase when students come to the office is “Don’t you know where somebody is?” And that is a Russian phrase, not Eng-lish. I think in Russian you say “Вы не знаете где кто-то?” but in English it sounds strange; you would say “Do you
know?”. When a student writes to me “Don’t you know when the exam would be?”, it sounds sarcastic, it’s like “You are the teacher, don’t you know?” And I always think oh, okay, that is just a Rus-sian thing.
“Marshrutkas are amazing”In the UK we hug anybody. If you see
a friend, it doesn’t matter who they are, you say hi and you hug. If it is a boss, you shake his hand. When I first came here, a really good friend of mine, a lo-cal guy, said “bye” to me, and I was go-ing to hug him but he said, “No, no, no, we just shake hands.” In marshrutkas that doesn’t apply: everybody is touch-ing each other. So marshrutkas are very strange places. But they are amazing, they stop anywhere you want.
About AUCA I really enjoy my job. I like the enthu-
siasm of students here. Maybe because the university is slightly different from other universities, but students here have a sort of particular drive, which is a very positive fact. And languages, you guys speak so many languages! I am amazed how people can speak German, Turkish, English, Kyrgyz and Russian. And I like particularly AUCA. I like the fact that it’s a liberal arts university. Students are able to use things that I am teaching in lots of different ways. I like the freedom of the university. I have complete freedom of what I want to teach, which is very useful. Small groups are really nice as well. Also, it seems to be like every week we have some sort of events happening. I don’t always partici-pate in these events, but Diversity Week is real fun. I don’t have lunch, I just eat this food at one of the Diversity days. That’s interesting about AUCA – when you watch the Diversity Week concerts, you see how many different nationali-ties and countries are represented in one university, which is cool. I also like the
NGA program, and you can notice that they are really ready for the next fresh-men year. I think there is no other uni-versity with such kind of program here.

Boxes
There have been a lot of editors during these 15 years as content, design, and style of the newspaper changed a lot, too. Even a popular Kyrgyz art-ist Nurbek Savitahunov and Journalism Professor Nargiza Ryskulova, both AUCA alumni, were editors of our newspaper. However, they all had the same way of processing things as we do. We have meetings in Room 104 or 208, or we discuss our content in our FB group. Actual-ly it is not as boring as it seems to be, we are always having fun discussions with jokes, voting, and exciting dialogues.
Students have awesome and silly ideas, however they all do not meet the deadline, so I fol-low them all day long saying, “Send me your work immedi-ately, or I will kill you slowly with a spoon.” I message them on Facebook, or I call during the night; they may hate me but they do their work. I do realize how hard it is to be a professor who has students who never meet deadlines. Anyway, we have less or more than one week to write an article. Sometimes
we have only one day or night to write something about a recent event. We start panicking!
After getting articles from reporters in the middle of the night, I send it to our copy edi-tor, Masha Panfilenko, who proofreads all our works so that we all look very smart and grammatically literate. No, we don’t sleep. Thanks to Masha, who still has not left us, as it is very hard to see all mistakes and check thousands of words on one night. She sends me all the articles back.
Next step is that I draw (it looks as it was made by a kid) a plan of how our issue is go-ing to look like and where to put certain articles. I give this plan, drawn on a piece of paper, to our designer Inna Piskareva, and in 2-3 days she gets our newspaper layout done. Then I check our issue again hoping it is the last time.
We send it to the printing center and in one night they print out 1,000 copies of the newspaper. In the morning of the next day, I go there by taxi to get those five heavy piles of the newspaper, sign the documents
and bring them all to AUCA. Rarely, taxi drivers help me to bring them all to Bravo, but ac-tually I usually do it alone, or sometimes with the help of our kind security guards. I still hope that one day students that are smoking outside the building will help me to carry those five heavy blocks of paper.
I open all packages and leave the newspaper in Bravo. Half of one block goes to Admissions Office, so that they can show what AUCA is about to school students. That is kind of a PR thing. My professor said that she has seen someone reading The New Star in Karakol. I take about 10 copies for our archive in Room 104. The rest is spread among students, professors and staff in one or maximum two days in Bravo and labs. Yes, the newspaper is FREE!
We have a video team, these guys rock! They spend hours on filming and editing for you to watch something fun and relax after your classes.
By the way, even though it is hard to work in a big team, I adore people here; more than 30 students are involved in our
activities, and they are awe-some. Just imagine, these guys write and keep a chronicle of AUCA student life.
Using the opportunity of Thanksgiving Day, I would like to thank all The New Star team members for being so amazing and for still being in the team.

Лишь некоторые более менее се-рьезны. Один высокий парень у них симпотичен даже настолько же на-сколько и джентельмен. Но в основ-ном все тупые и ведут себя как мырки.
Слушала их дебильные шутки, и пришла к мнению, что они как ни развивались со школу, так и остались. В общем, что я хотела этим сообщить. Будьте проще люди, и к вам потянут-ся.
-И чтобы там не говорили, наш университет всегда будет светским. Им всегда будут рулить представите-ли вышего общества. Всем простолю-динам и крестьянам стоит знать свое место. И засуньте поглубже ваш сель-ский патриотизм и манеры недобыд-ла. Здесь это не приветствуется.

Этот фарвелл посвящен двум самым неразлучным подругам в нашем университете: Оле и Лоле. Оля Шен – студентка факультета журналистики, очень позитивная шенщина. Лола Джумабаева – талантливая девушка с красивым голосом с факультета экономики.
Каждой из них было сказано, что фарэвелл пишется для другой, поэтому сами того не зная, они внесли свою лепту в написание этой статьи.
«Оля – это тот человек, который с того момента, как мы нашли общий язык, НИКОГДА больше не покидала меня! с самого начала я относилась к ней как к мега-супер-пупер-активному и интересному чуваку, с которым можно делать все, что только захочется! Конечно, наш первый и второй курс были просто улеееетными и безбашенными! Проходило время и мы очень сильно менялись... И в самые трудные моменты она всегда была рядом! Даааа, было время когда мы с ней часто ссорились, зато я точно знаю, что мы все говорили в лицо! И это то, что я в ней всегда ценила. Сейчас пошел всего лишь четвертый год нашей дружбы, но я уже точно знаю, что Оля стала не просто другом, а частью меня и моей жизни! Я очень благодарна АУЦА за то, что он помог нам встретиться, хоть мы и не очень нравились друг другу при нашем первом знакомстве, ахахаха! И когда мой мир рушится и все кажется
неимоверно сложным, Оля – это единственный человек, который всегда знает, что мне сказать и как все решить))) Поступая в АУЦА я и подумать не могла, что найду такого человека! Моя ОЛКА!!!», – делится Лола.
«О Лоле я могу рассказать много, но думаю, ей это не очень понравится. Так что по минимуму. Помню, как в начале нашего знакомства мы терпеть не могли друг друга. Особенно когда мы играли в «Мафию», каждую игру наши догадки были друг на друга. До сих пор я не понимаю, как так произошло, что мы с ней стали хорошо общаться. Именно с Лолкой мы на «одной волне», чувствуем друг друга, говорим одинаково, но при этом мы абсолютно разные люди.
С самого первого курса все этапы нашей жизни происходят почти в один и тот же промежуток времени. Сначала «Дебют»: без него я думаю, мы бы настолько не сблизились. Потом бессонные ночи, летающие булочки и конфеты, «Вот! Вот! Вот!», «События развивались стремительно…», как мы лажались на сцене и забывали слова, и «Белые обои», как ждали друг друга из поездок, как мы вместе плели фенечки и отчаянно рыдали в машине, психовали на всех и на самих себя. Как мы зажевали пачку жвачки и во рту была нереальная свежесть, и «Рафаэлло», от которого потом тошнило, и как мы быстро начинали что-нибудь делать, а потом так же стремительно это бросали, и наш веселый второй курс и многое другое, о чем ты, Лолка, знаю, помнишь.
Многие говорили нам, что мы точно дружим с самого детства, но нет, это все любимый АУЦА, он соединил нас вместе. Мы всегда поддерживаем и переживаем друг за друга, а после поддержки, чтобы не расслабляться, говорим: «Успокойся, тряпка! Возьми себя в руки! Не ной!» Потому что точно знаем, что все у нас получится.
Лоле я доверяю как самой себе и точно знаю, что не зря, и это взаимно. Помню, как мы говорили, что нам без разницы, что будет через какой-то промежуток времени, ведь что бы ни произошло, и какое бы расстояние нас ни разделяло, мы всегда были, есть и будем самыми лучшими, любимыми и единственными подругами друг для друга, а души наши реинкарнируют
и найдут друг друга в следующих жизнях. У нас не женская дружба, а крепкая мужская, бро», – делится Лолга Шен.
«Оля – это позитив и старание сделать все идеально: никогда не видел, чтоб она бросила работу на половине пройденного пути. В нужные моменты она может быть невероятно милой и забавной, а
иногда может поставить всех на место и ведь потом ее будут слушать)) Я очень рад, что в тот день, на репетиции к конкурсу «Стрим», она была в CH-1 и согласилась играть на сцене со мной. Несмотря на все проблемы с учебой, она всегда находит время для наших встреч. Оля умеет развеселить, когда всем грустно) Надеюсь, что этот человек будет со мной до конца нашей совместной жизни», – Дима Дё.
«Что буду помнить всегда – это количество смеха, который всегда сопровождал этот тандем. Лоля – это как несущийся на вас снежный ком позитивной энергетики! И ведь столько воспоминаний связано с вами обеими! Я уже не хочу говорить о таких глобальных вещах, как поездка в Каракол, турне после первого курса, ваше выступление на «Стриме» (Оля, сигарету на сцене все же можно было и зажечь :D). Мне хочется вспомнить парочку небольших деталей:
Оля, помнишь, как ты терпеть не могла ни меня, ни Лолу? Дружить ведь вы начали именно с этого периода.
Лола, помнишь, как ты учила меня играть на гитаре Cancion Del Ma-riachi, когда мы решили сыграть это, поздравляя с днем рождения Турика?
Оля, помнишь, когда мы готовились к Diversity и долго ждали такси где-то на Алматинке? Понаделали веселых фоток, здорово поговорили и трещали над придурком-таксистом, который всю дорогу слушал какую-то тупую песню «гут гут зер гут гут гут зер гут».
Лола, выпуклая и впуклая функция! Вообще, отлично мы тогда с тобой «учились» на Game Theory, и Урмамбетов над нами, наверное, тоже порядочно наржался.
Таких мелочей можно навспоминать огромное количество. Как ни крути, но вы всегда были где-то рядом, и я очень, очень сильно вас люблю», – Юрий Ким

А еще вы мега-нереально-крутые! Сколько всего мы с вами пережили будучи фрэшами. Много разных историй было на гастролях по Кыргызстану: как пели в маршрутке, как кушали карабалтинские самсы! Быть с вами в театре «Дебют» было на самом деле большой удачей, этим можно гордиться и всегда помнить, как о самых классных моментах студенческой жизни! Вы Самые артистичные и талантливые!
