Marathon journey to raise funds for St John
Fundraiser . . . Members of theCanterburybranchof theWidowsSonsMotorcycleClubpushing a hospital bed alongPaRoad, nearTuahiwi last Saturdayduring theirmarathonjourney to raise funds for St John.

Competing in a marathon is a toughslog. However, a group of benevolent
motorcyclists made the 42km slog eventougher by pushing a hospital bed thedistance in the hope of raising$100,000 for St John Ambulance to buyfour new automated externaldefibrillators (AEDs) defibrillatorsfor their ambulances. An AED is a portable lifesaving
device which delivers an electricalshock to a patient after a heartattackto restore the heart’s natural rhythm. It can also be used to transfer vital
patient information from theambulance to the hospital. This means that cardiologists can
assist during the journey to thehospital and are better informed whenthe patient arrives. AEDs are also
relatively simple to use.The Canterbury branch of the
Widows Sons Motorcycle Club, whichbelongs to the Freemasons motorcycleassociation, asked businesses andindividuals to sponsor the team ofvolunteers pushing the bed, and theyalso collected money along the route.Their gruelling journey began in
Rangiora, at the St John AmbulanceStation in Albert Street, and passedthrough Tuahiwi, Woodend andKaiapoi before finishing at theChristchurch Hospital, in RiccartonAvenue.SamRowntree, president of the
Canterbury club, said onMonday thatthey did not know yet what the finaltotal raised was.‘‘It is safe to say it is over $80,000,’’
he said.‘‘We are hoping it is closer to
$100,000.’’
Warwick Kirwan, chairman of theRangiora St John Ambulance, said$80,000 was ‘‘absolutely fantastic, anoutstanding amount.’’A lot of work had gone into
organising the event andmany peoplehad supported it, he said. It took anawful lot of sausages to raise thatamount, and St John Ambulance wasextremely grateful to everyoneinvolved in the fundraiser.‘‘We can now concentrate on saving
lives instead of selling sausages toraise funds,’’ he said. The fundraiser was held in
conjunction with the 75th birthday ofthe St John Rangiora Youth Division.TheWidows Sons Motorcycle Club
has also raised $41,000 for othercharities this year including $24,000for theWestpac Rescue Helicopter,$6000 for White Ribbon, $1000 forCancer Research and $10,000 for RSA.

STUART SMITH MP FOR KAIKOURASTUARTAround the electorate with
Looking foward toanother year as MPJust over a year ago, on election night, Itogetherwithmy family and a dedicatedsupport team gathered to await theresults after a very busy campaign.I was truly humbled to be elected as
yourMember of Parliament with arecordmajority.Soon after, I stood in parliament
deliveringmymaiden speech, feelinghonoured and privileged to be doing so.In that speech, I said I would never
takemy election for granted, and thisstatement is something I have, andwillcontinue to stand by.Over the past 12months I have strived
towork hard for this electorate.Just getting around the electorate is no
small feat. TheKaikouraElectorate isthe fourth largest general seat, covering21,000 square kilometres in oftenchallenging terrain, from boat accessonly D’Urville Island right down to themost ruralmetal roads ofNorthCanterbury.Within this area are urban centres,
rural farming towns, high countrystations and remote coastal settlements.Every kilometre I have travelled has
beenworth it.I have often been heartened to see
strong, united communities wherehardworking locals often in volunteerroles make things happen.I have also been lucky enough to be
invited to attend, or speak at, manywonderful community occasions, fromopening a vet clinic in Culverden to an
awards night at the Amberley FireBrigade gold star award to the openingofWairauHospital’s newMRImachine. There have been a number highlights
during the year, a particular highlightformewas hosting the PrimeMinister intheElectorate. There have also been challenges, most
notably the drought which affected ahuge chunk of this electorate and looksset to do so again this summer.I was proud to see how our farmers
and growers cope in these adverseconditions andwill continue to offerthemmy support. It has beenmy pleasure to represent
the agriculture industry’s best interestswithin this government as deputyChairof the Primary Production SelectCommittee, amember of theAgricultural Caucus Committee and theRural Broadband Initiativeworkinggroup.I am also on the Social Services Select
Committee, theRegional DevelopmentCaucus Committee, the EducationCaucus Committee and theBluegreens(National’s advisory group onenvironmental issues).I am lucky enough to be supported by
both very experienced and new staff, whose combined expertise and skillshave been instrumental to a successfulfirst year. Here’s to another great year for the
Kaikoura electorate. I amproud andhonoured to represent you.
Opportunity to standfor challenging roleSix years on from the signing of theCanterburyWaterManagementStrategy (CWMS) by all Canterburycouncils, and five plus years since theformation of theHurunui/WaiauZoneCommittee, the first of ten acrossCanterbury to be formed, the annualprocess to refresh themembership ofthose committees is imminent. With two positions becoming vacant
annually by rotation, I wouldencourage anyonewith a stronginterest inwatermanagement to checkit out and seriously consider offeringyourself as a candidate for thischallenging role.A good starting pointwould be to
read theCanterburyWaterManagement Strategy (CWMS), theZone ImplementationProgramme(ZIP), and theHurunuiWaiauRegional Plan (HWRP).Thiswill give you a clear picture of
the principles and targets in thestrategy, and the vision and intent ofthe ZIP and anunderstanding of theHWRP.It is important to understand that the
CWMSandZIP are predominantlydirectional, visionary, and aspirationalstatements, developed by thecommunity after extensive Canterburywide consultation in the case of theCWMSand extensive community ofinterest consultation in the case of the
ZIP.TheHWRPwas influenced by these
documents but it is still finally theproduct of theResourceManagementAct (RMA) processes and theNationalPolicy for FreshWater. The resulting Plan, in this case the
HWRP is theRMA’s interpretation anddetermination of how the intendedoutcome of thoseCommunity viewsand aspirationswill be delivered. This process is notwithout its faults
andplans do not necessarily delivereverything for everyone. An example: It’s widely
acknowledged that theHWRPhasseveral unintended consequences, unfairly affecting somepeople.Acknowledging that, the regional
council has taken a pragmaticapproach to enforcing the plan, allowing the focus instead to be onfinding solutions.A change to thePlan is required to
address these issues and thecommunity has an opportunity over thenext two to three years to influencechanges in the newplan through theReviewProcess that is scheduled for2018.The ZIPwill also be reviewed to
ensure it still reflects our community’sviews. This is your opportunity to getinvolved in these processes, andinfluence these important issues.

Submissions on the District Plan may affect your propertyAnd it can happen without you being told anything about it…
The Mayor of Hurunui District, Winton Dalley, explains why it is important for landowners to review the summary document:
While council has consulted widely and over a long period of time with the community, we openly acknowledge that forsome people, and for whatever reason, the District Plan process may have slipped under their radar. In acknowledgingthat, I strongly suggest that you now take the opportunity to check out the submissions to the Plan to ensure that you arefully aware of any implications relating to those submissions for you and your property. I know that our staff will be happy toassist you to navigate the documents and offer any advice you may need.
We encourage you to review the summary document and submissions to checkwhether your property is affected by a submission.
The Hurunui District Council is required to review its District Plan every ten years under the Resource Management Act.The current plan dates to 2003, and a review of the plan started in 2011. Over the last four years the council has beenresearching, holding workshops and consulting communities. The result is the Proposed Hurunui District Plan which waspublicly notified in May 2015. During the submission period (May to July 2015) over 100 submissions were received.
A Summary of the Decisions Requested through the submission process is now available, and council will be receivingfurther submissions on this summary from 17 September until 9 October, 2015. You can make further submissions if youare:• a person representing a relevant aspect of the public interest; or• a person that has in interest in the proposed plan greater than the interest that the general public has.
Further submissions must be confined to either support or opposition and cannot introduce new matters.
Please note that a submission may have requested a change to theProposed District Plan as it was notified.
It is up to you to check if any submissions may directly affect your property
Our policy planners are available to help with explaining how to navigate the summary document andsubmissions.
Copies of the Summary of Decisions Requested and original submissions are available for public inspection at the fol-lowing locations:• Council’s website: www.hurunui.govt.nz• Hurunui District Council offices, 66 Carters Road, Amberley• Your local library or service centre

Flea ControlFleas are the most common externalparasite of cats and dogs and their controlis becoming a challenge for veterinariansand pet owners. The flea has evolvedover a long period of time and isextremely resistant in the environment, therefore to have an effective flea controlprogramme an understanding of the flealife cycle is essential. The flea life cycle begins with eggslaid on the pets’ hair coat, which fall offthe host and into the animals bedding, carpet and environment. Larvae hatchfrom these eggs and develop, feedingon adult flea faeces (digested blood).Larvae grow and eventually spin cocoonsgoing into another development stagecalled pupation, often hidden within thecarpet fibres. Pupae can lie dormant formany months and are stimulated to hatchinto adults by vibrations and warmingtemperatures. Emerging adult fleas arefairly mobile and can survive a few dayswithout a host in a suitable environment.Once a suitable host is found, feedingbegins, taking a blood meal, withinhours of landing on your cat or dog. Theaverage time from egg to adult is aboutthree weeks, however the life cycle canbe shortened significantly when suitableclimatic conditions occur. It is importantto realise that fleas suck blood and asignificant flea burden can cause lifethreatening blood loss especially in youngand geriatric animals.
Every day, veterinarians hear “My petdoesn’t have fleas”, and it isn’t untilanimals have a significant flea burden, are they easy to detect. Smaller burdensare even more difficult to see, as petsare quite adapt at grooming them away, and sometimes all you will see is thecharacteristic skin disease or flea dirt.Indoor pets are just as susceptible tofleas as outside pets, with the regulatedtemperature of the home, perfect forflea survival, with fleas developingbetween the cracks of wooden floorsand in carpets. The fleas that live onyour pet represent 5% of the total fleapopulation, with the other 95% living inthe environment, in various stages ofdevelopment. There are several different flea controlpreparations on the market such aswashes, spot-ons, tablets and sprays.Generally the choice of flea controlis based on ease of use and cost. Itis important to realise that there isemerging evidence that not all flea controlproducts are as effective as they usedto be. Being ahead of the pending fleachallenge is the key to an effective fleacontrol programme, along with usingthe appropriate product, suitable to yoursituation. Discussing your requirementsat your nearest North Canterbury VetsClinic, will ensure that your pet is notsubjected to a flea problem as theweather warms up.
New products on the market this seasonare Bravecto, Nexguard, NexguardSpectra and Activyl. They all containnewly developed active ingredients, therefore flea resistance problems arenot an issue. These new products areextremely effective and fast acting, whilstbeing safe to use on your pet.Nexguard and Nexguard Spectra area highly palatable chewable tablet thatprovide excellent flea control for onemonth, and most dogs will take thesetablets readily. Nexguard Spectra alsoaddresses intestinal parasites at the sametime as treating for fleas.Bravecto is effective for three monthsagainst fleas in dogs and is also a verypalatable chewable tablet. If rememberingto use flea control products is an issue, then the longer activity of this product canprevent significant flea burdens occurringover the warmer months. Bravecto isan excellent choice for our working dogpopulationActivyl is a spot-on treatment forboth cats and dogs, requiring monthlyapplication and can be used from 8 weeksof age. We have identified certain regionswithin our district where Activyl is the onlyeffective product for flea control in cats, therefore we are recommending its use incertain areas.

Hurunui’s bale wrap pioneer remembersBy AMANDABOWES
Pioneer . . . Marty Hoban is a pioneer ofbaleage in the Hurunui district.
PHOTO: AMANDA BOWES
While the sight of baleage is commonaround the district, it is a relative newcomer to the agricultural industry.Despite the first silage beingmade in
1874 by an American dairy farmer, thewidespread use of wrapped silage, orbaleage only began in the early 1990s.Marty Hoban and Brian Ginders, from
Masons Flat andMedbury, were thepioneers of making baleage in theHurunui district and began becausethey wanted a better quality feed fortheir own livestock.Brian says he was interested in
making baleage because he was sick ofthe NorWest blowing his hay away. Inthose days, he was running a traditionalsheep and beef dryland farm. (He hassince converted to dairy and isirrigated.)In 1992, the two beganmaking
baleage, at first for themselves, thenother farmers. At the peak of the season, they would cover large distances, as faraway as Tai Tapu near Christchurch to
GlennWye in the north. It wasn’t the fastest process at the
beginning. A baler was bought thatcould handle wet forage and to startwith only pastures weremade intobaleage.Bales were round and roll baled a
process in which 25 bales an hour werewrapped. Marty took care of thewrapping, and their first wrapper was aDLMwith a side arm that only wrappedround bales.Within a couple of years they bought
their first tube wrapper, as it only didsmaller bales, they had it modified andput on a double hoop.Since then they have had four or five
different wrappers with the later onesable to do both round and square bales. With the advent of tube wrapping,
different forages were able to be baled.Themore stalky types of feed, like
lucerne were no longer a problem.Brian says they learnt as they went.
Sometimes bales that looked perfectlygood would turn out to be bad inside, when this was the case it was usuallydue tomouse damage.Crops like triticale or oats are
favourites of mice, which go for theseed. They can cause incredibledamage by burrowing underneath andeating from the bottom up.Now that Brian’s farm is converted to
dairy, he says he is going away frombaleage and concentrating on silage. Hehas invested in loader wagons for silageand says it is easier and quicker to storeand feed out.He is doing some silage for other
farmers in the area as the new gear hasto make enough tomake it pay, butgradually the contracting side iswinding down.‘‘There are somany peoplemaking
baleage now there isn’t the need thatthere once was, we still do some squarebales or a few people but generally wearemainly doing silage now.’’

The old-fashioned wayHorse power . . . Paul Power with two of his Clydesdales, Jess and Lana, at Tuahiwi lastweekend. PHOTO: SHELLEY TOPP
By SHELLEY TOPP
Back in the day, before tractors wereinvented, Clydesdale horses didmost ofthework on farmsmachines do today.Nowadays, the horses are rarely seen
working on farms, and are keptmainly bybreeders and hobbyists for show andcompetition ploughingwork.Paul Power, of Kaiapoi, has owned and
bred Clydesdales for 40 years. He and his teamof beautiful equine
giants are always a popular attractionaround the shows and at competitionploughing events. However, Power has also used his
Clydesdales for farmwork, includingcutting hay, but will not be using them forthe job this year.
‘‘I used them for a number of yearsfrom 1978 to about 1993,’’ he said.He has also cut hay at times using
friends’ horses.‘‘It is very enjoyable cutting haywith
horses, if everything is going right, but itall takes a lot longer comparedwith atractor,’’ he said.Power has also used the horses to rake
hay, but the baling has always been donewith a tractor and baler and has put themtowork to cart hay, with awagon, and stilldoes sometimes, but nowhemostly usesa sledge.Although he still has all the equipment
necessary to cut and rake the haywith hishorses, these days he prefers to leave thewhole job up to a contractor usingmodernmachinery.
Getting feed balance rightManaging feed through spring is crucialtomaximising farmprofit.Spring feedmanagement is about
achieving a balance between feedingstock, whichmay include hay, baleageand silage, andmaximising high qualitypasture for future rotations, DairyNZscientists SeanMcCarthy, JaneKay andDavid Chapman explain in a paperpresented at the South IslandDairyEvent held at LincolnUniversity in June.‘‘Pasture eaten per hectare and farm
working expenses, of which feed costscontribute about 23 percent, have a largeimpact on the financial performance of afarm business.‘‘The challenge during this period is to
match feed supply and herd demand andto set up the farm for the next rotations. However this period is very volatile, withlarge ranges in climatic conditions andsubsequent pasture growth.‘‘Following the end of the first rotation,
challenges continue to arisewith pasturesurpluses and deficits occurring.’’The scientists say during the first
rotation there is often a gap betweenpasture growth and herd demand.‘‘During this period it is important to
stay on a long rotation length to ensurethe inclusion of pasture in the diet of themilking cow every day and to ensure alarge quantity of high quality pasture isavailable for the second rotation.’’The spring rotation planner (SRP) is a
tool, provided byDairyNZ, which is usedbymany farmers tomanage rotations and‘‘is based on grazing a set proportion ofthe farm each day during this period’’.‘‘As you near the end of the first round
and approach balance date (wheresupply equals demand), it is of increasedimportance tomonitor pasture supply
and growth rates.‘‘This will enable you to recognise
when the rotation can be sped up,allowing formore pasture to be includedin the diet and easiermanagement of theimpending pasture surplus.’’From the ‘‘balance date’’, the scientists
say the challenge is tomanage ‘‘a volatilepasturewhile optimising animalperformance’’.‘‘This requires preempting feed
deficits andmanaging thesewithnitrogen fertiliser and / or gibberellicacid application and / or inclusion ofsupplements.’’Supplementsmay include hay, baleage
and silage.The feedmanagement process involves
establishing a plan, refining the plan andmanaging ‘‘the feed event’’, whichincludes decisions around pasture andsupplement allocation, management ofthe herdwhile in the paddocks and‘‘using cow and pasture indicators todetermine if cows are adequately fed’’.Identifying ‘‘true surpluses’’ in a timely
manner allows for quality baleage to bemade, which can be fed to cows during afeed deficit.Weekly farmwalks and using ‘‘a feed
wedge’’ are other tools formonitoringpasture growth.‘‘Feedmanagement decisionsmade in
springwill have amajor impact onpasture, animal and financialperformance.‘‘Planning is important and the
execution of these plans is crucial.‘‘There are a number of key tools
available to use but each tool needsunderstanding so that when theinevitable challenges occur the rightdecisions aremade and actions taken.’’

Barns an option to ensure stock well fed
Barn feed . . . DairyNZ says it is unclearwhether barns provide any real benefits tofeeding livestock. FILE PHOTO
Asdairy farmsgrowandbecomemoreintensive, building abarn is becominganoption tobettermanage, house cowsandensure theyarewellfedwithhay, silageandbaleageandother supplements andwinter feedcrops.DairyNZsenior economistMatthew
Newmanand seniordeveloperKimMashlanpresentedapaper to theSouthIslandDairyEvent atLincolnUniversity inJune, discussing the implications ofbuilding and runningabarn system, includingprofitability, hiddencosts, benefits andnutrient loss. The reportwasbasedon information
gatheredbyDairyNZ,whichhasalso led todecision support tools to assist farmers inconsideringwhether off paddockinfrastructure, includingbarns, is right forthem.‘‘Themain reasons farmers invest in
barns is formanagementpurposes, suchaspreventionof pasturepuggingorovergrazing, improving conditions for cowsand staff, and reducing the relianceonwinter grazing contracts, not necessarilyfor financial or environmental reasons,’’the report says.‘‘In general, farmswithbarnsare trading
someof the climatic risks for financialrisks.’’Buildingabarn tends tomeanachange
to the farmsystem, withmore feed likely tobe importedandmoredetailedmanagement required, ‘‘particularlyaroundnutritionand stockmanagement’’.‘‘Many farmers reported taking two to
three years to adjust the system toa levelthey feltwasappropriate.’’
Thebenefits listedby farmers forbuildingabarnwere ‘‘predominantly farmmanagement orientatedandnotdue tofinancial reasons’’, with few listing theenvironment as a reason.Reasons for consideringbarns included
frustrationwithmanagingwet soils andpuggingdamage, reduced foodwaste, making the farmsystemsimpler, makingthe farmmore resilient, more control overanimalwelfare andbetter cowcondition, less fertiliser requiredandpeaceofmind.Barnsalsoprovidedmoreoptions
includingwintermilking, extendinglactationandexpansionwithout buyingmore land.Several of the farmswithbarns
interviewedbyDairyNZreportedanincrease inmilk solidsproduction, due toincreased feeding levels anda longerlactationperiod.Farmswhichhadpreviously grazedcowsoff farmover thewinter also reported savings inwinteringcowsonfarm in thebarn. The report says it is difficult to quantify
thebenefit to theenvironment of buildingabarn, whenusingOverseer tomeasure theimpact onnutrient losses.‘‘The farmswerenot aiming to reduce
nitrogen leachingand theanalysiswassimply to compareprebarn leaching levelswith those resultingpostbarn, includingchanges to the system.Someof the casestudy farmshadpreviously grazedcowsoffthe farmoverwinter.’’‘‘Theanalysiswason themilking
platformonly. This caused some issues onsome farmsas they tended to incorporategrazingon the runoff from time to time, dependingoncircumstances, or transfersof feedandeffluent, whichwasdifficult toincorporate intoOverseer.‘‘Overseer is notwell set up tohandle
winteringbarns and someanomalies arose.Itwouldappear that nitrogen leaching inOverseer is largelydrivenby rainfall andsoil type, andas such it doesn’t readilycapture thebenefit of thebarn.’’Nitrogen losses are influencedby
effluentmanagement, croppingandwintermanagement, so improvementsmaynot bedue to thebarn.
Feeding animals right food at right timeADairyNZ programme is helpingfarmers feed their animals the right foodat the right time.TheFeedRight initiative, which is
running from 2014 to 2017, is providingfarmerswith ‘‘knowledge and resourcesthat enable them tomake profitable andsustainable feedmanagement decisionsin pasturebased dairy systems’’.DairyNZ scientists JaneKay and John
Roche teamed upwith LincolnUniversity scientist JimGibbs andCanterbury consultant TerryHughes toanswer questions asked by farmers atFeedRight events, in a paper presentedat the South IslandDairy Event atLincolnUniversity in June.Cows consuming a high intake of
quality pasture consumemorewaterthan cows eating a ‘‘totalmixed ration’’,whichmay include hay, baleage andsilage, they say.
‘‘A cow eating 18kg of drymatter a dayof a high quality pasture can consumeabout 100 to 120 litres of water a day.‘‘In a pasturebased diet, loose faeces
is typically associatedwith the highwater content of the pasture and does notindicate health issues. The loose faecesare simply a consequence of the highwater intake, rapid passage rate and fastrumen turnover.’’Cows on a pasture diet also have a
different rumen size and content to cowson a totalmixed ration, the scientists say.‘‘Rumens frompasturefed cows tend
to be larger than from cows fed a totalmixed ration around 2025 percent ofliveweight for cows grazing pasturecomparedwith 10% of liveweight forcows fed a totalmixed ration.‘‘In the rumens of cows fed a total
mixed ration there are three distinctlayers. However, these do not exist in the
rumens of pasturefed cows. In therumen of a pasturefed cow, there is nofloating layer (no rumenmat) andeverything ismixed together like lawnclippings.’’Cows do not need hay or straw during
spring in a pasturebased died as ‘‘thereis adequate fibre in spring pasture forthe rumen to function properly’’, thescientists say.‘‘Themyth that ‘soft’ pasture or the
appearance of loose dung indicates arumen upset or acidosis is associatedwith totalmixed ration or highinputsystems and does not relate to cowseating a diet of at least 60% grazed grass.‘‘The drymatter percentage of the
pasture is lower during spring, whichmeans extrawater passes through therumen.‘‘This water is not absorbed in the third
stomach and results in loose dung.’’

Thewinners of the fencingand clay target shootingwillnow compete in theNewZealandYoungFarmers(NZYF) national competitionsgrand final being held inconjunctionwithwith the 2016YoungFarmerContest grandfinalwhichwill be held inTimaru during July 79.
NZYFchief executive TerryCopeland says the decision toselect Timaru as the venuecame after a lengthy applicationand assessment process by thecontestmanagementcommittee. The annual contest alternates
between theNorth Island andSouth Island each year, with the
2015 grand final being held inTaupo last July. It was held atLincoln in 2013.‘‘It was a tough decision
between the two contenders forthe 2016 venue,’’ Mr Copelandsays.‘‘Howeverwehave a robust
assessment of the applicationsand in the end only one venue
can be successful. In this case,Timaru ticked all the boxes interms of staging of the event, venues, facilities and capabilityof volunteers.‘‘There’s a number of key
criteria looked at inmaking thedecision. We feel very confidentthat Timaruwill do a great jobhosting the event.’’

Tight times . . . A lowmilk price has prompted the Lincoln University Dairy Farm to‘‘rejig the system’’. FILE PHOTO
Adapting to tight times is the focusof afielddayatLincolnnextweek.‘‘Rejigging the system tomaintain
viability’’ is the focusof theLincolnUniversityDairyFarm’s spring focusdayonThursday,October 8.Farmmanagementwill discuss the
options ofwintering stockon farm, keeping young stockat homeandotheroptions tohelp reduce costswhile themilkprice is low.Pasturemanagement andharvesting
morepasturewill alsobediscussed, while thenew ‘‘SustainableDairying WorkplaceActionPlan’’will be launchedon theday.Last season, theLincoln farmmanaged
toproducemoremilk than thepreviousseason, despite the lowmilkpriceanddry conditions.Figures releasedatDairyNZ tactics for
tight timesworkshopsduring Juneand
July showed the farmproduced278,654kgofmilk solids in the2014/2015season, compared to 276,019kgMS theprevious season, but thiswasdownonthe2013/2014 seasonwhen300,484kgMSwasproduced.The slightly improvedproduction
result, whichwasaoneper centincrease, came in spite of the farmmilking 11percent fewer cows, 43% lessnitrogen fertiliser beingapplied, feedingout 48% less imported silageandregrassing 15%of the farm (threepaddocks).TheLincolnUniversityDairyFarm’s
spring focusdaywill beheldonThursday,October 8, from10am to1pmat the farmon the corner of ShandsandEllesmere JunctionRoads.Morning teawill beavailable onarrival, and the focusdaywill concludewitha light lunch.Anoptional farmwalk is also available.
Although the Chatham Islands lie 860kmseast of Christchurch they are stillconsidered part of Beef +LambNewZealand’s northern South Island region. As the region’s representative, I was
fortunate to visit the Islands (ChathamandPitt) earlier thismonth andwasstruck by both the potential to increasesheep and beef production and theunusual challenges these farmers face.Being so far away from themainland
they are hit with high freight costs for alltheir imports and exports. While farmershave the ability to finish lambs, stock canlose condition and value by the time theyreach the processors atNapier. It is typically a three day boat trip to
Napier, but lambs also need to be yardedfor a period before they are transported.Interestingly farmers on the Chathams
prefer to send finished stock toNapierbecause of the differential in theNorthIsland and South Islandmeat schedules, whilemost store stock is sent to Timaru.Fencingwire needs to be replaced
around every seven years due to rust andaccessing skilled labour, such asshearers and fencers, can be difficult.Terrain over both islands varies from
flat to easy hill country and annualrainfall averages 8501000mm, butregenerating gorse and fern are aproblem, as arewild cattle and pigs.In the pastmany farmers on the
Chatham Islands had fishing and fishingquota as source of income, but this ischangingwithmore farmers nowmakingtheir living entirely off the land.Typically grass grows all year round,
but like this region, the Chatham Islandsexperienced a very dry summer and anunusually coldwinterwith snow fallingfor first time in 50 years. So going intolambing, pasture covers wereparticularly low.Facedwith a number of external
factors overwhich they have no control, such as shipping costs and the distance toprocessing, the farmerswe spoke to arelooking to increase production behindthe farmgate and are hungry forinformation about how best to do this.Areas of particular interest are
growingwinter feed crops such asswedes and kale for ewes and finishingcrops for lambs.Winter cropswouldallow farmers to build pasture covers forlambing and help improve lambsurvivability and preweaning growthrates. We visited one farmerwho has had
great success growing outstanding swedeand kale crops and showedwhat waspossible.Farmers on the Chatham Islands
expressed a real willingness toworktogether and as an organisation, Beef +LambNewZealand is keen to supportthemby setting up an extensionprogramme and helping them inwhateverwaywe can.For farmers on themainland the
spring has brought little respite to tightfeed conditions andwe are all looking forsomewarmth and sunshine. It’simportant we keep supporting each otherso don’t hesitate to contactme on0272227927.

Players’ double-bill delivers many laughsThe smiles on their faces said it all.As the audience filed out of the
Rangiora Players’ Little Theatre, inNorthbrookRoadRangiora, after lastFriday night’s penultimate performanceof the comedy doublebill Snip, andBonking JamesBond, it was cleareveryone had had a really good laugh. Both of the plays werewritten byNew
Zealander April Phillips, directed byGrant Edgar, and both featuredcharacters facing unwelcome, lifechanging decisions. In Snip, Jenny, played by Claire
Buckley, hasmade a booking for hermeekmannered husbandFrank, playedby Peter Edwards, to have a vasectomy.
The terrifying thought of getting the snipgives Frank nightmareswhich includevisits from theGodfather, DonCorleone, played byKevin Jones. The ‘‘Don’’ is quickwith advice for
Frank on howhemust take control of thesituation and tell Jenny hewill not havea vasectomy. ‘‘Thewoman shemakes thespaghetti, theman, hemakes themeatballs,’’ he says. However, the ‘‘Don’’ soon recognises
Jenny is an immovable force on thevasectomy issue, andwonders if shemayevenmake aworthy ‘‘hitman’’ recruit. In Bonking JamesBond,Waimakariri
District councillor, KirstynBarnett playsBetty Robertson, who is distraught after
discovering her ‘‘lazy’’ husband Jeffrey ishaving an affair with Penelope, a young, blonde temptress. She begins to fantasise about how she
will punish Penelope for pinching herman, and Jeffrey for his infidelity. Finally she decides to create an allusionthat she too is having an affair, and in herfantasy her newfound lover is noneother than 007 himself, JamesBond, played byRupertWard. Both plays hadmanymoments of great
fun, with strong performances from allseven castmembers, and lots of laughsfrom the audience. However theproductionwas dogged by a series ofseriousmishaps.
After auditions, Buckley, broke a bonein her foot and completed earlyrehearsals on crutches.Anita van der Velden, who played Sam
in Snip, injured a calfmuscle and limpedthrough rehearsals. Jones, was alsolimping during rehearsals after anaccidental encounter with coral inRarotonga left himwith poisoned feet, andHollyNeale, cast as Penelope inBonking JamesBond, had towithdrawfrom the show after injuring her foot sobadly she had to have surgery to repairthe tendons. Luckily thoughVan derVeldenwas able to step in and playedboth roles of Sam in Snip andPenelopeinBonking JamesBondwith style.

New Listing | State Highway 1, Kaikoura1,783 Hectares
Rakanui And Kahutara.
Calling all hunters, high country lovers and eco tourists!
This substantial block of traditional New Zealand tussock country is offered for genuine sale by our overseas vendors. One of the last of its kind, this diverse holding islocated on the Kaikoura coastline and is characterised by flat valley floors rising to 670 metres above sea level.
From the Inland Kaikoura Range to the Peninsula and round to South Bay, home to the world famous whales and whale watch business, the block has ecological appeal, adjoins State Highway 1 at South Bay and the Kahutara River on its northern boundary.
A keen eye will spot potential here. With wildlife and tourism on offer in the Kaikoura area, Manuka and native trees in abundance on the property, we see the propertylinked to eco-tourism, honey, or as an escape from the city hustle.
Currently leased, traditional practices see the property running a small number of breeding cows utilising good tracks, natural water supplies, two sets of cattle yards, awoolshed and adjoining implement shed, two older homes, plus a hunter’s hut.
With a little TLC, stocking rates could be increased and incorporated into a mix of income streams. A special property with potential and diversity. | Property ID BL1151

Bryony’s love of the stage inspires othersBy SHELLEY TOPP
Local talent . . . Talented Rangiora singer and actress Bryony Jamisonis the assistant director for the Dale Hartley School of Speech andDrama’s production of TheWizard of Oz, being performed at theRangiora TownHall this week. PHOTO: SUPPLIED.
It was a busy count down toTheWizard of Oz opening dayfor the cast and productioncrew. The Dale Hartley School of
Speech and Drama’sproduction opened at theRangiora TownHallyesterday with a 2pmmatineeperformance.Assistant director Bryony
Jamison says the schoolusually produces two shows ayear: one for the senior schooland one for the juniors.‘‘But, since we’re back in the
Rangiora TownHall, we’remaking the most of thewonderful venue and puttingon a whole schoolextravaganza,’’ she says.‘‘You will get to see some
tiny tots making their firstappearances, and a lot of veryexperienced performers whohave worked very hard tobring this show to life (theyrange from 5 to 18 years).’’Ms Jamison, a talented
young actress and singer fromRangiora, has been involvedwith the school sincechildhood, beginning withsinging lessons aged 8, thendrama lessons aged 13.‘‘My passion for the arts
grew far beyond just a hobby, and in my final year of high
school I gainedmy ATCL(Associate Trinity College,London) certificate.‘‘I have been teaching
singing and drama at theschool for three years, andhave had the opportunity tovocal coach, direct, and
assistant direct a fewmajorproductions as well aslearning about the technicalside of theatre,’’ she says. This year has been a busy
one for Ms Jamison.‘‘I’ve appeared in Musoc’s
production of Cabaret as SallyBowles, the North CanterburyMusical Society’s season ofBeauty and the Beast, playingthat fluffy French duster‘‘Babette’’, and the BlackPeach Theatre Company’sannual Gender BenderConcert,’’ she says.Ms Jamison comes from a
musical family.‘‘My father, Elwin, who
passed away in 2010, couldpick up any instrument andproduce music.‘‘He taught me andmy sister
Kitty to sing, mostly folkmusic, but he was always veryencouraging of us trying newthings,’’ she says.‘‘Mum (Jeneane) can play
almost any drum, andsurprises me with stray tuneson the piano or whistle.’’Kitty, a Year 11 student at
Tawhiti Unlimited HighSchool in Christchurch, is ‘‘anincredible performer’’ andhas a role in TheWizard of Oz.Ms Jamison loves
performing on stage.‘‘When I leave a theatre,
after watching a show, I feel
so energised andoverwhelmed with joy by whatI’ve seen.‘‘If I can make an audience
feel like that when they leave, then I’ve done my job,’’ shesays. When not working at the
speech and drama school, shehas a second job at RealityBites Cafe in Rangiora’sGables Arcade. However, Ms Jamison is
leaving Rangiora next yearandmoving to Wellington.‘‘I want to use the
experience as a steppingstone to further myperformance career andhopefully end up in London inthe next few years,’’ she says.If someone was to ask her
advice on a career in theperforming arts she would tellthem to be brave.‘‘It’s going to take a lot of
practice and youmight not beperfect straight away, buteven Idina Menzel has topractice.‘‘Along the way, you’ll meet
the most amazing people andshare with them incredibleexperiences that will last withyou for a lifetime.’’
TheWizard of Oz is beingperformed at the RangioraTownHall until Saturday,October 3. Tickets: TownHallCinemas.
