Elected regional body wanted by MayorsBy DAVID HILL
Continued Page 2
North Canterbury’sMayorswant a fully elected regionalcouncil restored by 2019 at thelatest.Responding to the
Government’s proposal of amixedmodel governancestructure for EnvironmentCanterbury (ECan) announcedlast week, theMayors sayrestoring a democratic electedregional council remains apriority.EnvironmentMinister Dr
Nick Smith andAssociate LocalGovernmentMinister LouiseUpston proposed amodel totake effect in time for the 2016local body elections for aregional council with sevenelected councillors and sixappointed. The proposal is out for public
consultation, with submissionsclosing onMay 1.It has been challenged by
HurunuiMayorWintonDalleywho asked theministers whythe option of a fully electedregional council is not being
offered now.‘‘I did challenge theminister
why therewasn’t an option of afully elected council and I thenchallenged him to ensure thepublic was fully informedwhyit was not an option.’’‘‘The recommendation is not
surprising as they areconsistent with the commentstheMinister (Dr Smith) hasexpressed over a long period. They have a belief that theCanterburyWaterManagmentStrategy has not beencompleted and I expect they
would havewanted the planembedded by now.’’Dr Smith has since issued a
press release saying theproposal allows for amajorityof elected representativeswhile ensuring continuedmomentumon the CanterburyWaterManagement Strategy(CWMS) and earthquakerecoveryworkwith appointedrepresentatives remaining onboard.WaimakaririMayorDavid
Ayers andKaikouraMayorWinstonGray say they accept
the proposal on the condition afully electedECan is restoredin 2019.‘‘This is OK for three years,
but we need to get back to afully elected council by 2019,’’Mr Ayers says.‘‘I would like to see some
investigation into subregionalcommittees, perhaps enhancedzone committeeswith someelectedmembers. There needsto be a strong local voice in thewayECan formulates localpolicy.’’

Independent council essentialFromPage 2
MrAyers says a regionalcouncil independent ofdistrict authorities remainsessential for Canterburygiven the vastness of theregion andwith riversserving as districtboundaries. He says it is important to
remember only one of theMayors whowere around
when the ECan councillorswere sacked inMay 2010remains in office (SelwynMayor Kelvin Coe).Mr Gray is unconcerned at
the possible lack ofrepresentation for Kaikoura, with only one or twocouncillors for all of NorthCanterbury.‘‘I guess we are out of the
fringe so it’s probably not
ideal, but it’s up to thecommunity here to lobbyeffectively. It’s not a hugecommunity up here andwedon’t have the same issueswith irrigation that they dofurther south.’’Mr Gray is unsure about
the effectiveness of electedzone committees as it can bea challenge finding enoughlocal people to stand. Mr
Dalley says it is legitimatefor councils to appointcommittees to advise them,as long as the council iselected. The proposed structure
would have four electedcouncillors for Christchurchand one each for NorthCanterbury, central / MidCanterbury and SouthCanterbury.

Archway restored to former gloryBy DAVID HILL
West Eyreton’s WorldWar Onememorial archway has been restoredin time for the Anzac Day centennial. The archway of brick and red stone,
which was built in 1922 in front of theWest EyretonHall, was destroyed inthe September 2010 earthquake. However it has been restored to its
former glory, while the two iron gatesare being dipped and painted ready forthe unveiling on Anzac Day.West EyretonHall Committee
chairmanKelvyn Scott says the projectcost $170,000, paid for by grants fromthe Lotteries Commission and theWaimakariri District Council. He says the council provided several
designs for the new archway ‘‘but wewere very adamant we wanted it backthe way it was’’.‘‘When you think about how they
built it back then, it lasted pretty wellandmodern technology has allowed usto keep the original design, but it hasbeen engineered to last a lot longer.’’A blessing and dedication will be led
by the Cust / West Eyreton RSA at theWest Eyretonmemorial archway andgates at 11.45am, after its annualservice at Cust at 10am. Lightrefreshments will follow in the hall, served by theWest Eyreton SchoolPTA.TheWest Eyreton soldiers’ memorial
was unveiled on June 4, 1922, by thethen PrimeMinisterWilliamMassey. The archway and gates were previouslyrepaired in 1978 due to wear and tear.At the end of the war, theWest
Eyreton soldiers were welcomed homeby a celebration in the hall and thewords ‘‘CeadMille Failthea’’ are stillprinted on the wall to this day, whichmean, in Gaelic, ‘‘a hundredthousandwelcomes’’.Unlike other rural halls in the
Waimakariri district, theWest EyretonHall continues to bemanaged by a localcommittee.Committeemember Angus
Robertson says it is not knownwhenthe hall was first built, but the earliestsurviving record dates back to about1905. He says the hall has beenextended to and rebuilt over the years, with the roof the only original part ofthe building still in tact.An extension added in 1991 was
matchlined to retain the hall’satmosphere and ‘‘keep it looking like aheritage building’’. A kitchen wasadded to the back of the hall in 2001.Mr Scott says there used to be a rifle
range on the hall grounds and a widevariety of clubs and organisations haveused the hall over the years. However today it is mainly used for
weddings, community functions, meetings and parties at the weekend.Committeemember Russell King
says the hall will be open to the publicon Anzac day and it is a good
opportunity for the public to see whatis available.‘‘We have had new families move into
the area so a lot of people don’t evenknowwe are here, so this is a goodchance for the community to look at thefacilities.‘‘It just blows people away when they
come inside. From the outside theythink it’s an old, grey building, but onthe inside it looks like it has just beenbuilt 100 years ago.‘‘It’s the result of 100 years of loving
care.’’

interaction between politicians, community leaders and those on theland,’’ says Charles.‘‘The aim is to highlight ‘best
practice’ and to explore new ideasthat will ultimately benefit thewholecountry, not just the rural sector’’.The topics covered traverse a range
of issues including: the role ofgovernment in supporting agriculturein the 21st Century; biosecurityincursions and their impact onfarmers; sustainable farmingpractices that will deliver valueadded opportunities forNewZealand;the importance of agriculture toNewZealand’s economic future; the valueof water storage and opportunitiesand challenges in establishingirrigation schemes and a localgovernment perspective on issuesfacing farmers and the ruralcommunity. The TeMania estate is an amazing
venue and is worth visiting in its ownright. The organisers are expecting
several hundred farmers, and peopleinterested in the rural sector, toattend the forum. I will definitely bethere.I hope that plenty of others will join
me.
Complex and challengingHurunui landowners are currentlygrapplingwith two complex andchallenging issues that are creatingconsiderable tension betweenthemselves, government policy, legislative requirements, the demandsof organisations and agencies, and theNewZealand public at large. These issues result from statutory
planning processes directed by theResourceManagement Act (RMA) andgovernment policies.Council has the responsibility of
leading the community through theseprocesses andHurunuiDistrict Councilhas chosen to engagewith thecommunity by sitting around the tableworking collaboratively to findsolutions. This gives all parties the opportunity
to understand each others perspective, understand legal requirements, understand the ‘intent’ of policies, andcollectively find solutions. This process gives the community the
opportunity to have input into ProposedPlans, as opposed to the normalRMAprocesswhereby Council in relativeisolation from the community ‘Proposes’the Plan. For anyone to then influence a
Proposed Plan they need to submit in avery formal, expensive, and for some anintimidating process. While this formalRMAprocess will
ultimately still occur, having the
opportunity to influence and shape a‘Proposed Plan’must be amore civilisedand affordable approach, resulting in aplanmore closely reflecting communityaspirations, while at the same timeaddressing the issues that the Plan isintended to address.Protection ofNatural Biodiversity is
one of those issues, which I havewrittenabout previously, however there’s stillsomeway to go to find a solution. At the heart of this debate is theRMA
which provides for the identificationandmapping of ‘Protected Areas’ onprivate land. This arbitrary regulatoryapproach alienates landowner goodwilland doesn’t protect against biodiversityloss and deterioration. It’s clear in this District that the best
protected, restored, andmanaged areasof Biodiversity are those that theLandowner initiates, values, and haspride in.We havemany outstanding examples
of these. However, with a history of often
indiscriminant and unnecessarydestruction of native vegetation andnatural habitats, many hold strong viewsthat landowners cannot be trusted toprotect what is left and that strongregulatory rules are required.Trust, cooperation and perseverance
are required during this process if thebest outcome for the environment andthe community is to be realised.
Dear Editor,While I agreewithMichaelGousmet
(letters 19/3/15) that depreciation fundingis a flawedconcept financially, ultimatelysomethingneeds tobedone to improveHurunuis’s infrastructure.Whether youcall that depreciation fundingorreplacement funding is only amatter of thelevel you set the contribution rate at orhowmuch ratepayerspay.Theproblem in theHurunui is historic
underinvestment in infrastructureas aresult of successive councils trying to keeprates as lowaspossible. This situationcoupledwithextremeweather events andpopulationexpansionmeans that thisparsimony is nowcatchingupwith today’sratepayers. Part of this historicproblemhasbeen thebelief that businesspeopleautomaticallymakegoodcouncillorswhenthere is clearly adislocationbetween
business, which generally operates onshort termobjectives forprofit, to a councilwhichoperateswithin longer termobjectives, particularly for roading, waterand sewage, andhas a fixed income fromratepayers.OnethirdofHurunui’s budget is raised
byHanmerSpringswhich is a reserveandonwhich thereare very tight legislativecontrols on the income it generates. It ispity that the revenue raised inHanmercannot beusedmore freely to support thedistrict throughwhich tourists travel inorder to enjoyHanmer’s facilities. Thishowever, wouldneeda radical overhaul oftheLocalGovernmentAct but it looks as ifAucklandmaybepushing formore tradingfreedom. What’s good for the goose shouldbe good for the gander?Yours,RonMeyer,AmberleyRD1.

Old truck brings back memories
Memory lane . . . Andy Childs, ofWoodend, left, with the 1950 Fordson truckhe used to drive with the truck’s presentowner, Brian Moir, of Rangiora.
PHOTO SHELLEY TOPP.
By SHELLEY TOPP
Aphotograph of a 1950 Fordson truck inTheNews recently tookWoodendmanAndy Childs on a trip downmemorylane. The little grey truck is now owned by
BrianMoir, of Rangiora, but used to bethe property of theRangiora BoroughCouncil where Andy beganwork as anapprentice gardenerwhen hewas 16, in1974.Back then they called the little truck
‘‘Lizzy’’.Therewere only ‘‘two or three people’’
working in the parks and reservesdepartment at that time and they had toshare the truckwith ‘‘boss’’, saidMrChilds. However, after a brand newMazda
1600 truck arrived at the council, theFordson becameMrChilds’ workvehicle.Hewill never forget having to slam the
truck into reverse and then plant his foothard on the accelerator, flying alongbackwards to avoid a large piece ofroofing frame that had ripped freeduring highwinds andwas headingstraight for him.Mr Childs was unaware theFordson
could go that fast in reverse, but he’spleased she could as it gave him justenough time to narrowly avoid the flyingdebris during the big Canterbury stormof 1975whenwinds peaked at 195kmph.Although Lizzy could be‘‘tricky to startat times’’ shewas a real workhorse, hesaid, cartingmany big loads of gardenrubbish, collected from the councilparks and grounds, and heavy loads ofsoil during landscapingwork.Hewas not too impressed, on his first
day at work, Lizzy stalled and refused togo any further after a short drive out ofthe council yard. She had to be towed back to the garage
and had the young council apprenticemechanic baffled for awhile. However,it turned out awire had come loose andonce repaired shewas quickly back inwork.Mr Childs was pleased to see his old
friend in such good order, perfectlyrestored byMrMoir and still in use, butwith amuchmoremore sedentary lifenow.Although the truck had nomotor or
gearboxwhenMrMoir bought her for$120, she starts first time now, testimonyto his skill and attention to detail inbringing her back to life.

Professor impressedA German professor was so impressedwith Rangiora New Life School, shestayed for four weeks during aresearch visit to New Zealand.Professor Petra Freudenberger
Lotz, who said farewell to the schoollast week, says she intended to visitseveral schools to compare the NewZealand school systemwith Germanschools, but she found ‘‘what I’vedreamed for’’ at Rangiora New LifeSchool with its Christian character.‘‘I’ve never seen a school like this.
The teachers here are so friendly andopenminded. The most importantthing here is the Christianity and it’snot only on paper, but in their hearts. It’s such a great atmosphere.‘‘I interviewed the students and they
told me that they feel welcome andsupported.‘‘They told me that every teacher
does his / her best and they have somuch fun and at the same time theylearn a lot.‘‘They said ‘every day I want to go to
school’.‘‘Not one student told me that ‘I’m no
good at this school’ and that’s reallyunusual. I would have expected atleast one or two of the students to saysomething bad about the school.’’She says she also interviewed
German exchange students studying atRangiora New Life School, as well assome at other New Zealand schools, and their responses were the same.Unlike in New Zealand, religious
studies is a compulsory subject inGerman secondary schools.Professor FreudenbergerLotz, who
teaches religious studies at KasselUniversity to student teachers, hasmade a video about her time atRangiora New Life School which sheplanned to screen in Germany thisweek at a refresher training workshopwith 100 teachers.‘‘It’s a big chance to learn something,
so it’s important for the teachers tohave an example like this at theschool, of Christianity in action.‘‘I love to speak about New Zealand.
I think the teachers here have goodmethods and they are excellentteachers.’’ Professor FreudenbergerLotz also trains teachers inSwitzerland and Austria. As well as the film, she plans to write
a book about her findings.

Concert fundraiser
Chris Firkin.
By DAVID HILL
Local singer Chris Firkin is set toperform in the first public concert inthe newly reopened Oxford TownHall.Chris will perform alongside fellow
vocal artist Sarah Templeton and theChristchurch City Chorus in a concertin the town hall this Saturday (March28) from 7pm.The concert is a fundraiser for the
Arts in Oxford Gallery.‘‘This concert has quite a bit of
significance, being the first big liveshow in the Oxford TownHall since it’sreopening and this is a goodopportunity to come out and support alocal performer and raise somemoney,’’ gallery founding directorBrent Firkin says.‘‘It will be a fantastic performance.‘‘Sarah does some beautiful duets
with Chris, so it will be a fabulousshow.’’Chris grew up in the Oxford area and
nowworks as an itinerant musicteacher at Oxford Area School.Brent says the Christchurch City
Chorus, which is New Zealand’snumber one ‘‘a capella harmonywomen’s chorus’’ and isinternationally recognised, willperform a two hour show.He says the Arts in Oxford gallery
has been going for five years and hasbeen wellsupported by the localcommunity and has received fundingfrom the Canterbury Community Trustto help in its establishment. However, this funding can no longer be reliedupon.‘‘We have had a fantastic funding
partner in the Canterbury CommunityTrust, but the demand for funding dueto the earthquakes is huge, so ourfunding has been reduced.‘‘We are a notforprofit
organisation, so we operate quite
differently to a retail gallery. We arethere to support the artist and anyprofit we domake goes back into thecost of running the establishment.‘‘The gallery has been very
successful, but without the funding wewill struggle, so rather than just askthe community for money we want tooffer something for them.’’Tickets cost $25 for adults and can be
purchased from the Arts in OxfordGallery, the Oxford Service Centre,Oxford Area School and Emma’s atOxford, or by phoning Chris Firkin on(03) 3124681 or 0211136888. Door saleswill also be available.

Shore Accounting Solutions operate a little differently from the usual, traditional accountingfirm.
By utilising online systems such as Xero accounting software, we can not only provide up todate financial reporting but also reduce your time and cost. Best of all we offer fixed monthlyfees for a range of services so you know exactly what you’ll get for how much rather than get amassive bill at the end of the year or even random bills during the year for who knows what.
Most accounting firms will charge small businesses $1,500 to $5,000 and more just to completeyear end accounts – information that while important is historical and outdated. From as low as$125+GST per month we can take care of your GST and year end accounts while providingregular management reports and meetings, so you can see how your business is trading rightnow, not 12 months ago. This means you can make more informed business decisions ratherthan guessing at the current financial performance and position of your business.
We are also more than happy to prepare and file tax returns for individuals, investment trusts, rentals or anyone else requiring assistance with their taxes.

Income tax may be due on lump sumsIf you havewithdrawn or transferred alump sum froma foreignsuperannuation scheme youmay needto pay income tax on the amount. How it works depends onwhen the
lump sumwaswithdrawn, and howyou’ve accounted for your scheme in thepast, but broadly speaking you have fouryears from the date you arrive inNewZealand towithdraw foreign superfunds for it to be tax exempt. The fouryear lump sumexemption
period generally applies to lump sumsreceived on or after Apri1 1, 2014, if youhave not previously had an exemption. The exemption period starts from the
date you become aNewZealand citizenand runs until the end of 48months.If you receive a lump sum a single
payment paid to you directly ortransferred to yourNewZealand orAustralian superannuation scheme within the first four years of becoming aNewZealand tax resident, no taxwillhave to be paid on the amount.A lump sumdoes not include a
pension paid regularly to you from aforeign superannuation scheme whichis generally taxed in full when received.Inmost cases, youwill need to pay
income tax on lump sums received afterApril 1, 2014, unless you qualify for theexemption.Advice from an accountant should be
sought to calculate the tax.If you accounted for the income from
your scheme under the foreign
investment fund (FIF) rules and filed atax return beforeMay 20, 2013, youwereable to continue using theFIF rulesfollowing the April 1 deadline last year.If you transfer a lump sum to a
KiwiSaver scheme, youmay have to payincome tax and student loanrepayments. You canwithdraw fundsfrom yourKiwiSaver account to pay
InlandRevenue. Contact your schemeprovider for details.NewZealandmay have a double tax
agreement with the country that yourscheme is based in.The terms of the agreementmay affect
the extent to whichNewZealandmaytax your lump sum. These agreementsalso determinewhether you are able toclaim a foreign tax credit in yourNewZealand income tax return for foreigntax paid, or if youmust apply for refundfrom the other country’s tax authority.Formore information go to
www.ird.govt.nz.
Student loans dueStudent loan repayments are due foroverseasbased borrowers onMarch31.If you’re based overseas and not
taking a repayment holiday you arerequired to make two repayments eachyear towards your student loan. These are generally due on
September 30 andMarch 31. Paying ontimemeans you will avoid latepayment interest (formerly late
payment penalties). If you have a different due date for
some reason this will be shown on youroverseas based obligation notice. Thiscould be because your repaymentholiday has ended, or we’ve assessedyou after the standard due date.As an overseasbased borrower, your
repayment obligation is generallybased on your loan balance as at March31 plus the annual administration fee.

Cats lost and foundAn article about Tilly, a Burmese catwhich has beenmissing from aRangiora address since in earlyDecember, has prompted a flurry ofemails and phone calls to The News.Several callers believe they may
have sighted a cat similar to Tillywhile others have emailed to say theyhave lost their cat.But for one person who emailed,
there was a silver lining. She had no sooner emailed about
Simba being missing from herRangiora home for 10 weeks when shereceived a phone call which has led toSimba coming home to her family.Liz says their 10yearold gold
pedigree Bengal cat which hasdistinctive black stripes and spots, seemed to have ‘‘vanished off the faceof the earth’’. But he turned up 12 kmfrom home. She says on Sunday morning she
received a call from aman who said hissister had a cat that had been comingon to her property for the last week orso. Thinking it was her brother’s catshe had contacted him and he in turncontacted the owner after trollingthrough the lost pets section on TradeMe.‘‘I would never have thought a cat
would travel that far away that isnearly in Oxford,’’ says Liz.‘‘Reading about Tilly in The News
was like reading about our cat, but the
difference is we have ours back home.So Tilly’s owners shouldn’t give uphope. She well might be found.Unfortunately Karen is still
searching for her wee Birman cat thatwent missing in September last year. She says it is a very similar tale to
Tilly except there had been a call froma woman in Ohoka saying she had seenher on her lifestyle block.‘‘It was totally out of the blue as we
are miles andmiles away in Rangiora Northbrook area.‘‘We searched for months and
searched all the surrounding areasand farms near where this Ohokawoman had seen her.‘‘We had the local schools and vets
and neighbours all looking but shevanished with no trace! We believe shewas stolen as she was an expensivecat,’’ says Karen.Michelle, who lives in Freyberg
Street, Rangiora is also still lookingfor her tabby cat, Missy, who wentmissing on January 19.‘‘She was very much a loved family
pet, she was very happy and attachedto us. It seems odd that she has justvanished. I have also done all the doorknocking, flyers, flyers at the vets, contacted the council, social media(facebook, cat care, pets on the net andtrade me).‘‘She is also microchipped. She has
just vanished.’’
Lost and found propertyThe following property has been reported as lost to theRangiora Police have youseen it?AHiab Pathfinder remote control, amemory card in case, a brownwallet,a

Final façade workto start outsideJunction Hotel
Work is about to start on final strengthening and securingwork on the heritage façade at the site of the former JunctionHotel in Rangiora’s High Street.
The area will be fenced to allow the work to be undertaken. Thiswill mean that the footpath and car parking spaces will be closedbetween the Rangiora Pharmacy and Postie Plus from Monday 23March 2015 until approximately 10 April 2015.
Once the work is completed, the fencing will be removed and thetemporary containers over the footpath will be permanently removed.
Trekkers roll on . . . A 1923 Dennis truck heads up the team of Southern Trekkers on theirjourney to raise funds forWestpac rescue helicopters in the South Island. PHOTO: DAYNA BURTON.
Homeward boundThe Southern Trekkers rolled intoAmberley on Monday. The Trekkers had just completed the
West Coast leg of their road trip toraise funds for Westpac Rescuehelicopters in the South Island. They pulled up in town for a lunch
stop as they began their journey downthe east coast and home.Fifteen Trekkers left Invercargill on
March 12 and will arrive home onMarch 28 after travelling 2100km.Iain Bulling says the trek has asked a
fair bit of their ‘‘toys’’ which areparked in sheds for much of their life. However, most were managing to
keep up with the pace.Only one had to stop on theWest
Coast for a bit while a crank shaft wasfitted. It had since caught up with thetrekkers.
Others hadminor issues with waterpumps and generators but in general ithad been a fantastic trip to date.Mr Bulling says Southern Trekkers
was formed after a trek led by hisfather a Child Cancer fundraiser. When the group decided to embark
on a trek to the New ZealandPloughing championships at Lincolnin Canterbury in 2013 it was decidedthey needed a name.Southern Trekkers was formed and
aims to have Fun Runs to variousvintage events and do treks forcharitable causes, said Mr Bulling. Most of the members are associated
with vintage clubs throughoutSouthland and South Otago,Thornbury Vintage Club, Te Anau,Central Southland, Edendale,Riversdale and Tapanui.

about his experiences and his own vegegarden. It took aweewhile sometimes toget through the judging,’’ she said.‘‘Another judge is our present day one

Vacancies to fill at Feds AGMBy DAVID HILL
LyndaMurchison.
FederatedFarmersNorth Canterbury islooking for a newpresident with LyndaMurchison stepping down at nextmonth’s annualmeeting.TheWaipara farmer has served 18
months in the role since she replacedDarfield farmerNeil Stott in September2013 and became the province’s secondwoman president.MrsMurchison says she plans to focus
her attention on completing a PhD onenvironmental ethics inNewZealandfarming through CanterburyUniversityand in environment planningwork.‘‘It’s that difficult thing, there’s not
many people aroundwho knowplanningand farming, so that’s why I feel I need todomore of the planning rather than thegovernance side of things. That’s where Icanmakemy biggest contribution.’’Senior vicepresident FrankBrenmuhl
is expected to be nominated forpresident, howeverMrsMurchisonencourages othermembers to put theirhands up.MrBrenmuhl is originally from the
West Coast where hewas a dairy farmerand has served on theFederatedFarmers national dairy executive. Hehas since retired to Aylesbury, nearChristchurch, where he has a nutorchard. All positions are up for reelection and
there are also vacancies for dairy andgrain and seed spokespersons.Greenpark sharemilker Vaughan
Beazer has filled the role of dairyspokesman for the last 18months, butwill be leaving the province in June totake up a newposition. Judith Earl
Williams andDaveWinter have beensharing the role of caretaker grain andseed spokespersons.‘‘These are both key roles andwe have
learnt how important it is that we havestrong voices across the boardrepresenting all those key roles.‘‘It’s no good that peoplemoan that
Feds isn’t representing their interests ifyou’re not willing to put the put effort in.‘‘FederatedFarmers is the lobby group
for farmers, but Feds is its farmers, anditsmembers need towork as oneorganisation. So it needs farmers to stepup and take on these roles.’’Meat and fibre spokesmanDanHodgen
is expected to stand for reelection. This year’s North Canterbury AGMand
field daywill be held on Thursday, April9, from 9.30amatMt Vulcan farm onReecesRoad, Omihi, owned byRoss andBruce Little.‘‘It is a very scenic property with great
coastal views. Even if you just come forthe views alone, it is worth comingalong,’’ MrsMurchison says. While Bruce Little nowmanages the
farm, his fatherRoss Little is a pastFederatedFarmersNorth Canterburypresident, has served on theNorthCanterbury Pest Liaison Committee andis a formerEnvironment Canterbury andHurunui district councillor.Separate AGMswill be held at 10am for
themeat and fibre, dairy and grain andseed sections, before a farm tour at10.30amand a picnic lunch.Guest speakers will include Lincoln
University professorDerrickMoot andformerEnvironment Canterburyconsultant RobGerard.ProfessorMoot will speak on using
pasture species adaptable to dryconditions for large dry land andirrigated properties, whileMrGerard’stopic will be ‘‘farming to numbers orfarming to plan’’.‘‘It will be a good day out and it will be
a good opportunity to get some goodinformation for farmingmore effectivelyin dry conditions and being prepared,’’MrsMurchison says.‘‘And therewill be information around
nutrients andwater which is a big issueat themoment.’’To round out the day, a social evening
will be held at theWaiparaHall, withFederatedFarmers national executivemember Chris Allen speaking about theimportance of of getting involved.

Southbrook, Seftonto contest club finalSouthbrook and Sefton will contest theCanterbury Country Combined Cricketfinal on Sunday at Mainpower Oval. This means the final round robin
fixtures this coming Saturday arelargely irrelevant, as both finalistsmade their places secure in theweekend. It was an easy task for Sefton as its
opponent SouthMalvern was unable tofield a team.Southbrookmatched up to Leeston /
Southbridge, last season’s champions, which was in the game at 105/2 at drinks. That position declined rapidly to be
all out for 166 to the unlikely wiles ofMatt Brine who claimed five wickets. He then backed up his batting heroics
of last week to lead his team to aconclusive victory, losing just twowickets.Leeston/Southbridge 166 (T Doyle 60;
