PHOTO: AMANDA BOWES By AMANDA BOWES A fire that could have had devastating consequences for houses in the small rural township of Hawarden in North Canterbury, has been a timely reminder of the extreme fire risk in the district. The blaze, which started in a shelter belt between properties and was fanned by a brisk nor’ west wind, quickly engulfed trees before taking hold of a garage. Principal Fire Officer for the Hurunui District Council Allan Grigg, warns nor-westers combined with having had no decent rain since June, is making ground conditions extremely dry and people need to be careful around anything that has the potential to start a fire. ‘‘We are all on tenterhooks with the conditions and potential for fire and plead with everyone to take extra care,’’ says Mr Grigg. Hawarden Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Murray Tilson, says when the brigade arrived it was clear they would need back up from Waikari and the Rural Fire Service. The fire was ‘‘complex’’ as it burned vegetation, structures and the contents of the garage, which included LPG cannisters, petrol and other flammable items. Firefighters donned breathing apparatus as the contents of the shed created toxic smoke and explosions were heard throughout the village as the LPG ignited. Adding to the complexity was the distance from fire hydrants. Ten lengths of hose were needed to reach the blaze and extra water was needed from the rural fire tanker. Another smaller grass fire started about 60 metres away from the main fire and was quickly brought under control. Having the fire brigade close by, a prompt call out and a nor-west wind saved neighbouring properties from being engulfed by the flames. The best thing people could do now if they feel their houses are under threat from a near by fire, is block the down pipes at the bottom and fill the guttering with water so any sparks or embers are doused, says Mr Grigg. Mr Tilson says it was a good effort from those fighting the fire in difficult conditions. Investigations are continuing into the cause of the blaze.

Carving a path . . . Oxford Community volunteers and friends, ranging from 4 80 years,

carve a path to begin forming awalking track through the Ashley Gorge bush. PHOTO: SUPPLIED.

    Track being formed

    By ROBYNBRISTOW

It is all hands on deck to clear a track

through native bush near the Ashley

    Gorge reserve.

    Fouryearolds to 80yearoldsmixed

hardwork with fun at two recent

working bees giving the first stage of the

project a onehour easy return trip

from the Ashley Gorge Reserve through

    Department of Conservation (DOC) land

    real impetus.

It is hoped in the future the hardwork

will help grow the project to include the

    DOCwaterfall track, and eventually for

    moremature walkers, a hill climbwith

the reward being amazing views over

Ashley Gorge and beyond, across the

    Canterbury Plains.

Project leader Dave Shelton says the

spirit of the young and how they put

their hearts into it was an inspiration to

    all.

Manager of track development for the

    Ashley Gorge Reserve Advisory Group

    JohnBurton, in coordination with

DOC, says there has been a need for

walking tracks near the Ashley Gorge

Reserve for a long time and all the DOC

    landwith its spectacular bush and

specimen trees was waiting just a

    stones throw away.

And even better, here is such a great

    opportunity for our people, especially

the young ones, to be not only learning

about their native heritage but to be

    involved in planning, building and

    conserving a wonderful, lasting asset

    for their future."

It is really rewarding to see the

interest we are already getting from our

local schools, scout groups and others

wanting to be involved, he says.

    Alongside the trackbuilding there

would also be a need to develop a pest

    control programmewhichwould be

    great handson educational projects for

    young people.

The track is routed to include focal

points of interest with unusually large

    specimens of native trees including

    black beech, matai, broadleaf, fuchsia

    and kanuka.

    An effective pest control programme

will aim at enhancing the habitat for an

endangered native snail as well as

creating a safe island to improve the

numbers of native birdlife, he says.

    Along with developing the walking

    track system, the Ashley GorgeReserve

Advisory Group is also planning a series

    of information boards with subjects

including local history, flora and fauna

    and track information.

A substantial shelter to house them

    will be situated in theWaimakariri

    District Councilowned Ashley Gorge

    Reserve grounds.

Mr Burton says anyone interested in

lending a hand to help clear the track

can attend aworking bee on Saturday,

December 5 Dec from 9am to 12 noon,

meeting at the Ashley Gorge Reserve

    office.

Formore information and to get on

    the volunteer email register, please

contact Dave Shelton on 03 312 4718 or

At home . . . Mike Davis, Paula Garcia (left), Ann and daughter Lorena outside the Hawarden

Tavern and Cafe. PHOTO: AMANDA BOWES.

    New tenants for tavern

    By AMANDA BOWES

    The Hawarden Tavern has new

tenants and the trustees couldnt be

    happier.

Mike Davis, his partner Paula Garcia

    andMikes mother Ann and toddler

Lorena have taken over the business

and are settling into the small North

    Canterbury town.

Mike grew up in Hawarden but left in

    1985 for work.

He always wanted to come back to

the area and after hearing the tavern

needed new lessees, talked it over with

the family who agreed it would be

    worth taking the punt.

Paula met Mike when she came out

from Brazil to work on a dairy farm.

She was training to be a vet and the two

hit it off when Paula got work on the

    dairy farmMike was managing. She

    ended up staying longer than

originally planned but had to return

home when her visa ran out.

After going back and forth between

New Zealand and Brazil, where she

    finished her vet internship, Paula

finally settled with Mike, along with

    their daughter Lorena.

Ann wanted to retire from teaching

andMike and Paula needed a carer for

Lorena if they were to lease the pub, so

Ann joined in the family venture.

Mike says it is great to be back living

in his home town and he has caught up

    with people from his past.

Paula is also happy living in

Hawarden she says she hates big

cities and likes the Kiwi climate.

The family have been thrown in at

the deep end as everything happened

    fast.

It needed to be that way to make it

    happen, says Mike.

The restaurant is up and running as

a cafe and Paula is bringing a touch of

Brazil to the menu, with such

    delicacies as her homemade cheese

    balls.

Mike is chef and has had plenty of

tips from his brother who is a good

    cook.

As the family develops the business,

they are hoping to introduce family

    days, meat raffles and other

    entertainment.

Aware of the need to build slowly,

the cafe is open from Tuesday to

Sunday from 8am to 4pm. The pub

    opens 4pm on Tuesdays and

    Wednesdays and 11am Thursday to

    Sunday.

The bottle store is also open and for

    people who want backbacker

    accommodation, the cabins are ready

for guests. While Paula misses her

family, she says her parents would like

to retire here also and will be having

an extended stay soon. She would like

to go to Australia to do a course which

would allow her to practice veterinary

medicine here, with a goal to work for

    the local veterinary practices.

    Rga health hub open

    Tuesdaywas a great day forNorth

    Canterbury aswe celebrated the

    opening of theRangioraHealthHub

    byMinister ofHealthHon Jonathan

    Coleman.

I can personally speak for the first

    class facilities and greatmaternity

staff following the arrival of the

newest addition to our family just over

    aweek ago.

Mywife had awonderful stay in the

    maternity unit with its northfacing

windows and homely feel, and it was

great forme to be able to visit them so

    close to home.

The new building has birthing and

    postnatal facilities, respite facilities

and a full kitchen catering for in

    house patientmeals aswell asMeals

    onWheels.

    This weeks openingwas a

    significantmilestone for our

community and I am looking forward

to 2017whenwe open the next stage.

This will see the relocation of the

    Hagley Outpatients building from

    ChristchurchHospital to add another

    800 squaremetres of space for

    additional services.

    The health hub providesNorth

    Canterburywith a central location for

    health services, connecting the

community to a variety of services.

    Withmy background inmental

health, it was great to also link the

    HealthMinister to thework being

    done byKaiapoi Borough School,

    which has developed several

    initiatives to help ensure the

    wellbeing of students. Research shows

us years three to seven postrecovery

    are themost difficult for psychological

    and social recovery.

Working in our local communities, I

know that the effects of the

earthquakes are still being felt and it

    was rewarding to bring theMinister

down tomeet upwith some of the

    mentalhealth service providers

working to help our young students

    increase resilience andwellbeing.

The start of theweek saw a high

level of interest from our rural

    residents who attended the Provincial

    Prioritiesmeeting in Oxford.

It was good to facilitate putting our

local issues before a spread of rural

basedMPs to help us to develop policy

    to further strengthen our

    communities.

    Bridge too expensive

    for limited benefit

I am often askedwhy they dont build

    another bridge across theWaimakariri.

    Often somewhere upstream in the

area of TwoChainRoad in Swannanoa is

mentioned and I am sometimes told that

there used to be a plan.

Well, there has never been a plan.

In 200001, a District Transport Study

was completed I chaired the group that

worked on it. It did look at that option

but wewere quickly told by the national

roading authority at the time that such a

bridgewould be too expensive for its

    limited benefit.

    The current two bridges (theNorthern

    Motorway andMainNorthRoad) cross

the river at a narrow cut that was dug

    between the twoWorldWars.

The river upstream is vastly wider and

    any bridgewould bemuch longer than

thosewe already have. In addition, there

is little roading structure on either side.

Most of the peoplewho use the bridge

from our northern side live in the

    RangioraKaiapoiWoodend/Pegasus

triangle and those further north feed

into the triangle over the twoAshley

    bridges. About 40,000 ofWaimakariris

55,000 people live in these areas.

A bridge that increases their distance

to Christchurch does notmake a lot of

sense given that the current bridges are

themost direct route and have a roading

    infrastructure directed at them.

A new bridgewould be a local road. It

    would still requireNewZealand

    Transport Authority approval to get

    government subsidy, which under new

rules is now just over 50 percent,

compared to the 60 percent we got for

    the newAshley bridge.

Because the river is the district

    boundary, the other 50%would be

    shared equally betweenChristchurch

    andWaimakariri, the same ratio that

    applies to theMainNorthRoad bridge.

    A far cheaper andmore effective

optionwould be to increase the capacity

    of theMotorway bridges.

Theywere built to take third lanes and

this option is now being actively

    considered as part of theNorthern

Arterial project due to start construction

    late next year.

This will be amotorway taking traffic

    directly to Christchurch fromChaneys.

Long service . . . John Guthrie is retiring after more than a quarter of a century at Kaiapoi

    Borough School. PHOTO: DAVID HILL

    Deputy bids farewell

    By DAVID HILL

    WhenJohnGuthrie came toKaiapoi

    BoroughSchool inSeptember 1988he

    thought itwouldbea short stay.

    Nowafter 27 years asdeputyprincipal at

the school, hehasdecided to call it a day.

    I camehereas a teachingdeputy

    principal after beingprincipal at

    LeithfieldSchool. I left therebecause it

wasquite small and I thought Iwould

comehere for threeor five years to get

experienceat a larger school and then

    becomeaprincipal.

But I nevermovedagain. I loved the

    community, the school and thewholedeal.

A few times I thought about leaving, but

    then I thoughtwhymove?

Its a funny feeling. I always said I

would retirewhen I got sickof it, but that

dayhasnever arrived. So Idecided if I

    dontmakemyself retire, I neverwill.

    WhenMrGuthrie first arrivedat

    KaiapoiBoroughSchool therewere200

    students and thedeputyprincipalwas full

time in the classroom. However, after a

    fewyears itwasdecided tomake the

    classes slight bigger soMrGuthrie could

    be released fromclassroomduties.

    Itmeant I couldprovidebackupand

    workwith thekids causing troubleand

    give the teachers amucheasierday,

    because theydidnt have toworry about

    those students.

    Eventually schools becameentitled to a

    nonteachingdeputyprincipal andnow

    KaiapoiBoroughSchool has twonon

    teachingdeputyprincipals. The school roll

    peakedatmore than400before the

    earthquakes and therearenow376

    students.

    MrGuthrie sayshehasnotmissedbeing

    in the classroom.

    Thebeauty of the rolehasalwaysbeen

    dealingwithpeople teachers, kids and

    parents. Theres a certainamount of

    paperwork, but not asmuchasaprincipal

and if youredoing thebits you love,

    yourehappynot tomove.

    I have literallywatchedkids from

    babies and then seen themcomebackwith

    their ownkids. Theres really something

special that youget out of these

    relationshipswithkids andparents that

    youcouldnt haveanyotherway.

    MrGuthrie sayshehasalwaysmadea

point of getting to knowall thekids and

    not just theoneswhoget in trouble.

I havealways thought thats unfair that

    certainkids get all theattention.Certainly

    theres kidswhoneedextrahelp, but all

kidsneed tohave that contact and feel

important. Teaching is about giving that

    feeling of being important andhaving

    strong selfesteemandknowing theyareas

    muchapart of theplaceas anyoneelse.

    Inhis retirement,MrGuthrieplans to

    get onwith someDIYprojects, do some

    travel andhemayeven return to the

    classroom todo somerelief teaching.

    PrincipalMurrayOverton saysMr

    Guthrie hasmadea significant

    contribution to the school, teachingand

    providing leadershipand support formany

    students and their families.

A special farewell is planned forFriday,

    December 11,with a communitypicnic at

12.30pmin the school grounds. In theevent

of rain thepicnicwill beheld in thehall.

A special assemblywill follow in thehall at

    1.45pm.Everyone iswelcome.

MrOverton says the school is compiling

a Journal for John and invites former

students and families to comeandwrite in

    it, paste in apictureorphotos ofMr

Guthrie, or contribute towards the gift.

    Caravan transformed

    Mitchells restored 1971 Zephyr Touring

    Caravan. PHOTO: SHELLEY TOPP

    By SHELLEY TOPP

What began as a simple caravan

    restoration developed into a highend

project, with the potential for something

    special at the finish.

    The project began inFebruary this

    yearwhenKikiMitchell, a doityourself

    enthusiast, fromRangiora, bought a

1971 Zephyr Touring caravan to restore.

It was to be her newproject, and she

    envisaged it would take amonth,

possibly two, to complete, doingmost of

    thework herself.

It was obvious the tiny caravan had

seen better dayswhen she bought it, but

    she hadnt realised howmuchwork

needed to be done until she got it home.

The interior of the caravan had to be

    completely gutted, thoroughly checked

for leaks, rewired, and relined, before

any of the decoratingwork could begin,

and the exterior also needed a lot of

    work.

    Kiki called in Grant Shadbolt

    Building Solutions Limited, in

    Rangiora, Autobody andGlass Repairs

    Limited, inKaiapoi, andDoig Auto

    Electrical, inRangiora, to help.

    The project became known asKikis

    GrandDesign. Its goneway over the

    initial restoration budget, and thework

    has takenmonths longer to complete,

    but the little tourers elegant

    transformation is stunning to see.

The high level of skill from the

tradesmen involved in the project, and

Kikis clever eye for design, style and

    colour have transformed this caravan

into a lovely, warm, lightfilled holiday

home onwheels for three people, or a

spare room to spend some quiet time in

    at home.

Its also a placewhere one of Kikis

cats,Will, loves to spend time snoozing,

    and nowonder.

There is soft lighting, lovely hand

made curtains, a dining table for four,

soft seats with cute cushions, a gas

    cooker, amicrowave, storage space, and

    even a fridge.

Outside the caravan there has been a

stylish facelift also, with shiny newpaint

work inwhite and soft pink trim.

Kiki says she is pleasedwith how the

caravan has turned out, and her

husband, Steve, is also chuffedwith the

    end result.

    Restoration skills give new life

New life . . . The 1939 Farmall F14 restored by Ian Thornley before and after.

    By AMANDA BOWES

    Waikaris IanThornleyhas restored

    tractors and farmmachinery formany

years andhis latest project gavenew life to

    a 1939FarmallF14 rowcrop tractor.

    The76yearold tractorhadbeen sitting

ina shed inRedcliffs for 30 years and

    when tractor enthusiast,WintonDalley

    told theownerabout IanThornleys

restoration skills, he contactedhim to see

    if hewould takeon the challenge.

    Iwashappy todo it. As Imnowretired

it helps fill in thedays, says Ian.

    Ianwent toRedcliffs to lookat theold

    tractor anddiscussedwhatneeded tobe

done to get it back into shape.

    Once theFarmall hadbeendelivered to

    Waikari, Ian got crackingandbegan

    pulling the tractor tobits.

    Thedecisionhadbeenmade to strip the

    tractordownand rebuildasnecessary.

    Ian says the seaairhadeatenawaypart

    of theheadandwhen themanifoldwas

    unbolted it broke in two.

    Because therewereno spares, Ianhad

the taskofmending thebits that needed it.

    Somepartswere sent awayand sand

    blasted, but the chassis, engineand

    steeringwere takencareof in the

    workshop. Ianalso restored theback

    wheels byhand.

    The fuel tankneededanewbottom, a

    newexhaustmanifoldwasmadeandpart

    of the tankmountbrackets needed

    replacingas theyhad rustedout.

    After around220hours ofwork, the

    Farmallwas looking likenewand running

    sweet. Ian thoughthis jobwasdone, but

    then theownerdecidedhewanteda

    startermotor insteadof the crankhandle

    sohecouldbe guaranteed the tractor

    would startwheneverhewanted.

    Thiswasa challengeof adifferent kind,

but Ian figuredout awayof fulfilling the

    ownerswishes theonly troublewas it

    meantpulling theFarmall to bits again.

    Ian split thedrivebetween the clutch

and the gearbox. He thengot a flywheel

    fromaHyundaiGetz andmachined it to

    make it lighter.

    Anotherbell housingwas thenmadeand

    thehyundai startermotorwasplaced in

    themiddleof the tractor.

Thanks to Ians ingenuity, the tractor

    cannowbe startedbypushing abutton,

    something itsmanufacturerwouldnever

    have thoughtpossible. Ian sayshe loves

restoring all types of old farmmachinery

    andmanyofhis restored tractorshave

    beenunwanted items.

    Thesemachineswerewhathelped

    makeNZagriculture get towhere it is

    todayand there is nothingworse than

    seeing themgo for scrap.

His restorations arent just for show.

    Withother keenvintage tractor

    New hope for long-term back

    pain sufferers.

After nearly eight years in New Zealand, Inversion Therapy has now gained a

reputation for success with long-term sufferers of back pain.

    Inversion New Zealand was

started eight years ago by Dave

    and Nancy Hare. Dave had

suffered over 20 years of back pain

    from degenerated discs and had

basically given up and decided to

    just live with it.

To me surgery was never an

option, he said, as long as I still

    could walk, there was hope.Dave

    tried everything; every time he

was overseas he would search for

    anything that could possibly help.

While on one of these overseas

    trips eight years ago, Dave

    discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups.

The first time I tried it, the pain

    disappeared and I was completely

pain free for about 30 minutes,

    nothing had done that,he said.

Dave never believed it would fix

him, as specialists had told me it

was irreversible, I now knew I had

a place to go every time I wanted

    some serious relief.

To Daves surprise the more he

used the table the longer the pain

    stayed away, until after nearly

    three months he was completely

    pain free.

    I couldnt believe it,Dave said.

I had spent large amounts of

    money on every formof treatment

    available and here was something

I had never heard of sorting it out

for me in avery short period of

    time.

It was then Dave decided to

    introduceTeeter intoNewZealand

    and Inversion NZ was born.

Over the years INZ has helped

    thousands of people get some

serious relief and has seen results

in not only backs, but necks,

    hips, knees, posture, circulation,

    increased height, blood pressure

    and lots more.

    We have testimonials from

    peoplewithover fifty years of back

problems and even have them in a

    number of schools inNewZealand

    for their special needs children,

said Dave. The blood to the brain

helps these kids and the results

    are excellent.

What this means for the ageing

population is that it maintains the

health of the brain as we all get

    older.

INZ now has a division putting

them into industry as back pain

    costs companies a considerable

    amount of lost production.

Both Dave and Nancy will be

    attending the shows. Dave told

me that he realised that, had he

not tried the Teeter for himself he

    would still be suffering,

    Iwouldstillbeamiserablegrumpy

bugger, living with pain, that is

why we do the shows, people

need to try it for themselves.

Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been

Inverting for seven years and has found it keeps him young

Most people actually get off with the pain either gone or

considerably less, he said. Come along to one of the

roadshows for a treatment , if you have completely resigned

yourself to having back or neck pain for the rest of your life,

the chances are you will be pleasantly surprised.

IT Is pure logIc As To HowTHe

    TeeTer INversIoN TAbleworks.

The Teeter Inversion Table works on three

    levels: Discs, Muscles and Posture.

Discs: It uses Gravity to apply traction, the

traction gently opens the discs and as they

open up they create suction, this suction draws

fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the

discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs

do not have their own blood supply, the rely on

transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to

keep them healthy and hydrated and over the

years as discs get thinner with age, they lose

the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a

sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are

harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with

nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the

    de-hydration causes degeneration. The Teeter

Inversion table slowly and gently brings the

hydration back into the discs, plumping them

up. This brings back lost height (most people

will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates

thenerve roots a lotmoreeffectively and returns

    quality of life.

Muscles:A lot of Pain isMuscular, whenmuscles

are stressed they become tight which restricts

    the flowofbloodand lymph through themuscle

so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. A reverse

stretch opens up the muscles and there is a

treatment on the table, which is called Rhythmic

traction, which is a gentle rocking motion. This

    stimulates circulation and encourages blood

flow through themuscles, which clears the lactic

acid into you lymph system where it stimulates

lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with

serious neck issues see a large an improvement

    after only one treatment.

posture: Poor posture is one of the major

cases of pain and is a major contributor to the

deterioration of the body with age. A difference

in leg length causes most of the hip and knee

issues, as they continue to place uneven loads

on the joints; much in the same way as the

misalignment of your wheels on your car, they

eventually wear away the wheel bearings.

Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult

due to muscle memory as it constantly pulls

the muscles to where they want to be. At a

level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the

muscles groups open up and slowly come back

into alignment, using the table daily, at least

once a day does not allow the memory to pull

the muscles out of alignment and slowly the

muscles start to lose their memory and go with

the flow, allowing the body to slowly come back

into correct posture. Then using the table once

a day will ensure it is kept there.

This is not rocket science, it is just pure logic,

if a machine is out of alignment it does not

last long, the only difference in the body and

a machine is the body is constantly repairing

itself, however if the wear and tear on the body

is greater than the bodies ability to repair itself,

it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the

body out of its decline and allows the body to

repair itself resulting a far healthier life

If you are serious about investing in your health

and really sorting your issues out, come see us

at the show, you have nothing to lose and the

chances are a lot to gain

    BACK or NECK PAIN?

    DEAR DAVE AND NANCY

In 2008 I had been living with a serious lower back pain

for many years due to two discs with serious degeneration

and was scheduled for a double spinal fusion at a cost of

$48,000. The Specialist had recommended many lifestyle

changes including changing my profession, which was not

practical as I own my own business.

At theWaikato Home Show I experienced a demonstration

on a Teeter Inversion Table by Dave and Nancy Hare. To

me the effect was amazing, I actually experienced some

serious relief which lasted for an hour or two, I was told

that the relief would last longer with time as long as I

used the table regularly, so with the surgery scheduled for

12 weeks time, having nothing to lose and a lot to gain I

purchased a Teeter. Four years on I still use my table on a

daily basis, my back is as strong as ever with very little or

completely no pain, I am still at my same profession and

working as hard as ever and most importantly I did not

have the surgery. I consider the purchase of my Teeter

has been one of my greatest investments, not only has it

enabled me to avoid serious and costly surgery, it has kept

me in my profession and it has brought my health back.

Thank you very much for the opportunity.

    Very best regards

    Paul Gordon

    TESTIMONIAL

In 2006, a three and a half year medical

study using the Teeter Hang-Ups was

    completed in the Regional Neuroscience

    Centre at Newcastle General Hospital.

It was conducted by one of the UKs

    leading Neurosurgeons and authorities on

back care and it was found that Inversion

Therapy reduced the need for spinal

surgery for Sciatica by 77% compared to

22% with traditional methods of treatment.

We will set the table to the relaxing angle

of 20 degrees, which gently relieves the

pressure on your spine and leaves you

    feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

After nearly eight years in NZ there are

now enough people using the Teeter

Hang-Ups to dispel the last of any doubts

that these really do work if you suffer

from Back or Neck Pain or simply just want
