    confirmed.

All five cruise ship visits are

scheduled for January, four of those by

    Australian cruise ship Coral Discoverer

which is due to arrive on January 2.

Coral Discoverer, which is set to

make return visits on January 14, 18 and

30, carries up to 72 passengers and 20

    crew.

    Another cruise ship, Silver

Discoverer, is also scheduled to visit on

January 18 and carries up to 120

    passengers and 96 crew.

    DestinationKaikoura general

manager Glenn Ormsby says the town is

    continuing to explore options to

address the issue of rocks in the South

Bay in a bid to attract cruise ships with

    700 ormore passengers.

    We are working with Environment

    Canterbury and the harbourmaster, so

we can increase the number of cruise

ships arriving here and attract bigger

    cruise ships.

If we can attract more and bigger

cruise ships there will be benefits for

    our neighbours as well.

So far the largest cruise ship to visit

    Kaikoura is the Seabourn Odyssey,

which has up to 450 passengers and 330

    crew.

The biggest cruise ships which visit

New Zealand have 2500 to 3000

    passengers, howeverMr Ormsby says it

is unlikely a cruise ship that big will

    visit Kaikoura anytime soon.

At this stage Id say zero. Theres a

lot of work to do before we can get over

1000.Weve got to cut our costs

accordingly and the logistics dont bare

    thinking about.

It can get pretty busy in South Bay

with all the fishing boats, so we have got

    tomake sure everything is done

    properly and its safe.

Mr Ormsby says cruise ship schedules

are subject to change due to the

weather and other issues, so it is

possible theremay be a last minute

additions to scheduled visits during the

season, as there has been in the past.

    Amnesty hope for Filipinos

    By ROBYNBRISTOW

    They are amazing people and

have really helped us through a

    real employment shortage.

They are loyal, work hard and

    are so lovely.

An advocate for Filipino dairy farm

workers in the Amuri area ofNorth

Canterbury, is hoping for some form of

amnesty for workers caught up in a

    visa scam.

    SharonDavieMartin says around 80

Filipinos are employed on dairy farms

in the Amuri area and she believed a few

maybe caught up in the scamwhere

    work experience details have been

pumped up on visa applications by

    immigration agencies.

    MrsDavieMartin believesmany

workers have been hoodwinked by the

    agencieswho had exaggerated the

    experience of applicants for money

and she nowwants to ensure that these

workers are not sent home or punished.

We can not say it is all right and just

ignore it as it would set a precedent.

But if we can comeupwith someway

of helping, such as an amnesty while

applications are sorted out, it would be

    a huge help, she says.

    MrsDavieMartin saysworkers are too

    scared to go to ImmigrationNew

    Zealand for help and expose

    themselves. She has had discussions

    with an Immigration official while

    meeting about looking after immigrants

    in the area.

The local RuralWomens group is also

lending a helping hand in looking after

new immigrants to the area as it is

difficult to find dairy farmworkers, she

    says.

    If workerswere not allowed to

continue on farms or allowed to take up

employment it would have a huge

impact on the dairy farming community

    in the area.

    It is a real worry.

    Peoplemust be really concerned,

    saysMrsDavieMartin.

    We can attractmanagers and share

    milkers inNewZealand the top end

    workers but have difficulty finding

    assistant herdmanagers andworkers,

    she says.

    ManyFilipinoswho have come to

NewZealand comehere for a better life

    and better opportunities for their

    families.

They are amazing people and have

really helped us (dairy farmers) through

a real employment shortage. They are

loyal, work hard and are so lovely.

    MrsDavieMartinwould like to see

someone, who has the legal knowledge

and experience, visit the district once a

month to talk to immigrants and help

    themwith their visa and employment

    issues.

I can givemoral support but I dont

    have the legal side, saysMrsDavie

    Martin.

She believes agencies have taken a lot

ofmoney fromFilipinos keen to come to

    NewZealand.

Theywould have had to pay the

money back before they started earning

for themselves and to bring their

families over for a better life.

They give up somuch and go through

a lot to get here. They leave their

families for a long time before they can

    afford to bring themover.

    MrsDavieMartin hopes a sensible

and practical solution could be found

    soon for everyone concerned, including

    farmers.

Everyone is supporting each other. A

heck of a lot (Filipinos) are not affected

but are still very concerned and

    supporting their friends and families,

    saysMrsDavieMartin.

    ImmigrationMinisterMichael

    Woodhouse has said hewasworking

with officials on new visa criteria to

    ensure those already here, and

unknowingly caught up in the alleged

    scam, were not unduly punished.

    This could enable affectedworkers to

    be issued temporary visaswhile their

    situation is considered.

    The creamof theWaimakariri districts

young talent took centre stage onFriday.

    Having no talent andbeing tonedeaf

    myself, I enlistedmy teenagedaughter to

provide an expert opinion on the 20

    contestants at theCentre Stage 2Teen

    Talent Contest held at theRangiora

    TownHall.

    The evening openedwith last years

    winnerNatashaBoon reappearingwith

    some impressive jazz dancemoves. Last

    years runnerupCalebLawson then

    strummedonhis guitar and sanghis own

    original song LooseChange.

    Solo drummer JacksonRoche

    performedblindfolded and set the show

offwith a bang, setting off a strongmix of

    singers,musicians anddancers.

    Mydaughters favouriteswere the

    dancers, however itwas 17yearold

    LindaNhererawho stole the showwith

    her ownoriginal song Diary ofBroken

    Heart.

    Linda said shewas speechless after

    herwinwas announced. Shewrote the

song about a year ago, while going

through adifficult time inher life and

    never dreamed itwould onedaywinher

    a talent contest.

I chose that song because its a part of

    meand Imemotionally connected to it.

No, I hadno idea Iwas going towin

I just thought Iwould get third place or

    something.

    Secondplaced JaydinShingletonwas

thrilled to get secondafter singing and

strumming on guitar a JasonMraz song I

    Wont GiveUp.While 13year oldMele

Peseta claimed third after playing her

    ukulele and singing amedley inwhatwas

    her first timeon stage.

With the singers taking the top three

places, the dancerswere left to claim the

    spot prizes,with 13yearoldHenry from

    CourtneyPearcewas recognised for

    Thenumber of 13yearolds performing

    Counting your small

    blessings important

    By THENEWSREPORTERDAVID HILL

Sometimes in life you count your

    small blessings.

Whether that be creating a silly

decorated hat for themens art class

    at the Northern (Rangiora)

    Agricultural and Pastoral Show,

    attending the Centre Stage Teen

    Talent Contest withmy teenage

    daughter or celebratingmy teenage

    daughters birthday with family over

    LabourWeekend small blessings

    are what counts in life.

Not the things you cannot control.

Just a fewweeks agomy family was

fuelled by optimism, moving into a

rental house and hopeful work would

    soon begin on rebuilding our

    Parklands, Christchurch, home.

    Hopeful our new homewould be

    ready by winter next year.

However, last week a notice came

    in the letterbox from the

    Christchurch City Council advising

sections of the street will be closed

over the next six weeks from this

week for road works the section of

the street which includes our house

will be closed for four of those six

    weeks.

Then over the weekend and I drove

past our home and saw a new sign on

    the fence Danger: Asbestos

    Removal.

When we handed over the keys to

    our insurance company and builders

at the beginning of themonth, they

said if the asbestos check (scheduled

for the next day) was positive it

would delay the demolition by three

    to four weeks.

While we have had no contact from

    our insurance company (no surprise

given our experience over the last

five years) or the builders, one

    suspects, given the asbestos removal

and the road works, that the

foundations on the new house will

not be laid until sometime next year.

Still, we should not have expected

    anything different as our neighbours

    rebuilds have all faced similar

    delays. The builders project

    managers prediction of 31 weeks

    (sevenmonths) did seem rather

    optimistic.

In recent weeks I was also asked to

write a press release for the church

we attend in NewBrighton, as a

public meeting was called to discuss

    new council regulations which could

    make the churchs redevelopment

plans (to replace the church building

    demolished in 2011) impossible.

Five years on, postquake life if

postquake is even the right word

    doesnt get any less complicated.

Oh well, thank goodness for the

    small blessings in life.

    By SHELLEY TOPP

    The North Canterbury Soroptimists

could not have wished for a better day

to hold their annual craft fair and

    market day last week.

The popular fundraiser was held at

the Rangiora A and P Showgrounds on

Tuesday, October 20, in warm, sunny,

    still weather.

With the sun out and the

temperature in the mid20s the gelato

    stall did a roaring trade.

    However, there were many other

stalls to choose from 89 altogether

    selling everything from lavender,

    tomato plants, woodwork, glassware,

    clothing, flowers, and honey, to

    tangelos, grapefruit and avocados,

    Christmas cards, toys andmuchmore.

We were very happy with the day as

    the weather was so perfect,

soroptimist Mary Harris, one of the

    organisers, said.

We had some great new stalls

which helps to keep the market day

    fresh.

    Lois Bennett andWendy McClung

had the mammoth task of organising

the stalls and did an amazing job.

    Rangiora buskers Phil Minton and

Claire Buckley added to the relaxed

    country atmosphere with their music

    during the day.

    Attendance was also up.

There was a pleasing increase in

visitors to the fair this year, with good

    numbers from Christchurch, Mary

    said.

    There were visitors from Auckland,

Nelson and Rotorua too, and the fair

    also attracted international visitors

    this year, from Scotland, Australia,

    England, and Germany.

    Mary attributed the increase in

    visitors to funding from Enterprise

    North Canterbury, which meant they

were able to advertise the event

    outsideWaimakariri.

This year the Canterbury branch of

    the Cystic Fibrosis Association of

New Zealand will benefit from funds

    raised on the day.

They will be our major recipient,

    along with other local charities,

    Mary said.

The chief executive officer of Cystic

    Fibrosis New Zealand, Belinda

Burnett, said they were humbled this

year to be chosen as funding recipient

    from the event.

There is such a lot we will be able

to do with this money, she said.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a condition

that occurs when a faulty cystic

    fibrosis transmembrane conductance

regulator gene is inherited from both

    parents.

The condition is the most common

    life threatening genetic disorder

    affecting New Zealand children, the

    Cystic Fibrosis NZ website said.

It affects a number of organs in the

    body (especially the lungs and

    pancreas) by clogging themwith thick,

    sticky mucus.

In the lungs this could cause

shortness of breath, a chronic cough

    and repeated chest infections.

    Blockages affecting the pancreas

    could cause digestion problems

leading to poor weight gain and

    malnutrition due to malabsorption,

    the website said.

However, the website also said that

if a family history of cystric fibrosis

    was known, or suspected, family

members could contact their GP to

undergo a simple test to find out if

they were carriers of the faulty gene.

    Septic tank agreement

    By SHELLEY TOPP

    TheWaimakaririDistrict Council has

    approvedacapital budget of $270,000 to

repair private septic tank faults in

    Mandevilles easterndistrict sewer

    scheme.

    Thecouncil decidedon the repairwork,

    after a failure in thewastewaternetwork

during flooding in June last year that left

    manypropertieswithout showeror toilet

    facilities forup toa fortnight.

Council decided this level of service

    wasunacceptable, even in that extreme

    event,whichwasa1in70year storm,

    coupledwith thehighest ever recorded

    groundwater level, andanalready

    saturated catchment, the council

    wastewater assetmanager,RicBarber,

    said.

    Therewere14 separate faults recorded.

    Mostwere causedbyaccess lidsnot being

    a sufficient height above finishedground

    level.

    Council doplay somepart in ensuring

that the septic tanks installedat properties

    are to our standards,when thebuilding

    inspections are carriedout, therefore it

was felt that the community and the

    wastewater schemewouldmost benefit

    fromacouncil initiative to repair the

septic tanks at highest risk of inundating

    thewastewaternetwork in a floodevent,

    he said.

The large variety of faults encountered

made it impossible todetermine the cause

    of each fault.

    Somearedue topoor installation, some

    aredue towearand tear andageof the

    private infrastructure, somearedue to the

    council updating their standards onwhat

is required for a septic tank connected to a

    council scheme, and somearedue to

    landscapingat theproperty, he said.

    For olderproperties, the standards

werenot as implicit in their detail about

    whatwas required, and theydidhave to

comply to the standardat the time. For

    newerproperties, the council has

    improved their internal processes to

ensure that the septic tanksat properties

    are inspected toensure compliancewith

the latest standards at the timeofBuilding

    Codecompliance, he said.

    TheMandeville schemes septic tanks

vary inage fromnew, in somecases, on the

    MandevilleParkandMillfield

    subdivisions, through to 1996 installation.

    Property owners shouldbear inmind

    that a septic tankhas anexpecteduseful

life of about 15 years,MrBarber said.

    Therefore, anumberof theolder

    propertiesmayneed tobudget for

replacement of their septic tank, or as a

    minimuman inspectionof the integrity of

    the tank.

    Theeasterndistrict sewer scheme is an

    amalgamationof ninediscretewastewater

schemes into one large scheme. Itwas

    amalgamated in 2007,when theOcean

    wastewater schemes in theeastern sideof

    theWaimakaririDistrict.

    Allwastewater for thesenine schemes

    (which comprise ofRangiora,Kaiapoi,

    eitherKaiapoi orWoodendwastewater

    treatmentplants, fromwhere it is pumped

    connectedon to theeasterndistrict sewer

    By SHELLEY TOPP

    TheAmerican Classic Car Club

Canterbury is gearing up for another

    big show of allAmericanmotoring

    power atWoodend on Sunday,

    November 1.

TheUSADay Car Show, will be held

    at Gladstone Park, at theWoodend

    RugbyGrounds, where therewill be a

chance to see carsmade by all the big

    names in the Americanmotoring

    industry, including Ford, Chevrolet

    (GM), Chrysler, Dodge, DeSoto,

    Plymouth and Studebaker.

It is the biggest Americanorigin car

show in the South Island, says club

    spokesmanTrevor Scott.

    Folk come from theWest Coast,

Oamaru in the south through to

Blenheim in the north. There are cars

    that you dont see around

    Christchurch,making for a great

    show.

The collective value of the cars on

showwill be in themillions of dollars

    withmany of themworthmore than

$100,000 each, and its not just a day out

    for boyswith their toys.

There are a lot of womenwho own

cars and theywill be attending, says

    Trevor.

The event began in 1996 as the clubs

    inaugural American Spring Cruise

    with 96 vehicles involved.

In 2000 it was given a name change,

    becoming the American Classic Car

    ClubMeet andEat, held atWaikuku

    Beach.

The public were invited and the

event proved a hit. However, the next

    year attendance again exceeded

    expectationswith 197 vehicles on

    show.More than six hundred sausages

were sold during the day, and the event

was a huge success for the club.

It was given a name change toUSA

Day Car Show in 2002, and by 2004 the

number of cars in the showhad

increased tomore than 250. The event

continued to grow in popularity with

close to four hundred cars at the 2006

    event, andmany being turned away

    because of lack of space.

    A decisionwasmade to change the

venue, and in 2007 themove to

    Gladstone Parkwasmadewith the

    help of theWoodendRugby Club.

The venue has proved ideal for the

    event which now regularly attracts

    between 400500 cars.

    TheAmerican Classic Car Club

    Canterburywas formed during the

    1970swithmembers owning an

    outstanding selection of American

Classic Cars ranging from the 1930s to

    the 1990s.

    Many of their vehicles are

    impeccably restored, while others

    remainworks in progress.

A big turnout, of between 450500

cars, is expected atUSADay again this

year and, as always, therewill be a

wide variety, and standard, of vehicles

    on show.

Therewill also be best in showprizes

for the top ten cars on the day, and also

    childrens entertainment, raffles, spot

prizes, food stalls and trade stalls at

    the event.

    Iconic farm utes made tough,

    reliable and ready for work

    By AMANDABOWES

Reliable . . . This 1983Mazda B2200 diesel flat deck is still going strong. PHOTO: AMANDA BOWES

In the days before themarket was

    floodedwithRVs, SUVs, RTVs and

cross overs, life, when it came to

choosing a truck or ute, was relatively

    simple.

Kiwis had their favourites. For the

farmer, the big heavy trucks of the 1940s

    to 1960swere replaced by smallermore

stream lined vehicles and the big trucks

mainly became the domain of trucking

    firms.

    The ToyotaHilux became

    synonymouswith icons like Barry

    Crump and the infamous Bugger

    advertisement on television. But its

    history goes back to 1961.

Toyota had in fact been producing

pick ups as far back as 1947, but the

Hilux began life in a line of small pick

ups named Briska in 1961made by

    the Japanese commercial vehicle

    manufacturer, HinoMotors.

In 1968 the first genuine ToyotaHilux

    hit the Japanesemarket. It was

conceived by Toyota, but still built by

    HinoMotors.

The first vehicles were short wheel

base but by 1971, the longwheel base

    was introduced.

    TheNorth Americanmarket was one

    of Toyotasmost important and the

Hiluxwas simply called a Toyota Truck

    over there.

By 1978, the third generation of

    ToyotaHilux had come about andNew

    Zealands love affair with thembegan

    in earnest.

    Farmers, plumbers, electricians and

    builders all found favourwith themas

    well as theMazdaB series which

became popular in the early 1970s.

In 1978, buyers could purchase a

model that had Toyota embossed on the

tail gate, which became a bit of a status

    symbol.

    The first fourwheel driveHilux came

out in 1979 and in 1981 the first SUVs

    were produced.

1984 saw the development of the Surf

and 4Runner in response to theFord

    Bronco andNissan Pathfinder and

    suddenlyKiwis were offered some

    competition in the SUVmarket.

Another favourite light pick up in

    NewZealand, was theMazdaB series of

utes. These also started to bemade in

1961. The size of the engine determined

the name, so theB1600 had a 1.6 litre

engine, the B2000 had a 2.0 litre engine

    and so on.

Mazda called its compact pick ups

    "Proceed" in Japan, "Bounty" inNew

Zealand and "Drifter" in South Africa.

    WhenFord partneredwithMazda,

    the same vehicles were calledFord

    Courier and later onRanger. InNew

    Zealand andAustralia, the Ford

Courier was built for Ford, byMazda in

    Japan. InNewZealand, vehicles were

    assembled locally andmost cities had

    assembly plants, as Japanese imports

began to arrive in the country, assembly

    plants were gradually shut down.

    Mazdawellsides oftenmorphed into

    flat deckswhen thewellside rusted out

    andmany farms still have oldMazda

utes parked up under trees that still

    run.

In the days before the largermodels

of Toyotas came on the scene, both the

    earlyHilux and theMazdaB series

were a popular choice on farms and

many doubled as farm vehicle and a

    town vehicle for getting supplies.

    Bothmakes have left an indelible

    imprint onKiwi culture and showno

signs of sales slowing up, with last year

one of the biggest years for newute

sales ever up by around 4,000 on 2013.
