THE NEWSLETTER OF HAMPTON LUCY, CHARLECOTE AND LOXLEY PARISHES
Issue No: 190 June 2017

National Open Farms Day 2017 On Sunday, 11 June, Valefresco will once again be opening the farm as part of Open Farm Sunday www.farmsunday.org. If you buy prepared salads from a UK supermarket in the summer, there is a good chance that
some of the leaf in the bag will have been grown at Old Pastures Farm, Hampton Lucy. The farm will be open to the public from 2.00pm to 5.00pm - just follow the signs. We shall have tractor and trailer rides around the farm and, weather permitting, there will be a working demonstration of machinery. We’ll have a
bouncy castle for the kids, and a BBQ for everybody. Dig out some suitable footwear, put on your sun cream (hopefully…!) and come and visit us. We look forward to welcoming you. IH
Loxley School Rev David Jessett joined us each afternoon in the week leading up to the end of term to tell the Easter story, with the help of the children and by using props and drama. The children waved their palm crosses and acted out the Last Supper. They also took part in a re-enactment of the crucifixion of Christ. The children in Class 1 visited Coventry Cathedral in Easter week to explore the Easter story. MO
Compton Verney Museum and Art Gallery Seurat to Riley: The Art of Perception.
Compton Verney’s summer season opens with one of the first exhibitions of its kind in the UK. Seurat to Riley: The Art of Perception joins the dots between Georges Seurat’s pointillist paintings and the psychedelic genius of Bridget Riley in a wide-ranging celebration of Op Art. From the Impressionists onwards, artists have been inspired by historical and contemporary colour theories - most famously seen in the pointillist work of Georges Seurat and his associates, where colours other than those actually painted on the canvas are generated in the eye of the beholder. This exhibition explores one of the most exciting threads running through the art history of the past 150 years: the ways in which the viewer’s visual perceptions, themselves dependent on the close interaction of eye and brain, are used in art. It will feature ninety works ranging from painting, sculpture, light-based prints and drawings from public and private collections across the UK, plus exciting new commissions created especially for the exhibition. The exhibition runs from 8 July to 1 October. TJ
Hampton Lucy C of E Primary School and Nursery On Wednesday, 3 May, Hampton Lucy was visited by two Olympians, Richard Buck and Mandip Sehmi. Richard Buck was a member of the 4 × 400 metre relay team at the 2012 London Olympics and Mandip Sehmi was a member of the wheelchair rugby squad at the 2008 Beijing and
2012 London Paralympic Games. The Olympians spent the day in school, talking to the children about what inspired them to get into sport and the benefits of adopting a healthy lifestyle. They worked with each class on various training drills and finished the day with relay races and a version of wheelchair rugby. SA

News from the Parishes A complete list of church services, including those at Barford, Wasperton and
Sherbourne, is displayed on the notice board in your church.
Dear Friends,
This letter will come to you shortly before the General Election. Therefore, I thought you might be interested – partly as a change from having my own thoughts – to see some extracts from a Pastoral letter that the Archbishops of Canterbury and York wrote to all the clergy and Readers of the Church of England at the beginning of May.
“Our first obligation as Christians is to pray for those standing for office, and to continue to pray for those who are elected.” “Our second obligation as Christians at these times is to set aside apathy and cynicism and to participate, and encourage others to do the same.” “The Christian virtues of love, trust and hope should guide and judge our actions, as well as the actions and policies of all those who are seeking election to the House of Commons and to lead our country.” “If our shared British values are to carry the weight of where we now stand and the challenges ahead of us, they must have at their core cohesion, courage and stability.”

I have underlined key words which they go on expand. I cannot include it all here but if you would like to see in full, please email me. However, as they talk about each of those qualities it seemed to me that they were wanting to draw us back to a time which was characterised by more ‘fairness’ in our country and world; a time when there were not such extremes of wealth and poverty, of power and powerlessness, as exist now both nationally and internationally - pointing out that reducing those differences is good for our society and world as a whole. They conclude:
“These deep virtues and practices – love, trust and hope, cohesion, courage and stability - are not the preserve of any one political party or worldview, but go to the heart of who we are as a country in all of its diversity. An election campaign, a Parliament and a Government that hold to these virtues, gives us a firm foundation on which to live well together for the common good.”

Barn Service The Mid-Fosse Parishes would like to invite you to their informal, family-friendly Barn Service which will be held at Chesterton Fields Farm, CV33 9JY, on Sunday, 18 June at 10.30am. It will be a celebration of rural community life, and is one of a series of nationwide events bringing communities together. It will be part of the Great Get Together in memory of Jo Cox, MP. For more information, contact [email protected] RS

Parish Partner’s Report The cathedral shop is being relocated to the base of the tower in the old cathedral ruins, from where staff will also be selling tickets for concerts and visits to the tower. The Tourist Information Bureau will move from the tower to the nearby Herbert Art Gallery. The old shop premises will be used by St Claire’s at the Cathedral for group studies, part of the community life of the church. The next meeting for Parish Partners will be held on Saturday, 15 July, in the newly restored Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, Stoneleigh. DH
Loxley Church Concert The next concert will be at St. Nicholas’ Church, Loxley, on Sunday, 25 June, at 3.00pm featuring Opera Warwick - a student-run University of Warwick society dedicated to the appreciation and production of high quality opera. Their aim is to bring opera into the 21st Century, making it more accessible and inspiring opera novices to give it a go. They have recently had a great success with their English language version of Die Fledermaus in the Warwick Arts Centre and are currently rehearsing The Pirates of Penzance, which will be staged in June. They put on a wonderful recital at Loxley Church last year and are returning with a new programme of their favourite solo, duo and group pieces designed to bring a smile to any music lover's face. The concert will last for 60 minutes. Admission is free, with a retiring collection in aid of the Church Fabric Fund. DW
Congratulations Rachel and Alycia Congratulations to both Rev’d Rachel Saum, Curate in the Lighthorne Benefice and leader of the Field Community at Charlecote Vicarage, who will be ordained priest at Coventry Cathedral on Sunday, 2 July at 10.30am, and to Alycia Timmis of Barford who will be ordained Deacon at 4.00pm in the Cathedral on the same day and will become Curate of St Mary’s, Warwick. We pray for both of them and for Alycia’s husband and son, Mark and Miles. Rev’d DJ
Hampton Lucy and Charlecote WI Our May meeting saw us back in Charlecote Village Hall for the summer months. The main agenda item was NFWI Resolutions. Two were discussed:
• To raise awareness of causes and impacts of loneliness and to work with health and social workers in the community to help with the problem.
• The issue of micro-plastic fibres which are shed from synthetic clothing with every wash and are the cause of micro-plastic contamination of the oceans. The NFWI calls on the government and industry to fund research aimed at eliminating this problem. These resolutions were passed and will be discussed and voted on at national level at the Annual National Meeting in June in Liverpool. The next meeting will be in Charlecote Village Hall on Wednesday, 7 June, at 7.30pm when the speaker will be Karen Van Hoffman talking on Exquisite Needlework With Fine Silver Wire. In addition to the usual meeting on 5 July, a Carousel Supper is being planned for Saturday, 22 July. MJW
News from Charlecote Park The does will be dropping their fawns this month and there are still a few places for the Deer at Dawn walks on 15 and 21 June (we say “dawn” but they start at 6.30am!). These out-of-hours events are always a very special experience but if you’re less of a lark and more of a night-owl you might enjoy the evening Bat Walks on 3 June, 7 July and 4 August. The Warwickshire Bat Group will be bringing along their specialist equipment so you will be able to hear these delightful creatures and find out more about them. Any families working through 50 Things to Do before you’re 11¾ will be able to tick off the Go on a Nature Walk at Night with this one. Take care if you’re walking your dog along the route near the lake as the swans can get very protective when they have young cygnets. Our new plant centre is only open during afternoons until we can get some more staff in place. We know we can’t replicate the professionalism of the former privately-run centre and the owners’ years of experience, but we hope you’ll pop in to browse. All of our plants are grown peat-free and we stock the full National Trust gardening range with lots of lovely pots too. Every sale directly helps to fund our work at Charlecote. If you’d like to donate any second-hand books to our bookshop we’d be very grateful - again every penny from the bookshop stays at Charlecote to help us preserve the books in our library which are prone to mould due to the close proximity to the river. Please drop in any donations you have to Visitor Reception - and thank you. MG
Carers4Carers Group Carers4Carers will be meeting in Kineton Village Hall on Friday, 23 June, 10.30am to 12 noon. Come and relax with a coffee and a chat. Kate, an occupational therapist, will be talking about aids, adaptations and independent living. We can look after your loved one in our Companionship Group while you attend the meeting but please request this in advance. For more details, including help with transport, phone Gillian on 01926 640203/07947 893504. LM
Wellesbourne & District Lions Club On Sunday, 4 June, the Lions are hosting a new event for Wellesbourne, ‘A Classic Gathering’ on the Sports Field, Loxley Close. The event opens at 12 noon and runs until 4.00pm. There will be classic cars, traction engines, vintage bikes, displays, refreshments and lots more to see and do. Please come along to this free event which is suitable for all ages. We are getting closer to our big event of the year, which we jointly host with Shakespeare Lions, the Annual Raft Race from Wasperton to Stratford. This will take place on Sunday, 23 July. Our main beneficiary will be Riding for the Disabled, (RDA), based in Warwick. Our target is to raise over £10,000 to help to fund items to be used in a new Centre of Excellence to be constructed in Shrewley. If you would like to enter a team in the race, please visit our dedicated website - raftrace.org.uk - which will give you all the information needed. I am pleased to announce that just over £1000 was raised with our giant Easter Eggs, which were placed in local pubs, restaurants and businesses in the district. The Lions would like to say a big “thank you” to all of the participating businesses and to everyone who bought a ticket, helping us to raise such an impressive sum. On Saturday, 6 May, we held a fun-filled evening of Lion Racing at Barford Memorial Hall to raise money towards the rebuilding of Barford Youth and Community Centre. The hall was packed and, along with the racing, people thoroughly enjoyed a meal of lasagne and a selection of desserts. AS
