Pre-registration for the Show – Karen Steward Why should you pre-register your plants? Because your plant tags will be waiting for you on Thursday morning when you get to the Show. It’s that simple. If you don’t pre-register, I can’t tell you how long a wait you’ll have for your tags. That depends on how many other people didn’t pre-register and how many tags I need to type and print. You know I’ll do the best I can, but it might be a while. How many plants should you pre-register? All of the plants that you might end up bringing. Really. It is so much easier for me to delete tags than to type and print them on Thursday that I really would prefer that you pre-register anything that even has a chance of ending up at the Show. After your plants are tagged, just bring back the tags you won’t be using and I’ll delete them. Of course, you can still add plants on Thursday, but that puts you in the waiting line. How late can you pre-register? Well, I’m not planning to stay up until midnight on Wednesday working on tags, because I’ll have to get my act together early on Thursday to meet y’all there. I don’t want to list a specific cut-off time, so put it this way -- the later you send the forms, the more chance that you’ll be in the waiting line in the morning. Go ahead and send files as early as Monday, if you like, and I’ll get started. Remember that you’ll be sending entries to Marc and he’ll be forwarding to me, so there might be a little lag time. I’m sure he’ll be just a bit busy that week. Why should you use the digital forms? That’s the fastest and most accurate way to get your information to me. If the forms are typed, your tag might actually match what you thought you wrote. Don’t assume that I’ll be able to read your handwriting or that I actually know how some of these names should be spelled. Again, I’ll do the best I can, but there will probably be a couple hundred plants to type up.

The club show officers request that plants be pre-registered by Wednesday, February 22nd. See page 2 for an important message about plant pre-registration.

Preparing the “Club” Display - All-Hands-On-Deck! Maryanne Laukaitis

Set-up of our society display will be Thursday, Feb 23, 2017, beginning mid to late morning. We need volunteers to unload the sawhorses, panels, etc. from the truck. If you feel up to this more strenuous part of the job, please join in. If you can't do heavy lifting, then we still have draping, and decorating which takes a little creativity...and it's fun too! We'll have the terrarium, introduced in 2016, which needs delicate attention, arranging plants inside and careful ID la-beling of plants.

Please lend attractive natural materials such as oddly shaped wood, to accent the display. Cut greenery, such as ivy and other evergreens, are useful too. Bring items which are easily hand carried (without a forklift!) We also can use plain green house plants (not in bloom) in nice condition for filler. A Norfolk Island Pine is always welcome. Empty pots, crates and buckets are appreciated as pedestals for show plants too. Please label all materials with your name on the back or underside!

We hope you'll join in the set-up - it's fun- Bring your creativity!

Plant Delivery

Final deadline for plant delivery for judging is 4:00 PM, Thursday Feb 23, 2017 at Smith Vocational High School in Northampton, MA. The vendor’s deadline for plant delivery and setup is 6:30 PM.

Club members who cannot drop off plants during this window can make arrangements to drop them off with Marc Gray in Vermont, and Karen Steward in Montague. Please contact them by February 6th if you wish to drop off plants with them. Contact Marc Gray if you have questions regarding registering your plants.

Meeting Roger West

A very large crowd was present for this pre-show meeting. Is this a good omen for things to come? Joe and Marc talked about the upcoming show, emphasis on more volunteer help. Last year, the Saturday AM time slot needed more help, so let’s try to remedy this. I’m sure a show time table will be in this newsletter somewhere. I would like to plead for more help taking and bringing back all that stuff at Munson library. Marge and I will meet at Munson around 9:30 AM on the Wednesday of the show.

Alex and Holly brought up an idea about UV light in photographing orchids from the pollinators view point. Years ago Bill Hutchinson presented a slide show on UV photos of orchids. It was shockingly different. This would make an excellent educational exhibit for the show, the contrast of an orchid as how we see it and how an insect sees the same orchid. You could have side by side photos. It seems like a simple thing to set up but I have no clue about UV photography. Some club member must know. Sounds like a project for next year’s show. This would be better than empty floor space. I have to congratulate Alex and Holly for bringing in a blooming miltoniopsis that was not a re-cent purchase. The rest of the show table had some nice phals that I hope will make our show. Lastly, volunteer and bring in all your blooming orchids.

In Memory

Wendell Davis "Wendy" Jackman 87, of Main St., died Tuesday Jan. 17 in UMASS Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. He leaves his wife of 66 years, Marion B. (Ballou) Jackman, his son Brian, and two granddaughters.

Wendy was an inside sales manager at Kadant Web Systems in Auburn, before retiring in 1996. Born in Worcester, he was the son of William G. and Adelaide L. (Moffatt) Jackman and graduated from Worcester Boys Trade School and attended Boston Univ. and Worcester Junior College. Wendy believed in health and fitness and was a skier and an avid runner entering many relay races and marathons. He was a member of Christ the Rock Fellowship Church, formerly First Alliance Church, for 82 years where he was involved in the choir and served as a long time elder.

He was an active orchid grower, and enjoyed what he could grow successfully on windowsills. He and Marion have been members of the Amherst Orchid Society since 2001. He was always willing to help anyone who needed help. He was quiet, level headed and never said a mean thing about anyone.

A Plea From Your Editor

This is a call for articles from your friendly neighborhood newsletter editor. If you'd like to see more than blank space here, please think of something you'd like to read. If you have growing tips, you can include them. If you have an interesting story about seeing orchids on a vacation, share it! Did you go to an American Orchid Society meeting or festival? Write about it! Write about how you started growing orchids in the first place. Any articles in the news-letter are fantastic. If anyone wants to write up something about the November re-potting clinic that would be amaz-ing! I know there were bribes being handed out the other month, but I'd like to make the request on a more personal note: I've started growing orchids (damn the peer pressure) and the knowledge I've gained from the newsletter over the years has helped them not yet die. Therefore, the more articles we can produce for the newsletter, the better chance my orchids have at survival. I'm totally selfish that way. It's all about my own personal use and entertainment. I mean, it's bad enough that the orchid collection illness has already taken hold, and I have not only one orchid, but four--how am I expected to keep them alive if you orchid masters don't tell me how?
