First Bassman: Seaton Swings Waco, Temple...This year's CTJS Jazz Parties were propelled by mas-ter bassist Lynn Seaton. Seaton played Friday, May 4, at Waco's Barron’s on 5th, and Saturday, May 5, at Temple's In The Mood Ballroom. Seaton, a member of the jazz faculty at the University of North Texas who has anchored such groups as the Woody Herman Orchestra, the Count Basie Orchestra, and the trio of pianist Monty Alexander, was joined by members of the Temple Jazz Orchestra. The CTJS-sponsored event provided funds for CTJS jazz scholarship pro-grams in Temple and Waco respectively. CTJS's versa-tile secretary/historian, Jim Burns, captured the event with his camera....

(see article and Jazzshots photostory starting on Page 2), and other events such as CTJS's annual Gala, en-ables CTJS to continue its support of jazz events like the Seaton concerts and the Temple College Jazz Fes-tival. Carpenter Foundation grant funds also provide crucial support for scholarships for aspiring middle and high school jazz students in the upcoming year.

The CTJS Board of Directors will hold its annual retreat in mid-September, and President Simonette indicates that planning for the allocation of these funds will be one of the major tasks of the meeting.

The E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation was established in 1975 by Rhodes Carpenter, a Rich-mond, VA., businessman who founded the Carpenter Company to manufacture and distribute polyurethane products such as mattresses and pillows. The firm operates a large plant in Temple. Carpenter and later his wife, Leona, donated the majority of their estates to the foundation, which has, among its goals, pledged to support public charities in communities where Carpen-ter Co. has had longtime manufacturing facilities.

The CTJS is honored to again receive this major grant from the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation.
