"This is the third grant that CTJS has received from Carpenter since our beginning in the fall of 2007, " said Simonette. "The funds from this grant will be applied to the preservation and promotion of our country’s rich jazz heritage and, more specifically, to our planned activities, which address educational programs, jazz perfor- mances and community partnerships with particular emphasis on ensuring access to cultural educational opportu- nities for young people from all walks of life. We are delighted to share this news with our members." The combination of the Carpenter Foundation grant, along with the profits from the Bill Watrous concerts (see article and Jazzshots photostory starting on Page 2), will allow CTJS to continue to support jazz events like the Watrous concerts and to continue funding scholarships for aspiring middle and high school jazz students in the upcoming year. The CTJS Board of Directors will hold its annual retreat in mid-August, and planning for the allocation of these funds will be the primary focus of the meetings. Scott and White Funds Fuel Watrous Gigs

Bill Watrous (r), with Tom Fairlie and drummer Josh Spurling.

CTJS officers and board are pleased to report that Scott & White donated $2,500 as sponsor of the Central Texas Jazz Society and Temple College First Annual Jazz Party.

Two parties were held, one on May 6 in Waco, the second the following day in Temple. Both featured legendary trombonist Bill Watrous backed by area jazz musi-cians. Funds raised by these two concerts were directed toward the CTJS jazz schol-arship programs in Temple and Waco.

In addition to the major support provided by Scott and White, the Waco performance benefited from the sponsorship of Waco's Backstage Pass Music Center and the Greater Waco Council for the Arts.

The two jazz parties differed from Bill's previous area appearances by

featuring him with a small combo in a relaxed, almost jam-session-like context. (Bill has played and recorded on several occasions with the Temple Jazz Orchestra and Temple College Jazz Ensemble).

The Friday ses-sion was held at Barron's on 5th (one of Waco's historic houses), while the Tem-ple bash took place at the In The Mood ball-room, provided free-of-charge by CTJS Board Member Karen Gonzales. (See the Jazzshots

photostories on pages 3 and 4 for more details).

"We received a lot of positive feedback on Bill's performance,” said board member Evan Klaras, who, along with board member Greg Bashara, was largely re-sponsible for pulling together the

Waco event and also played with the combo. "We were especially pleased with the excellent crowd size, since most attendees bought tickets at the door.” "It was a wonderful musical experience for everyone,” said CTJS artistic direc-tor Tom Fairlie.

The CTJS board of directors hopes to plan similar events for the upcoming year at the retreat this August.

Wild Night in LACentex Jazz News editor Dave

Wild will play Vitello's in north Los Angeles during a brief fam-ily visit next month. The 8/4 Wild Brothers gig at the LA jazz club will feature Dave (piano), Ken Wild (bass) plus saxophonist Eric Marienthal and drummer Ray Brinker.

Dave, Ken and Eric last played together when Marienthal was the guest artist with the Temple Jazz Orchestra at the 2004 TC Jazz Festival (and Ken, a clinician that year, subbed on bass with TJO).

CTAD website open for businessThe new Central Texas

Arts District website, www.centraltexasartsdis-trict.org, is now online.

In 2010 CTJS joined with a group of seven other arts organizations in Temple to fund the creation of the website. The site is designed to function as a single point of access for Central Texans to discover imaginative, creative endeavors that provide cultural

benefits for the community. The website is a virtual arts

district, and its centerpiece is the events Arts District Calendar. The Arts District Calendar shows a detailed and thorough list of the

events going on in the area and provides the viewer a description, time, day and contact information to facilitate making arrange-ments to attend.

Central Texas Arts Dis-trict intends to create a

content-rich website, member-driven and with a minimum of 50 members by year’s end.

CTJS invites you to check out www.centraltexasartsdistrict.org.

The E. Rhodes and Leona B. Car-penter Foundation was established in 1975 by Rhodes Carpenter, a Richmond, VA., businessman who founded the Carpenter Co., a firm that manufacturers and distributes polyurethane products such as mat-tresses and pillows. The firm oper-ates a large plant in Temple.

Carpenter and later his wife, Leona, donated the majority of their estates to the foundation, which has, among its goals, pledged to sup-port public charities in communities where Carpenter Co. has had long-time manufacturing facilities.

The CTJS is honored to be the re-cipient of a grant from this forward-thinking organization.

Carpenter Grant(continued from Page 1) CTJS has set Saturday, Sept. 24,

as its third annual fall gala.

As with the earlier galas, the 2011 event will unfold at the In The Mood ballroom at 13 S. Main St. in downtown Temple. Although details are still pending,

CTJS anticipates that music will

again be provided by The Temple High School Highlighters jazz ensemble and the CTJS Little Big Band. The two groups will explore the classic styles of Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey and other greats of the big band era."As with previous galas, our

main objective is to raise funds to provide scholarships to qualified middle- and high-school-age students to further their study of jazz music,” said CTJS Board Member Jim Burns, in charge of the gala project. Ticket prices for the event will

again be $15. More details on the event will appear in the next issue of the Central Texas Jazz Society newsletter.

young jazz musicians and co-sponsor various Central Texas jazz performances requires operating capital of between $12,000 to $15,000 annually.

"We've been able to raise those amounts through members’ dues, annual fundraising events, corporate sponsors and grants,” said Simonette. “Funding from grants from the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation and corporate sponsorship by Scott and White, which we have had the good fortune of receiving, have been major factors in fulfilling the CTJS mission.” Since there are no guarantees that CTJS will be able to receive requested grant monies each year, the soci-ety has started a comprehensive individual and com-pany sponsorship fundraising program. Sponsors help preserve this American art form by helping to educate young people in the community. In return:• All sponsors receive recognition in printed programs for concerts and events sponsored by the CTJS; • The sponsor’s company logo is displayed on our website and also advertised in our bi-monthly newsletter; • A sponsorship will help provide scholarships to qualified middle and high school age students to further their study of jazz music; with a special focus on financially challenged students.
