DIARY
Once again we ask all organisers of events in Kemnay & District to give details for publication in the newsletter. It is much better if events do not clash, for in a small community such as ours, these clashes can result in divided loyalties and maybe a lower financial return for those who are raising funds for charity or their clubs expenditure.

PETRIE FAMILY
The wall mounted memorial round the corner from the Findlater memorial (November 2017) commemorates members of the Petrie family.
Andrew Petrie was born in Kennethmont and served his apprenticeship with James Howie, merchant in Huntly. Soon after completing his apprenticeship he moved to Aberdeen and it was not long before he set up on his own account as a grocer in the Green.
In 1876 he moved to Kemnay and commenced business as a general merchant in premises which were to become the nucleus of the Burnett Arms Hotel. In 1888 he moved to custom built premises on the corner of High Street and Station Road from where he carried on as a general merchant comprising; grocery, ironmongery, house furnishing, hardware, drapery, gent’s outfitting as well as an agency for the Town and County Bank.
The shop had a two door frontage to High Street with the entrance to the bank office on the corner. The window in the photo showing the hats is the present day window of the Music Shop.
The business prospered and Andrew Petrie was joined in the business by three of his sons. The store in Monymusk was taken on and run in conjunction with the Kemnay business.
Mr Petrie took a keen interest in
local affairs, being for many years a member of the School Board and the Parish Council. He was secretary of the Kemnay Hall Company for nearly twenty five years and precentor (leader of praise) in the Free Church for a similar period.
Andrew Petrie died on 4th April 1908 aged 70 years, his widow, Annie Kemp, died on 12th July 1933 aged 84 years.

1st Kemnay Guides are an active unit enjoying a programme of activities at their weekly meetings throughout the year. The autumn term began with planning for a
fundraising evening for Fyvie House. This resulted in a Beetle Drive with stalls including homebakes, juice, bric a brac, guess the number of sweets and handmade crafts. Everyone had a fun evening and £147 was raised. Susan, one of the Guide Guiders got married at the end of October and to celebrate the occasion we held a Hen Party. Pyjamas were worn, games played and sparkling juice and chocolate brownies enjoyed! Recent meetings have been based around a science theme with activities including sizzling sherbet, making tornados, finger and lip prints and astronomy. A visit to Dundee Science Centre gave the girls an opportunity to interact with the scientific exhibits. The 3D printer was a hit. The visit was kindly supported by Co-Op Community Funding. The final words are given over to the Guides themselves with quotes such as:
Guides are great because of all the different fun
experiences.
I enjoy Guides because we go on trips and camps.
Guides are fun because we meet new people
 Girls should join!
Girlguiding within Kemnay has lots of different opportunities, and if you
would like to come and join in the fun, this can be as a leader or helper, or
a member, please get in touch with us, please go to www.girlguiding.org.uk/interested to register your interest. You can
also email [email protected] for further information.

Just in Case…… As we head into autumn and winter it’s a good idea to make sure we’re prepared
for anything the weather might throw at us.
So, here is a reminder of a few things we could all do:
Keep a list of emergency numbers close at hand – See below Note this link to Kemnay’s Community Resilience Plan which contains further
useful information - http://www.kemnay.info
Put together an emergency pack (e.g. basic first aid items, bottled water,
energy bars, light sticks, torch, batteries, wind-up radio, hand gel/wet wipes
– See also the Scottish Flood Forum Household Plan, link on Kemnay Community Resilience Plan webpage

Christmas Card Deliveries in Kemnay
It’s almost that time of year again! The festive season rushing
towards us and it’s time for us to start preparing for delivering
Christmas cards again to friends and family in Kemnay
Village. As in the last few years, Kemnay Scout Group
would like to help you get your local Christmas cards
delivered. This year we will be putting out the collection
boxes on Saturday 2nd December hopefully to the same
collection points as last time – the two Co-ops, Chemist,
Church Centre, Littlewood Court and hopefully McColls.
The first delivery will be on Saturday 9th December followed
by two other deliveries on 16th and 23rd December. Please
note that the final collection from the boxes will be on 22nd
December just after lunch time. This gives us enough time to
get those final cards sorted and stamped for the delivery on the
Saturday morning.
May we suggest a small donation of 25p per card that you
drop in the boxes. (A second class stamp is now 55p, so that
represents very good value for money). We very much
appreciate the support of the local community in helping us
raise valued funds from this venture. Let us help you get your
cards delivered to friends and family in the village and you can
help us maintain a valued youth group in the village.
Many thanks and may we offer you best wishes for the festive
season when it comes. Please address cards correctly and
please – cards for delivery in Kemnay Village only. You
would be surprised at some of the addresses we have had in
the past!
Yours in Scouting
Phil Simons, Chairman Kemnay Scout Group
