The Crown November 2011 Golf Rounds I t seems we lost a little bit of ground on October 2010 but, we are still 778 rounds up on last year’s rounds. I still believe we can push this up past the 1000 round mark again. In November we are hosting the final Majors for the year and believe the members will support these days. Golf RoundsIt seems we lost a little bit of ground on October 2010 but, we are still 778 rounds up on last year’s rounds. I still

believe we can push this up past the 1000 round mark again. In November we are hosting the final Majors for the year and believe the members will support these days. Also, the last two Mixed Opens will be hosted in November, one on the 6th and the Christmas Mixed on the 27th of November. Please contact Queenie Liebenberg to secure your bookings.

Enlarging The Putting GreenThis is a preview of what the putting green looks like at this moment.

All members and visitors would have seen the construction happening on the driving range. This has been a huge undertaking to improve the practice facilities at the Golf Club. I would like to thank Johan Buitendag and Richard Andriessen for this development. I believe this facility is going to be a massive draw card for the Golf Club.

Handicap Link In The Pro Shop Is Active

I am happy to announce the link between the pro shop and the

handicap terminal is now up and running. This means that every golfer with a Green Titleist handicap card will have his/her round automatically opened when it is swiped in the Pro shop. Please remember that the 72 hour rule will now be strictly enforced by the National Handicap Association. If you don’t enter your score within 72

hours, a penalty round will be recorded as per the South African Golf Handicapping System For Men And Women – Version 004 01/11/2011.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS RULING IS FOR BOTH 9-HOLE AND 18 HOLE SCORES!!!!!!!“8.5 Time limit on entering scores.”“A score should be returned within 72 hours of the completion of the

round. The period of 72 hours is taken from 19:00 on the day of play to 19:00 three days later. Scores not returned during this period will result in a penalty score, computed as per section 8.6, being entered on the player’s behalf. Such scores are not to be deleted or modified by the player’s home club, unless exceptional circumstances warrant such action.”

SMS Is Back On Saturday MorningsAfter a lengthy sabbatical from our Saturday morning golf, Matt Thompson and Dean O’ Connor have rejuve-

nated the SMS competition. We would like to remind our Saturday morning golfers that the SMS is back on again. The 5th of November will be the second time the SMS will be played again and we ask our members for their support.

To all our members that celebrated Diwali on the 26th of October, we trust you had a fantastic time.Diwali

Challenge Tour (International Golf Tournament)

Once again we hosted a fan-tastic event with these up

and coming golfers. On day one, only two players managed sub-par rounds, Wayne Stroebel and Barend ‘Boesman’ Wessels. Both finished 1 under par. Day two was never going to be an easy round for the golfers, but Daniel Hammond ended up shooting a fantastic 4-under 68. He was joined by Gregg Petzer and Nathan Waghorn who both shot 1-under

71s. Day three was probably the greatest display of golf that has been played in a while. Thomas Lovett shot a magnificent 8-under par 64, James du Plessis who would end up winning the tournament shot a 5-under 67, followed by Alex van Heerden with a 4-under 68. Day four was obviously ‘pay day’. Someplayers only wanted to secure their positions, but two players were adamant to improve on their rankings. Gregg Petzer and Barend ‘Boesman’ Wessels were

the only two players to take on the competition shooting 2-under and 3-under respectively. Alas, at the end of the day there could only be on winner. James du Plessis brought it home with the following rounds, 75, 72, 67, 72, the only player to finish under par after four days of tough competition. Second was Alex van Heerden on +1, followed by Beyers Smith and Daniel Hammond on +2. We look forward to hosting these golfers again next year.

President Cup

The Fatherhood Foundation

The Fatherhood Foundation’s 2nd golf day was hosted on Sunday the 30th of November. This

foundation is run by famous actor Zane Meas, better known as “Mr Meintjies” from 7de laan. The foundation focuses on the role of the father

within the household/family, especially fathers that are incarcerated. I would again like to thank Glenn de Allende and Glean Eagle for making this day such a success.

I would like to remind the members about the date for the President’s Cup. This competitions’ format will be Betterball Stableford, so select your partners carefully.

The President’s Cup will be played on the 19th of November. We look forward to see you all there!!!!!

The Johnny Walker GhostThe origins of this trophy goes back tho when two highly respected members,

Mickey Shartin and Eddy Simons played at Zwartkops a half century ago. Zwart-kops owned a Johnny Walker statuette that was rare and which they were very proud of. Quite inexplicably the statuette found it’s way into Mickey’s car and when the Zwartkops secretary phoned requesting it’s return Mickey said they would have to play for it. Thus another tradition was born. On the 27th of June 1948 Crown Mines first teamed up against Zwartkops Country Club and won the inaugural Johnny Walker Trophy.

Over the years the competition has been hard fought with both clubs having their share of the rewards. To the losers go the honour of keeping the pale white ‘Ghost’, a replica of the original. Part of the tradition involves the partaking of early morning whisky and milk, not for the faint hearted. The camaraderie in the pub after the game is great but the true stories of what happens in the after match celebrations is something the fellows keep to themselves until they next meet when the stories of the past years are retold to thunderous laughter.

CROWN MINES GOLF CLUB IS PROUD TO HOST THE ‘GHOST’ ON THE 13TH OF NOVEMBER 2011.The following members have been selected to defend the ‘GHOST’title against Zwartkops.

Charlie Wilkins & Mike vd Walt, Frank Booth & Colin Briggs, Kovin Govender & Sybrand de Waal, Tony van Zyl & Vassie Naidoo, Cecil Els & Jeff Goutier, Daan Prinsloo & “Essie” Esterhuizen, Carl Fleischmann & Cliffy Harper, Conrad Engelbrecht & Tony Ribeiro, Marco Cristofoli & Eddie Olver as well as Terry Joseph & “The Mouth”.

During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces around the world. The aim of which is

to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men.

On Movember 1st, guys register at Movember.com with a clean-shaven face and then for the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men, known as Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Movember Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo-growing efforts.

Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November and through their actions and words raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.

At the end of the month, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas celebrate their gallantry and valor by either throwing their own Movember party or attending one of the infamous Gala Partés held around the world by Movember, for Movember

The Movember Effect: Awareness & Education, Survivorship, ResearchThe funds raised in South Africa support the number one and two male specific cancers - prostate and testicular cancer. The funds raised are directed to programs run directly by Movember and our men’s health partner, the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA). Together, these channels work together to ensure that Movember funds are supporting a broad range of innovative, world-class programs in line with our strategic goals in the areas of awareness and education, survivorship and re-search.

The Currie Cup Final and Kings Of LeonSaturday the 29th of October turned out to be a fantastic day at Crown Mines. Kings of Leon performed at the FNB Stadium, so we had a lot of guests that came to enjoy the rugby before they moved over to the stadium. Well done to Muffin and his team making it through the day with an onslaught of orders, and catering for the wedding that was hosted on the same day. Well, the RUGBY. Our hearts go out to all the Sharks supporters; we hope the scars will heal soon. To all our members and visitors that contributed to the vibe on Saturday, thank you very much!!!

Dalmondeor Primary School Golf Day 12 NovemberTo all our members; the annual Dalmondeor Primary School Golf day will once again be hosted at Crown Mines on Saturday the 12th of November. Once again this golf day will consist of two prize giving’s, one for the morning field and one for the afternoon field. Please ensure to book your times for this day as not to miss out.

Rest in peace dear friend.

It is with a heavy heart that I have to announce the death of one of our members. Dr Ishwerlal “Whites” Vithal passed away on Tuesday morning the 1st of November after he suffered a massive stroke. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. “Whites” was a member of Crown Mines for over 22 years. His three games a week will be dearly missed.

Pat Magee has decided to join his family in Australia (of all places) and will be leaving SA within the next week. I have had the privilege of meeting a true gen-tlemen and I am sure a lot of members will have fond memories of Pat as he has been a member of Crown Mines for just over 30 years. Pat did pop in for a last drink on Saturday the 5th of November to say good bye to some of his old friends. For those who were not present, Pat asked me to convey his best wishes to all. We wish you all the happiness as you join your family in Australia.

Bon Voyage
