Special Olympics special for everyoneAbout 250 athletes representing just
about every school in Floyd County gathered at Barron Stadium on a recent morning to compete in the Special Olympics, and every single one of them left a winner.
“Special Olympics is so important because every gets to come out and participate in two events,” said Tammy Bryant, special populations coordina-tor for the Rome-Floyd Parks & Recre-ation Authority.
Bryant said that every person gets either a first, second, or third place ribbon for each event that they partici-pate in, “so everybody is a winner.”
The events offered were foot, wheel-chair and scooter races, the softball throw, the standing long jump, and the soccer kick, and while each event could be considered a competition, the ath-letes were celebrating just being able to take part.
After winning a blue ribbon in the soccer kick, 12-year-old Brian White Jr. ran to his dad, threw his arms around him, and asked, “did you see me dad?”
His parents, Brian and Rachel White, squeezed their son tightly and assured him they had saw him and that they were proud of him.
Bryant explained that the children get a sense of accomplishment by doing something that maybe they didn’t think they could do before and by having lots of people around to cheer them on.
And there was no shortage of specta-tors or volunteers. Lisa Smith said she had taken the day off from work to sit in the stands and cheer on the athletes.
“Most people take for granted being able to play sports or go for a run around the block. These kids don’t get to do that every day, so it’s so wonderful that they get to feel that everyone is here for them,” she said.
Smith said her brother had suffered from muscular dystrophy growing up, and though he never had the chance to participate in the Special Olympics, “he would have absolutely loved it.”
The opening ceremony for the event followed closely to the other Olympics, including the lighting of a torch, the honors for which went to Jazmin Arnold of Pepperell High School.
There were plenty of volunteers on
hand as well to make sure everything ran smoothly for this involved in the annual event.
Students from middle and high schools across the city and county helped run the events and cheer on the athletes. Other volunteers came from the com-munity at large.
Sarah Hartwell, a Cave Spring resi-dent, said she enjoyed volunteering for the Special Olympics almost as much as the students enjoyed competing in the various events.
“It is a rare treat to see some many smiling faces in one place lately. Most kids are so hard to please, but these lovely children take so much pleasure
from being able to run and kick a ball and being cheered for that it makes my heart feel good,” she said.

Dear John: With the sudden warmer weather, I know it’s recommend-ed to change the direc-tion on my ceiling fans. I never can remember which way is for which season. I think you’ve covered this before, but would you mind doing it one more time for the “Can’t Remember” person?
Dear “Can’t Re-member” person: Don’t feel bad. When you only encounter a sit-uation twice a year, it’s difficult for a lot of us to remember certain things.
With regard to the ceiling fans though, either direction serves the purpose of circulat-ing air within the room or the area the fan is located in, which tends to stabilize the air tem-perature in that area and/or make it more consistent.
Hot air rises, so without a fan the ceiling will almost always be warmer than the floor. The main reason for changing the direction
in warm or cold seasons is to increase or decrease the effect we feel from the fan.
In warm weather you want the fan blowing air downward. With the air moving down from the area of the fan and pos-sibly blowing onto our body, it tends to increase the evaporative cooling effect of the body and we feel cooler. It’s much the same as if you had a regular fan flowing on you.
In the winter we don’t want that evapora-tive cooling effect of the body so we change the direction of the fan to blow air upward. This way the air tends to flow out across the ceiling and down the walls, which still stabilizes the air temperature in the fan area, but reduces the overall effect we feel from the circulating air.

Are you one of the 65.2 percent of American adults that are over-weight or obese? Chances are if you are not, someone close to you is.
With well over half of the adults living in the United States being overweight, dieting and fad diets have become a common part of our daily life. We talk about diets with our friends, we hear reviews of the latest diets on talk shows, we read about diets in every mag-azine we open. And when we are not actually on a diet, we are planning our next one.
Dieting is one of those things that has become part of our Amer-ican culture. On any given day, a huge portion of the population is “on a diet” and “counting calories.”
Have you ever wondered why, for so many people, weight gain seems to be a fact of life? It is because the human body is way too efficient! It just does not take that much energy to maintain the human body at rest; and when exercising, the body is amazingly frugal when it comes to turning food into motion.
While sitting at your desk or watching television, your body only burns about 12 calories per pound of body weight per day. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, your body only uses about 1,800 calories per day. Those 1,800 calo-ries are used to fuel your body and do everything you need to stay alive:l They keep your heart beating
and your lungs breathing.l They keep your internal
organs operating properly.l They keep your brain running.l They keep your body warm.The 1,800 calories that a typical
person at rest needs per day is just not that many. For example, if you go to your favorite fast food res-taurant for a burger, fries, and a large drink, this one meal contains approximately 1,600 calories — nearly an entire day's worth of cal-ories in a single meal. Add to that a several hundred calorie snack
from the vending machine at school or work, or a “light” snack at bedtime and we are at our daily intake limit ... and that is without even considering other meals and the drinks that we are consuming.
Without even realizing it, we can easily consume 3,000, 4,000, or even more calories per day without any effort at all. So what happens to all these extra calories that our body doesn't need? Well, as it turns out, our bodies are very effi-cient at capturing and storing those excess calories and saving them for a rainy day. Anything over that 1,800 calories (for a 150 pound person) is going to be deposited right where we least want it!
When you consider that it only takes 3,500 excess calories to create one pound of new fat on your body, gaining weight is a breeze. If you take in just 500 excess calories per day (a handful of chips here and a couple of cookies there), you could easily gain a pound of fat per week (500 calories x 7 days in a week = 3,500 calories or 1 pound). That is an easy 50 pounds per year!
By the same token, if you will eliminate a mere 500 calories a day from your intake, you can easily lose a pound a week. That is an easy 50 pounds a year! The little things — like cleaning your plate when you are already full, that handful of chips, that extra cookie, that sweetened drink — do add up and make a huge differ-ence in your bottom, ahem, line.
Weight Loss Myths:There are dozen of weight loss
myths that help to derail people. Here are some of the most common ones so you can avoid them:l The myth that some kinds of
calories are different from others.The Truth? A calorie is a calorie
is a calorie. Whether you consume 4,000 calories by eating 1,000 grams of white sugar or 4,000 calories by eating 444 grams of fat, it is still 4,000 calories.
l The myth that low-fat foods are okay or that you can eat as much as you want if it is low fat.
The Truth? A product can have 0 grams of fat, but still have lots of calories. May fat-free foods replace the the fat with sugar and contain just as many or more cal-ories as a fat containing product.l The myth that any passive
device, acupressure rings and brace-lets, or soaps or whatever, can help.
The Truth? There is no way to burn calories but to burn them.l The myth that you can lose 54
pounds in six weeks. Gotta love those ads: “I LOST 54 POUNDS IN 6 WEEKS WITHOUT DIET OR EXERCISE!” or “LOSE 10 POUNDS THIS WEEKEND!” Ever notice how these ads are always in bold?
The Truth? You cannot lose a pound unless you burn off 3,500 cal-ories. Period! To lose 54 pounds in six weeks, you would need to lose nine pounds in seven days or 1.3 pounds per day. That 1.3 pounds of fat is equal to 4,500 calories, so you would have to burn off 4,500 calo-ries per day. The only way to do that would be to eat nothing and run a marathon every day for 42 days. The only way to lose that much weight that quickly is either through ampu-tation or liposuction — both rather extreme measures. The ads are lying.l The myth that anything can
create an “enzyme-driven fat burning cycle.” You see ads all the time that tell you one food or another is going to create some miracle in your body that will burn the maximum amount of calories 24 hours a day.
