Bridging the skills gap

The two year FDM Careers Programme is designed to equip individuals with technical expertise and commercial experience enabling fast-track career progression into the IT industry. The roadmap below is an illustration of the journey that our Consultants undertake. Once they complete the programme, the sky is the limit.

As this award-winning training is fully funded by FDM, our trainees commit to work for FDM for a period of two years following completion. This commitment not only allows FDM to provide guaranteed continuity of service to clients, but also the ability to scale at speed. Once the twenty-four month bond is complete, FDM Consultants can transition permanently onto client sites or can remain with FDM as Senior Consultants.

WOMEN IN IT

informed and when she needs to validate a query she knows who to speak to. In addition to being extremely bright, Dalia’s work ethic is very strong.

SUCCESS STORY: BANK OF AMERICAThe Challenge

Having discovered that their internal technology organisation was lacking mid-level female professionals, BAML sought to ascertain ways to improve these demographics. An issue identified was that many women found the competitive Hong Kong job market to make it increasingly challenging to re-enter the workforce, as candidates whose CVs reflected gaps in their professional careers were typically overlooked.

The Solution

FDM partnered with BAML and The Women’s Foundation to help them launch an initiative designed to better identify, assist, and reskill these individuals seeking to return to work. BAML chose FDM as a partner for this initiative due to our existing relationship and the comprehensiveness of FDM’s recruitment and selection process. FDM recruited and pre-selected talented candidates who matched the eligibility requirements provided by BAML. Unique interview criteria were set, and FDM and BAML hiring managers then co-hosted rotation-style interview sessions structured around transferable skills, career aspirations, previous experiences and situational questions. 10 of these candidates were shortlisted to participate in FDM’s Getting Back to Business Programme, with training tailored to BAML’s technical requirements.

The Outcome

This group of FDM Returners to Work completed their training and were placed successfully at BAML across a number of business specialties, in areas including Production Support, Business Continuity, Market Data Engineering, Portfolio Change, and more. The feedback from the line managers for these individuals has been outstanding, and many are likely to transition permanently to the client following completion of their two-year bond. For these individuals, the FDM Getting Back to Business Programme provided them an opportunity to update their skillsets and successfully transition back into the corporate workplace with the potential for lucrative career progression.

As a business, inclusivity is one of our values and we embrace the differences that make us stronger as a whole. We don’t have quotas or diversity recruitment targets, because we don’t need them – being diverse is quite simply part of who we are.

We employ talent from a range of educational and socioeconomic backgrounds, ranging from universities to non-profit training organisations and ex-Forces. As an equal opportunity employer, our aim is to build an inclusive environment where people from all backgrounds and ethnicities are able to thrive.

Chester showed a remarkable capacity for learning the necessary technologies very quickly and was able to finish these projects much faster than I would have expected. I don’t think I have ever needed to explain anything more than once. That shows that not only does he learn things quickly, but also that he is very attentive.

Team Leader, Murex

Edmund’s ability to start from the ground up is clearly due to the training and preparation provided by FDM. We are using FDM in our Rates business and we would seek other FDM employees when the opportunity is right.

Vice President, BAML

I have nothing but praise for Jamie and feel his contribution has been invaluable. Jamie has had to take a leading role in the projects he has been involved in, often having to take the ‘bull by the horns’ and push for direction and more information when this was not forthcoming by the PMs.

Testing Team Manager, HSBC

Eric was a key player in redesigning the SharePoint department into a more intuitive and streamlined repository for critical documentation. He played a vital role that determined the betterment of the organisation strategically.

RESULTS THAT MATTER

HSBC

The Challenge: HSBC wanted to further develop their Chinese Murex Centre of Excellence, which is a near shore support centre for the bank’s Hong Kong operations. They required individuals who were fluent in Cantonese and/or Mandarin and English. FDM was tasked with sourcing a team of Chinese Nationals to work for HSBC at their Guangzhou site.

The Solution: FDM ran a Guangzhou specific recruitment drive with HSBC, aimed particularly at mainland Chinese Master’s students who were studying and due to graduate in the UK. FDM received an array of high-calibre bilingual applicants who were keen to work for HSBC on their Guangzhou site on the completion of their Murex training.

The Outcome: The selected candidates were trained in Murex Support and Capital Markets and progressed to work for HSBC in Guangzhou. The FDM Consultants on-site have already helped to minimise the costs and maximise the efficiency of the Chinese Murex Centre of Excellence thanks to their high level of bespoke Murex training and expert language skills.

BNP Paribas

The Challenge: Within BNP Paribas, IT and Operations are currently working together under the same business unit (ITO), which is organised by asset classes. In 2014, Fixed Income Operations recognised that they had become too reliant on temporary staff and BNPP faced issues retaining skills; they were in need of a reliable partner to diversify their workforce whilst improving their sourcing. BNPP recognised the value and skill sets of FDM Consultants, and, in an unprecedented move, BNPP on-boarded non-IT graduate Consultants to fill non-technical roles focusing on KYC and Due Diligence activities.

The Solution: FDM worked with BNPP to identify, assess, train and place candidates who were confident making informed decisions, often under pressure, analysing situations with reference to global events or politics and who had a strong desire to forge a career in finance. FDM led a recruitment drive to fulfil 30 roles within the BNPP operation across London and Paris. FDM was also able to promote the BNPP brand within the graduate population and invoke an interest in working within the French investment banking sector.

FDM also integrated technological aspects into the training process, teaching candidates how to leverage new technology to improve operational processes. This provided them with the appropriate knowledge from within the finance domain as well as the soft skills to fit into BNPP’s culture.

The Outcome: FDM and BNPP duplicated FDM’s sourcing business model across BNPP Operations. The aim was to combine the flexibility of on-boarding FDM Consultants with the opportunity for knowledge retention, as FDM Consultants could transition to become permanent employees at BNPP.

In 18 months, BNPP on-boarded 30 FDM Consultants within their Operations department across London and Paris, supporting Trade Support, Risk and PnL, KYC and back office FOREX projects. Today, Operation Fixed Income comprises over 50% of FDM’s footprint at BNPP, with visibility to duplicate the sourcing model through different asset classes. BNPP has continued to identify roles which need to be filled through FDM. In Paris, BNPP and FDM are discussing a driven recruitment proposition to replicate what was orchestrated in the UK.
