TheBasicsWhatisDrawdown-Drawdownisthepointintimewhentheconcentrationofgreenhousegasesintheatmospherepeakandbegintodeclineonayeartoyearbasis.GoaloftheDrawdownProject-Toidentify,measureandmodelthe100mostimpactful,substantivesolutionstoglobalwarmingthateitherreduceemissionsorremovegreenhousegasesfromtheatmosphereandtodeterminewhetheritispossibletoachieveDrawdownwithinthenext30years,by2050.DrawdownTeam-Drawdownisacoalitionofover200contributorsfromover22countriesincluding62researchers,130advisorsand49outsideexperts.HowtoachieveDrawdown-Toachievedrawdownweneedtodrawgreenhousegasesdownfromtheatmospherebacktotheearth.Thisalreadyhappenseveryyearviaphotosynthesisbutwehavetorebalancethequantityofemissionswiththeearth’scapacitytobringthosegasesbackhome.TheMandate-Tomap,measureandmodelsubstantive,technological,ecological,andbehavioralsolutionsandanalyzetheirpotentialtoreduceanddrawdowngreenhousegasesovera30yearperiod.GreenhouseGases-Greenhousegasesincludecarbondioxide,methane,fluorinatedgasesandseveralothersallwithdifferentglobalwarmingimpacts.Toenableconsistency,scientistscalculatethewarmingpotentialofdifferentgreenhousegasesandconvertittoacarbonequivalenttouseasacommon‘carbon’currency.InDrawdown,referencestocarbondioxideincludetheimpactofother,equivalentgreenhousegases,suchasmethaneorfluorinatedgases,basedontheirglobalwarmingpotential.TheSciencebehindDrawdownAssessment-Theprojectfocussedonexistingsolutionswithsufficientdataavailableforglobalmodelling.Thesolutionswerethenevaluatedbasedontheircurrentperformance,scalability,economicviability,potentialtoreducegreenhousegasesover30yearsandthebalanceofotherpositive/negativeimpacts.Three-stageProcess-Everysolutionwasresearchedina3stepprocess:(i)analyzingtechnicalreportswithfinancialandclimatedata,(ii)reviewingtoensuredataintegrity(iii)modelingtoassessintegrationofsolutionsandeliminatedoublecounting.

Modelling-Eachsolutionismeasuredandmodeledtodetermineitsglobalcarbonimpactbetween2020-2050.Theresultsincludethe(i)ranking(ii)carbonavoided,reduced,orsequestered(iii)thecosttoimplementand(iv)netcost/savingsovera30yearperiod.Theimpactsarequotedingigatonsofcarbondioxidereferencedagainsta‘businessasusual’baseline.Scenarios-Threedifferentscenariosweremodelledusingdifferentunderlyingassumptions(e.g.futuregrowthrates,costreductions,improvementsintechetc).Themostconservativescenario(the“plausible’scenariointhebook)reachesdrawdownby2060,themiddle“drawdown”scenarioby2050andthemoreaggressive,or“optimum”scenario,reachesdrawdownpotentiallyasearlyas2045.
