• The NHS Core Learning Unit (NHS CLU) was established in October 2005.

• The NHS CLU programmes are accredited courses and are mapped to the key national standards such as the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework (KSF), risk management standards of the NHS Litigation Authority, standards for better health and where relevant the hospital technical memorandum.

CURRENTLY AVAILABLE

1. Infection Control – 2 hours to complete the e-learning component, which CNO

recommends every member of staff completes.

2. Fire Safety Awareness – 2 hour e-learning programme designed to support and

enhance the normal face to face delivery within an organisation.

3. Health and Safety Awareness – A one hour e-learning programme designed to support and

enhance normal face to face delivery within an organisation. – Endorsed by Health & Safety Executive and NHS Employers.

4. Manual Handling – A one hour e-learning programme designed to support and

enhance normal face to face delivery within an organisation – Endorsed by National Back Exchange and NHS Employers.

5. Customer Care – The Customer Care programme has completed it's revision and

is now reprinted in it's slim line version.

6. Equality and Diversity – Respect for People – A 2 hour e-learning programme. A workbook version is available

from Grassroots.

7. Disability Awareness – A 2 hour e-learning programme. A workbook version is

available from Grassroots.

8. Introduction to Patient Safety – A two hour e-learning programme.

9. Being Open – A blended learning programme.

10. Medical Gases for Nurses – A 2 hour e-learning programme.

11. Infusion Devices – A 40 hour learning programme with a blended learning

approach, e-learning, face to face, all supported by work based practical Competencies. Programme designed for staff working with Infusion Devices – usually staff at a post graduate level, including social care staff.

12. Child Protection – A 2 hour e-learning awareness programme which can be

accessed as a paper based work-book.

13. Mixed Messages – A one hour e-learning programme. – Will be accredited with C&G.

COMING SOON

1. Mentoring for Success – This is currently being revalidated and following a small amount

of revision will be available from March 2008.

2. Conflict Resolution – An e-learning programme is under development.– Will be accredited by City and Guilds at level 2 and will be

added to Common Induction Award.

3. Immunisation and Vaccination – A paper based programme being developed.– Will be accredited with C&G.

4. Public Health – Expert reference group scoping final programme with DH and

the Open University. – Will be accredited with City and Guilds at level 2, and intended

to be part of the Common Induction Award.

5. Food & Nutrition– Under discussion and being sourced at the moment. – Linked to Essence of Care accreditation.

6. Protection of Vulnerable Adults – Sourcing this programme at the moment. – Will seek accreditation from City and Guilds.

• Developments

– The Infection Control programme is being altered so that it is appropriate for use in a ‘Social Care’ setting, and will be ready for national release on the 1st March 2008. Whilst the programme itself will be free the hosting and tracking needs to be paid for.

– Each of the 3 Statutory & Mandatory programmes have been evaluated by their ‘Expert Reference Groups’ and are currently being updated.

– CLU rationalising all of the data and compiling lists of all programme uptake by SHA area / organisations. This will show SHA’s which of their organisations are accessing what programmes.

• Developments

– Revising all the documents which will in turn be mapped to National Occupational Standards, KSF, Health Care Commission Standards, NHS Litigation Authority Standards and NVQs. These documents will be sent out to SHA leads at the same time as the uptake by organisation data.

– 36 people have enrolled on the distance learning Foundation Degree in NHS Administration which started in October. The next intake is in February 2008. Two year work based foundation degree with the option to complete third year for full degree.

• My Learning

– Click the My Learning tab to access your personalised training plan. This section is sub-divided into three areas to make it easier for you to find the courses, tutorials or exams you want to study.

• My Courses

This area provides an alphabetical listing of all the courses you have been assigned by your training administrator. A course is a group of tutorials and/or exams.

• Green means that you have not started the course.

• Yellow means that you have started, but not completed, the course.

• Red means that you have completed the course.

• My Progress

• This section provides you with a detailed report of your training progress. The following information is provided:

– Tutorials studied – this lists all the tutorials you have studied.

– Last study date – this details the last date you studied a given tutorial.

– Study time – this records the amount of time you spent studying each listed tutorial.

– Content viewed – this details the amount of content studied in a tutorial.

– Score – this gives you the score you received in the tutorial test, if applicable.

– Status – this gives you an indication of how far you progressed in a tutorial. The status may be: Passed: You have passed the tutorial test; Failed: You have failed the tutorial test; Completed: You have viewed all screens in the tutorial; Incomplete: You have viewed some screens but have not attempted the Evaluate phase.

– Affordable training solution.

– Staff receive the training that they require.

– The training is quality assured by ‘Expert Reference Groups’, which are made up of subject expects from the service. This means that you know the training that your staff receive is fit for purpose and responsive to any policy changes.

– As everyone receives the same high standard of training, this is therefore transferable amongst organisations.

– Learners can complete their training anywhere, anytime and at their own pace.

• Blended approach

– It is important to remember that all the programmes are designed to be as part of a blended approach to training.

– They are designed to provide everyone with the background level of knowledge they need so that local trainers are free to focus on other more specialised areas of training.

• Success stories

– The Infection Control programme now has over 55,000 registered users across the NHS in England since it’s launch in October 2005.
