THE NICENE CREED Reasons for its Development and its Implications

Brief History of Christian movement:

There was a diversity in Christianity, and was trying to develop the difference between Jews and Christians.

1. Nazarenes Heresy (Jewish) 2. Ebionites (low Christology) 3. Gnostics (knowledge for salvation; evil of material) 4. Marcionites (refusal of Jewishness)

By the third century catholicity was being developed as the canon is being orchestrated.

Constantine’s vision opens the door to acceptance

Edict of Milan declares acceptance

Then the Nicene Creed opens the belief of all Christians

The First Council of Nicaea was a council of Christian bishops convened in Nicaea in Bithynia (present-day İznik in Turkey) by the Roman Emperor Constantine I in A.D. 325. The Council was the first effort to attain consensus in the church through an assembly representing all of Christendom.[2]

The following table juxtaposes the earlier (325 AD) and later (381 AD) forms of this Creed in the English translation given in Schaff's work, Creeds of Christendom, which indicates by [square brackets] the portions of the 325 text that were omitted or moved in 381, and uses italics to indicate what phrases, absent in the 325 text, were added in 381.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF 325 CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty

maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God, begotten, not made,

one in Being with the Father. Through him all things were made.

For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven

by the power of the Holy Spirit he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.
