Something to Think About this May Shared from the Book:

Reflections from Pope Francis

An invitation to Journaling, Prayer, and Action

85. Center Your Life on The Lord If money and material things become the center of

our lives, they seize us and make us slaves.

98. Carry Another’s Burden To live charitably means not looking out for our own interests, but carrying the burdens of the

weakest and poorest among us.

100. Be Holy Holiness doesn’t mean doing extraordinary things

but doing ordinary thinks with love and faith.

Prayers were requested for the following Brothers

and other individuals –Joe Raduka, Pat Butler,

Ron Swizeral, John Bush, Jack Landers, Tim Downey,

Renee Foos, for Mike Rheaume Sr. and Mike

Rheaume Jr. for the sudden loss of their loving

Wife/mother Sue; and for our veterans.

Chaplain’s Corner

Can you believe that it is the month of May already?? It is a special month because it means that summer will be here soon! But it is an extra special month because it’s the month of Mary our Mother. We honor her as we know she bore the gift of the child Jesus for our world. Her song of joy is – “my being proclaims the greatness of The Lord." And our own being should proclaim her greatness through prayer, grace, and love. I encourage you to pray the rosary every day during the month of May. And if not, at least say her prayer – HAIL MARY – several times throughout each day. May also allows us to honor our moms with the celebration of Mother's Day. So, whether living or deceased, be sure to say or pray Happy Mother's Day to your Mom, your Grandmother, your Godmother, and all who “Mother" you with their love and care!!! God has blessed us with all those people! We need to bless them with our love and prayer. Happy May month! Happy Mary month! Happy Mom month!

A Hearty “Welcome” to Our Newest 1st Degree Knights! On Thursday, April 6th, Bill Kapolas joined our Holy Ghost Council by attending an Admission (1st) Degree conducted by the Holy Rosary Council #4483 in Arlington Heights. Interestingly, a total of three candidates went through the ceremonials, but only Bill was a true candidate. The other two “candidates” were actually already Brothers who accompanied Bill through the ceremonials. Bill was unaware of the other two candidates’ true status until after the ceremony was concluded. Our sincere thanks to the Holy Rosary Council for going forward with the Admission Degree despite not having more candidates. This was greatly appreciated.

On Monday, April 24th, our Holy Ghost Council conducted an Admission (1st) Degree ceremonial at St. Thomas. Five new members joined our Fraternal Order as 1st Degree Knights. The four Brothers to the right in the group picture (Joe Dubovik, Robert Haufe, Jim Leo, and Nicolas Asta) are now 1st Degree Brothers in our Holy Ghost Council. The gentleman on the left was a guest candidate from St. Marcelline Council #7694 in Schaumburg. Fellowship, food and refreshment followed our successful ceremonial.

While we do not have a picture to share, our Holy Ghost Council also celebrates the transfer of Deacon Jim Devine (St. Theresa). Welcome to the Holy Ghost Council! Worthy New Brothers - Congratulations and Welcome to our Council!!!

Offer a prayer of Thanksgiving for Father Tom and

our current priests. And at the same time, pray for

all current seminarians and postulants, and for

those contemplating joining the religious vocation.

Mahoney Receives Shining Armor Award

John Mahoney was awarded the Shining Armor Award for his service to the Order with distinction during his first year of membership. The Shining Armor Award is available to those Brothers that demonstrate enthusiasm for the Knights of Columbus by completing 5 categories of activities during their first year of membership. These requirements are:

Be involved in at least 3 council service programs;

Attend at least 3 council business meetings; Advance to the 2nd and 3rd degrees; Meet with the K of C Field Agent

(Pierre Zermatten); and Recruit at least one new member

The underlining concept of the Shining Armor Award program is to encourage new members to become active in the various facets of the Knights of Columbus as early as possible and, in recognition of their achievements, honor them as a valued member of our Fraternal Order.

Please extend your heartiest congratulations to Brother John Mahoney for his worthy achievement!

Calling All Field Agent’s!

Dear Brother Knights, In order to provide our members with the service they deserve, I plan on increasing the full-time staff in our area. The ideal candidate should have an entrepreneurial spirit, strong work ethic, possibly some sales experience, unquestionable honesty and a desire to assist his Brother Knights and their families. Perhaps he is dissatisfied due to the recent changes in his job or he has limited earning potential. What do our Field Agents do? They devote their entire working day to the needs of our Brother Knights in their assigned councils. We have established territories within which agents can work with their assigned membership. Our agent’s help our members determine their needs for life insurance or annuities, and then help provide the proper coverage based on our member's needs, budget and retirement plans. We work with Brother Knights and Catholic gentlemen who are eligible to join the Knights of Columbus. That is a tall order for this unique position. In addition to a handsome compensation package that offers group insurance, life insurance, health and accident insurance, disability insurance, dental insurance, a 401-K program, an expense allowance, a training allowance and a "non-contributory" pension plan, the Knights of Columbus has several levels of career opportunity. With the Knights of Columbus there are no limits on your professional growth and earning power. Would you be kind enough to return this letter with your thoughts or you may call me at (517)896-0108. Thanks again for our participation in our programs. Jim Lutz General Agent - Archdiocese of Chicago (517)896-0108 or [email protected]

Reflections from 1st Time Attendee of a Knights of Columbus IL State Convention I was blessed recently with an opportunity to attend the Knights of Columbus Annual State Convention. This prestigious gathering took place in Springfield on Friday eve through early Sunday afternoon, April 21-23. As our worthy DGK Bruce Alesi just couldn’t figure out how to be in two places at the same time so, he kindly asked me – Bob Novak – to go in his place as a voting delegate (To his full credit, Bruce was charitably committed to his continuing responsibilities with the Kairos Prison Ministry, a worthy group of volunteers who bring Christ’s Love and Forgiveness to the incarcerated – this time in downstate Statesville Correctional Center). Our Holy Ghost Council was well represented with six Brothers attending – GK Jim Arns, Charlie Foos, Jack McCarthy, Jim Killigrew, Pierre Zermatten and myself. At the top of the list of experiences… Our council was honored to receive the State Deputy Achievement Award. This prestigious honor, conferred by State Deputy Bill Doerfler, recognized our Holy Ghost Council #4977 as having demonstrated “Championship Potential” and for “Achieving the Highest Standard of Excellence”! Congratulations Brothers One and All!

In order that you may get a flavor of the

convention, here are but a few observations and

reflections on my experience – in no

particular order:

Overall, a very spirited, uplifting and spiritual affair. We estimated about 600 Brothers attended the state convention. It was very positive and comforting to be in the presence of so many like-minded Catholic Brothers and Ladies; truly dedicated to the principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. A personal highlight was attending Saturday afternoon mass at Springfield’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

There are about 505 Councils in Illinois. About 72,500 members. An average Council size is about 145 Brothers.

Wonderful Pro-Life News! There are about 760 Ultrasound machines placed across the country by the Knights of Columbus. These life-saving machines are estimated to save about 100,000 babies per year from abortion.

Intellectual Disability Drive. As we know, the first principle of the Knights of Columbus is Charity. The I.D. Drive State goal is $1,820,000 for the current Fraternal Year. As of April 1st, just $19,000 short of the goal. Very close to goal! o The average I.D. Donation per Council is

about $3,600. o Our Holy Ghost Council was the 5th largest

in Illinois totaling $27, 600 in I.D. Drive donations! We were but $6,000 from the largest Council, which contributed $33,600. Well Done Brothers!

Our esteemed Brother and top gun Field Agent – Pierre Zermatten – was spotlighted and honored. Pierre wrote K of C insurance coverage in excess of $17 million this fraternal year (as of April 1). Remarkably, this total is $5 million greater than the next closest Field Agent in the state! Congratulations Pierre on your extraordinary achievement.

Via a video, our Supreme Knight Carl Anderson messaged a recruiting push to increase membership. His important points included the following: o Today’s recruiting success contributes to

the K of C success for many years to come.

Page 8: The nightly Newsuknight.org/Councils/2017 05 Knightly News.pdf · Ron Swizeral, John Bush, Jack Landers, Tim Downey, Renee Foos, for Mike Rheaume Sr. and Mike Rheaume Jr. for the

o Efforts are often fulfilled in the last couple months of the Fraternal Year (which ends June 30). Charlie – many thanks for the clarification!!! We are prayerful of this outcome!

Finally, a Hearty Congratulation is in order

for Brother Jack McCarthy, who was elected

to represent the Chicago Diocese as a Voting

Delegate at the 2017 Supreme Convention. The

Supreme Convention will meet in St. Louis, MO

early in August. Congratulations Brother Jack!

Council 4977 wishes you a

Happy Memorial Day and thanks those

that have served this great country.

o In Illinois, it was sadly noted that an average of 125 Brothers die each month.

o The Supreme Knight asked us to strive to be the Catholic Man that attracts new Catholic Men to our Order.

o Every Catholic Man should be given an opportunity to join the K of C.

An important recruiting note for our Holy Ghost Council #4977. Thanks to the earnest work of many Brothers, our Holy Ghost Council #4977 was the Top Recruiting Council in Illinois with a total of 33 additions as of April 1st (we are now at 38)!

Unfortunately, it is not all roses for the Illinois Knights of Columbus. A few sobering issues were necessarily discussed: o Less than 30% of the State’s Councils were

represented at this year’s convention. While consistent with prior years, it is nonetheless disappointing.

o Less than 5% of members are responsible for signing up 80% of new Knights!

o The Newman Fund (the #1 K of C charitable effort in Illinois) is suffering for donations, in part, as a result of Century Donors passing away. Century donors contribute $100 dollars or more to the Newman Fund annually. The issue is that not enough Brothers are stepping up to replace these lost donations. As of April 1st, the collections stood at $180,000 against a goal of $289,000.

o The State’s General Assistance Fund goal was $63,500. Only $16,000 collected as of April 1. The GAF Fund exists to provide financial assistance to alleviate human suffering during times of sudden and catastrophic need or extraordinary loss.

o Pro-Life Goal at $63,000. Actual at $8,000. Sadly, 409 Councils (80%) are not participating with donations to the State’s Pro-Life fund.

o Important Positive Note!!! Brother Charlie Foos, who has had extensive experience at the state level, provided some hopeful clarity to these early financial results mentioned above. Brother Charlie pointed out that the goals of these charitable

For your reference, the following information is

being re-run from the March 2017 newsletter:

Any eligible (3rd Degree) member who is

considering running for office should contact the

Caucus Committee Chairman, Jack McCarthy, at

[email protected] and indicate his desire

to run for office. This is also true of current officers

as the Caucus Committee can only consider those

members who have expressed in writing their

intentions. The Caucus Committee is comprised of

all living Past Grand Knights, and the current Grand

Knight of Holy Ghost Council #4977. At the Caucus

Committee Meeting, all candidates who are

currently serving as Officers who wish to move up

through the chairs will be given consideration for

advancement. When the Caucus Committee has

completed that task, they will then give

consideration to any open Officer Position and

potential candidates to fill any open Officer

Position. The recommendation of the Caucus

Committee for all offices will be presented to the

General Membership at the May 8th General

Business Meeting, and the election of Officers will

be held at the June 12th General Business Meeting.

On the evening of the Election, the Caucus

Committee proposed slate of Candidates for all

Offices will be read prior to the actual voting. Even

though the Caucus Committee makes a

recommendation for all offices, the proposed

candidate must have his name placed in

nomination by a member of the Council, and the

nomination must be seconded. The Election

Chairman will then ask for any additional

nominations for that office three times. If no other

nominations are made, the Election Chairman will

ask for a motion that nominations be closed, and

that the sole nominee be elected by a unanimous

vote of the Council Members, and such motion

requires a second. Any eligible member not on the

proposed slate who wishes consideration for ANY

OFFICE may have his name placed in nomination

for a specific office by a member of the council.

This nomination will only be acceptable if the

proposer has sought and obtained the permission

of the person being nominated. The Nomination

must then be seconded by another member of

the Council.

In the event any Officer Position has multiple

candidates seeking that office, a written ballot will

be required to determine the winner. In order to

insure the written ballots are properly accounted

for, the Chairman of the Caucus Committee will

appoint an Election Judge and two Tellers. The

Election Judge shall supervise the vote count and

verify that the results are in fact true and accurate.

After the results are made known to the Caucus

Committee Chair and he announces them, the

Election Judge shall give all of the ballots cast to

the Caucus Committee Chair who will destroy

them. The Election Judge, the two Tellers and the

Caucus Committee Chair are strictly forbidden

from disclosing the tally of the written ballots.

If anyone has any specific questions regarding any

Officer Position, you are encouraged to contact the

Caucus Committee Chairman.

Heather’s House Needs Our Help

As discussed at the May Council meeting, Heather’s House is in need of our help. They are running low on disposable diapers (newborn to two years). If you are able, please bring a package of disposable diapers to our June Council meeting and they will be delivered to Heather’s House to help meet the need of keeping the babies comfortable. Heather’s House is doing an awesome job providing a home and direction for mothers and their babies who have chosen life. Residents are able to stay from 6 months to 2 years. During this time, staff and residents provide a terrific support family, which allow these women to succeed rather than feel as if they have no other choice. Thanks in advance for supporting this cause!
