August 10, 2014

Please see the following background of our new painting from the Artist - Adrian Martinez.

The Sacrifice of Abraham and Isaac is one of the darker stories in the Old Testament, the Visitation of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth is one of the most joyful. These two paintings like the stories they depict are greatly contrasting but not conflicting. Framed within individual 20’ alcoves these 9’x6’ paintings flank the high altar of the new Saint Joseph Church. Following the arched top of each work is a large, obscurely painted, wing forming a pair, right and left. Together they attempt to soar but are kept earthbound by the tragedy of the great crucifix above the high altar that physically separates, and spiritually connects them. In the left alcove, Abraham is about his terrible work, the two figures revealed in a momentary flash of lightning. This harshly lit instant of horror is to be resolved just as quickly. The ram in the shadows at Isaac’s feet is there to honor the covenant. Tragedy is at once averted and prefigured.

Abraham stands draped in a gleaming white alb linen garment symbolizing purity and the holiness of life. The glowing angel and gleaming Abraham both act at the very intersection of life and death. However, unlike Abraham depicted here in his unimaginable suffering, we know how this moment is about to be resolved. Isaac crouching down on one knee unaware that he is delivering the wood for his own pyre raises his right hand and turns his head. Not in defense or fear but in surprise. Isaac cannot yet imagine the terror awaiting him. His feet are bare symbolizing that he is on sacred ground. The deep red garment is the color of blood and traditionally associated with the sacrifice of early Christian martyrs.

The black void surrounding the two figures symbolize chaos and death, but in Renaissance and Baroque art a major black element, combined with white, like the dazzling white of the robed patriarch, is suggestive of humility and purity. In this painting black and white are used in both aspects.

Unlike the black void with its existential vacuum of despair used in the Abraham and Isaac painting, “The Visitation” takes place before an ancient wall in a relatively shallow space. Mary and Elizabeth stand like a tableau as if in a Medieval Mystery play. This painting depicts Mary, already with child, visiting her older cousin. Unknown to Mary the angel Gabriel had recently informed Elizabeth that she will give birth to John the Baptist. Subsequently, Elizabeth is the first to realize the true nature of Jesus and leans forward to embrace Mary saying “And why is it that the Mother of my Lord should come to me?” At this moment of high drama Jesus kicks in Mary’s womb and she comprehends the consequences of being the Mother of God. Not without anxiety Mary drops the irises picked along the path intending them as a gift for Elizabeth. By the time the flowers hit the ground she will have returned once again to the humble acceptance of God’s will she had struggled to achieve at the Annunciation.

Mary’s blue veil symbolizes heaven and heavenly love. Blue is the traditional color of the Virgin, while her white robe signifies innocence and purity. Both the lily and iris are associated with the Virgin, but where the lily signifies purity the iris or “sword lily” (the leaves are sword like) is an allusion to the passion of Christ and the sorrows of Mary.

Elizabeth’s brown veil signifies renunciation of the world and is the color associated with her son, the soon to be born, John the Baptist. During the Renaissance both Saint Joseph and Saint Peter have often been painted wearing yellow tunics and as such symbolize revealed truth. Grapes, a classical attribute of agriculture and consequently fertility, also signify the blood and sacrifice of Christ, both meanings, contrasting but not conflicting, are brought to bear in this painting.

Today’s Gospel reveals what miraculous things

can happen when one embraces a single-

minded faith in Jesus Christ. Peter gets out of a

wind-tossed boat when the Lord calls him. His

faith is tested by his obedience to Jesus who is

calling him out onto the water. In the midst of

the waves and the wind, Peter gets out of the

boat and walks toward Jesus. Good stewards

heed Christ’s call to them. Sometimes that call

directs them to take on seemingly impossible

challenges. This week, reflect on how the Lord

could be calling you out of the safety of your

own “boat” to take on the impossible.

Legion of Mary This group of men and women demonstrates and deepens their devotion to our Blessed Mother through prayer and service. Active members meet weekly for prayer and discussion of the work of the past week. They routinely visit hospitals and nursing homes, say the rosary with groups of homebound parishioners, and stand ready to assist the pastor when needed. Auxiliary members support the work of active members by praying the rosary and legion prayers daily. Contact Mimma Patrono at 610-384-7933 for more information.

St.JosephYouthMinistryNewsPope Francis listed his Top 10 tips for bringing greater joy to one’s life in an interview published in part in the Argentine weekly “Viva” July 27, - Here is an abbreviated and edited version:

1. “Live and let live.” 2. “Be giving of yourself to others.” “If you withdraw into

yourself, you run the risk of becoming egocentric. And stagnant water becomes putrid.”

3. “Proceed calmly” in life. 4. “A healthy sense of leisure.” 5. “Sunday is for family.” 6. “We need to be creative with young people. If they have

no opportunities they will get into drugs” and be more vulnerable to suicide, he said. “It’s not enough to give them food,” he said. “Dignity is given to you when you can bring food home” from one’s own labor.

7. Respect and take care of nature. 8. Stop being negative. “Needing to talk badly about others

indicates low self-esteem. That means, ‘I feel so low that instead of picking myself up I have to cut others down,’” the pope said. “Letting go of negative things quickly is healthy.”

9. Don’t proselytize; respect others’ beliefs. “We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: ‘I am talking with you in order to persuade you,’ No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing,” the pope said.

10. Work for peace. “We are living in a time of many wars,” he said, and “the call for peace must be shouted. Peace sometimes gives the impression of being quiet, but it is never quiet, peace is always proactive” and dynamic.
