The Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost September 25, 2016 + 9:00 and 11:00 A.M. Welcome to the Lord’s Day. As Pr. Gulhaugen preaches his fi-nal sermon as a called pastor, we encounter a strange gospel: a rich man, a prince among his peers, suffers torment after he dies. He cries out to heaven for help—won’t someone please warn his brothers to live a better life than he did? God has a better idea: His Son, rising from the dead. In Him, our Lord Je-sus Christ, the guilt of the world’s sin is washed away, and sin-ners find themselves redeemed! Here is the message that the Church and her ministers preach, and for which we give thanks today and every day.

Some Thoughts on the Holy Ministry Lord of the living harvest that whitens o’er the plain, Where angels soon shall gather their sheaves of golden grain, Accept these hands to labor, these hearts to trust and love, And deign with them to hasten Thy kingdom from above As laborers in Thy vineyard, Lord, send them out to be Content to bear the burden of weary days for Thee; To ask no other wages, when Thou shalt call them home, But to have shared the travail which makes Thy kingdom come. Be with them, God the Father; be with them, God the Son; And God the Holy Spirit; most blessed Three in One! Make them a royal priesthood Thee rightly to adore, And fill them with Thy fullness both now and evermore. Amen. ~John S.B. Monsell, 1811-1875

P: Most merciful God, C: we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free our-

Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen

P: Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us

and, for his sake, forgives us all our sins. As a called and or-dained minister of the Church, and by the authority of Christ, I therefore forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen Please stand.

CHORAL RESPONSE (9:00 a.m. only)

“Lord, Thee I Love with All My Heart” green hymnal #325 Congregation sings stanzas 1 and 3; choir sings stanza 2.

OLD TESTAMENT Amos 6:1-7 1“Woe to those who are at ease in Zion, and to those who feel se-cure on the mountain of Samaria, the notable men of the first of the nations, to whom the house of Israel comes! 2Pass over to Calneh, and see, and from there go to Hamath the great; then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are you better than these kingdoms? Or is their territory greater than your territory, 3O you who put far away the day of disaster and bring near the seat of violence? 4“Woe to those who lie on beds of ivory and stretch themselves out on their couches, and eat lambs from the flock and calves from the midst of the stall, 5who sing idle songs to the sound of the harp and like David invent for themselves instruments of music, 6who drink wine in bowls and anoint themselves with the finest oils, but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph! 7Therefore they shall now be the first of those who go into exile, and the revelry of those who stretch themselves out shall pass away.” L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

Choir/ Hallelujah! | Praise the LORD, ′O my soul!* L: I will praise the LORD as long as I live; | I will sing praises to my God while I ′have my being. C: Put not your trust in rulers, nor in any ′child of earth,* for there is no ′help in them. Choir/ When they breathe their last, they re′turn to earth,* L: and in that day ′their thoughts perish. C: Happy are they who have the God of Jacob ′for their

them;* L: who keeps his prom′ise forever; C: who gives justice to those who ′are oppressed,* and food to ′those who hunger. Choir/ The LORD sets the prisoners free; | L: the LORD opens the eyes ′of the blind;* the LORD lifts up those who ′are bowed down; C: the LORD loves the righteous; | the LORD cares ′for the stranger;* he sustains the orphan and widow, | but frustrates the way ′of the wicked. When our pastors speak, God works through them to work His gracious mysteries among us. They become the conduit through which the Father speaks, the Son fulfills all right-eousness, and the Spirit hovers over the bap-tismal wa-ters….

EPISTLE 1 Timothy 3:1-13 1The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of over-seer, he desires a noble task. 2Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 4He must man-age his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, 5for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church? 6He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil. 8Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain. 9They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. 10And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless. 11Their wives likewise must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, faithful in all things. 12Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their chil-dren and their own households well. 13For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confi-dence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Please stand.

...What are they of themselves? Nothing dif-ferent from us: weak, sinful, and in need of the same message they deliver to us. But we should not see them in their own person, for if we did, we would never heed them. They come to us in the name of the Triune God, and we should hear them as though our dear Lord dealt with us Himself. ~Scott Murray, 2011 A.D.

VERSE

GOSPEL P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 16th chapter.

19Jesus said, “There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 20And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried, 23and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. 24And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’ 25But Abraham said, ‘Child, re-member that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. 26And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’ 27And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my fa-ther’s house—28for I have five brothers—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ 29But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ 30And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the

Gentle Je-sus, meek and mild...Mild! What a word to use for a personality whose chal-lenge and strange at-tractiveness nineteen centuries have by no means ex-hausted. Jesus Christ might well be called “meek,” in the sense of being selfless and humble and utterly devoted to what He considered right, what-ever the per-sonal cost: but “mild,” never! ~J.B. Phillips, 1906-1982 A.D.

dead, they will repent.’ 31He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’ ” P: The Gospel of the Lord.

APOSTLES CREED P: Let us confess the faith with one heart:

C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was con-ceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the liv-ing and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrec-tion of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

Please be seated.

SUNDAY SCHOOL (9:00 a.m.) During the singing of the hymn, children of preschool age through grade 4 may leave for Sunday School classes downstairs in the church hall. Please reclaim your children at 10:25 a.m. after their music time in the balcony.

P: It is indeed right and salutary . . . we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

SANCTUS (“Holy”)

WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when he was betrayed,

took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is my body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of me.”

In the same way also he took the cup after the supper, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink of it, in remembrance of me.

To obtain (justifying faith) God instituted the office of the minis-try, that is, provided the Gospel and the sacra-ments. Through these, as through means, He gives the Holy Spirit, who works faith, when and where He pleases, in those who hear the Gospel. And the Gospel teaches that we have a gracious God, not by our own merits, but by the merit of Christ, when we believe this.

kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen

The congregation is ushered forward for Communion. If you cannot use the steps to the altar, you may either ask an usher to have Communion brought to you, or you may go to the altar in the side (west) chapel. Those not communing may cross their arms over their chest for a blessing. Holy Communion is the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ which He joyfully gives to His Church to eat and to drink. This gift bestows tre-mendous benefits. His body and blood forgives ours sins, strengthens our faith, binds us to the Lord, and unites us with each other. In this is life and salvation. The Lord therefore invites to His altar baptized Christians who trust that they will receive in Holy Communion all that He promises there: His body and blood, the forgiveness of sins, union with Christ and His Church, life, and salvation. Know that He gives it to you with great joy.
