The Insomnia Wakeup Call: Sleep Deprivation Is A Serious Health Ri
ARA) - It’s 3:30 a.m. and you’ve just rolled over in bed
or what seems like the 500th time. As you watch the min-
utes on the clock tick by, all you can think about is how
ired you are going to be tomorrow. While the cause of your
nsomnia may vary night to night, the outcome is still the
ame: you’re not asleep. You’re also not alone.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporthat somewhere between 50 and 70 million adults in the
United States have chronic sleep and wakefulness disor-
ders.
According to the National Institutes of Health, sleep disor-
ders account for approximately $16 billion in annual health
are costs, and Cornell University psychologist and sleep
xpert James Maas estimates that sleep deprivation and
sleep disorders cost the American economy at least $
billion a year.
Sleep deprivation is not only costly, but dangerous too.
ter a review of national behavioral health data, the C
found that one in 20 adults reported nodding off or fal
asleep while driving at least once in 30 days.
Short term sleep loss can lead to slower reaction tim
headaches, aches and pains, irritability, shorter atten
span and hindered decision making.
The health effects of chronic insomnia are more dif
to study, largely because individuals with insomnia
oftentimes simultaneously suffering from other health
ments, and it becomes difcult to determine the differe

between a direct correlation and a mere statistical associa-
ion. However, there is documented association between
sleep deprivation and diabetes, weight gain, hypertension,
and lower immunity. All of these maladies can lead to even
greater health problems, including heart failure, stroke,
kidney disease and death.
Considering the risks of not sleeping, it is not surprising
hat so many people turn to pharmaceuticals for help. Ac-
cording to IMS Health, Americans spent about $2 billionon prescription sleep drugs in 2010. In 2010 alone, 60 mil-
ion prescriptions for sleep aids were written.
Unfortunately, sleep aids carry their own medical risks. As
s the case with many prescription drugs, there is a chance
of increased tolerance and physical and psychological de-
pendency. Many sleep aids on the market come with side
effects that range from bizarre to dangerous. Sleep aids
have been connected with various incidents of sleep walk-
ng; everything from night eating to actually getting into
vehicles and driving, while still asleep.
Most recently, a study by researchers at Scripps Clinic
erbi Family Sleep Centre in San Diego has linked hypn
sleeping pills to a 4.6 percent greater risk of death and
percent increased risk of cancer among regular pill use
So is there another answer to alleviating insomnia? M
rice Bard, founder and CEO of Mediow Inc., a comp
that makes waterbase cervical pillows, is hopeful. “Be
turning to prescriptions or other more drastic measu
you should examine some non-pharmaceutical remethat could help your sleep problems. The answer to y
insomnia may be simpler than you think.”
Consider the following sleep tips:
Think of a relaxing place
Go on a virtual trip in your mind by picturing a place f
childhood. Trace the roads and paths of this region u
you arrive at a certain place. Usually, you’ll be sleep
before you arrive at your destination.
Expose yourself to bright lights when you wake up
Exposure to bright light early in the morning, t
cally for 30 to 40 minutes, has been shown to prom
healthy habits and a good night’s sleep.
Change your pillow
The ideal pillow is one that helps you maintain nat
alignment between your neck, head and spine as
shift positions during the night. Because people
to change sleeping positions at multiple times duthe night, nding the right pillow is not always eas
waterbase pillow is a good solution, because the
ter gently disperses and lls the region between y
shoulder and jaw, to maintain proper cervical sup
- no matter what position you sleep in.
Establish a routine
By keeping a regular bedtime, your body beco
trained to ritually wind down and speed up,
bringing on sleep more consistently. Consider av
ing daytime naps, as they may alter your body’s nral sleep cycle. Abstaining from naps helps to keep
body on schedule.
“There is no single answer to insomnia,” Bard s
“But at Mediow, we understand the importanc
a good night’s sleep. We rmly believe that com
ing the right products with a healthy lifestyle can
individuals create an overall sleep strategy that sho
help lessen sleep woes.”

ARA) - You’ve landed the right job, you’re earning good

mart - to think about nancial planning and the future.
While you’re working toward building an emergency fund,
aving for a downpayment on a house or
ar and setting aside
omething for retire-
ment, don’t overlook
another important
aspect of nancial
planning - looking af-
er your credit. Even
young professionals
who have a grasp on
other aspects of theirnances may be un-
ure how credit ts
nto the mix.
Generally, people
tarting out in their
areers have one of
wo experiences with
redit: they’ve either
never used it at all, or over used it (in the form of credit
ards or student loans) to the extent that they’re already
deeply in debt. In either scenario, it can be difcult to know
what you need to do to monitor your credit.
f you’re a credit novice, congratulations! Your clean slate
means you have a great opportunity to start out on the right
foot. Your initial steps toward credit management sho
include:
* Obtain your credit report and familiarize yourself w
what’s on it.
* Educate yourself on how a credit score is calculated
what factors inuence your score. These include: paym
history for bills in your name, how much you owe,
length of your credit history and the variety of type
credit you use. Since you’re a credit beginner, you’ll n
to start building a credit history.
* Start making small, judicious uses of credit. For exam

modest purchase of a piece of technology or an appliance.
Pay off the balance immediately. Or, if you need a new ve-
icle, an auto loan can help you build your credit history.
Get into the habit of monitoring your credit regularly with
product like CreditReport.com, which offers its members
aluable tools to help manage their credit for a monthly fee.
f you already have some credit history, the beginning of our career is a great time to review it and take steps to bet-
er manage your credit. Your regular tasks should include:
Reviewing your credit history to get an idea of what
ou’ve done right so far, and what you need to improve.
* Learning what factors inuence your credit score in b
positive and negative ways. For example, paying down
balance on credit cards can improve your utilization ra
* Eliminating credit card debt and making responsible
of other types of credit, such as an auto loan or home m
gage.
The early days of your career can be a busy with a loadjustments, but it’s also a ripe opportunity to plan for y
nancial future. Learning the benets of monitoring y
credit and seeing how it ts into your overall nancial w
being is an important aspect to grasp early on.
