simultaneously overcome multiple challenges, including specific-ity, stability and a high capacity for disparate cargos. Recently developed is a new class of nanocarriers termed protocells that synergistically combine features of porous silica nanoparticles and liposomes. Protocells are constructed through the fusion of liposomes to a spherical, high surface area, porous silica nanoparticles to create a supported lipid bilayer (SLB). The pro-tocells are completed by modification of the SLB with multiple copies of a targeting peptide, an endosomolytic peptide and PEG. Compared to ‘liposome-only’ nano-carriers, the protocells have improved capacity, selectivity, and stability, enabling tar-geted delivery and controlled release of high concentrations of multicomponent cargos (chemotherapeutic drugs, siRNA, dsDNA, toxins, etc.) within cancer cells. Furthermore, owing to the substrate–membrane adhesion energy, the core suppresses large-scale membrane bilayer fluctuations, resulting in greater stability than unsupported liposomal bilayers. The nanoporous support also results in enhanced lateral bilayer fluidity compared with that of either liposomes or SLBs formed on non-porous par-ticles. The enhanced fluidity and stability of the SLB enables dy-namic reconfiguration of the surface allowing membrane bound ligands to engage in complex multivalent interactions with the target cell. The synergistic combination of materials and bio-physical properties organized over several hierarchical length scales enables high delivery efficiency and enhanced targeting specificity with a minimal number of targeting ligands, features crucial to maximizing specific binding, minimizing nonspecific binding, reducing dosage, and mitigating immunogenicity. C. Jeffrey Brinker was born in Easton, Pennsylvania and attended Rutgers University where he received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in ceramic science and engineering. Dr. Brinker joined Sandia National Laboratories as a Member of the Technical Staff in 1979. He was promoted to Distinguished Member of the Tech-nical Staff at SNL and appointed Distinguished National Labora-tory Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the University of New Mexico in 1991. Since 1999, he has been jointly employed at SNL where he is the sole Sandia Fellow

and at UNM where he is Distinguished and Regent’s Professor of Chemical and Nu-clear Engineering with co-appointments in the Departments of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology and the UNM Cancer Cen-ter. Dr. Brinker has been recognized nationally and internation-ally for his work in sol-gel processing (the fabrication of nano-scale materials from soluble molecular precursors) and its exten-sion to self-assembly of porous and composite nanostructures, and recently novel types of biotic/abiotic materials and inter-faces, including porous nanoparticle supported lipid bilayers used as nanocarriers. His awards include R&D100 Awards in 1996, 2007, 2008 and 2011, the American Chemical Society’s Ralph K. Iler Award in the Chemistry of Colloidal Materials, five Department of Energy Basic Energy Sciences Awards, the DOE Ernest O. Lawrence Memorial Award in Materials Science, and the Materials Research Society (MRS) 2003 Medal. In February 2002 he was elected into the National Academy of Engineering, and in 2009 he was elected Fellow of MRS. Join us on Wednesday, May 9th to learn more about Dr. Brinker’s exciting research.

Cont. from pg. 2 Membership Directory Advertising I am working on updating a new directory for 2011

-2012. The cost for a full page ad (4" wide x 6"

long) is $150, for a half page ad (4" w x 3"L)

$75. Again, there will be a cap placed on the num-

ber of ads ran in the Directory and after May 31st

all ads will be placed on a first come first served

basis. Please let me know what you would like to

do on or before Thursday, May 31st. To sub-

mit your ad copy just e-mail it to Joanna as a jpeg

file. You will be billed in July.

NorthWind Advertising The new Rotary year is around the corner. That means

it’s time to place your ad. All ads need to be submitted electronically to Joanna as a jpeg file.

Business Card Ad (2” tall x 3” wide) $150/year or

$40/quarter Quarter Page Ads can be run by the quarter only for

$75/quarter

There will be a cap placed on the number of ads run in

the NorthWind. All advertising will be placed on a first come first served basis. If interested, submit your ad to

Joanna, not an e-mail saying you want an ad. Deadline to submit NorthWind ads is June 1. You will be billed in July.

Don’t forget that you can also run a classified ad for

only $10 an issue. This is a great way to promote your favorite non-profit’s fundraiser or to let everyone know

about an upcoming art event or yard sale!

Thank you.

Don’t METH With Us Del Norte Rotary President, Bill Michael and The Don’t Meth With Us Committee would like to thank the members who have already donated to the "Don't Meth With Us" fund. Members and anyone inter-ested will have two ways to donate; they will be able to write a check payable to: Del Norte Rotary DMWU, & mail to PO Box 3951; Albuquerque, NM 87190 or they will be able to donate through a 501c3, make checks payable to: APSEF Albuquerque Public School Education Foundation). Stay tuned for more develop-ing information about this exciting program, and again, thank you for helping area students in under-standing the danger of using drugs.
