The novel that I learnt in Form Five is ‘The Curse’ written by Lee Su Ann. There are many

places or settings involved in this novel but today I am going to write about the physical

setting o the novel. There are two main physical settings in this novel. The story started with

the setting in London when we were introduced to the main character! A"reen Saleh.

#asically! the readers are introduced to the university college where A"reen was pursuing an

undergraduate course. The readers are given more inormation that A"reen was going to sitor her e$ams soon but she had to ly bac% to &alaysia due to her sister! &adhuri’s death.

'e$t! we are brought to e$perience the lie o the university college when A"reen had to wal%

through the college’s residential hall. (ere! A"reen’s thoughts lew bac% when she recalled

her two years o student e$periences. She had many sweet e$periences in her lie as a student.

She also met many new riends o various races here and she was reluctant to go bac% to

&alaysia even or a while. The second physical setting is when we are ta%en to )LIA *)uala

Lumpur International Airport+. (ere! A"reen had to wait or two hours beore she could

board a connecting light to ,ulau Lang%awi! her hometown. -hen A"reen was recalling her

old times with her sister! &adhuri! the readers are brought to Lang%awi International

Airport. A"reen meets her oster parents! atin Shariah and atu% /ul%ili who came toreceive her at the airport. Last but not least! we are brought together with A"reen to ,ulau

Lang%awi and a little village. In this beautiul! small village! we are introduced to A"reen’s

home where she had bitter sweet memories or A"reen when she remembers about her

sister. 'e$t! the village itsel was the place where all the drama ta%es place! both in the past

and present.

her rom entering 'e%’s house. Although she is outnumbered! she dares to ace ,uan

'ormala’s horde to protect 'e%’s house rom them. &oreover! she conronts a group o men

led by Asra who goes to the 3ld lady’s house to see% revenge ater 'e% dies as they believe

the 3ld lady has poisoned 'e%. It is a dog@eat@dog world out there and we must be brave andcourageous to overcome our daily obstacles and stand or our own rights. -e should not be

intimidated by our ear and we must be li%e A"reen in order to survive the world. The second

e$emplary ?ualities o A"reen is that she portrays resilience throughout the story and she

constantly ights or what she believes in. This can be seen when A"reen does not give up and

is determine and resilience to see% the truth o &adhuri’s death even though others do not

want to tell her the truth. She as%s Asra and The 3ld Lady about &adhuri’s death and slowly

gather evidences and inally she %nows the truth about &adhuri’s %illing. In her village! a

woman should be conservative and well mannered but A"reen is a contrast to that and thus

she is hated but she ignores the villagers’ perception o her! as she believes that women have

their own rights. This can be seen as she beriends Asra and 5oins the boys’ hoc%ey team andsimilarly ma%es The 3ld Lady her best riend. In this cruel world! we must stand or our own

right and ight or what we believe in. -e must ollow A"reen’s resilience to ma%e this world a

‘&other’s Love’ The novel ‘The Curse’ by Lee Su Ann touches on many values that are useul

in our daily lives. As or me! I am touched with the value o mother’s love in this novel.

A"reen’s mother is orever seen tal%ing nonsense since her Al"heimer’s disease was becoming

worse. She was not given a name in this novel but always reerred to as ‘&a%’. A"reen elt

guilty because she was the one who was responsible or her mother to loose one o her leg.

2ven though! we %now that A"reen admitted leaving the gate o the arm open but actually

she was only helping &ohd Asra rom being blamed. ue to her act! her parents met with an

accident when her ather’s motorcycle hit the bull. A"reen’s mother never hated A"reen or

what had happened and she always loved A"reen. She even told A"reen that it was not her

ault that she lost her leg in the accident. This proves that ‘&a%’ was never angry towards

A"reen and she accepts what happened to her as aith. This shows the true love that a mother

has or her child even though she is in pain. Another incident that showed how true a

mother’s love is when &adhuri’s mother! the mad lady who strolled in the village and always

watched over her daughter. 2ven though &adhuri was raised by 2nci% Saleh and his wie

rom a baby! the mad lady always %ept hersel close to &adhuri. She used to watch &adhuriand A"reen when they come bac% rom school. This shows that she still loved her daughter

even though she gave in when her baby was lost. She %new she could not raise &adhuri in a

proper way so she 5ust %ept ?uite when 2nci% Saleh too% the baby and decided to raise the

child. #ut as a mother! she still loved &adhuri and always sees how her daughter is living

with her oster parents rom ar. This is what we call mother’s love. 2ven i the child is not

with the real mother but she always pray or her child to lead a happy lie and that is why she

too% revenge against 2nci% Saleh who %illed &adhuri. From these two mothers! the readers

are shown the value o love that a mother has or a child. #oth mothers in this novel are not

normal in certain ways but their love or their children did not ade but they loved their

ones were hidden within him. Firstly! 2nci% Saleh is very hot@tempered. As apoor armer in a remote village in ,ulau Lang%awi! 2nci% Saleh is a strong man as he had

hard physi?ue! huge ists and o course he is very hard@wor%ing man. (e wor%ed all the time

on the arm to earn a living and his daughters always %now him as a very hot@tempered man.

-e can see this when he ordered A"reen to ta%e her mother home when she too% her mother

to the cemetery to visit &adhuri’s graveyard. 2nci% Saleh was very angry because A"reen

too% her sic%ly mother there I thin% he should have understood the situation and ace the

act that both o the ladies came to pay respect to &adhuri. (e should not shout at them

because they are also sad about &adhuri’s death even though his wie doesn’t %now or reali"e

the act that &adhuri was dead. (ere! I would strongly say that 2nci% Saleh portrayed the

negative ?uality to the readers. Secondly! I see 2nci% Saleh as a very 5udgmental and biasedperson. (e loves &adhuri as his eldest daughter because she is ull o good ?ualities whereas

he is always stern and angry towards A"reen. Actually! 2nci% Saleh oten mis5udges A"reen

because he sees himsel in her. This is because A"reen reminds him o himsel who also used

to be outspo%en and hot@tempered when he was young and he still is the same until now. I

always see that 2nci% Saleh punishes A"reen wrongly or too severely until he used to cane her

even when she was small. All these prove that 2nci% Saleh is a very 5udgmental and biased

person and o course I would not be li%e him. Finally! I also ind 2nci% Saleh is too mean in

his traditional ways by being strict to his children. The incident where he grabbed A"reen and

led her out o &adhuri’s room in anger proves how strict he was towards A"reen. (e even

raised his ist to punch A"reen when she argued with him. #ut! to avoid punching her! he

ordered A"reen to go to the dining room and attend to her mother. There was even a situation

where A"reen and 2nci% Saleh ate their dinner in complete silence. All these proves that

counsellor despite ignoring the warnings and pre5udices o the villagers. A"reen was

or &adhuri’s murder and the culprit. -hen A"reen conronts her ather! 2nci% Saleh

deiantly conesses that he had accidentally murdered &adhuri ater learning that &adhuri! a

married woman! commits an adultery when she secretly sees another man. It is probably out

o shame! the angry ather who is embarrassed o &adhuri’s unethical behaviour which he

thin%s has brought shame to the amily! conronts &adhuri and during the struggle! &adhuri

alls to the ground and her head %noc%s over the late$ cup which stains her clothes. A

distraught A"reen lees ater hearing the shoc%ing news while 2nci% Saleh comes ace@to@ace

with the shadowy woman &adhuri’s mother who nears him with a parang in her hand.

sad that ,uan Fatihah is a victim o her own belie in the supernatural. ,rior to the encounter

with the ,ontiana%! she has gone to see% out the bomoh to get a charm to win bac% her

can understand her pain o insecurity as she loo%s at the mirror each day and sees her aging

chin.= -hich man can still stay in love with a ace li%e that8 (er insensitive husband has

spurned her and laughs at her insecurities. (er declining beauty has caused her to eel envy
