As we embark on this new year, I want to take a moment to thank all of you – members, staff, family and other loved ones who are part

of our King community – for your perseverance in 2020. Faced with an unimaginable challenge, we buckled down and, together, got through a very difficult year.

Our frontline workers – nurses, CNAs, housekeepers, nutrition services, and more – have continued to battle COVID-19. And while our collective hearts broke when we lost members of our community to this terrible virus, you all kept up the good fight to keep so many safe and healthy. Our community members and families have also done their part. Thank you for being so patient with us and putting health and safety first. I am overwhelmingly proud of and deeply thankful for all of you. What a year 2020 has been, but watching all of you has given me so much hope.

While things may never be back to “normal,” I feel positive about the future and the steps we are taking as we begin vaccinations at our veterans homes. As you are aware, this month employees and members at King received their first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine from our pharmacy partner. We will beat back this virus, and I look forward to brighter days.

Let us embrace 2021 and look forward to the opportunities that await with a renewed appreciation for each other and our health. In the meantime, please do not let down your guard. I am optimistic that one day in the near future we will be able to look back on 2020 with our friends and family by our sides, and we will once again be able to share meals, share a hug with our loved ones, and gather with our communities without fear.

I have been moved from 3rd floor in Ainsworth Hall to 2nd floor in Stordock Hall. First, they moved me to one room then shortly later they moved me to another in a segregated section this time.

It appears that they have temporarily moved me to Stordock Hall because I am dealing with a ferocious cough which makes them think I might have COVID.

I am finally settled in a room in a long hallway. It is so nice to have some peace and quite. Day by day I relax and enjoy the solitude-all alone and I like this!

I now have time to read my book or Our Daily Bread, when I want to read. My oldest daughter thought I would like if she read a good book to me. We decided to try it. I LIKE IT! So, every day she calls when she has time to read to me for a bit, as interruptions determine how much time we have.

It has been rather pleasant here at Stordock Hall. Peace and quiet allows me to choose what I want to do. No disagreements, no arguments, free time which is very nice.

I found out that I will be in Stordock Hall until the 15th! My cough has let up again like it usually does. No w there is barely any noise at all of a cough or cold. And NO COVID!!! Feels great not to be dealing with any kind of problem. It’s wonderful!

It seems that there are some folks who are being rather disagreeable about being here in Stordock Hall, and I don’t understand why. My room is clean and comfortable, we each have our own bathroom, our own room, and help if we need it. What more do we need? They feed us; help us; they provide for us. Who needs more than that?

WISCONSIN VETERANS HOME AT KINGChaplain’s Column

Whenever change takes place, I am reminded that change is inevitable and, in this life, there is nothing that remains the same. In the book of Ecclesiastes chapter three (3) we are reminded

that everything has a season. Here are the words as expressed by Solomon:

To everything there is a season,A time for every purpose under heaven (Ecclesiastics 3:1 NKJV)

As we look at these words of wisdom, we discover that change takes place due to the season or timing that is part of life and secondly that change has a purpose. Mind you, as we are going through change, we may not always accept the timing nor can we always understand the purpose. Yet, as Christian we must live by faith and know that all things will work together for the good (Romans 8:28 NKJV).

Today, I want to announce that as of January 1, 2021 I will be transitioning in life as I leave my regular LTE duties at King. I have enjoyed many years of serving here at King and have learned much from everyone here. During my season here at King I have come to respect on a higher level those that have served our country and it has deepened my honor for America’s heroes!

The staff here at King are an amazing group of people who engage in their responsibilities with a genuine love for people and the authenticity of care they deliver has always impressed me. I have worked with some of the most caring and amazing group of people. Just know that the purpose behind my leaving is one that, currently in my life, is for the betterment of my family as well to the benefit of my professional life. The timing is from God and I needed (although it was tough for me) to accept that.

It’s quiet here in Stordock Hall which is very nice. Just decided what I want to read and start enjoying. No reason to complain because everything is fine.

The 15th has finally arrived! Good news I am finally going back home to my one room resting place in Ainsworth Hall. It’s not as peaceful and quiet here but it’s home! That is really what counts, don’t you think? The “welcome homes” I received were many and happy. That’s enough! That’s what makes it home. Thank you, dear folks!

This Christmas season has been amazing for me so far! It’s even more unusual than usual. I’ve been so blessed! Folks have been so kind. So far, there have been a few letters from around the state. The one from De Pere was definitely one of the sweetest and kindest. It would be lovely to meet some of these folks in person.

There have been several items found in our doorways, etc. Things that show me that many people are thinking of me. These thoughtful little items show me all over again that our Lord is thinking of us all again! And I want to give a very important “Thank You” from the bottom of my heart and blessings back to all those who blessed me so richly. Also, I hope that each of you also enjoyed a wonderful, blessed Christmas! Blessings on you all for the New Year 2021!

As we look out into the world today so much has changed. It appears that more changes will take place. Some good and some changes will challenge us. It is how we respond to change that will determine how well we will do with the changes that take place. May I encourage you to consider three things:

First, tell yourself that change is inevitable. As you do this, seek God’s understanding to know how to accept and navigate through the change. See change as an opportunity to grow as a person and in the likeness of Christ (2 Corinthians 2:18 NKKV). The key in this is seeking the presence of the Holy Spirit to lead and guide you in this.

Secondly, ask God to help you do His will through the changes that take place. Often times we seek to have our own way or come up with our own plans and even intellect to address issues that come our way. I have learned that my first response should be that of prayer. We are told in the book of Jeremiah 33:3:

“Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.”

God has a word for us in times of change to address matters in a way that is for His glory and for our benefit; so, seek Him as He has promised to show us great and mighty things that we do not even at this time know!

Lastly, ask yourself what is it that God is trying to change in me that I need to address in His strength or address in my life that needs to change. As stated earlier, God’s ultimate desire for us is to reproduce our character so it reflects the character of His Son. Paul expressed that God has predestined us to be conformed to the image of His Son (Romans 8:29 NKJV).

To everything there is a season. My season of change in a new direction has come. Yours has too. You just have to ask God to help you see it and then give you His grace to pursue it. May the gracious God of heaven help us as we enter this new year of 2021 with courage to embrace the changes that come our way and embrace each transition on the wisdom and power of His grace!

I want to thank each one of the members here at King as well as the staff for being a part of my life and I know we will see each other somewhere on the continued journey of life.

The Library has added several books to its permanent collection. The following are some of those books.

WISCONSIN VETERANS HOME AT KING Library News

Jane Steele by Lyndsay Faye A sensitive orphan, Jane Steele suffers first at the hands of her spiteful aunt and predatory cousin, then at a grim school where she fights for her very life until she escapes to London, leaving the corpses of her tormentors behind her. After years of hiding from the law while penning macabre “last confessions” of the recently hanged, Jane thrills at discovering an advertisement. Her aunt has died and her childhood home has a new master: Mr. Charles Thornfield, who seeks a governess for the nine-year-old ward in his care. Burning to know whether she is in fact the rightful heir, Jane takes the position incognita, and learns that Highgate House is full of marvelously strange new residents – the fascinating but caustic Mr. Thornfield, an army doctor returned from the Sikh Wars, and the gracious Sikh butler Mr. Sardar Singh, whose connection with Mr. Thornfield appears far more complicated and darker than they pretend. As Jane catches ominous glimpses of the pair’s violent history and falls in love with the gruffly tragic Mr. Thornfield, she faces a terrible dilemma: can she possess him – body, soul, and secrets – without revealing her own murderous past?

The Midnight Line by Lee Child Reacher takes a stroll through a small Wisconsin town and sees a class ring in a pawn shop window: West Point 2005. A tough year to graduate: Iraq, then Afghanistan. The ring is tiny, for a woman, and it has her initials engraved on the inside. Reacher wonders what unlucky circumstance made her give up something she earned over four hard years. He decides to find out. And find the woman. And return her ring. Why not?

So begins a harrowing journey that takes Reacher through the upper Midwest, from a lowlife bar on the sad side of small town to a dirt-blown crossroads in the middle of nowhere, encountering bikers, cops, crooks, muscle, and a missing persons PI who wears a suit and a tie in the Wyoming wilderness.

The deeper Reacher digs, and the more he learns, the more dangerous the terrain becomes. Turns out the ring was just a small link in a far darker chain. Powerful forces are guarding a vast criminal enterprise. Some lines should never be crossed. But then, neither should Reacher.

The Gone World by Tom Sweterlitsch Shannon Moss is part of a clandestine division within the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. In Western Pennsylvania, 1997, she is assigned to solve the murder of a Navy SEAL’s family--and to locate his teenage daughter, who has disappeared. Though she can’t share the information with conventional law enforcement, Moss discovers that the missing SEAL was an astronaut aboard the spaceship U.S.S. Libra--a ship assumed lost to the darkest currents of Deep Time. Moss knows first-hand the mental trauma of time-travel and believes the SEAL’s experience with the future has triggered this violence. Determined to find the missing girl and driven by a troubling connection from her own past, Moss travels ahead in time to explore possible versions of the future, seeking evidence or insight that will crack the present-day case. To her horror, the future reveals that it’s not only the fate of a family that hinges on her work, for what she witnesses rising over time’s horizon and hurtling toward the present is the Terminus: the terrifying and cataclysmic end of humanity itself.
