“Be joyful always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus”…I Thessalonians 5:16-18

Hear Ye, Hear Ye! Now is the time to trim the turkey, shuck the corn, bake the pumpkin pies, and buy a pair of pants one size larger than currently in your closet.

Ah, just imagine the sights, the smells, the aching bellies begging to be un-encumbered by belts! Is there any greater joy than a full stomach with gravy as an acceptable beverage?! But I digress…

What does this day called Thanksgiving mean to you and yours? In 2005, Denise and I held our 1st Thanksgiving in what was our new home. Both sides of the family arrived for our wonderful feast. Our home was filled to the brim with laughter and love. (Hey, the Bengal’s even won on that day!)

I remember being filled with pride as I gathered our extended family around the dining table to pray, but first I offered a toast. Essentially what I said was that our home had been the fulfillment of a dream long shared by Denise and I. “Last Christmas, Denise, I bought you a door knocker with our surname, and it came with a promise…next year, I will buy you the house to go with it.” It was a wonderfully emotional moment for the two of us, considering that we had recently moved from a mouse infested parsonage…I remember it like it was yesterday.

My point is simple: Thanksgiving to me means seeing the fulfillment of promise made. My prayer that day of Thanksgiving was most about thanking God for his faithfulness. That day we feasted not only on turkey with all the trimmings, but we feasted upon the faithfulness of God. May it always be so with us all. May the love of Christ fill your hearts this holiday and bring you peace, (with a full stomach).

Happy Thanksgiving Bro. David

Attached to the back of this Newsletter will be a copy of a monthly calendar. Please place the sheet on your refrigerator for a reminder of upcoming events.

Oakland is once again participating in the Operation

Christmas Child Shoebox Ministry. The collection

week is November 17-24th so shoeboxes

need to be brought to church no later

than Sunday Nov. 16th. David and Lori

Graham and their family have

purchased school supplies for some

boxes and are bringing them to church for everyone’s

use. Please pray about filling one (or more) boxes this

year. The goal for the Alexandria is 15,000 shoeboxes

this year. Oakland collected 74 boxes last year. Maybe

we can add to that number for 2008.

The “Do’s & Don’ts” of packing the boxes are inside the

pamphlet with the labels. There were no specific

instructions this year regarding the opening of

packages, so use your own discretion about your box.

They only said “no liquids & no chocolate”. The cost of

shipping remains $7.00 this year. Please fill out the

information on the envelope provided in the pamphlet

and place inside your shoebox. If this cost is a problem

for you, don’t worry about it. The church has been kind

enough to say they will cover any shipping cost for you.

Thank you for helping these children around the world.

God Bless You!

Janet May

*Birdhouses: There have been MANY birdhouses that have been finished and sold. If you are still interested in doing any more birdhouses please see Sharon Demoss or Joyce Glahn. Any help is appreciated.

Sunday evening Nov. 30th we will be having a service “Hanging of the Greens” at 7:00 PM.

The church is sending a check for $2500.00 to the soup kitchen at Grace UMC in Covington, on behalf of the money collected from the birdhouses. The last time that Joyce Glahn and Mary Jo Nelson went down there, they found that the pantry was out of food. They made the decision to get a check to them as soon as possible to restock the pantry. Thanks for all

your help.

*Spaghetti Dinner: At the Alexandria Masonic Lodge Saturday November 8th

*Accomplishments:

We have started a section in the Newsletter where we will recognize people for any accomplishments they have done. You can put in whatever you would like. Examples: something in school, sports, work, church, community, etc.

*Oakland UMC received a package in the mail from the Kentucky United Methodist Homes for Children & Youth.

We were very pleased when we opened it to learn that Oakland has received 2 awards from the children's home for

2007. The awards are:

1. 2nd Largest Overall Giver in the Covington District Kentucky Conference in 2007 ($13,689.36)

2. 2nd Largest Per Person Giver in the Covington District Kentucky

Conference in 2007 ($152.10 per person)

This is amazing to us considering the size of some of the churches in the Covington District. Oakland truly is a

giving congregation. In case you don't realize this...every 5th Sunday 1/2 of our regular offering is sent to the

children's home. We normally receive an acknowledgement of our gift that includes a letter telling about one of the

children. Watch the bulletin board in the vestibule and read these wonderful stories, and know that you are

personally helping to meet the needs of these precious young folks!

*Congratulations to Miranda Kopp whose soccer team “NKSA Rowdies” won the Forest Park Star

Invitational Tournament the weekend of Oct. 25th

& 26th

, 2008. The team won all 4 games in a shut out.

Also congratulations to Miranda who made the middle school varsity basketball team.

*Congratulations to Don Mullins who made it through another work week.

Please let me know of any accomplishments you would like to add before next month’s Newsletter.
