From Page 1: Red Canyon Trail is spectacularly scenic with a moderated difficulty rating. Begin-
ning from I-10 at the Chiriaco Summit exit near the George S. Patton Memorial Museum, a large part of it runs
above the Red Canyon.
At first the trail is the paved Pinto Road which then moves to a sandy trail along the Maniobra Valley. It is easy to
drive along this path until you encounter the numerous small washes and the gully nearer to the Red Canyon.
From this section the trail is a vehicle corridor running through the Orocopia Mountains Wilderness. You will en-
joy many scenic views within the Red Canyon as you move towards the Salt Creek. Be careful as you drive through
as the terrain gets uneven and narrow at places with some dangerous drops and blind crests as well. As you move to
the end near Salt Creek Wash the trail gently descends.
We will enter Red Canyon from I-10 to Bradshaw Trail (12 miles) and explore the Amy Wash Trail (10 miles) loop
back to Bradshaw Trail past the Eagle Mt. RR trestle and return via the Goodwin Trail which has interesting slot
canyons. We will take a short hike to explore the slot canyons if time permits.
Bring water and lunch and $ for rideshare.
Passengers are welcome and will be accommodated upon space available based on space provided by participating
drivers. RSVP not required but appreciated.

Hideout Canyon 4x4 Off Road Adventure Old Dale Mining District 4x4

Requirements: 4 WD with high clearance, off road tires, difficulty (moderate) 6 at a few spots.
Trail communication: CB channel 20, Ham radio: 146.550 MHz.
Points of Interest: Hideout Mine, Supply Mine, Ivanhoe Mine, and Ironage Mine, and desert wild-
flowers.
Our adventure will begin a few miles past Twenty Nine Palms as we retraced the actions of the
1979 kidnapping of Palm Springs socialite Elaine Chaddick. Based on the book, Night of the Full
Moon, we will locate the money drop location, the area of the chase and fatal shooting of the kid-
napper. We will also visit the hideout at the mine audit where Elaine Chaddick was held for 4
days in the desert near the Gold Crown Road. We will take the spur trail up to Ivanhoe Mine and
exit via Ironage Mine.
Meet at PetsMart parking lot Ramon/Crossley at 8:30 AM with full tank gas. Bring lunch and water.
We will stop in Twentynine Palms for fuel and refreshments
Passengers are welcome and will be accommodated upon space available based on space pro-
vided by participating drivers. Sharing of fuel cost is appreciated.

Phase II: April 28-29 at Malibu Creek State Park.
Plan ahead for our Annual
Joshua Tree National Park at
Cottonwoods Campsite
May 2-May 4th, 2012 led by
John Niedzwiedz
This is a camping event Wednesday through Friday in Joshua Tree National Park (JTNP). JTNP is
nearly 800,000 acres where two desert (the Colorado and the Mojave) ecosystems come together within
the park. There are lots of things to do and see in the park!
We have reserved Cottonwood Group Site # 3 which can accommodate 25 tents. It is a bit basic and
barren, but does have running water, flush toilets, 5 shaded awnings with 2 or 3 picnic tables each and
fire pits, no showers. We are limited to only 15 parking spaces so carpooling is STRONGLY recom-
mended. A limited amount of overflow parking is available, but on a first-come, first serve basis.
