JOINT CHAIRMAN...CHRIS DAYNESWelcome back to the Goldstar Ground for todays FA Trophy tie versus Great Wakering Rovers. We wish a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Rovers and to todays Match Officials. I would need a programme column the size of the yellow pages to go over everything that has happened since our last competitive home fixture, that epic 3-3 draw with Canvey Island way back in March. Many of the resultant events have been well documented, but I must begin with a tribute to our outgoing Chairman - Andy Wilding. Andy created a legacy that will long live on at the Club and Matt Hope, Andy Clarke and Myself will work tirelessly to continue the work and the progress that went on before us. Back to Covid, and all I can say is we have made it through the biggest challenge this club, and football in general has ever faced and we are incredibly proud of every player, manager, coach, staff member, sponsor, volunteer and supporter that has come together to make it possible. As I write these notes, it seems the game we love at this level is teetering on the brink of the reintroduction of tougher restrictions.

To get through another period of lockdown at the Club would be twice as difficult as the previous occasion. There are a lot of things we can’t control when it comes to the pandemic, but what we can do is stick rigidly to the rules and protocols that have been put in place to give us the best possible chance of football continuing. Whether we agree with all the measures or not, they are there to protect us, and the game, and it is in all our power to do our bit.

So please, we want you to enjoy being back supporting the Seasiders, but lets remember the frustration, disappointment, physical, mental and financial challenges the last stoppage had on us all, and use that as an incentive to do the right thing. I must say the Management team have done a sterling job in strengthening the squad and although injuries are taking their

toll at the moment, I’m convinced we are in for an entertaining and successful campaign ahead, and judging by the record season ticket sales... so are you! Enjoy the match, give the side your superb backing as always, and hopefully we’ll witness a positive result to see us through to the next stage of the competition. We look forward to seeing you all back here on Tuesday evening when we welcome our old Friends and rivals in AFC Sudbury to the seaside.

FROM THE DUGOUTSTUART BOARDLEYWow, well I suppose that is not really the right word, but what an incredibly frustrating last six months we have had. Firstly, I hope that you and your families have remained well throughout this difficult time and I cannot begin to explain how pleased we are to be back doing what we love at Dellwood. I really have no idea how long this will last as Covid-19 cases continue to rise, but we will make the most of football whilst its here and hopefully it can continue, because for many of us it has formed such a significant part of our lives growing up and into adulthood – fingers crossed hey! So much to tell you... We have now been back in training since the start of July so its been a long build up. We have strengthened the squad enormously in my opinion, and I think many of you are going to enjoy watching and supporting the new lads that we have

brought into the Club over the coming months and hopefully years. We have first and foremost signed good footballers, and I hear you ask “well what else is there to consider?”, but just as important to us is the characters we are bringing in. To be a successful team the dressing room has to have a real togetherness and bringing good people to this football club that are here for the right reasons is paramount to both Andy and I, as well as the Senior figures at the Club. We hope to provide you with not only a good footballing team, but equally as important, a group of decent

young men who will give their all for the Club and you will feel proud to come and support each week. We have had a very disjointed pre-season with many injuries which hasn’t yielded the consistency in selection we would have wanted. It seems to have been very common and must be linked to the long break we all had from competitive sport, with even the professional teams in the football league calculating an average of nearly 30% more injuries this year than last. We hope to be bucking that trend now with many of the players now returning to fitness, and hope to be back at full strength very soon.

The support I have witnessed from all the supporters of the Football Club through these difficult times has been truly touching and we just urge you to keep coming along, watching, supporting and being a part of this special Club.

We will do everything we can to entertain you this year, I’m sure there will be many ups and also downs but generally as we all know, it’s never normally dull at Dellwood!

Enjoy the game and keep safe.Boards

You have to love a bit of history – well, I do, and our visitors today have got a

bit of history… not necessarily football, although of course they have that too. Now, not many people know this, but according to the medieval books I read (constantly), Great Wakering was the site of a monastery in the 7th century… that’s AD of course, not BC!

Two Christian cousins of King Ecgberht of Kent, Aethelred and Aethelberht, were a couple of lads, which wasn’t always a good thing to be - and they got themselves into a bit of bother that ended with them being murdered at Eastry, a royal dwelling in the (then) Kingdom of Kent. I’m not sure of the date, but it was somewhere between 664 & 673 AD, during the reign of King Ecgberht (remember him?) Some say it was by a miracle - others say it was lack of direction - that they weren’t buried at Canterbury and were taken instead to an existing monastery in Wakering in the Kingdom of Essex, completely the opposite direction to Canterbury! They were enshrined there as saints but Ecgberht’s brother and successor, King Hlothhere of Kent is said by William of Malmesbury to have ridiculed the idea of their sanctity. Like I said, not many people know that - and I have absolutely no idea whatsoever why our visitors wear Green & White! In other news … We have met before in

cup competition, back in 2001 - the season after Felixstowe Town & Walton United merged. We were both given byes to the FA Vase 2nd Qualifying Round and met here, at the then Town Ground, where Gt Wakering won 3-1. Our visitors went on to reach the 5th Round where they met and lost to AFC Sudbury.

Why do Rovers wear green & white?

IMPORTANT INFORMATION - IMPORTANT INFORMATION

IMPORTANT INFORMATION - IMPORTANT INFORMATION

At the moment there is no word on football, or spectators at our level being affected by the restrictions announced today (Tuesday 22nd September). Hopefully this will remain the case!

There are a few areas where we will be affected and these are detailed below and in our updated Covid Risk Assessment and protocols that will be added to the website.

ClubhouseWe will have to close at 10pm starting on Thursday 24th September, mainly affecting midweek match nights. Last orders will be at 9.30pm.

The nature of our clubhouse and bar makes it impossible to implement table service, as is now mandatory. Therefore the function room will be completely closed and bar service will be from a table in the doorway, with a member of staff collecting drinks from the bar.

ToiletsWith the function room closed, the building will be reconfigured to allow for a new access to the lobby toilets through the hospitality door. This will be clearly signposted. Matchday corridor toilets will still be available as normal.

MasksAll staff will now wear masks or visors at all times. Although not mandatory within the ground, we are now encouraging all visitors and supporters to wear a face covering when in the ground. Many other clubs are doing the same.

Test and TraceWe have been instructed by the FA to use the official NHS test & Trace QR code, replacing our evePASS app. This comes into effect on Thursday 24th September and posters will be at all entry and service points.

Football, and supporters at our level is on a knife edge at the moment. There are many things we cannot control with the pandemic, but what we can do is stick rigidly to the rules and protocols that have been put in place to minimise the risk to us all. If we all do our bit and follow the rules we stand a much better chance of football being allowed to continue in front of spectators.

We hope to see you all here on Saturday for the start of our FA Trophy campaign.

Come on you Seasiders!!

OUR SQUAD ...THE SEASIDERS

Callum joined the club in the summer from Stowmarket Town. He started his career at Colchester United before playing for Wroxham, AFC Sudbury and spent time on loan at Brantham Athletic last season.

With over 300 appearances for the club ‘Denzil’ is a powerful centre back with a no nonsense approach to the game. Great in the air and a strong tackler. A very popular member of the squad, loved by the fans and swept the floor winning all 3 senior player awards in 2019.

Stuart joined the club for his second spell in the summer of 2014 from Lowestoft Town. Previous clubs include Chelmsford City and AFC Sudbury. Stuart spent 10 years at Ipswich Town, winning the FA Youth Cup in 2005. Stuart has a sweet left foot and a great work ethic.

Josh joined the club from AFC Sudbury four seasons ago. Comfortable on the ball, strong in the air, Josh likes to chip in with his share of the goals and was recently announced as the new club captain.

Callum is in his second spell at the club having re-joined in late 2018. An attacking full back with one of the best ball deliveries in non-league football. Callum has plenty of experience from his time at Ipswich U18s, Stoke City U21s and Notts County.

‘Milo’ spent the 2014/15 season with Whitton United returning to the Seasiders where he learnt his trade. There has never been any doubt in his natural football ability but Milo has now become one of the most prolific goal scorers the club has ever had.

Joining the Seasiders from the SIL in 2015/16, ‘Jamma’ soon established himself as a first team regular becoming an integral part of the squad. A technically talented footballer and very comfortable on the ball.

Curtis joined this summer from Stanway Rovers and has a fine Isthmian league pedigree. He started his career with AFC Sudbury before moving on to Lowestoft Town. Curtis signed for then EFL club Yeovil Town and spent time at Cambridge United, AFC Wimbledon, Macclesfield Town and Maldon & Tiptree.

Armani played for Felixstowe & Walton back in 2016 before moving on to Leiston Town and then Lowestoft where he helped them avoid relegation in the 2018/19 season. Armani has also had spells at Needham Market and brings with him plenty of experience playing at step 3 level.

Leon signed for the club during the summer and is another vastly experienced player at step 3 and 4 level. Previous clubs include Leiston, Bury Town, Hadleigh Utd and Stowmarket Town. Leon is very versatile but is predominantly a dynamic midfield player.

Sam originally joined on loan from Stowmarket Town midway through last season. He has previously played at a higher level for Lowestoft Town, Bury Town and Needham Market. Sam suffered with injuries last season but Boards and Crumpy had seen enough to make his signing a must.

George signed at the same time as Sam Nunn, also from Stowmarket Town and has previously played for Ipswich Town, AFC Sudbury, Needham Market, Brightlingsea Regent and Brantham Athletic. George is a powerful player with the speed to match.

Ollie made a dramatic impact when he joined the club in November 2019, signing from Mildenhall Town. “Canfs” burst onto the scene scoring 9 goals in 13 games. The fans love his non-stop running and desire to cause defensive headaches for the opposition.

The club was formed in 1919 by soldiers demobbed after World War I and finding employment in the local brickfields. Not much in memory remains of the early years of the club although the club do pose some wonderful pictures from around that period. Rovers first played in one of Southend’s oldest leagues, the Southend & District League, where they stayed until 1982. Rovers were the leagues most dominant clubs, especially in the 1960s and 1970s and to this day remain so on record. The switch in 1982 saw the club move to the newly formed Southend & District Alliance Football League, but sadly this league folded in 1989 leaving Rovers with a decision to move back to the Southend & District League or take a step up in standard. With what most Rovers feel to be the best squad amassed by a manager, in this case Eddie Nash, Rovers took the decision to step up to intermediate level and joined the Essex Intermediate League. Rovers remained in the Essex Intermediate League for three seasons, winning the championships of Divisions Three and Two in successive seasons. After the latter, Rovers successfully applied to join the Essex Senior League and found themselves in Step 5 of the Non-League pyramid, which for a village club was a tremendous feat. In the 1994-1995 season Rovers narrowly beat Sawbridgeworth Town FC for the Essex Senior League title. Rovers had collected 71 points for the season and lost just three times although the title win was only won on goal

THE OTHER SIDE ...GREAT WAKERING ROVERS

difference (18). During that season Rovers forward Paul Flack scored 28 goals, which included a haul of 4 goals away at Eton Manor as Rovers celebrated a 9-0 victory. Also included in his stunning season were two further hattricks. That season his strike partner Neil Ramsey grabbed 20 goals as Rovers hit home 82 goals. Rovers defence of the Essex Senior crown would falter the following season, finishing 2nd behind Romford. In the 1996-1997 season Rovers would also finish second again, behind Ford United by just three points. The 1997-1998 season would be Rovers worst season in the Essex Senior League, finishing mid-table, 7th, and 36 points behind winners Concord Rangers. The club’s final appearance in the Essex Senior League saw them finish 2nd behind Bowers United. However, due to Bowers United failing to meet ground grading requirements for promotion, Rovers were promoted to the Isthmian League in their place. With Isthmian League Division Three on the horizon for the 1999-2000 season, Rovers move into Step 4 of the league pyramid was complete. At the very first attempt Rovers were promoted to Division Two finishing behind East Thurrock Utd by three points. Promotion to Division Two gave Rovers some stiffer opposition and the season finished with Rovers in mid-table.

In 2002 the Isthmian League then reorganised and Rovers found themselves in a new look Division One North, finishing mid-table but more than holding their own in what was a very competitive league. In 2003 the club were embroiled in a relegation fight, although this was won convincingly as Rovers finished 15 points ahead of the relegation zone. A further league reorganisation in 2004 saw the club switch to the Southern Football League Eastern Division for two seasons. The 2004-2005 season saw Rovers miss relegation by one point due to Erith & Belvedere FC being deducted three points, but in the 2005-2006 season Rovers bounced back to finish safely in mid-table. For the 2006-2007 season Rovers found themselves in familiar territory, switching back to the Isthmian League Division One North, where we finished 12th. Two further seasons saw Rovers finish 13th and stabilise themselves as a Ryman League club. The 2009-2010 season brought a record number of points for the Rovers at Ryman League level, 64, but towards the end of the season manager Iain O’Connell was offered the management of Ryman Premier League side Margate leaving assistant Ryan Wilkinson control with 12 games to go. In a season thatsaw Rovers top the table for 9 weeks, the dizzy

and physio Cleve Taylor to take over temporary

heights would eventually get to O’Connell’s side as they finished in 9th place, 13 points behind the playoffs. Ryan Wilkinson and Cleve Taylor would be implemented as joint-managers for the 2010-2011 season and their first season in charge would offer up 44 points and 15th place in the league. Their start to the 2011-2012 season wasn’t what they had hoped and after one win in their opening nine games, both offered their resignations. Rovers made first team coach Danny Heath caretaker manager and he brought temporary stabilisation back to the side as they recorded two wins and three draws from his seven games in charge. Rovers would offer the management post to Danny Greaves, son of ex-Tottenham and England legend Jimmy Greaves. Danny saw that a clean sweep of the side was required and let go the majority of the squad, bringing in loanees whilst trying to sign up new players. unfortunately, this plan didn’t work and after a miserable run of six losses in a row, he too offered his resignation. Rovers would offer ex-Captain and stalwart Dan Trenkel the position as manager in November 2011 in an effort to stabilise the club. However, Trenkel was playing for Redbridge FC at the time who were on a fantastic run in the FA Cup, and it would be two weeks before he would be unveiled at the club, Danny Heath taking temporary control again, although this time losing both games. Trenkel would bring back a number of players previously released by Danny Greaves, and opened his management career with a 2-2 draw at home to Waltham Forest, followed by a 1-1 draw at home to Harlow Town. However, although the side were performing better, results would continue to go against him and after just three wins in the remaining 21 games, including 6 draws, Rovers would find themselves bottom of the table and staring relegation into the Essex Senior League. In 2014, they won the ESL by one point on the final day of the season, and were

promoted back to the Isthmian League. 2016/17 season was probably the most turbulent the club has ever experienced. Seeing two Chairman leaving their posts, together with two Managers also losing their jobs. In total 71 players were used in the fight against relegation without any success. As we were finally relegated after two seasons at step 4 in the FA Pyramid returning to the Essex Senior League. Manager Iain O’Connell, in his second spell with the club has been working hard during the summer to put together a strong squad and to lay down the foundation to mount a serious challenge for promotion to enable Great Wakering Rovers to get back to Step 4 in the FA pyramid the club expects. 2017/18 Season Rovers won the ESL again as well as the Errington League Cup and was promoted back to the Isthmian League once again. 2018/19 see’s Garry Kimble take over from Iain O’Connell, who stepped down as Rovers manager during pre-season to concentrate on his family. Rovers had a up and down season with Gary Kimble leaving the club and Stephen Butterworth taking over just after Christmas on a temporary basis and managed to keep Rovers up and playing Isthmian football again for 2019-20 season. Stephen Butterworth was given the role on a permanent basis and is looking to build on last year.

SUNDAY 13TH SEPTEMIRATES FA CUP

Hashtag United 1Felixstowe & Walton 1(Hashtag United win 13-12 on penalties)

Felixstowe & Walton United exited the Emirates FA Cup at the first stage for the fourth year in succession after a penalty shootout loss in Essex

today. Henry Barley had equalised for the Seasiders late in the game after the home side had converted a first half penalty, and with the score tied at the 90 minute mark it was straight to penalties with Hashtag coming out on top 13-12 after an epic shootout of 30 spot kicks. The Seasiders started with a strong first eleven, despite the continuing injury situation, with teenager Tyger Smalls making his competitive debut, alongside Lamell Howell and Callum Robinson. Noel Aitkens, George Clarke, Miles Powell, Leon Ottley-Gooch and Curtis Haynes-Brown all missed the game due to injury. Hashtag ground share with Bowers & Pitsea at the Len Salmon stadium in Basildon, and it was a sellout crowd of 300 that welcomed the teams on to the plush 3G surface. Plenty of Felixstowe supporters had made the journey and were enjoying the hype that the YouTubers were bringing with their plethora of cameras and excitable young followers.

MATCH REPORTHASHTAG UNITED

If the Felixstowe supporters were expecting to witness the physical battle that usually accompanies the games in this part of the world, they were mistaken as from the off Hashtag were showing that similar to Felixstowe, they were going to instead get the ball on the ground and play a good brand of passing football and early on were breaking forward at pace without creating too much in the box. Ollie Canfer was close to putting the visitors ahead on 7 minutes, lobbing the Goalkeeper inside the box but seeing his effort just clear the crossbar. Hashtag took the lead on 15 minutes, a defender adjudged to have brought down their forward as he burst into the 18 yard

box. It certainly looked soft but the referee pointed to the spot despite being some way from the alleged offence. George Smith confidently converted the penalty to the delight of the home supporters. Lamell Howell shot wide as Felixstowe had more of the play for the remainder of the first half, with Hashtag happy to pack their defence each time the Seasiders ventured forward. Felixstowe were straight on the front foot at the start of the first half, Armani Schaar causing problems for the home defence and substitute Kyle Jopling launching a fierce shot that flew just wide with the Goalkeeper clutching thin air as he dived to cover the post. The home side were unfortunate not to extend their lead as the half wore on, twice being denied by excellent saves from Callum Robinson, one from close range as he someone managed to claw the goal-bound strike away from danger. Felixstowe finally

found an equaliser on 74 minutes, Henry Barley amongst three Seasiders on the edge of the box, and he rifled a great shot beyond the keeper to level the tie. Neither side had any further clear cut chances as the game edged towards the final whistle, delayed severely by a blood injury to captain Josh Kerridge. New rules for the shortened season meant it was straight to penalties after the 90 minutes and what an epic shootout it was! Felixstowe were to take the first penalty each round and it was Ollie Canfer who was first to see his decent penalty saved with the score at 1-1, luckily Callum Robinson immediately matched his opposing ‘Keeper by pulling off a great save to silence the baying home crowd. The first scheduled five apiece ended with a score of 4-4 and we went to sudden death. Some excellent penalties were taken by both sides and time and again Felixstowe’s lead was pegged back. Jordan Matthews was unlucky to see his penalty saved but

again Robinson was on hand to keep the Seasiders in the game. Finally with the score at 12-12 after 28 penalties, it was Kyle Jopling on the receiving end of a great save and this time Robinson was unable to stop the following penalty as the Tags ran out 13-12 winners to spark jubilant scenes amongst the home support.

SATURDAY 19TH SEPTISTHMIAN NORTH LEAGUE

Great Wakering Rovers 0Felixstowe & Walton 0Felixstowe & Walton United began their Pitching In Isthmian League North campaign with a goalless draw away at Great Wakering Rovers in South Essex this afternoon. The Seasiders can consider themselves unlucky not to snatch all three points after an encouraging performance against a side that ran out 4-1 winners the last time the clubs met, on the opening day last season. Felixstowe made three changes to the starting eleven that suffered the heart breaking mammoth penalty shootout loss in the Emirates FA Cup at Hashtag United last Sunday, Miles Powell, Sam Nunn and Kyle Jopling lining up in place of Stuart Ainsley (Suspended), Lamell Howell and Dan Davis. It was the visitors who had the better start to the game, and could have been ahead inside the first minute, Miles Powell seeing his looping header cleared off the goal-line. Keeper Callum Robinson safely smothered a 12th minute shot down at his near post, as both sides tried to gain the ascendancy. Felixstowe’s other best two first-half opportunities came with 60 seconds

of each other, Good work by teenager Tyger Smalls, down the left flank, teed up Miles Powell in a central position in front of goal, but he scuffed his shot straight at James Scammell, Shortly afterwards, Jamal Wiggins scooped over the bar from close range after great work from Ollie Canfer. Great Wakering someone managed to hit the crossbar from 3 yards out as the half ended goalless. A defensive lapse almost cost the visitors dear in the 55th minute, but Robinson came to the rescue with a smart low save from

Tuohy’s goalbound snap shot. At the other end, Powell failed to get enough power into a long-range shot, with Scammell easily saving in the 69th minute, while Ollie Canfer was only a whisker away from diverting home a free-kick by substitute Henry Barley from point blank range.

Rovers spurned their best chance of the afternoon, on 80 minutes. Jake Gordon burst beyond the Seasiders defence, but ballooned his shot over the bar with just the keeper to beat. Felixstowe stepped up a gear late on and peppered the target, Canfer heading straight at Scammell from close-in after substitute Nick Ingram had nodded on a corner. Centre-half Sam Nunn could also only direct a header straight at the keeper in the 88th minute. Felixstowe Manager Stuart Boardley spoke after the game. “I’m happy with a point but I think we deserved all three, however it’s a good, solid start to the season and a clean sheet. It was a good performance and given the disruptive pre-season we’ve had, I’m actually really pleased. I thought we were in control and I never felt uncomfortable in the game, perhaps other than a period towards the last five minutes of the game when the game got really stretched with both teams trying to win it, but unfortunately I think both teams could have played here all day today and still not scored!”
