(IPAA) is set to be held on November 8 and 9, 2012 at the Dusit ani Hotel, Makati City, Philippines. e theme of this year’s two-day follow- up seminar is “Pathways to Progress: Advancing IPRS in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)”. With more than a hundred participants expected to attend, a majority of whom are members of the IPAA who completed seminars, trainings, or study programs involving intellectual property rights in Japan, the seminar is aimed at understanding the value of trademarks and patents in fostering the growth of SMEs which are the engines of sustainable development. Mr. Isao Honzawa, Deputy Director, International Affairs Division of the JPO and Mr. Takao Ogiya, Director-General of the APIC-JIPII, along with other Japanese experts on intellectual property namely Mr. Chikashi Tamura, Ms. Reiko Toyosaki, and Mr. Nobuyuki Monna, will be acting as speakers during the seminar. Speakers from the Philippines will include Department of Science and Technology Undersecretary Fortunato dela Pena and Attys. Dina Lucenario, Anthony Peralta, John Paul Gaba, Edith Hechanova, and Eduardo Escano. IPAA SPEAKS BEFORE JOINT PANA-4As MEETING A s part of the IPAA’s initiative to apprise the public of the value of intellectual property, IPAA trustees gave separate talks on copyright, trademark and IP best practices at the joint meeting of the prestigious Philippine Association of National Advertisers (PANA) and the Association of Accredited Advertising Agencies-Philippines (4As) held at the Hard Rock Café, Makati City on June 28, 2012. With IPOPHIL Director General Atty. Ricardo Blancaflor and Deputy Director General Andrew Ong giving the introductory speeches, IPAA trustees Attys. Lizette Pulumbarit, Oscar Manahan and Augusto Bundang enlightened the audience about the need to be aware of the volume, value, and impact to society of the intellectual property which the advertising industry creates and contributes to the growth of the economy as well as the necessity of ensuring its protection and proper usage. PANA is the country’s leading association of advertisers committed to the promotion of “truth in advertising”. 4As on the other hand, is a non-stock, non-profit organization of various advertising agencies whose common objective is the promotion of and the development of the advertising agency business in conjunction with the advertising industry’s goals.

JPO, APIC-JIPII SPEARHEAD FOLLOW-UP IP SEMINAR

The awaited follow-up seminar on intellectual property organized by the Japan Patent Office (JPO) and implemented by the Asia-Pacific Industrial Property Center, Japan Institute for Promoting Invention and Innovation (APIC,JIPII) in coordination with the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) and the Intellectual Property Alumni Association, Inc. (IPAA) is set to be held on November 8 and 9, 2012 at the Dusit Thani Hotel, Makati City, Philippines.

IPAA JOINS UST MUSIC CAMP

The Conservatory of Music of the University of Sto. Tomas (UST), in coordination with the Department of Education (DepEd) Special Events Unit and the Heritage Institute Center, held its 24th Summer Music Camp and Festival at the Our Lady of Caysasay Academy, Taal, Batangas last May 26, 2011.

IPAA President Augusto R. Bundang, who was one of the speakers of the Camp, discussed the importance of copyright in the promotion, protection, and preservation of music, more particularly Filipino music.

First organized in 1988, the UST Summer Music Camp is held each year during summertime for a period of one (1) to two (2) weeks in different provinces in the country. Approximately 200 participants from the UST Conservatory of Music, consisting of faculty members and all the performing student groups, attend the Camp to share their musical expertise and experience with musicians, students, and residents of the local places they visit. Classes on music and the arts are held during the day for the local participants and concerts are presented at night.

IPAA HOLDS 1ST JOINT SEMINAR WITH DLSU

As its main project for the year 2011, the IPAA held for the first time, a joint seminar with the De La Salle University (DLSU) on October 1, 2011 at the Century Park Hotel, Manila with the theme, “IP, Business and the Academe”.

Conducted in cooperation with the DLSU Commercial Law Department, the DLSU Intellectual Property Office, and student organizations, Ley La Salle and IP Advocates, the joint seminar was aimed at familiarizing participants with the theoretical and practical understanding of copyrights, trademarks, and patents, and how intellectual property could best be protected and applied to commerce and trade, the establishment of new businesses, and the development of new products and services. The DLSU Commercial Law Department was

led by Attys. Jocelyn Cruz, Tony Ligon, and James Heffron.

The joint seminar, which was attended by more than a hundred participants and was featured in the Philippine Daily Inquirer and the BusinessWorld, allowed IPAA to raise some funds for its future projects.

IPAA trustees Attys. Anthony Peralta and Troy Luna as well as IPAA members Maria Trinidad Villareal, Neptali Bulilan, and

Christopher Cruz acted as speakers during the whole day joint seminar with IPAA trustees Attys. Oscar Manahan and Rey Gonzales as emcees. Part of the seminar proceeds went to IPAA’s beneficiary institution, the Food for Hungry Minds School, Inc. (FHMS) to help in the education of disadvantaged children.

IPAA SUBMITS ‘FAIR USE’ STUDY TO IPOPHL

were conducted in four (4) leading educational institutions in the country to arrive at an appreciation of the practices of students, librarians, and faculty relating to fair use of copyrighted works. “Fair Use” is a concept in intellectual property which allows the use of copyrighted materials without the necessity of seeking the consent of the copyright owners. IPAA trustee Atty. Dina Lucenario led the preparation of the study.

Fulfilling its commitment to IPOPHL under a Memorandum of Agreement entered into in October 2010, the IPAA submitted to the IPOPHL

on January 4, 2012 its exhaustive and lengthy study on fair use entitled, “FAIR USE IN THE ACADEME.”

The study deals with the understanding of fair use of copyrighted works in the Philippine academe and practices related to it. Surveys

Three (3) members of the IPAA lectured on the value and relevance of intellectual property to business during the Social Entrepreneurs’ Forum of Gkonomics, the social enterprise development partner of GawadKalinga, last August 10, 2011 at Magallanes Village, Makati City.

With the theme, “Innovation”, IPAA trustees, Attys. John Paul Gaba of Angara Abello Concepcion Regala and Cruz (ACCRA) Law and Divine Pedron of Villaraza, Cruz Marcelo & Angangco (CVC) Law, spoke about copyright and

trademark protection in the business setting. IPAA member Atty. Celeste Jumadla of Sapalo Velez Bundang & Bulilan (SVBB) Law Offices added her piece on patent protection and its role in business development.

Gkonomics intends to establish sustainable social enterprises in communities built by Gawad Kalinga residents in the process.

IPAA INVITED TO 1ST PHILIPPINE ANTI- COUNTERFEITING

AND PIRACY SUMMIT

IPAA President Augusto Bundang spoke on “INTA Best Practices for Addressing the Sale of Counterfeits on the Internet” last October 26, 2011 during the Round-Table Discussion organized by the IPOPHL in partnership with the International Trademark Association (INTA), at the 1st Philippine Anti-Counterfeiting and Piracy Summit held at Makati Shangrila Hotel.

Atty. Bundang pointed out the growth in online counterfeit sales and enumerated practices that may be adopted by search sites, market places, and shopping

sites, payment service providers, and trademark owners to address online counterfeit sale.

Atty. Regina Rara-Reyes, an IPAA member, acted as Chairperson of INTA during the discussion.

IPAA JOINS MARLAW IN HOLDING

BADMINTON TOURNEY

IPAA partners with the Maritime Law Association of the Philippines (MARLAW) in the holding of a badminton tournament this 24th of November 2012 at the PowerSmash Badminton Court located at Pasong Tamo, Makati City. Dubbed as the “MARLAW/IPAA BADMINTON TOURNAMENT”, it is organized to, among others, foster closer fellowship among MARLAW and IPAA members and friends . Part of the proceeds of the tournament will go to the Food for Hungry Minds School, Inc. (FHMS), a school for the disadvantage children living in the cities of Manila and Malolos.

Some 100 badminton enthusiasts in all levels of play are expected to participate in this friendly tournament. Registration fee is P750.00, inclusive of tournament fees and giveaways. Levelling sessions were held on October 27 and November 3. Another session will be held on November 10, 2012 from 5pm to 7pm. All IPAA members are invited to join.

IBP-RIZAL INVITES IPAA TO GIVE MCLE LECTURE ON IP

Recognizing IPAA’s established familiarity and knowledge on the subject of intellectual property, the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP), Rizal Chapter, headed by its President, Julian R. Torcuator, Jr., has formally invited the IPAA to give a talk during its Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE)

program to be held on November 24, 2012 at the IBP Building, Pasig City between 3:30pm to 6:30p.m.

The topic of the talk is “Intellectual Property” under the category of substantive and procedural laws. The MCLE program is a requirement which all lawyers in the Philippines are required to undergo every given period pursuant to Bar Matter No. 850 issued by the Supreme Court.
