Redfish on the flats is the name ofthe game this season.

We have the opportunity to catchthese fish all winter and into thespring, as our estuary system isloaded with large mud flats thathold one to two feet of water atdead low tide. Perfect habitat forRedfish.

As the water cools down in latefall, Redfish tend to school. This issimply a survival technique.

Redfish are the number one foodsource for our resident BottlenoseDolphin. The dolphin push theedges of these flats in smallgroups and try to corral a schoolof fish. It is something to see themfeeding on an eight-poundRedfish. They also help us locatethe fish with their feeding activity.

Given calm winds and clearwater, these Redfish schools arenot hard to find, by either seeingthem “push a wake” as they movedown the flat or simply seeing thedark color of the mass of fish.

Once we find them, we normallytry to get into casting range asquietly as possible and stake theboat down. Stealth is important incatching Redfish and the morenoise one makes in the boat, thefewer opportunities you will haveto pull one in.

Baits vary at this time of year. Cutmullet, shrimp, mud minnows,

spoons and soft plastics all work, but my choice is free lining aGulp – hands down the best betfor a hookup I have seen.

For fly fisherman, this is theultimate challenge. Sight castingto Redfish is big-time business allalong the Southeast and Gulfcoasts and the Lowcountry ofSouth Carolina is as good as youcan find. We have numerous daysof putting 10 to 20 Redfish in thefive- to 10-pound class in theboat on a four-hour trip.

Most of our trips in the winter arefour-hour trips, built around thelast two hours of the outgoingtide and the first two hours of theincoming. This gives us maximumexposure to that window ofopportunity in finding the fish.

What a great way to spend aJanuary afternoon. Beatsshoveling snow all to pieces!
