President’s Article !"#$%%&

Well, with such a memorable event, wheredo I start? Firstly, I should say that the fun, lessons learnt, colleagues re-acquainted,knowledge gained and overall restoredconfidence, are all still very fresh in thememory.

Unless you have spent the last 10 monthson another planet, you will know that thisyear we have been celebrating APCOM’s35th anniversary. With this in mind, wequite literally put the flags out to use thisyear’s conference to celebrateAPCOM@35. I always felt that it wasright that we should be a little self-indulgent and use the occasion tocelebrate APCOM’s success, recognise itsheritage and showcase the very best ofwhat APCOM brings to the world of print.Judging by the many positive responses, I think we pulled it off! But don’t just takemy word, have a look at some of theattendee comments on page 27.

The event kicked off with an evening offun, a 70’s themed murder mysteryorganised by Mark Barlow and SharniAthwal. A great way to start the event, butwho’s idea was it for the Executive teamto dress up as the Village People? Theysay a picture paints a thousand words!Have a look at page 5…need I say more?

Down to business and the theme of thisyear’s conference was “Shaping YourFuture”, which followed on from last year’sconference theme, “Proving Your Worth”.We had three excellent workshops, hosted by two of our Platinum sponsors(Mark Hinder from Konica Minolta andAndy Harris and Jay Limbachia fromCanon UK) and one of our members,Graeme Jesty of Gosport BC. Betweenthem, they gave us a coherent, informative and thought provokingperspective as to how we can, and needto focus on improving and developingproducts and services, in order to sustainand grow.

As usual, the highlight of our conferencewas the coveted awards evening. Thisreally is an evening of celebration, particularly so this year, when we get thechance to dust down the evening gear, enjoy a wonderful setting and celebrate

the work of our members. Not forgetting ofcourse, our resident host, Mark Barlow.Mark promised us the fun factor and didn’tlet us down. I also have to thank Mark(with gritted teeth) for a little birthdaysurprise. A small price to pay if I don’thave to hear that Dallas theme tune again!

However, one aspect of the year’s eventwill live long in the memory. In recognitionof our anniversary year, we were able togather together eight Past Presidents andrecognise their contribution to APCOM. I would like to give a special mention toAPCOM’s very first President, Ian Garrity. Now aged 82 years young, Ian took to thestage to deliver a wonderful unscriptedspeech, which received a deservedstanding ovation. It was probably mypersonal highlight of the evening.

I would like to congratulate all our awardwinners, a full list of the winners, alongwith details of their winning entries, arecovered throughout the magazine. I wouldparticularly like to commend Tom Hurstfrom Agilysis (Wigan Council), who pickedup the APCOM employee of the yearaward, just edging out Paul Precious fromBlackpool Council and David Bryan ofLeicestershire County Council. Tom isnow part of a very exclusive club! In facthis colleague Simon Ward walked awaywith the award last year…there must besomething in the water in Wigan!!!

I would also like to commend BlackpoolCouncil, who again walked away with thein-plant of the year award. Given that thestandard and quality of award entries getsbetter and better every year, this is a greatachievement for Mark Barlow and histeam. Once again Blackpool has set thebenchmark for us all. I for one will betrying even harder next year!

As ever, our conference would not bepossible without the support andgenerosity of our sponsors. In addition tosponsorship, our sponsors once againdonated some fantastic prizes, for both

the sponsors showcase prize draw andthe awards evening charity raffle. Duringmy speech at the awards evening, I madereference to the strong relationships wehave with our sponsors, many of whomhave supported us for many years. I amhopeful that many of those sponsors willbe with us again in 2015.

Last, but not least, I would like to thankthe Executive team and in particular, MarkBarlow, for the huge amount of work thatwas put into making APCOM@35 happen.I never lose sight of the fact that theExecutive work on a voluntary basis, oftenincluding weekends and annual leave. Onthat note, I am delighted to welcomeJames Clark as our new ExecutiveMember. James is familiar to many of youand holds the position of Design and PrintManager for the PDSA.

So another year is coming to a close and2015 is now on the horizon. We know thatthe year will again bring challenges thatwill test us all. We all know that pressuresare increasing, if only for us to simplystand still. I have said many times that westand a far better chance of survival byworking together through the sharing ofknowledge and experience. This is whereAPCOM really does come into its own, something which is virtually unique withinour sector. We have again left themembership fee at £100, with up to threefree secondary members. I am sure youwill agree that this is fantastic value

Finally, with Christmas now only a matterof weeks away (yes it’s that near!) it onlyleaves me to wish all our members andsponsors, a very merry Christmas and, I sincerely hope, a very prosperous newyear.

. . . we get thechance to dust downthe evening gear, enjoya wonderful setting andcelebrate the work ofour members . . .

Neath Port Talbot Council and The City & County of Swansea have joined forces to create the Swansea Bay Cycle Routes tube map!

This scheme aims to identify routes for commuting to work, school or shops. Therefore the routes, where possible, will take the most direct and flattest route and will be suitable for all types of bikes.

Work is underway on the Green Neath Valley Line. Other routes wil be signed on the coming months.
