PRESIDENTS’ REPORT
What a busy couple of months we’ve had since the
last issue of this fine Magazine, we held a very
successful Swap in July thanks to the efforts of many
of our more committed members, those who could
attend were rewarded with a delicious lunch at the Kampung Malay
restaurant in Mudgeeraba. We also visited several Retirement complexes
to put our cars on Display. A number of members made the trek to Lismore
to attend their annual two-day rally which was, as usual, very enjoyable.
Our monthly Cars N Coffee food stand is doing great helping to pay for the
Crankhandle printing costs. Many have taken advantage of some of the
interesting runs that have been organised by members, including a very
informative visit to an operating Fire Station. The two September Runs also
sound very interesting where those attending will visit a Military Tank
Museum and the Tugun Desalination Plant.
In August we held our Annual General Meeting during which your
Committee from last year all put their hands up to serve on your behalf for
another year, I’ve got to say you are very lucky to have people of this
calibre shaping the direction of the club, I’m very honoured to be leading
such a fantastic group of people. We do have a vacancy on the Committee
though and that is the position of Events Co-Ordinator. If you can walk and
chew gum at the same time you are perfect for the role; get in touch with
me if you would like to help.
Of course I must mention the nominations for the vacant Life membership
position, being Lyn Neuendorf, David Mitchell and Leo Janssen. During the
AGM those present decided Leo was the deserving member on this
occasion. If you read a little of Leo’s involvement in the club further on in
this issue you will see why he was successful. Congratulations to all
nominees, it’s a pity we didn’t have three vacancies!
Finally, and sadly, Vale to my friend Don MacTaggart who passed a few
days ago, I will miss him immensely. He was a unique man and a stalwart
of our club.
Cheers Col

Editors’ Report
What a busy last two months we have had with interesting
runs including visits, the swap and swap lunch, visits to
other car clubs and Sohan’s Cars n’ Coffee meets.
Travelling home from Canungra after a day out with the
Cadillac Club, our Cadillac decided to come to a stop on the
Clagiraba Road just before the T intersection near the
Nerang end. Even though the warning light had not come on
we thought we had run out of fuel, seeing as the needle was
very close to empty. Luck being with us, not more than
3minutes after ending up there, a car did a “U” turn and out
pops a nice young Frenchman to the rescue with a container
of fuel on top of his car. He is on a holiday here working at
Toowoomba but decided to visit the coast for the weekend
and he was travelling back up to Toowoomba.
He saved us hours of being stuck on the side of the road. I
thanked him and wished his stay in Australia to be a lovely
one.
Since Sir Nibs and I will be away for three weeks in
September I would like to thank the volunteers in advance
who are helping cover the Car’s n’ Coffee breakfast tent, and
I hope I get some good stories from someone on the
midweek run and any other event that we may miss.
A big cheerio to our growing list of members who, due to
one thing or another, are unable to participate as they usually
do in the club events. You are in our thoughts. I hope you all
enjoy the stories we have for you in this
Issue.

.Club Swap Meet.
This year we had a good turnout of volunteers who tirelessly
worked over the three-day weekend for our swap meet
which was a success. Thanks to Lyn Neuendorf for rounding
up everyone. It was the same weekend as the Cars n’ Coffee
on the Saturday morning, so our volunteers where split
between two functions.
It was a bit of a worry for our
campers at the Showground on
the Saturday night, as there was
a 21st Birthday Party being held
in the main Showground Hall; it was up to some of our
members patrolling the grounds until 1 a.m. then having to
rise again at 3 a.m. Sunday to start everything rolling. We
had a line-up of sellers on the road as usual by 4:30 so the
gates were opened early to let them in. There was a heavy
dew fall around 6 o’clock that yours truly caught a chill and
ended up with a head cold for the next week. Hopefully no
one else was affected. Thanks to Leonie and her helpers who
provided us with some breakfast to get us through the
morning. Everything started packing up at noon, but our
workers did not finish until 2pm. A big thank you goes out
to everyone who participated. The club held a Swap Helpers
Lunch at Kampung Malay restaurant on Saturday 3rd of
August; those who were able to attend enjoyed a lovely
meal. Hope to see the same great response next year.

Mid Week Run 31st July
The MG Car Club was invited along to our run this month
which was organised by Peter Stovold. Poor Peter Amey had
a start when he arrived at the club house to be surrounded by
nine MG cars, he thought he must be there on the wrong run.
By nine o’clock, our members slowly started arriving on this
beautiful winter’s morning. In all there were 12 cars from
the MG Club, (two of which are also members of our club
but signed in under the MG banner), and 9 cars of our
members.
Today’s run was only a short run
but very interesting, as we started off having a lovely drive
through Latimer’s Crossing and Clagiraba, driving through
Crankhandle News
Mt Nathan and ending up at Country Paradise Parklands for
morning tea. We had nearly an hour there so people could
have a good look at the Community Garden plot, the Men’s
Shed, where they were doing some wood turning, a group of
people doing paintings, plus the rescued horses. One poor
horse was blind in one eye. Unfortunately the Sheila’s Shack
was not open to see the various crafts they do.
From there we were
to go to visit the Fire
Station just down the
road at Nerang, but
due to unforseen cir-
cumstances they could not oblige us so instead had arranged
for us to visit the main Fire Station for the Gold Coast at
Southport.
We were greeted by a number of the Fire Fighters when we
arrived, with good parking facilities in their compound. The
first thing that was explained to us was that if the alarm bells
go, they have to respond straight away, and that we all would
be left to make our own way out of the compound as soon as
possible. Jon, the Fire
Station Officer gave us a
good talk on the facility
and the three types of fire
trucks, they opened up
Crankhandle News
everything showing the equipment they carry and explained
the use of each piece of equipment. There was the everyday
Fire Fighting Truck equipped with gear to cover all types of
fire situations. Then there was the search and rescue truck,
which is for all types of rescue incidents that could arise.
This vehicle does not carry water so isn’t for putting out
fires, but they had nearly everything in there except the
kitchen sink to handle rescues from a cat up a tree to a
collapsed building or someone
falling off a cliff. The third vehicle
was a very large Breathing
Apparatus and Hazardous Materials
Response truck for dealing with
chemical and contamination out-
breaks, as well as clean up of spills
they provide assistance to those
who have been affected by the
contamination. There was a fourth
little truck being a hose-down truck, where if you had been
in a contaminated area you would go into the truck to have a
complete wash down. It was a very
interesting time and an eye-opener
regarding what i s actual ly
carried on those trucks and the
various jobs our fire fighters carry
out.
Crankhandle News
From the Fire Station we ended up at Kampung Malay
restaurant at Mudgeeraba for a lovely lunch. I’d like to
thank the Southport Fire Fighters for a very interesting tour
and a big thank you to Peter Stovold for organising the
morning. It was enjoyed by all.

Paradise Lakes Care Centre Visit 3 August 2019
In keeping with our community support agenda, twelve
members in ten vehicles made their way to the Paradise
Lakes Care Centre in Runaway Bay to put their cars on
display for the residents. As well as cars from our own club
there were many from a few clubs in the surrounding area.
The hosts put on a free sausage for us as well as some live
music. All in all a very pleasant way to spend a sunny
Sunday morning. To top it off two of ours cars were voted
by the residents as being amongst the best three on show.
Towards the end a Fire Service Rescue vehicle arrived and
extended its 44 metre cherry-picker to the delight of those
assembled.

Cars N’ Coffee 20th July: Ah Winter! It sure was a chilly start to the July meet.
The sun lumbering up from its slumber was “warmly”
welcome by all. We had another exceptional event in spite of
the chill. The Car of the Meet went to a beautiful Ford GT40 in
striking Blue. This particular GT40 is owned by a gentleman
with some other very desirable vehicles’ e.g. a 351 Mach 1
Fastback.
The wonderful team from
Bentley GC and Maserati
GC were present with their
latest offerings in the form of a Continental GT, a Bentayga as
well as a Ghibli. They were absolutely stunning. An interesting
fact for Bentayga lovers, the very 1st Bentayga produced was
presented to Queen Elizabeth II.
Another bit of trivia, 2019 marks
the 100th anniversary of Bentley
Motors which was named and
founded by Walter Owen Bentley
and was often referred to as W O.
A very interesting car was the JWF
Milano GT which I understand was
an Australian Manufactured car
which saw much success in racing.
This example was ultra cool with a
rumbling V8 which made some very
thunderous sounds akin to a T-Rex looking for dinner. It was
Crankhandle News
very low slung and had design cues from Ferrari 250GTO,
Jaguar D-Type and probably some other significant marques
of the era. Overall it was a real treat.
K cars as they are known, are
small sized cars from Japan
mainly for the domestic market
which makes them a unique oddity overseas, but there was a
group of 4 Suzuki Cappuccino’s present. These were in some
very bright colours and all parked together making them quite
a sight. They almost reminded me of MG Midgets due to their
size. They only have a 600cc engine but I understand they go
like stink due to the light weight construction.
17th August: A wonderful array of cars, great folks,
scrumptious tucker and glorious warm coffee. The coveted Car
of the Meet went to a stunning Candy Apple
Red EH Holden and won for himself a $100
detailing voucher. This particular EH was
painstakingly rejuvenated over many years
and is a breath-takingly beautiful example
of Australia’s Finest home grown marque.
As always we had a varied showing of different marques,
era’s and body styles. A notable vehicle was a Baby Blue
Crankhandle News
ratrod. It was made from a 1926 Tudor,
chopped up, dropped, lengthened, cajoled,
and moulded into a cool contemporary
cruiser with a massive engine open for all to
see. 1960’s psychedelic print fabric covered the seats and with
burnt orange wheels, it was definitely unique.
A whole host of Porsche’s were also present from the original
356 to the modern itineration 718 Spyder and all in between.
There was also a modern take on a 550 spyder present in the
form of a 986 Boxster Backdate. The 996 Gemballa Turbo
was a real treat too. Beside this was another turbo, a Biturbo
in fact from Maserati. This particular
model was the Zagato Spyder. It was in
fact designed by Zagato on a Biturbo
Coupe platform. The coupe was then
delivered to Zagato where they took it all apart, shortened the
wheelbase to make it into a roadster which also reduced body
flex and roll now that they chopped the roof structure off too.
The Spyder was a rather low volume production vehicle with
only 1,049 units produced worldwide.
Another really cool car was the C7
Corvette. It looked so sinister in its all
gloss black garb. Now this is what you
call a Supercar killer, it had killer looks and a killer sound to
boot. Speaking of really cool, how can I forget about the
Suzuki Mighty Boy Ute. This was based on the already hyper
compact Suzuki 800 but made into a utility from the factory. It
was incredibly petite but boy was it big on character. This one
Crankhandle News
even sported shiny chrome tray guards which reminded me of
the old El-Camino’s.
Overall it was an exciting meet and one which was enjoyed by
all. See you all again next month on the 21st of September for
another wonderful morning. To view all the cars, please visit

Volunteers Required
The club has a Bacon and Egg and
Sausage Sandwich stand at the monthly
Cars N Coffee meets to feed the hungry
entrants and to raise some money for various causes e.g.
printing of the magazine and subsidising events. To-date the
same people have been manning the tent but it’s about time we
had more volunteers to lighten the load. It’s a good day with lots
of interaction with fellow car enthusiasts and we usually sell out
of food by about 09:30 so it’s not a long day. If you wish to
assist contact Col on 0409 825 913, you may even get a free
breakfast!!

Presidents Run Sunday Run 11th Aug.
Seventeen members braved the cold wind with nine classic
cars and one modern. The
sun was shining for a
lovely drive down through
the Gold Coast hinterland
to Currumbin Creek Rd, then to continue on to the coast
with the outlook of the surf,
following the coast road
down through Coolangatta
and onto Tweed before
heading inland on Kennedy Drive stopping at the Lions Park
where we met up with Margaret Hession, Mona Fleming and
Phil and Carol Law for morning tea. We
celebrated Mona’s birthday with a cake
Margaret had provided. It was a lovely spot on
the rivers edge watching the ferry come in and
disembarking its Chinese tourists. After
morning tea we travelled further inland
driving through Bilambil, then along Hogan’s
road veering onto Dulguigan Road following
the river along, then up over the
bridge and along the river to the other
side to have lunch at the Tumbulgum
Pub. Luckily we were there early and
Crankhandle News
ordered our meals before the rush came with the line extend
out the door. A very pleasant day was had.

Lifetime Membership
The AGM was held on the 12th August. No surprises
in finding last year’s Committee Members voted
back in for 2019/2020.
Upon a Life Membership position becoming vacant,
nominations were called for the position and a
number of nominations were received for three of our very worthy
members. After a secret ballot, Leo Janssen was chosen and he
accepted the Life Membership with grace and quite a bit of
emotion. Newer members would not be aware of the extent of Leo’s
contribution to the club, or the efforts he put in saving the club a
considerable amount of money and helping to restore the clubs
coffers.
Leo was born in the Netherlands in a town
called Venlo on the German border and
immigrated to Australia in 1950 living in
Sydney where he went to school for a couple of years and learnt our
language. He joined the building industry, met and married Pauline
in 1959 and had three sons, all of who became carpenters. His first
car was a 1929 DeSoto Ute then a 1936 Ford Coupe followed by an
Austin A40 Ute, and in 1958 a new Holden panel van. Leo’s boys
were very sporty and avid BMX Riders, then came the cars. By this
time the family had moved to the Gold Coast in 1979 and the boys
moved to cars with a show 1958 Chevy Drag car bought for $300,
so Leo had to join them buying a 1957 Chev 210, cutting the sides
and back out of it to make it a utility which they took to the
Nationals in Canberra, with Leo winning People’s Choice one year.
Leo then decided to join the GCAAC club.
Crankhandle News
He was an enthusiastic member and, like most of
us, added to this vehicle a 1927 Chevrolet
Roadster, then a 1934 Nash Sedan and a 1970
Chevrolet Camaro Coupe, each of which he
restored and drove on the various club events, all of which he and
his wife, Pauline, attended until ill health took its toll on his
mobility.
Leo served as President in 2001, 2002 & 2003. This period saw the
greatest expansion of interest and participation in the club and the
greatest building projects instigated and completed since the initial
establishment of the GCAAC clubhouse on its present site, and Leo
was the mastermind behind it all. As a retired builder, Leo
envisaged, drew up plans, attended to all
Council requirements, submitted a quote to
build the extensions, with the assistance of his
two carpenter sons, when needed, for cost and
completed first of all the “stage” area, with its
office and library in 2003, and then later, in 2007, “the Barn”. Leo
saved the Club from losing a large section of its land leased from
the Gold Coast City Council, who intended to reduce the Club’s
lease to one metre beyond the boundary of its buildings when the
lease was renewed. In 2007 this reduction in the area of land leased
did occur, but after the extensions and “The Barn” were completed.
It was Leo who was the architect and coordinator of the current
format of our successful annual “Original Gold Coast Swap”. He
coordinated the running of the Swap from 2001 almost
continuously until 2012 The Swap at the Mudgeeraba
Showgrounds became so popular that Leo negotiated with the
Mudgeeraba Pony Club to use their oval for additional space in
Crankhandle News
exchange for exclusive catering rights for the Pony Club.
During his twenty two years of membership,
Leo has worn many hats. Besides his terms
as President and his years as Swap
Coordinator, Leo held the Committee
positions of Vice President and also Property Officer. He also used
his wood-working skills to make the trophies for Autorama for
many years, saving the club a considerable amount of money.
No-one can deny Leo’s “outstanding services to the club and his
exceptional interest in the Association’s affairs”. Thank you Leo for
your foresight, practical advice and negotiating ability in helping
make this club what it is today.
NRVVCC Rally Lismore 16-18th Aug.
Thirteen members represented
our club at the NRVVCC Rally,
meeting up at Margaret
Hession’s home on the Friday
morning before travelling down
the Hwy to the turn off for Bangalow, stopping
at The Farm for morning tea with a salty
coffee. When we went to resume our journey,
Albert’s Chevy decided it didn’t want to go
yet. After 15 minutes of coaxing we were back
on track. Arriving in Lismore and booking into our Motel we had a
drive to the Hawkins residence at Wyrallah to register the cars for
the rally and afternoon tea. That evening some sixty six entrants and
Crankhandle News
their partners attended the Welcome Dinner at the Lismore Workers
Club.
Saturday morning we were
assembled at the Greyhound
Track for morning tea before a run through scenic back roads
around Lismore, Bexhi l l and onto Alstonvil le
Showground where a lunch was provided for us. We had a free
afternoon before attending a buffet Dinner at the South Lismore
Bowls Club.
Sunday morning, as the boys attended the Swap at the Showground,
Joan and I went to the markets at the shopping centre finding some
good buys as usual. Then we all assembled in one of the city’s main
car parks for our briefing for the next run. We had a lovely
relaxing drive through the Lismore surrounding areas, stopping at
Rocky Creek Dam for morning tea then travelling on some very
windy roads to our lunch stop at the Clunes Coronation Hall.
After lunch prizes were awarded for
different categories, and the raffle prizes
drawn where some of our members did
very well. Then it was time to say our
goodbye’s and start our journey home. Just near the Cabarita Beach
turn off our Holden decided it had enough, with rattles and shakes
coming from the front of the car. Col pulled over into the
breakdown bay, thanks to Leonie & Richard Brown who gave me a
lift home, Col and the Holden came home on a
Hino. Overall, it was an enjoyable weekend, with a
lot of laughs and beautiful scenic driving.

Seniors Day Gold Coast Heritage Museum
Sixteen of our members attended the
Seniors Week function up at the
Heritage Centre where a total of 14
Vintage and Classic cars were on
display representing countries from all
over the world. The Museum provided
a lovely morning tea, then our
President put on a Hamburger lunch for the members who
participated.
Midweek Run Wed 28th August.
Bill Budd put together a great run for us today where we
travelled from the clubhouse through Robina and up Bermuda
Street turning at Ashmore Road to go
to the Botanical Gardens where we
had half an hour to wonder and view
the lovely surroundings with our
morning tea. Marie Darke’s driver was
Granddaughter Sam who was lucky
enough to win the draw

for the free lunch.
After leaving the Ashmore Gardens we travelled up
Currumburra Rd passing the Gold Coast Hospital before
turning off at Napper Road, then onto Captain Cook Dr ending
up at the Gold Coast Model Railway
Club on Kendor Street. There, hidden
away in a industrial area, was this big
building with multiple model railway
displays set up, running from one end of
the building to the other, through model
villages, countrysides and rail stations with
n u m e r o u s t r a i n l i n e s . T h e
workmanship was marvellous and there was at least 9 of their
club members there all working on a new layout. The President
gave us a talk and exhibition on how it all worked. It was a
well presented diorama of everyday life in miniature form and
you could see many years of work had
gone into the making of the scenery.
We left the Model Rail Club an hour
later and travelled along Brisbane
road before turning off onto Hollywell Rd, which took us to
Runaway Bay with the Rugby Leagues Club on the left where
we had our lunch. They had a good selection of meals and
most of our members enjoyed the tub of ice cream that you got
free with the Senior Meal. Great run Bill.

Vale Don MacTaggart
Regrettably, with great sadness we say
farewell to Donald MacTaggart who passed away
on Thursday 29th August. Don had been feeling
unwell for the last couple of months and unfortunately
was diagnosed with Leukaemia which quickly took a
strong hold.
Don was a member of the Tweed Valley Car Club and MG Car club
before joining GCAAC in 2014. Since Don and Wendy joined the club
they were very active members attending functions, rallies and helping
with the Swaps. Don also organised some of the overnight runs and was
the main driver and organiser, with the assistance of Margaret
Hession, Bernadette Amey, John Talbot and David Heaney for our 50th
Celebrations and Dinner.
One of Don’s interests was collecting model cars which he
displayed prominently in his study. He was the proud owner of his
beloved grey 1965 Daimler and an MGA still in restoration. On a few
of the earlier car runs in the Daimler he experienced a couple of
problems so Don’s mates ribbed him about the Daimler going home on
the back of a flatbed, in typical Don fashion he got a sticker attached
to the rear of the car which said “Home on a Hino”. But it was his pride
and joy.
May he rest in peace.
