FRIENDLY FARM RESTAURANT, NOVEMBER 12th

Chesapeake Region President Paula Ruby welcomes members to the annual repast.

By Bill Wurzell, Editor As with many other Chesapeake Region members, I look forward to seeing many friends I rarely get to see during the year. One of the first couples I met in the parking lot, checking out the old cars was Rick and Karen Berger of Gambrills, Maryland. They drove up in their gorgeous 1966 Chevrolet Super Sport 327 convertible, with factory four-speed and gauge package. They purchased the car new, WOW! Rick and Karen own other collector cars including the holy grail of old cars, a 1953 Buick Skylark convertible which was featured in the Bulletin a couple years ago. Other folks I haven’t seen all year are Craig and Mary Whitcraft. I was all set to pounce on them about becoming 'boat' people and abandoning their old car friends until Mary

pointed out they went on four National Tours this year and just returned from Florida from a tour. I quickly pulled in my horns and begged forgiveness. But, yes they do have a boat now and are loving it. As I wished Craig and Mary well it was about this time the dinner bell rang.

It was time to be seated and say grace led by Vicky Wilmer. I was lucky enough to get a seat at the table with my good friends, Willis and Jan Terrett, Murray Cole and his cousin Pat, Jim Turner, Bob Lenio, Doris Phelps and her son. The efficient Friendly Farm staff began calling tables to pass through the buffet line on both sides. This really sped up the serving time which everyone was grateful for because I heard the phrase several times from a variety of people: 'Boy, am I ever hungry'. As always the fried chicken and shrimp were succulent, the yellow corn and green beans tasty and the mashed potatoes and gravy topped it all off. There was no need to load your first plate because it was okay to pass through the line twice! Can’t forget that crab cake! People with a whole lot more will power than me can ask for a container to take the crab cake home. Not me, no way, as satisfying as everything was I couldn’t wait to dig into the crab cake!

The President’s MessageFrom Paula Ruby

Fondly, Paula

Our recent Chesapeake Region annual banquet at Friendly Farms was another great event and we are all now preparing to celebrate another holiday season. We were privileged to have in attendance the 2015 National AACA President, Don Barlup, and former first lady Carol. Also in attendance was Stanley (Doc) Stratton and his wife Charlotte. Don and Doc will be acting as our National Advisor and Chief Judge respectively for our National meet in July, 2018. We had 145 adults and children attend the banquet this year. I hope that everyone enjoyed themselves as we look forward to another year. I would like to thank Vicky Wilmer for handling the banquet and Buzz Diehl for preparing the slide show and taking photo’s that day. Congratulations to everyone that

won an award this year. It is always my pleasure to give the President’s Award. This year was a easy task since I knew back in June exactly who I was going to present this award to. Congratulations to Norm Heathcote for being this year’s winner. It is with Norm’s efforts that we are well on our way to having a terrific meet in July. Thanks Norm!

As we prepare for another busy year of events, we need to think of what our personal contributions will be to help make it successful. We have a very busy calendar. Starting in January we have a tour to an Automobile Memorabilia Collection, and in February the Chesapeake Region’s display of member’s antique vehicles at the new car Auto Show held at the Baltimore Convention Center. We need to all prepare for the Collector Car Swap Meet at the Howard County Fairgrounds in March. Please keep in mind that EVERYONE’S help is need-

ed for this event. By now everyone has received their 50/50 Raffle tickets to buy or sell for the benefit of the club. This drawing will be held at the Swap Meet, so please sell the tickets and return them to me as soon as possible. Please do not wait until the day of the drawing to return them. At the January membership meeting we will have sign-up sheets for the help needed for the March swap meet. If everyone helps, the work will not fall back on just a few. I would like to see some of our new members come out this year and help with the swap meet. If you are wondering what we need help with, please give me a call. There are jobs inside and outside that need to be filled, both sitting and standing. WE NEED YOUR HELP!

At our January membership meeting we will have information on the AACA Eastern Spring Meet in July. We will have a list of jobs that need to be filled. Jack Treadwell will be in charge of maintaining a list of people that have signed up. I hope that our membership will be making their reservations to stay at the Wyndham which will be the host hotel. This meet and its success will be a reflection on Chesapeake as an AACA Region.

In order to maintain the volume of members that we presently have and to increase our membership next year, we will be of-fering FREE membership for 2018 to anyone that is a NEW member to Chesapeake Region. I will also try to get as many FREE memberships to National AACA as I can. We have already used the 4 free memberships for 2018 that National AACA gave us. We have increased our 2017 membership by 19 members. Recruiting new membership is everyone’s job to do for 2018. Whenever we have an event, or just when you are meeting someone at a car show or cruise-in, offer a free membership to someone.

I would like to thank the membership for re-electing me as your President for 2018. I take this position very seriously and hope that with your help we can have another successful year. I would like to thank both the elected board and the appointed board members for staying in their positions for another year. Surrounding yourself with great people makes everyone’s job a lot easier. If anyone every has any questions or comments I am always available to hear what you have to say.

In closing it is with a heavy heart that I need to report to the membership that we have lost one of our beloved members. Terry Materazzi has gone to be with the Lord. Terry is the wife of Dan Materazzi. Terry was a wonderful woman and a friend to everyone that she came in contact with. She will be truly missed by everyone. Please keep Dan and their family in your prayers.

I wish everyone a Blessed and Merry Christmas and a Healthy and Prosperous New Year. SEE YOU ALL IN JANUARY!

THE END OF ANOTHER GREAT YEAR!

Scenes From The Banquet

Secretary Tom Dawson and wife Judy are presented with the first ever and much deserved ‘Silver Wrench’ Award...AND the 'Flat Tire' Award!

President Paula Ruby presents a flower plant to wives of guest speakers Charlotte Stratton and Carol Barlup.

If there is something important that needs to be done, it is usually han-dled very capably by either Nancy, Vicky or Joanne.

Henry Chaudron, Sr., stands behind the delicious gourmet cupcakes that were presented to each guest. L to R, Carol, Henry, Nancy, Rosalie.

Elaine and Jack Treadwell, Chesapeake Region Treasurer, are engaged in conversation with the members across the table, while Nick and Linda Prevas’ granddaughter, 'Maddie' (next table, behind Jack) 'mugs' it up for the camera!--Buzz Diehl photos

Director Tom Young turned the tables on President Paula Ruby by pre-senting her the 'Chick Smith Memorial Award'. This award is presented to the member that the board believes has done the most for the club during the past year. Well deserved, Paula!--Buzz Diehl photos

The above group of people were thanked by Paula Ruby and Norm Heathcote for stepping up to carry out the many chores involved with the club’s hosting of the Eastern Spring meet in Gettysburg in July of 2018.

Treasurer, Jack Treadwell had the unenviable task of purchasing the annual gift for 'Madam' President, Paula Ruby. How does one purchase a gift for a woman that already has a Cadillac sports car a Chevrolet Cor-vette and a Packard restro rod?

All the youngsters above are Junior members of Chesapeake Region, they are, left to right: Olivia, Maddie, Naomi (in front of Maddie) Reese and Ethan. Naomi 3, is practicing to become a junior member, soon.

OFFICERS-OF-THE-DAY! Were presented awards for their efforts at events throughout the year. Left to right: Ken & Sally Stevenson, Ron King, Mike Natale (partially blocked) Bob Natale, Joanne Day, Vicky Wilmer, Gary Wilmer (behind Vicky) Phil Hack and Shelly Hack.

Former Bulletin Editor and Club Officer, Nick Prevas was called upon to announce officers and board members for 2018. It was easy for Nick as all elective and appointed positions 're-upped' for another tour of duty.

Hi Guys & Gals! I thought this month I would talk about Air Bags. No, not some of our members, but what is in all of our modern cars and trucks. The first U.S. patent was applied for in 1951. It took federal officials two years to 1953 to issue a patent. This was for a system called 'Safety Cushion Assembly.' In 1953 a man in Germany received a patent for a device called an 'In-flatable Cushion.' General Motors and Ford started experimenting with

inflatable restraint in the late 1950s. It wasn’t until the mid 1980s that SSR or Supplement Restraint Systems be-came a standard item on most vehicles. The federal gov-ernment mandated in 1998 that all cars had to have dual front air bags. General Motors installed in dash passen-ger air bags as early as 1972. Late that year GM installed its Experimental AIR CUSHION Restraint systems in

1,000, 1973 Chevrolet Impalas and Caprices that were sold to fleet cus-tomers, then evaluated a year later. The first car to use a standard air bag was the 1973 Oldsmobile Toronado also in 1974 GM offered air bags on some Oldsmobiles, Buicks and Cadillacs. This was a GM option and the cost was $225. Some of the problems they ran into were the redesigned center hubs on the steering wheels, very large for the day and they had 4 small horn buttons on the outer spokes of the steering wheel, and a relocated auxiliary glove box, since the original glove box was taken up by the air bag mechanism. After three years 1974-1976, GM had only built 10,000 cars with air bags in the three cars they were offered. So the option was dropped. Most didn’t have them, as GM was experimenting with them, and some of the early air bags actually resulted in some fa-talities, coming out with too much force. Now, air bags save thousands of lives each year. In 2006 Honda Motor Company offered an air bag system on some of their motorcycles, I have no idea how that worked. I hope this gives you something to think about. Also, don’t forget if you have something auto related or a car that you want to sell or trade, it's free for members to advertise in the Chesapeake Bulletin. Just give me a call or email me your information by the 15th of the month. --See ya, Gary!
