It suddenly seemed like a good idea to borrow a truck and trailer and drive cross-country. Within about 10 minutes we had our “road crew” assembled. With the help of our friends at Anheiser-Bush and Jack Daniels Distillery, a 5000 mile drive, tow vehicle, plane tickets and a race entry came together with amazing ease. Between AIM Tuning and the Indy Miata Club we have everything we need. Our team includes the following personnel: Shane Benson: Spec Miata Owner/Driver, Owner of AIM Tuning and Ring Leader. Shane is a very talented race driver, holding 2 class wins and a track record for Spec Miata. He is also known for beating cars in faster classes and has a driving style that’s often compared to Juan Manuel Fangio, Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumaker. I can’t think of anyone I’d rather have at the wheel of a race car (other than myself, he added modestly). Mike Selvy : Cross-country driver and race crew in charge of RC cola, moon pies and the CB radio. Mike’s background in pulling 28’ double trailers (total length 65’) for UPS will be invaluable on this trip. He’s also the only one that knows how to work the CB. Mike’s wicked sense of humor should come in handy as the driving hours get long and we hit the white-knuckle down-hill sections of highway in the Rocky Mountains. Chris Poglitsh: Cross-country driver and race crew in charge of No-Doze, beef jerky, and map reading. As you read this, several of us are driving westward across this great land on our way to the MontereyGrand Prix in California. We’re not just going as spectators, mind you, we are racing! As with most great events, it all started with a dream and some beer. A few months ago Shane Bensonmentioned that he would love to drive in the in the Mazdaspeed Cup Race, if only there was a way to makeit happen. Monterey California seemed a long way away.

Question: How do you get a race car and team all the way to the other side of the world anyway?Answer: Get a few Miata Club members together with some other gear-heads at Union Jacks Pub

Events For You and A Miata

Jason Baugh: Owner of Trackside Supply and provider of out truck and trailer for the event, alongwith radio communication gear and “track-side supplies”. Jason is an accomplished RX7 racer withinvaluable experience in car setup, racing communication systems and crewing for race teams. Please visit Jason’s web site www.tracksidesupply.com. He has been very generous and this tripmay not have happened without his support. Thanks Jason!!!

Some other people, that without them, this trip could not have happened: Ann Selvy, SaraBenson and the one-and-only Teresa Turbo. Without the support of our wives, we couldn’t havepulled this off. As soon as Teresa Turbo heard about this adventure, she said I had to go. She alsosaid something about ten days worth of nonstop Miata usage and an “all girls” party while I’m gone.Maybe she wishes it was a 14 day trip!

So, on June 2nd we’ll start our westward journey to arrive in Monterey on the 5th. The race ison June 9th and we should return home on the 12th. I’m sure we’ll have our share of adventure androad stories. (Hopefully enough to fill the front page of “The Open Road” for a few months!). AndShane will proudly display his 1st place trophy at our next Indy Miata Club gathering. Throughoutthe trip I will be posting pictures and updates on my web site, so please check frequently for updates.Go to: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/indymiataclub/

I think as Miata owners, we all know this one truth: It’s not the destination, but the journeythat is important. Though we go there to win, the experience of the journey will be a greater part ofthe fun. No matter what the outcome of the race, we all look at this as being a trip of a lifetime.

The Indy SCCA autocross continues and club members and their Miatas are participating.(But seeing a Yugo out on the course was worth the trip out to a May event!)Sunday, June 9 - 16th Street / Bush StadiumSaturday, June 22 - Anderson Delco Plant #3Go to: http://www.indyscca.org/schedules/2002SoloSchedule.html for directions.

It’s a Parade! On July 9th, how off your Miata in style! At this Tuesday parade, to kick off theDecatur Township 4-H fair, we carry dignitaries in our Miatas. We need and want drivers. Pre-parade meets at the Decatur Township fire station on High School Road at 4:30. Afterwards we parkat the fair and enjoy tenderloins, brats, etc. etc.

Take I-465 to southwest part of interstate loop and get off at Kentucky Ave. Go one milesouthwest on Kentucky Ave. to High School Road. At the light, turn south on High School Road andproceed 1 mile to fire station parking lot. Please RSVP to: [email protected] or you may call317-255-1874 and leave a message.

Don’t forget our ongoing membership drive! We’ve included a membership sheet in this is-sue.

4 Open Road June 2002

The sun was trying to peek through the clouds as 13 Miatas showed up forthe “Picture This” rally on May 19th. Most tops were up, but every one wasready to rally.

Rally Master Melissa Forbes (Her co-Rally Master was not present, moreon that later) laid down the rules and gave general advice on what to do and notto do. We were handed our guides which consisted of nine locations in theIndianapolis area. All we had to do was find each location and answer specificquestions about the location. The rules? Get the answers by any means possibleand do it in the least mileage possible.

The Indianapolis natives had the edge on this rally as the Mooresvillenatives Barricks couldn’t even begin to guess where the Flowing Well was. Some ralliers jumped in their cars and planned their routes on the fly, whileothers had maps spread out across windshields and carefully plotted their course.

The sun did pop out, but just for a short while, and soon rain drops werefalling on convertible tops. Teresa “Turbo” Wills stayed true to her motto, “Thetop is down if I’m in the car” and smiled and waved at others as she zoomed by.

The competitive nature of the ralliers showed as Rick Morris tried to con-vince Barb Gentry a toad was inside the Connor Prairie museum. She didn’t buyit. Mean while, Rick’s navigator was outside advising Barb’s co-driver, Joyce, there were really 12 handicapped parking spots in the parking lot. She didn’tbuy it. Meanwhile, Steve and Angela Jacobson thought they could win withtheir low mileage of only 40 miles, as they telephoned Connor Prairie for an-swers. The rules did say to get the answers by any means possible!

The rally ended at Al Jennings and Susan Koerner’s home in Carmel, where ralliers feasted on Bar-B-Que sandwiches and sides dishes. Routes andstrategies were compared, answers were questioned, grave sites at Crown Hilldiscussed (I didn’t know Bob Irsay was buried there!) and more food was eaten.

After tabulating the answer sheets, mileage was confirmed, and the win-ners were announced. Jim and Martha Nutt placed first, Rick Morris and SaramcBride placed second, with Mike and Ann Selvy and John and Marti Lee tiedfor third place.

Our co-Rally Master Chuck Wills did finally show up, and provided agood explanation for his absence. He proudly displayed the 2nd place trophy inthe SCCA Club Racing event held in Michigan at the Gingerman Raceway.Congratulations, Chuck!

Thanks to our Rally Master for setting a fun event!

Open Road 5June 2002

You may remember that over the winter I purchased a hard top for “TheBlue Beast”. It kept me snug and warm through the winter and really madethe M’ster an enjoyable cold weather car. In case you hadn’t noticed, though, spring is here. Once it’s above 60 degrees, it’s time to ditch the hard top.(Though according to Teresa Turbo, anything above freezing is top-downweather!)

I had looked at various scenarios for summer hard top storage, but noneseemed like good solutions to me. There are various carts and wall hangingdevices, as well as ceiling hoists, but I tend to over-engineer things and thecommercially available hoists seemed a little “wimpy” to me. So, I took itupon myself to engineer my own hard top hoist system.

It took a Saturday to collect the necessary parts and put it all together. Most parts can be sourced from you local home improvement center.

I started by running a piece of 1” angle iron across the rafters and at-tached it with three 1/4” lag screws. This hardware is similar to what holds upyour garage door opener. To this angle iron I attached an industrial grade 2”metal pulley and 2” shackle. Next came the top straps.

They wrap under the top and attach to another pulley and shackle. Byusing two pulleys, the top raises and lowers with ease. The rope runs alongthe ceiling to another pulley in the corner, and then down the wall to a cleatthat is solidly mounted into a wall stud.

To raise the top, simply pull the car under the hoist, undo the latchesand slip the straps under the top. A few tugs on the rope and your top ishanging out of the way at ceiling height!

If you would like a custom made top hoist of your own, just let meknow. I would be happy to put together a package for you with or withoutinstallation. You can reach me at 317-291-5563 or [email protected].

Midwest Miata Challenge V - August 3rd

6 Open Road June 2002

There have been times when my kids, or other close acquaintances, have actually suggested that I need to find somethinguseful to do instead of spending so much time cleaning and driving my Miata. I don’t understand what they mean, since I justsupposed that everybody cleans the engine compartment of their car.

The original owner of my car had decided to have the car Ziebarted, which wouldn’t have been a big deal, but as a resultof the rustproofing, the engine compartment have a substantial coating of what can charitably be described as a brown goo thatwas essentially everywhere. Even though I was one of the few people who ever saw it, it slowly got on my nerves enough that I

by Dr. Detail

decided to do something about it. I read posts on the Miata forum and atMiata.net and saw that there were several ways to approach this job, so Ithought I would share them with you and then tell you what I did. Theimportant thing to remember is that once the compartment is clean, keepingit clean is actually pretty simple.

The easiest way to get the engine compartment clean is to take itsomewhere that specializes in steam cleaning car engines. If yourcompartment is really the pits as a result of your extensive off-road driving, this might be a good way to go. It certainly is a good way to avoid a bigmess and colorful phrases.

The second way is to take it to the coin-op car wash and use thedegrease setting on the hose, along wit a good engine degreaser. Thisapproach makes me fairly nervous, since you have to be pretty careful aboutnot getting water in the spark plug holes. In addition, I’m sure that whateveris used as a solvent at the car wash would also be pretty hard on your paintif you weren’t really careful.

The approach I took ended up being pretty simple and only tookabout half an hour. If you’re into DIY, you will need the following:1) A good engine degreaser, which you can buy at any parts store.2) A roll of those blue paper shop towels, again, buy at the parts store3) A couple of sponges that you won’t mind throwing away4) Possibly a tapered brush of some kind for those really tight places5) A bunch of cloth towels to spread over the fenders while you’re working6) The garden hose7) Possibly a pair of rubber gloves to protect your hands

Get the job started by taking a break. Make sure that engine islukewarm to the touch or cooler. Pop open the hood and then spread yourtowels over the fenders in case you slop some of the degreaser where itshouldn’t go. I started by lightly applying the degreaser to the underside ofthe hood and then letting it set for a few minutes. You don’t want it to dry,but you should let it work for a minute or so. Take a clump (technical term)of your blue shop towels and wipe the degreaser off and throw the papertowels away. Continue this process throughout the engine compartmentuntil you have the whole engine clean. Use the brush for tight places or justreapply some degreaser and wait a little longer. You can also use the spongesfor stubborn spots. After you have the whole compartment clean, cover thedistributor and the spark plugs and wires with some towels and then gentlyrinse that compartment out with the hose and then dry it with some towelsor just drive the car around for a few minutes.

After this is done, you can put a quick coat of Nu-Finish or someother wax on the underside of the hood and firewall. This will keep it lookingpretty nice. After all this is done, just wipe the underside of the hood, etc.every other car wash or so and it will stay pretty nice looking.

Until next time, remember that there may be more useful things to dothan cleaning and driving your Miata, but we know that hardly any of themare as much fun.
