Heronswood® Garden Debuts New Creation from PGST Artist Brian Perry

Experiencing Perry’s art just one reason to visit Heronswood in 2020

Heronswood® Garden is gearing up for an exciting 2020!

The excitement began early when the garden welcomed a new piece by Port Gamble S’Klallam artist Brian Perry in November 2019. A new door with a raven design by Perry now greets guests to the Garden House, which is the main building for events, conferences, and for brides, grooms, and other guests to get ready for outdoor fesitivities.

On his inspiration for the design, Perry said, “Ravens have

always inspired me and are one of my favorite critters. I have some great memories of ravens from hunting excursions and once I witnessed what I thought was two ravens flying in unison and in tight formation. As I watched I realized it was four ravens. They looked like they were doing a Blue Angels routine. It was amazing and something I’ll never forget.”

He added: “When I’m designing something, I always hear my teachers: Fill the space. Balance. Draw with the intent to carve. These few tips have helped me a great deal on my journey as an artist. I’m thankful for any opportunities to have art in public places.”

This is the second piece Perry has created for the Gar-den. In 2015, a totem pole Perry carved was raised at Heronswood’s front entrance. The totem pole depict-ed the playful heron and frog figures in Heronswood’s logo.

“Brian’s design for the door adds a rich focal point in the heart of the Garden and we know visitors will be delighted to see this new installation when the Garden reopens for the season,” said Joan Garrow, Executive Director of the Port Gamble S’Klallam Foundation.

The schedule of events for 2020 begins on March 7 with the Hellebores & More sale, which will feature plants from Chimacum Woods, Windcliff Plants, and Heronswood. This much-anticipated first plant sale of the year will also include free lectures and an opportu-nity to tour the Garden as many of the late winter and early spring ephemerals are in action.

Breaking Bread: PGST & Suquamish Elders Enjoy Time Together

PGST & Suquamish Elders have been spending some time together!

On January 31, PGST Elders visit-ed Suquamish for lunch and bingo. A couple of weeks later, on February 14, Suquamish joined PGST to cel-ebrate Valentine’s Day with a meal and another game.

Both communities enjoyed visiting with friends and relatives and hope to do it again soon!

Staff Says Good-Bye to Old Health Clinic Building

Staff gathered to say good-bye to the Tribe’s original health and medical facility, which was demolished on Tuesday, February 18.

Over the years, the building had previously been home to many services, including fire, EMT, medical, community

health education, WIC, dental, health admin, and a fit-ness center.

Ground has broken on a new Health and Wellness Cen-ter, which is expected to be complete by the end of this year.


Spring Happenings in March at The PointThe Spring Break 8 Beach Party continues with several great shows and events in March, including our Beer-fest on March 7 with Fan Halen; Pink Floyd on March 5 and 6; Backstreet Jellyroll—Van Morrison Tribute on March 12 and 13; and Queen Nation on March 14 and 15. Appetite for Deception, a Guns N’ Roses Tribute, visits The Point on Saturday, March 21.

Get in on the College Basketball Bracket Action at The Point! Beginning March 23, Wildcard Club Members can enter The Point’s $5,000 Top 16 Basketball Bracket.

On March 23, enter to win a new TV! Big screen TV Drawings will be held on Monday, March 23 from 7 pm to 9 pm.

On Sunday, March 15, the Pit will hold its Monthly Blackjack Tournament at 3pm. Prize money is $1,000 with an entry fee of $20.

The Boom Room will host an event with Jameson on Saturday, March 14 from 5 pm to 9 pm followed by the band Merge at 10 pm. Other music acts include Sour Mash—Blues and Rock on Friday, March 20 and, on Saturday, March 21, enjoy Hairstorm 80’s metal glam rock at 10 pm.

During the final weekend of March, we have DJ Traxx on March 27 and Megs McLean Country Rock Grunge at 10 pm on March 28.

NOTICESReminder: If your child is under 4’9”, they will be required to use a booster seat when riding in the van. Any child who will not will need to be picked up from the spot the van is at. This is for safety and is Washington State law.

Academic Coach Support: The Academic Coaches support our 200+ PGST students. We have after-school homework club daily for high school students; Tuesday and Thursday for middle school students; and Wednesdays for elementary students. Coaches include Bryce (high school), Tash (mid-dle school), and Stormy and Norman (elementary).

If your student is struggling, please reach out to your school’s coach and set up a time outside of Homework Club for extra support.

NKSD Snow Make-Up Days: Wednesday, June 17 is a full day of school. Thursday, June 18 is a make-up day, and Friday, June 19 is the last day of school.

Science Camp: Spring Science Camp is April 6-8 during Spring Break. Applications available at the Career and Ed. Bldg. or through Middle School Academic Coach, Tash W. This camp is possible through a grant partnership with Russell Foundation. Culture, science, math and communi-ty are woven into each camp. This Spring we will be study-ing traditional plants and make cards that feature a photo, traditional use of plant, language and a building resiliency element that relates to the plant characteristics/properties.

Winter camp was very exciting. We had 18 middle and high school students learn the engineering and math in-volved in our ocean-going canoe Noo-kayet. The students learned from Master Carver Duane Pasco and assisted by Randi Purser for the carving classes. Duane has made 3 of our ocean-going canoes and provided an exemplar oppor-tunity for both students and staff. After completing the engineering draft, students learned the names, safe and proper use of the carving knives, and applied math while carving 2 ft. paddles. In preparation for this camp we built a “carving class kit” that includes 16 traditional carving knife sets made by Tribal Elder/Master Carver/Teacher Gene Jones Sr. that we now have for future carving classes.

Every Friday will include a tour around a Heronswood Highlight—a special element in the Garden, be it a plant, bird, insect, or something else. The tour is free with Garden admission. Check Heronswood’s Facebook and Instagram pages for information on each week’s Heronswood Highlight.

Also in April, Heronswood welcomes an exhibit from Duane and Betty Pasco. These master artists, specializing in North-west Coast Salish techniques and materials, will feature carv-ings, weavings, masks, illustrations, and other curated pieces selected by the Pascos. The show begins Friday, April 3 and is open from 10 am to 3 pm, Friday through Sunday through-out April. Last entry is 2:30 pm.

Heronswood’s Plant Sale & Garden Opens continue on April 4 with the Early Spring sale. Other planned dates include May 9 & 10 (Spring), July 18 (Summer), and September 12 (Autumn).

After a strong debut in 2019, Heronswood is continuing its classes taught by Garden Director Dan Hinkley, Heron-swood Taxonomist Ross Bayton, and visiting instructors.

Classes are typically 2-4 hours in length and costs in-clude any materials needed. A schedule of upcoming classes are available in the Classes section on the Her-onswood website.

PGST members receive free entry to all Plant Sales & Garden Opens, weekly Garden opens, and the April art show. They are eligible for Garden Member pricing for all classes.

Join us anytime between 9 am and 4 pm to be counted and have any ques-tions you have about the Census an-swered.

We’re also offering door prizes, Cen-sus swag, and a raffle to be drawn at 4 pm. You’re entered in the raffle just for stopping by and do not need to be present to win.

COMMUNITY NEWS — Construction has begun on the new wellness center, so the driveway and parking lot in front of the library is only for construction vehicles. The library will be open regular hours. Access to the library will be the door facing the longhouse. There is a new book return bin in the gravel parking lot next to the ball field. Please let us know if you have any questions.
