The recently completed development at Portelet and the widely criticised Station House scheme at Corbiere not only highlight my personal concerns but that of parishioners who are increasingly of the opinion that further ill-considered development of our coastline must be avoided at all costs. Protection of our coastal areas against poor development, especially those that border the designated National Park and Green Zone, have become a priority. The Parish Deputies also share my view. ‘Garden grabbing’ is another area of development that in recent years has crept to a point where our Parish characteristics and environment are being severely damaged. To stem what appears to be a tide of inappropriate development in St. Brelade and to protect the unique and acknowledged beauty of its rural areas and natural coastline it has now become important that we take measures to ensure that all new development is also scrutinised by the Parish. It is crucial that parishioners are kept fully advised of schemes, that while directly affecting specific residents, often have much wider implications for the local community, if not the Island as a whole. AS we head into spring and warmer weather, the past three months have provided some exciting moments for the Parish. I am pleased to announce the long awaited completion of Phase One of the Maison St.Brelade Residential Home refurbishment. Head of Home, Mrs Pearl Thebault, the staff, residents and Management Committee have been waiting with baited breath to view the completed wing and we are all extremely pleased with the quality of

finishes provided by builders Hacquoil & Cook. The new wing has been finished to the highest modern day standards with all rooms being ensuite. Phase Two is now underway. My wife, Ann, and I were delighted to accompany Twinning Association Chairman, Julian Bernstein and stand-in Miss St. Brelade Amy O’Brien to the recent Mardi Gras in our twin town of Granville. We were warmly received by our French counterparts with a Vin d’Honneur and vibrant parade, blessed by glorious sunshine, although still a bit chilly especially for Amy! The parade along with a fair was attended by an estimated 50,000 locals and visitors. To my surprise it had a very political theme with the Mayor of Granville barracked over fish quotas and speeding fines, but all in good humour. We recently held our annual Miss St. Brelade competition at which the Parish was fortunate to have four lovely competitors. I am delighted to say that our new Miss St.Brelade is Anne-Marie Mezec who was crowned by previous winner Ellie Stannard. I look forward to working with Anne-Marie and wish her luck with her duties in the coming year. I thank St. Brelade Battle of Flowers Association, the judges and guests for making the evening such a success. I am pleased to report the design for this years float has been decided and hopeful we can match or even improve on the success of 2011. I have over the past weeks enjoyed attending at many of the parishes clubs and associations and have been extremely impressed by the effort and commitment shown by all those involved. As a big football fan,I am pleased that St.Brelade’s Football Club are currently sitting proudly at the top of the Championship and congratulate them on promotion to the Premiership. St Brelade Bowls Club is about to commence their summer season with Les Creux Bowls Club in the process of having their artificial surface laid. Again,I wish both clubs a successful season. On an administrative note ,the parish has had to carry out substantial repairs to the parish refuse depot along with essential maintenance to the Parish Hall. As an election promise I have now situated my own office downstairs at the Parish Hall and should you have an issue to discuss please drop in or give me a call. After over 20 years service to the parish, Mr Reg Langlois has retired as a Procureur du Bien Public. I am saddened by his departure and thank him for his impeccable service. But I am delighted to say that Chef de Police Mr Arthur Morley has now been sworn-in as his successor and equally pleased that “La Baguette” editor Jeff Hathaway, after 18 years of Honorary service, was recently been elected as Centenier to replace Arthur. I wish both new parish officials successful terms of office. Finally both myself and Ann, along with Parish staff and Honorary Police wish all St. Breladais a happy and enjoyable Easter

“THIS will be a busy year for the Parish with many events celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee taking place. I would recommend keeping an eye out in the JEP and other media for details and dates. Honorary officers will be present at most of them and are there primarily to help you and the event organisers, but please take the opportunity to raise and questions or concerns with them on any matter. We may not always be able to give an answer, but we may know someone who can and be able to point you in their direction. Motorists are advised that certain roads in the Parish which were once 40mph limits are now reduced to 30mph.

The affected roads are well signposted, but both the States and Honorary Police will be carrying out speed detection on these roads and many of the ‘hot-spots on many occasions during the year. There will be ‘zero-tolerance’ for offenders, so please observe the limits to avoid either a heavy fine or an appearance before the Magistrate. On a happier note, I am pleased to advise that the Parish now has three new officers, ranging from 20 to 60 years of age. This age difference is seen as being of great asset to the Parish. If you feel you are able to offer some of your time and skills to the Parish, please give me call on 07797 773534" v

Picture this .. Jersey winner

THE winning entrant in the Picture This ..Jersey island-wide photographic competition featured La Caumine a Marie Best, known as the White House in St Ouen’s Bay. Maison St Brelade received more than 300 entries for its the competition but the judges were unanimous with their choice of an image submitted in the Heritage category by James Goode. “This photograph just jumped out at us,” said Director of Home, Pearl Thebault “We loved the colours, the unusual perspective and the whole ambiance of the shot. It just has everything and deserves the £500 top prize.” Islanders were invited to submit photographs in 4 categories which each offered a prize of £100. The winner of the

Seascape category was Monika Baster with a photo of Corbiere Lighthouse; in the Landscape category, Lallie Clarke took top honours for her image of the sand dunes and the Beach category was won by Grant Neale. An exceptional photograph of the Jersey countryside by Leanne Reed took the top prize for the best under sixteen entry Competition organiser, Fiona Walker, expressed her delight at the standard of the entries. “The competition attracted many superb entries and it was difficult to select just one in each category.” She said. The winning photograph will eventually be enlarged and used as a central feature in the entrance hall of the care home, whilst other entries will be displayed throughout Maison St Brelade. v

A RECENT Police initiative in Jersey is geographical policing. Each shift has an area that they are responsible for. In the West of Jersey, the district is St Peter, St Ouen and St Brelade. Overall oversight is provided by Inspector Harry Carre, and PC Jo Carter is the lead uniform officer allocated to this district. She has special training for family liaison, sexual offences liaison and public order

matters, and is fluent in Portuguese and Spanish – all qualifications ideal for working in a small community. Her shift may be daytime, evening or night, and she drives out to patrol the district. She will check in at the Parish Hall for any incidents and reports to follow up, and meets the Chef de Police regularly. She also attends the monthly meetings of the Honorary Police, and

Sticky problemProtest over St. Aubin harbour silt by Tony Bellows

ON New Year’s Day, Roy Deeming used his boat to block the entrance to the harbour as a “peaceful protest” to against the silting up of the harbour. Former Constable Mike Jackson told La Baguette that the silting up of St.Aubins harbour is a perennial problem:

“The design of the harbour is such that the problem has challenged successive Harbour masters since it was built in the 18th and 19th centuries. Opinions differ as to why silting occurs but it seems that a minute layer is added on each tide when it arrives in the harbour under suspension in

the ‘agitated’ water then precipitates out as it settles down. Periods of heavy rain add alluvial deposits from the brook running down through the harbour in addition to the sandy bank which appears at the end of the South arm particularly after a South Westerly storm. It is interesting to note that in days when cargoes were brought into St.Aubin by sailing ship it was mandatory for the vessels to be loaded with this sand and stone as ballast for the return journeys in the event that they were ‘light’ or as was termed ‘in ballast’.” “In recent times, the harbour has been dredged every 12 years. The next dredging will take place in September 2012, and will necessitate the removal of all boats, buoys and chains. Excavators will then be able to set about removing the mud without getting entangled in the myriad of chains and ropes which ‘lurk’ beneath. The end of the year will hopefully see most of the mud cleared. v

they may come out on patrol with her, working together as a team. The Honorary Police today have professional training, and she can use her 131/2 years experience in the States of Jersey Police to give them confidence when handling difficult incidents. There is also good liaison with schools to help children with problems stay out of serious trouble, as part of a multi-agency team; she also gets to know children so they see her as someone approachable for help and assistance. In daytime, she may also be out and about on foot patrol; in St Brelade’s Parish, for example, this could be at Quennevais Precinct, Red Houses or down at St Aubin’s Harbour, where she provides a friendly “bobby on the beat” police presence. She may also be present at public events with the Parishes. The general public may also email her or ring her mobile about possible incidents requiring her presence. When not on shift, calls will be taken by Police HQ. [email protected] Mobile 07797 711553 v

Bonus year for supermarket!WAITROSE Red Houses staff celebrated the announcement of their partnership bonus with a bacon-buttie and champagne breakfast on 7th March. The supermarket chain shares its yearly profits amongst the staff, referred to as ‘partners’, no matter their role.. For 2011 the partnership announced a whopping 14% share - much to the delight of everyone assembled in their Red Houses store dining room. Manage Peter Slater (pictured opposite) told La Baguette. “This is a first for any Jersey company; a reward for our ‘partners’ hard work and dedication. It is a great scheme and one that ensures we have extremely happy partners who maintain very high customer service levels - and therefore happy customers.” v

Twinning Carnival

ASSOCIATION Chairman Julian Bernstein and his wife Martha, together with the Constable Steve Pallett and his wife Ann, travelled to Granville for the towns Annual Carnival. Amy O’Brien was on duty as Miss St Brelade and she took her place next to the 3 young ladies from Granville on their new float. Although the day was dry the wind was very piercing! Francois Requedat helped with the translating as the Constable addressed the gathering on the Sunday morning – the French certainly know how to host a party! Constable Pallet told La Baguette:” It was great weekend of pageantry, parting

and fun. The welcome was tremendous, the hospitality second to none” The Association are keen to hear from any residents of the Parish who would like to join . It has regular get togethers which usually include a meal cooked by the Chairman and his team. Please contact the Membership Secretary – Bev Pasqua on 746100 or Chairman Julian Bernstein on 746353. Please note that due to the Presidential elections in France this coming May/June the Twinning Games have been deferred until 8th June 2013. St Brelade will still be hosting the event. Please let us know if you would like to take part. v

THE new 2012 Miss St. Brelade was chosen at an event held the Parish Hall on Thursday 1st March organised by the St. Brelade Battle of Flowers Association. The show was compéred by Ian Le Sueur, who introduced the contestants: Anna Baklarz, Marie Anne Mezec, Josephine Hervieu Hearmon and Elouisa Simon. The three judges, Ann Pallett, wife of the Constable, Adrian Rivett from Matisse hairdressers and Jenny Anfray, Parish Hall administrator, had a

difficult time in choosing a winner from what were 4 equally deserving contestants. After considerable deliberation Marie Anne Mezec was announced winner. The evening was concluded with a supper in the Parish Hall prepared by Janet Austin, Eddie Le Gros and Ann Pallett. Marie was crowned by the outgoing Miss St. Brelade Ellie Stannard. Constable Pallett thanked Ellie ‘for her great service to the Parish throughout 2011’. v

In this edition, La Baguette features more memories of Don Filleul OBE [86], a former States member, and now a St Brelade Parishioner. IN 1941, when he was 15, Parish resident Don Filleul’s family moved to Beaumont. He recalls that before the Germans began constructing their anti-tank wall that “all there had been between our house and the sea were the remains of Beaumont Station platform and lovely great lumps of golden granite which were the means of protection from the waves.” He remembers the Germans building the concrete wall and the bunker which is now the Gunsite Cafe. “The garrison

was housed in the wooden hut, still there, beside the Round Tower, at the top of which lolled a German soldier with his twin anti-aircraft machine-gun. I recall him ringing his alarm bell and shouting “Achtung Flugzeug” when a reconnaissance Spitfire flew over at about 30,000 feet.” How did people occupy themselves in the Occupation? Don made friends with residents of the district, and became involved with what was called the “Cecil Corbin Concert Party”. Graeme Huelin, a former Deputy in St Brelade, also took part. He also met his wife, Hilary Boniface, who also took part.

The ensemble sang and danced; dancing under the tutelage of Miss Le Caudey of Beaumont. They produced a number of shows held at the Hamon Hall, which was on Mont Les Vaux near to St Aubin’s School. The hall was used for Parish Assemblies, but also was available for private hire. It is now a private dwelling. The most memorable show was “Streamline” which was also taken to a lot of Parish Halls by horse and van. He remembers that “after the show, we were treated with refreshments which revealed the vast difference between farmers’ rations and our own!” v

Branching outAllotments benefit from Mizvah Day by Tony BellowsTwo sweet chestnut trees have been planted at the entrance of Jersey's Les Creux allotments as part of a day of Jewish-led social action. Mitzvah Day, which fell on 20th November 2011, is a special day in the Jewish calendar based on the Jewish values of "tikkun olam" (repairing the world), "tzedek" (righteousness) and "gemilut chassadim" (acts of loving kindness). Jewish congregations take part in community projects to reduce hardship and poverty in the world, and to help the environment. It is a "hands on" day rather than a fund raising event. Planting the trees were Stephen Regal and Martha Bernstein of Jersey’s Jewish Congregation,

with Conrad Evans of Jersey Trees for Life, Judith Davey from St Brelade's Church, Parish Les Creux Allotment Committee member Reg Langlois and Jeff Hathaway, Chairman of the Jersey Allotments and Leisure Gardening Association (JALGA). Jeff Hathaway said: "It's a wonderful gesture and so appropriate at this 'giving' time of year for both the Jewish and Christian communities. We are deeply grateful.” Sweet chestnuts are very versatile and well suited to Les Creux. Apart from producing an edible crop, thay are able to withstand drought and poor soil conditions and are great for wildlife in the area - particularly red squirrels. v

A JERSEY Petanque Club member has proposed the forming of a Parish Petanque Club. Derek Hart, one of the co-founders of the all-island club, told La Baguette: “I am interested in hearing from any parishioners who may like to be involved in forming a St. Brelade Parish Petanque Club. The Jersey Petanque Association is in the process of establishing an Inter Parish Petanque League several parishes have already registered an interest and are setting up their own parish teams. St. Brelade should be part of that league. A St. Brelade Club team could also challenge a team from our twin town of Granville

THE 10th St. Brelade Scout Groups Challenge was completed in January when the group entertained 21 lonely parishioners to a 3 course lunch at their Les Creux Headquarters. Scouts who had volunteered to be in the Design Team met at Grainville School to design and print invitations that were delivered to the Parish Hall. The Parish Hall staff then sent them out to those known be worthy. On the Friday evening both the Design and Chef’s Team met at Les Creux for a weekend stay. The Design Team got down to producing the menus, place settings and table plans. The Chefs Team were then introduced to the final version of their imaginative menu. The menu comprised: Soupe a l’ Oignon de St Brelade (the team’s version of french onion soup), Poulet de St. Aubin (chicken breasts in leek & mushroom sauce) mashed potatoes, peas and a ‘jardinere de legumes.’ Dessert was Tarte du Pommes avec Creme Anglais (apple pie & custard), followed by tea and coffee with ‘gingerbread scouts’. At 1pm the guests were escorted to their tables with the cubs acting as waiters. After lunch the scout’s guests were entertained with campfire songs from the Beavers before Constable Steve Pallett concluded the occasion with words of thanks to all involved.

Thanks to the article in La Baguette and advertising in other parish magazines, St Brelade Bowls Club successfully launched their drive to attract new members last April. The season started with an opportunity for parishioners to ‘Come and Try Bowls Free’ every afternoon for two weeks and followed with the offer of free tuition every Wednesday afternoon throughout the summer. The club enjoyed meeting over 80 people who visited us during the season with 39 deciding to join the Club,

taking club membership to over 200. Each week the Club was buzzing as members welcomed and showed those who came how to enjoy the game of bowls. The success of our programme is summed up by these comments from Liz Simon, an enthusiastic new member: “I joined St Brelade Bowls Club in August after a few weeks of the ‘come and try bowls free’ sessions held on a Wednesday afternoon. I was made to feel very welcome by

The December meeting ended 2011 on a high with Sue Jones again demonstrating her beautiful but simple seasonal flower arrangements. A number ladies ‘had a go’ at making their own versions which, although not quite as polished, were more than suitable for Christmas display. The new year started with a Pyjama Party which meant that, after a hectic evening, members were ready to just fall into bed! Each member brought along a plate of food for a ‘bring & share’ supper. Presentations started the February meeting when a new member was welcomed into the fold and a member celebrated a birthday. We are used to celebrating ‘0’ birthdays with numbers 4 to 9 in front of them, but on this occasion Debbie Le Bailly was presented with a gift to mark her 21st Birthday (pic above). when they next visit in August. A petanque match may provide a sporting opportunity for parishioners to get involved with the twinning. Those interested in playing petanque socially may like a chance to meet up for a game on a more regular basis. Petanque is a very sociable and accessible game. It allows people of all ages to mix together. We are currently looking at areas within the Parish where

a petanque terrain could be put down around which a St. Brelade Parish Petanque Club could be formed. Complete newcomers to the game would be most welcome as we can provide expert tuition and coaching as well as advice on buying the right equipment.” If you are interested or would like more information please contact Derek Hart on 741469 or alternatively e-mail: [email protected]. v

the members helping at the taster sessions. I learnt the techniques and etiquette of the game. It wasn’t long before I was joining in with regular club play in mixed ability groups. The Club members have been very friendly and encouraged me to participate in the end of season competition, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I can’t wait for the new season to start.” Along side this development members achieved much with hundred’s of sessions spent in social, recreational and competitive bowling, participating with great success in Club, Island, Inter-Island and International competitions; every member being encouraged to play at their chosen level. Plans are already in place for the 2012 season. The very successful ‘Come and Try Bowls Free’ initiative will return. Tuition and bowls will be provided and casual dress and trainers are all that are required: • April 14th – 28th inclusive every afternoon at 2pm • From May 3rd to September 27th every Thursday afternoon at 2.00pm • By appointment (to suit you) any day, any time 10.00am, 2.00pm or 6.00pm. St. Brelade youth musicians win national Arts Awards

TWO young parish musicians, Honor Butel (13) from Les Quennevais School and former Quennevais pupil, Joe Chadd (17) have received Bronze Arts Awards. They were joined by Robbie Clark (16) from De La Salle as the first ever young people from Jersey to win one of the national accolades through the La Motte Street Youth Project. Honor Butel is a keyboard player and singer and has undertaken rock schools with La Motte Street Project building up a wealth of experience in musicianship and performance. Honor said: “ I really enjoyed doing it and collecting the information. It

taught me how to manage my time and to think about what I have been doing. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone else. Joe Chadd, who left Les Quennevais School in 2011, was a vocalist on the very first la Motte Street Rock School. He has since been involved with the Gig School and many drama, dance and arts events during his schoolyears. Joe said: “ I’m into showbiz, skills

and dramatics and this has given me a good chance to see what everyone else is doing. It’s been really rewarding. The Arts Awards were launched in the UK in 2005 to encourage 11-25 year olds to engage with the arts. The awards were introduced to Jersey through the 2010 Council for Culture Conference. Rod McLoughlin, Jersey’s Cultural Development Officer said: “Young people

who take part can explore any art form.” To win the award, the students had to create a portfolio that showed 40 hours of work on their own performances and projects; evidence of teaching an artistic skills to others; research into a different artistic discipline; and research into an inspirational figure from the arts world. The portfolio was assessed by Ivor Richards the senior youth officer at La Motte Street who has trained as an Arts Award adviser. ‘These awards are regarded as the arts equivalent of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme, so is a significant qualification. This was a pilot scheme for Jersey but it has been a great success so we hope to expand it in the future” said Mr Richards. The Arts Award is a scheme operated by Trinity College London with support from the UK Arts Council. v

pupils at Les Quennevais School, shone with 3 out of 4 podium finishes. The Jersey boys were placed second in both the Aquatic Initiative Test and Life Support Incident and third in the Line Throw event. JARC Chairman Alan Le Pavoux said: “Drowning is still the biggest cause of accidental death in the world according to the World Health Organisation. The skills the youngsters learn at our Club training sessions enable them to look after themselves and be safe in and around water. They also learn how to rescue others in trouble in all kinds of aquatic situations. The competitions we enter give the Club a focus and keep the competitor’s skills and fitness honed.” v

REG’S Garden is to be the venue for a St. Brelade Country Fete to celebrate the Queens Jubilee this summer. Garden owner Reg Langlois told La Baguette: “There is a lot of work to do before finalising the exact detail, but we are also hoping that a small profit can be made out of entrances so we can also make a a donation to local charities. But what I can say is that we are planning entertainment and food all day. This could be the biggest event that we have ever had in the garden!”

IT’S now fourteen years since the Jersey Evening Post West Show became an important part of the Island’s summer calendar. The Island’s largest country show is now held every two years and takes place this summer over the weekend of 7 and 8 July at Manor Farm in St Peter. In 2010, around 15,000 visitors attended the show – and a similar number is expected this year. The JEP West Show celebrates all that is still good about Jersey, and remembers parts of Island life that have been

A SPARKLING Diamond Jubilee Party will be held in St Aubin on Tuesday 5th June 2012. St Aubin Residents’ Association, together with The Boathouse Group and Jersey Variety Club, is organising this party for which there will be 300 tickets. It will take place in front of the Parish Hall; inside if it should dare to rain! The fun will commence at 12 noon with entertainment and music arranged by The Variety Club. A fish and chip, apple crumble and custard lunch from 2pm, will be provided and served by the Boathouse staff. Steve Pallett, the Connetable, with his family, will be opening the Day and it is hoped that the Lieutenant Governor or the Bailiff will call in too. Fancy coming along in “Royal” fancy dress? Of course, this is optional, but it adds to the fun of the occasion! There’ll be a

DESPITE losing out of the Trinity Shield earlier in the year, St. Brelade Football Club have otherwise had a great league season. Following a 2-0 win over St. John on Saturday 17th March, their promotion was assured. After a tense first half, the last 45 minutes saw the team take control and find the back of the net twice to put them in an

unassailable position for promotion. With just one more point needed, will likely finish top of the league. With a semi-final against Portuguese FC in the Touzel Cup a league and cup double beckons. St. Brelade Manager, Gary MacDonald says that he puts “The Reds’ league success down to working hard on passing the ball in training” v

AT the first AGM of Les Creux Allotment Association, the Steering Group stood down to make way for a new committee made up from the plotholders themselves. The meeting was attended by Constable Steve Pallet, Constable Mezbourian of St. Lawrence, Senator Alan Breckon and Tony Andrews of St. Helier Parks & Gardens, and also Graeme Le Marquand, Nora Traynor and Val Marshman of the newly formed Jersey Branch of the National Vegetable Society. Guest speaker was Sue Rodrigues, just back from her summer duties as a judge for ‘Entente Florale’. Sue commented upon allotments she had seen on her travels and described Les Creux as ‘amongst the best’. The meeting was extremely pleased to see Chris Vibert, wife of the late Mike Vibert, the Association’s first Chairman accept a nomination to serve on the new Committee.

CLOUDY skies in February didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the Jersey Astronomy Club. At their meeting at the Patrick Moore Astronomy Center, members enjoyed a “Pub Quiz and Bean Crock Night” with bean crock (both meat and vegetarian styles) and bread, provided by Rosemary & Tony Isherwood, Olive Lawrence & Jodie Masterman. Regulars were joined by the Constable, Steve Pallett and his wife and a ‘scratch team’ from La Baguette.

After the meal, the 20 question quiz ranged from simple astronomy posers such as “What is the largest planet in our solar system?” to more difficult ones such as: “Oh be a fine girl, kiss me right now!. What do the first letters of the words represent” (It is a mnemonic for remembering different kinds of stars). The prize, a Concise Guide to Astronomy, was awarded to youngster Tom who won the quiz with 18 points. The La Baguette team managed a

creditable 16. The Constable won the consolation prize - with 1 point! All those interested in astronomy are welcome at the club's meetings at 8:00 p.m on the 2nd Monday of each month. For more information, please contact the Secretary: Jodie Masterman by email at: [email protected] or ring Jodie on 07797813681. Children are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult. v

Raising awareness of Parkinson’s Disease by Tony Bellows

FROM 9th February to 3rd March 2012, there was an exhibition of paintings by Nicki Baudains at The Harbour Gallery, St Aubin. Entitled “Retrospective of Progress”, it was a solo exhibition to raise awareness of early onset Parkinson’s disease, and also funding for local support.

The exhibition was officially opened by Murray Norton. Nicki was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s disease around three years ago. She noticed that while doing face painting with students at school, her left arm would become immobile, and the same “freezing up” happened to her left side

LENT is traditionally a time for giving up, and giving to others. Part of the Parish fund raising for Christian Aid during Lent is by Lent Lunches, which take place at St Brelade's Parish Hall on Fridays between noon and 2.00 pm, and are provided by members of St Brelade's Churches, each Church acting in rotation on successive Fridays. For a modest donation, there is simple and tasty fare to enjoy - freshly made soups, bread, crackers and cheese (donated by Waitrose), with tea or coffee. The final lunch, Good Friday on April 6, 2012, always has two soups, one of which is Conger Eel Soup, a popular Jersey dish, cooked by the chef at Maison St Brelade.

Here is a recipe from the Jersey Island Federation of the Womens Institute: 11/2 lbs of conger eel, 3 pints of water, 1 heart of cabbage, chopped, 2 leeks, Parsley, thyme and the petals of a marigold. 1 quart of Jersey Milk 1 oz of Jersey Butter. Boil conger in the water for three hours, strain and keep liquid. Remove the fish from the bone and return to the pot with the vegetables and marigold and season to taste. Bring to then boil and then add milk and butter to serve. v

Supper Church new format‘Opportunity to share thoughts’ say organisers by Tony BellowsTHE popular "Supper Church" is continuing from April to September this year, but with a slightly different format. Supper Church meets in the upstairs room at the Smuggler's Inn, Ouaisne, usually on the first Thursday of every month, with a two course meal, drink and coffee, together an informal friendly discussion on a Christian theme. Jo Mulliner from St Brelade's Church, who organises it alongside Brian Clarke also from St, Brelade's Church, says that "We will have a short introduction talk, followed by an open ended discussion at

our tables while we eat, to assist the discussion some quotations will be handed out, and then we will give everyone an opportunity to share their thoughts and bring these views together over coffee." The first time is free and thereafter is £15 for those who can afford to pay and a contribution if possible from those who can't pay. Everyone is welcome. The Theme for the summer programme is "What do Christians believe?" and will start on Wednesday 4th April (7pm) with the question: " Who is Jesus?" v

MARKLAND Hall, Communicare every Wednesday morning is the venue for a group of knitters from the Friendship Group busily knitting and chatting for a very worthwhile cause. They knit squares that are put together to create blankets that are collected by Rosemary Coote MBE of the Friends of Ecco Homo Trust. The large blankets are given to needy elderly people and smaller cot-sized ones are given to babies in poor and needy families in Romania. The Friendship Group have been doing this for 14 years and

the knitters don’t always just knit at meetings as any squares that they do at home are brought along and put together. Stripey blankets are done with odd small amounts of wool and someone who can crochet makes a good edging to the completed blankets. They are making a plea for anyone who can donate wool to telephone reception at Communicare and leave a message. Volunteers can collect if it’s a problem to drop it off there. Double-ply is mostly used but anything will be used and very much appreciated. v

There’s more to Steve than just being the public face of Condor by Jeff Hathaway

A profile of Steve Bailey, who apart from his job as Jersey Director of Operations for Condor Ferries is very much a Parish man with a love of country pursuits, game fishing, gardening, boating and cricket. PUBLIC perceptions of someone can often be misleading. That is very much true of Steve - being a rather more modest man that you would expect.

Born in Hampshire, his first choice of career was in the Police Force, but instead soon found himself in the Channel Islands working in the leisure industry. First for a tour operator before becoming the Commercial Manager for AirUK, and then as Jersey Director for Condor Ferries, part of the then Commodore Shipping Group. Steve told La Baguette: “I joined Condor in 1988 at the time they were introducing the big cats and the Commodore Clipper also being added to the fleet. In what is a difficult and seasonally sensitive market, like any business in the current tough times we constantly need to review demand and tailor our services in order to survive. It’s a fine balancing act.” Although having a demanding job, Steve finds time to not only help in the Parish, but also follow many leisure pursuits. He is particularly proud of his achievements on his allotment plot at Les Creux where he grows a wide variety of vegetables. He revealed too that he likes walking in the countryside and along Jersey’s coastline and to absorb himself in game fishing both in fresh and salt water, He fishes the chalk streams of his native Hampshire for trout

when doing every day actions like walking up stairs. “I’d reach the top stair, and then my leg just wouldn’t move”, said Nicki. Many people have the idea that Parkinson’s disease is to do with involuntary shaking and tremors but just as common is involuntary rigidity where the sufferer freezes into immobility. There is a lack of dopamine in the brain, so that signals to move limbs do not work properly. Another misconception is about age. Eileen Smith, the Chairlady of the local Parkinson’s disease society spoke at the official opening of the exhibition, and said that it could strike people of any age. Medication could help to keep it on a plateau for around 20 years, but even the best drugs had some side effects. But some of these could be beneficial. In Nicki’s case, after taking medication, “suddenly there were all these colours and ideas in my head, I just needed to get them onto canvas”. The Jersey Branch of Parkinsons UK meet at the Priory, Devil's Hole, St Mary every fourth Tuesday of the month (except Dec) at 12.30pm. whenever he can and has also experienced big game fishing in New Zealands’ Bay of Islands, made famous by Ernest Hemmingway, and now regarded as one of best big game fish areas in the world. New Zealand remains his favourite holiday destination. It is perhaps not surprising either that a born Hampshire man he should love his cricket too, and play whenever he can - or is invited to! Steve has also helped the Parish and parishioners on several occasions. Just recently he organised a large water tank to be shipped into Jersey for the Les Creux allotments as well as arranging the import of the tree that graced the Parish Hall last Christmas - both without charge. A resident of St. Aubin, Steve shares his life with Jenny, his partner of 15 years, who enjoys many of the same pastimes and pursuits - especially their boat which is moored in St Aubins Harbour. Steve said: ” I love Jersey, I love this Parish I love St. Aubin, I love my job, and I love the outdoor opportunities that the Island is so rich in - what more could I want. It really is a privilege, to be a part of a vibrant community such as we have in St. Brelade” v

Easter letter from Mark Bond, Parish Rector.

NO, not a barbecue on wheels or a picnic eaten while driving! I’m talking about Easter; the most important day of the Christian year which seems to move around in an apparently random way. But, of course, it’s not random. A ‘moveable feast’, is simply one which is not tied to a particular date in the calendar. Christmas, which is always the 25th December, is a ‘non-moveable’ or ‘fixed feast’, so it doesn’t matter which day it falls on. The complication comes when Christmas falls at a weekend and you have to work out where all those bank holidays fit in.

Easter, as a ‘moveable feast’ means that the ‘Day’ always falls on a Sunday whatever the date, with Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday before it and Easter Bank Holiday Monday the day after. So where did all this begin? The first Council of Nicaea (AD325) set the date of Easter as..” the first Sunday after the full moon following the northern hemisphere’s vernal equinox.” – that is after March 20/21 when the hours of daylight equal the hours of night half way between the Summer and Winter Solstices. All this means is that Easter can fall anywhere from March 22nd to April 25th in the western tradition. The eastern churches calculate Easter differently as they use another calendar, but that’s another story... The ‘Moveable Feast’ nature of Easter is clearly there from the earliest records of the 2nd century. So the obvious thing is to look for a similar feast in the worshipping life of the early church. This was based around the worship of the Jewish community out of which many early Christians came. So, the most important Jewish festival at this time is Passover – when the Jewish people remember the freedom God gave them as

he liberated them from slavery in Egypt. Clearly, there is much symbolism in both festivals which ties them closely together, though it is difficult to say definitively that one comes out of the other. However, if you’ve ever attended a Passover meal – like ours on Maundy Thursday, you cannot avoid the obvious connections Jesus made between the Passover sacrifice (a young lamb) and himself. Equally, the bread and wine we use Sunday by Sunday are an integral part of the Passover ceremonies and devotions and Jesus reinterprets them in his particular way. Easter is, in fact, a complex mix of traditions, symbols, religion, language, feelings and experience. We each make of it what we will and, like Christmas, families develop their own traditions and activities as well. The timing of Easter is just one part of this complex season made up, as it is, of many strands and influences. So, however you celebrate yours, may I wish you, and those you love, a very Happy Easter! v
