W ith the re-cent hurri-

cane so much in the news, I was re-minded of how m a n y p e o p l e across the United States call Texas home part of the year. During our recent travels to and from the Michi-gan rally, we en-countered count-less Airstreamers who called the

Texas Gulf Coast their second homes. Many only knew of Lubbock from past travels to their winter homes in towns across the Gulf but all had positive comments about their days spent in Texas. One couple said that they had tried Arizona and Florida, but that the friendli-ness of Texas drew them back each year. It is this wel-coming, neighbor-helping- neighbor spirit, that has been on display during the past days. As we watch helplessly from the comfort of our homes, we see the sacrifices that others have made and continue to make to rescue stranded families, feed and shelter the displaced, and start the clean-up process. We salute them all.

Joan and I were unable to attend the latest rally in Ruidoso, but by all accounts, it was a grand success. Keith and Janice Collier opened their home to host the arrival evening meal. The following days were filled with games, ex-ploring Ruidoso, eating, and good fellowship. An informal memorial was

held one evening as members shared stories and re-called special times spent with our beloved member Sam Spence. He was a fine gentleman who left a lasting impact, and he will definitely be missed. We are sorry that we were unable to make the trip, and realize that these times spent together is what makes our club special.

With only two rallies left this season, I encourage all members to make an effort to attend. The Good-lett Township Rally at the Ole Town Cotton Gin RV Park has been put in place of the Quanah Rally and will be a “no host” rally. Joan and I along with the Clarks are in process of planning the final rally of the year in Ft. Davis and are looking forward to seeing everyone there.

What Does a " Buddy Rally" Really Mean?

I have heard that this or that rally will be a "Buddy Rally" for the many years we

have been Airstreamers. Until this past weekend, I did not give it much thought. It kind of seemed self ex-planatory, but I think it needs more exploration. Our unit has just returned from a rally in Ruidoso, New Mexico, which was identified as a Buddy Rally. So a few of us invited guests to attend. There were 3 cou-ples who are not members who attended as our guests.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the beauty and cool of the mountains of New Mexico. Many of our members attended, several we had not seen in quite some time. The guests who attended made this rally a much more enjoyable event for all of us in our unit. I think I was most surprised by the effect that we had on them. They each told us, sometimes with great emo-tion, how much they enjoyed being a part of our group. They thanked us for sharing our camaraderie;

they loved the fun we had at our Joker Tournament, Skit In a Bag, and Bingo Night. They said they enjoyed the group meals and museum tours, but most especially just sitting under the awnings visiting and getting to know each other.

The Buddy Rally gave our guests the gifts of friends, laughter, and fun. Amazingly, these are the same gifts our rallies give to us as members. The actual definition of the word Gift is something given to someone for free without the expectation of repayment. We also each re-ceived the gift of these guests. It was a free gift, and we did not have to pay it back. Please remember, if you do not come to the rallies, you can still be a member of our unit, still be a WBCCI member. If you are not coming to our rallies, you are missing out on many of the reasons you joined this group. It is our time to catch up with each other's lives, times to laugh together and to cry together. We need you, and you need us. Without those of you who attended the Buddy Rally in Ruidoso, our guests would not have had the experience of what it means to be an Airstreamer. Thank you for attending and for participat-ing, for showing our invited "buddies" who we are and what we do. Thank you for helping those who might have come to the rally as strangers, to leave as our friends.

Also, we are preparing the membership directory for next year, and if you would like to change your picture in the directory, please send David Thompson a new picture of you. There are some members who do not have any picture of themselves, and we would love to have current pictures. These pictures need to be sent by the end of September.

We have had another member decide it is time to give up Airstreaming. Because of health issues Keith and Janice Collier are selling their motorhome. We ask that you keep them in your prayers.

Skit in a bag is just what it sounds like. Each team was given a large bag of miscellaneous items and told to make a skit, whether it be a song, poem, play, or whatever there brains could conceive. There were six groups and they spent several hours in individual groups, scheming, planning, laughing, brain storming, and just having a good time planning their masterpiece.

Every newsletter has to have a picture or two of people eating. That is one of the things we do best. We find some good restaurants, and some not so good ones.

We have some of the best cooks in the state, and our pot luck dinners are al-ways very good.
