From the General Manager’s Desk
Paul Kroll, CCM General Manager
On January 24 a group of members gathered in Carmichael’s Pub for a ceremony to retire and install Mr. Dan Carmichael’s speed bag above the bar in the restaurant. The ceremony was led by ACC member Jim Merkel, who gave a brief history of Mr. Carmichael’s athletic endeavors as well as stories from Mr. Carmichael’s military past and more.
In 1996, Mr. Merkel commented that “he let the word get to Dan that when he was done hitting the speed bag, I wanted it for Carmichael’s.” About four months ago, the speed bag ended up in Mr. Merkel’s locker --- at the age of 94, Mr. Carmichael had retired his speed bag.
Thanks to the generosity of Jim Merkel and Bob Schmitz, the speed bag, now mounted with a plaque, sits atop the bar in Carmichael’s Pub for all members to enjoy!
When “Good Enough” is not Good Enough
In just three short years, the Club has undergone a noticeable positive shift in everything from membership to programming to private events. These recent changes can in a small way be attributed to the economy, but in a much larger way, they are a direct response to the expectations and needs of our members.
A sour economy forced us to take a good hard look at who we are, what is important to us, and how we can continue to grow and thrive in to the future. Our member committees have defined charters to keep us true to our mission, a strategic plan has been developed to guide our actions, and our Board of Directors is a well-balanced team that considers major decisions to chart our course. Through the lean years, the prudent course has been “steady as she goes,” or just keep things, “good enough.”
Through these post-recession years, private club members across the country have demonstrated a new trend. Clubs have found that regardless of income status, a membership will no longer be retained that does not offer clear value to the member. This trend comes on the heels of mass membership departures, so many clubs, The ACC included, have been able to react promptly. We adjusted our operations to emphasize areas of interest (more child care, more group classes, easier event space booking) in order to step up the value offered by the ACC. We also increased programming to more accurately represent our Club’s demographics (more family events, added wine tastings, and recognition of senior members). By listening closely to our members, by taking bold steps (joint venture with Columbus Country Club) and by providing the comfortable and welcoming atmosphere that is the hallmark of the ACC, we are now in a position to make some major financial investments in our Club.
“Good enough” is no longer good enough. It is imperative that we make investments in our Club that will ensure continued satisfaction for our current members as well
as attract more new members to the ACC family. We are successfully overcoming the financial shortfalls of recent years and are now able to handle basic projects like replacement of decades-old carpeting and purchasing much- needed kitchen equipment.
Plus, we are planning much bigger projects that will have a direct and immediate impact on the Club. In the very near future, look for the dramatic renovation/reconstruction of our bowling lanes. It is an ambitious project that has long been in consideration, and is now poised to become reality. Stay tuned for details of this exciting project.

Below is an overview of the committees and tips on how to join. To begin your Board journey, or just to have a say in Club activities, volunteer for one of these six committees:
Associate Committee - to engage all members, with a special focus on the Associate category, in planning and promoting Club events & activities.Contact: Stacey Whitis [email protected]

Children & Family Programming – to develop and promote activities/programs for the children and families of the ACC. Contact: Sarah Favara [email protected]

In February I became the new President of the Athletic Club of Columbus, an honor and responsibility that I gratefully accept. In 100 years, our club has had many exceptional leaders who have successfully kept true to our mission to provide a healthy outlet for business, family and social connections. It is this mission which will drive us as we look to the future, but first we must thank those who served the Club so well.
Our outgoing President, Lisa Antolino, did a phenomenal job of representing us during our important Centennial year. Lisa led the Club with grace and vision through many challenges over the past year --- from clarifying our mission through a targeted strategic plan, to revising aspects of the joint venture with a Country Club, to some major decisions regarding capital expenditures. When you see her at the Club, please thank her for her many hours of dedication to the ACC way.
Mark Collins left the Board in February, and we bid him a fond farewell as a Past President. His maverick leadership style, combined with creative thinking and courage to move boldly, were big factors in the creation of the City Club/Country Club model from which we all benefit. He truly gained consensus and support among our membership for an idea that at the time seemed revolutionary but has proven beneficial. Perhaps more importantly, the model is continually being refined, and may well be repeatable. We will miss Mark’s contributions at the Board level.
Luckily, as has been the history of our Club, when “old” leaders go, new and talented leaders emerge. This year, we welcome new Board member Mark Sell. Mark’s vast committee experiences and creativitysupplement the talents of our existing Board. Mark has been a loyal and active member for many years, he has worked tirelessly on the joint venture, he has acted in a number of leadership roles at the Club, and his varied professional experience will be a major asset to us. We look forward to his contributions.
With that brief nod to those Board members who have led us and will lead us, I accept the challenge of helping guide the Club for the next 12 months. Along with our General Manager Paul Kroll and his wonderful and dedicated staff, we will continue to thrive and grow as the area’s premier private club.
Your input is always welcome, and always helpful. Please feel free to contact me with thoughts, comments, or suggestions as we begin the next 100 years of The Athletic Club of Columbus. See you around the Club.

Hi, my name is Reginald Henderson and I’m the Aquatic Director at the ACC. If you have not seen me or met me before, please come poolside to chat!
Over the past few months, the pool has been filled with activity, from Scuba classes to Aqua Gym for the kids to our intense Master Swim program in the mornings. If you have yet to “take a dip,” I challenge you to come to the pool and find an activity that works for you!
If a water workout is what you’re looking for, the staff is eager to work with you to implement a regimen that can match the intensity of workouts that you do in other areas of the athletic facility. The biggest difference with water workouts is not only does the water gives you a resistance force on the body, but it also gives you opposing force to give you "softer" impact on the joints and bones. In the long run, your joints and bones will thank you!
Getting involved in aquatics will give you a better, healthier, and stronger you. Bring your family with you to enjoy the water and exercise with you! When you bring the family to the pool, exercise does not have to be a chore. Planning a family pool day is killing two birds with one stone. You get your workout in and still have quality time with the family. Swimming with your family is a great change of pace and offers something new for you to experience together at the ACC.
Our busy schedule of programs will continue into the Spring! Below is a listing of our offerings in the months of March and April. Please check the ACC website calendar for more information regarding these events and programs.
• March 3: “Tri'd it....Loved it!” Indoor Triathlon• March 22: AquaGym• March 23 – April 13: Saturday Adult Stroke Clinic and Tri Training ($60 for Stroke Clinic/$80 for Tri Training)• March 24: Columbus Scuba, Inc. Social• April 6 – May 18: Saturday Swim Lessons for Kids
Lastly, we are always looking to add more to the calendar! Please contact me if you are interested in any of these programs/events:• Masters Swim at CCC/swimming "field trips" to other facilities • Water Polo in the summer • Private Swim Lessons for families• Scuba Club (scuba trip to Roatan, Honduras) • Water Cross Fit class • Water Tai Chi class • AquaGym Parties • Evening Water Aerobics classes• Water Zumba (evening or morning) • Triathlete training
Please contact me if you have any questions. I look forward to seeing you and your family at the pool!
