public policy

Our community made great strides and accomplished much during the 2019 legislative session as business, non-profit, and government leaders rallied together to advocate for legislation and funding to strengthen our region. There is no doubt our community has a unique ability to collaborate for the common good. We must commend our state legislative delegation; if not for their service and the work of the local legislators that preceded them, we would not be the beneficiaries of a region that is a top destination for our visitors and residents to live, work, play, and own a business.

The Manatee Chamber recognizes that maintaining a strong business environment requires investment and State funding. Our legislative advocacy this past session placed great importance on state budgetary items related to water quality, education, healthcare, transportation, infrastructure, housing, and workforce development. It was a long, important list.

When Governor DeSantis took office in January one priority for us was to ensure Manatee County priorities were on his radar. The Chamber corresponded with the Governor and his team prior to and after the legislative session emphasizing our position on a number of items. Whether you were on the left or the right of the partisan dial, we found the Governor was in the middle when it came to the budget. Our community had several Chamber-backed legislative highlights recently approved by the Governor as he signed off on the 2019 Florida Budget in late June.

$1,000,000 for Psychiatric Residency for Centerstone - Allowing Centerstone to expand its psychiatric residency program to address a statewide shortage in this specialty area and meet the needs of Florida families.

$2,000,000 increase for performance-based industry certifications for technical colleges statewide, $2,150,000 to establish the Nursing Center of Excellence at State College of Florida (SCF), $2,022,021 to renovate and add to SCF’s Science Laboratory Building on the Bradenton Campus - Funding our public post-secondary institutions provides robust workforce programming and is essential to our region’s ability to develop a highly skilled workforce.

$10,000,000 for funding the 44th Avenue Extension project in Manatee County - This is a critically important roadway project that will connect Lakewood Ranch (East County) to our Barrier Islands (West County). This transportation improvement will provide significant traffic congestion relief to parallel-running state roads and improve safety.

$50,000,000 for VISIT Florida, $40,000,000 for the Job Growth Grant Fund to proactively market the state as a top destination for visitors and develop workforce training programs and community infrastructure.

$25,000,000 toward addressing blue-green and red tide algal blooms, $3,000,000 in recurring funding for the next six years for red tide research at Mote Marine Laboratory.

$700,000,000 increase over the 2018 budget for K-12 education - We are moving in the right direction and we will continue to advocate for adequate funding to strengthen our public schools.

A reduction in the Florida Commercial Lease Tax from 5.7% to 5.5% - The Chamber supports the elimination of this tax over time and we are pleased our state lawmakers are moving in the right direction.

Additionally, advocating for Florida’s housing trust funds (Sadowski Act) to be used solely for housing programs remains a priority of the Chamber. Despite the legislature dipping into these funds again this year, we saw an increase of funds directed toward housing and, more importantly, a substantial amount of discussion among state leadership in the Senate, House, and the Governor’s Office regarding the protection of these funds.

The Chamber’s Legislative Committee ramps up our state legislative and policy discussion in August as we prepare to lay out the Chamber’s 2020 legislative priorities.

Please join us on Tuesday, December 3 for our Annual Pancakes & Politics event to learn more about your Chamber’s priorities, what’s on our “unfinished business” list, and have open dialogue with our local delegation before they head up to Tallahassee.

FROM A MEMBER'SPERSPECTIVE

"The Chamber brings a tremendous amount of value to Sokos Social. That value is more than financial - in terms of deals closed impacting our company’s bottom line. What matters more to me as a business owner is the intrinsic, immeasurable value that comes along with being part of something bigger than ourselves. It’s the value earned through relationships that are strengthened at networking events, the strategies and tactics learned at workshops, and the sense of community that provided a warm welcome for an employee new to our area." -Eleni Sokos, Sokos Social

"We immediately joined the Chamber as a new business due to their commitment to strengthen our community as a whole. It is our pleasure to be part of this organization!" -J.B. Taylor, Taylor Studios, Inc.

"Our relationship with the Better Business Council has provided an incredible stream of referrals for our firm. And the resource of locating quality BBC businesses and services we need is just as valuable. It’s reassuring to know that all BBC members have met a stringent review of licensing, insurance, references and past performance that set the highest of standards in our business community." -George Manson, Manson Roofing

"I have participated in Project Teach for more than 8 years now. Each time is unique and different working with a new class of fourth graders. To think that I have the privilege of potentially influencing their future is a tremendous honor. The Big Bank Theory is another dynamic program for High School Seniors. Watching the light bulbs go off in their heads how being an adult is difficult and expensive is invaluable." -Karen Rutherford , The JOY FM 88.1

Networking. Relationships. Accountability. Involvement. Hard work. Passion. Three successful small business owners—and past Small Business of the Year winners—know this firsthand though 85 years of combined experience. At our May Headliners event, we welcomed Mary Forristall, Forristall Enterprises; John Horne, Anna Maria Oyster Bar; and Don Ide, The Trophy Case to share the secrets to their success. Attendees received advice on running a business and building relationships - both internally and externally - as well as hearing behind-the-scenes humorous (and some outrageous) stories and anecdotes from the panel.

Winners Congratulations! The Manatee Chamber named its 2019 Champions of Healthcare at a fabulous awards breakfast on June 20. With a crowd of more than 300 people in attendance, our event honored 70 nominees, 21 finalists, and 9 award winners.

"We received tremendous support for the Champions of Healthcare Awards again this year," said Jacki Dezelski, President and CEO of the Manatee Chamber. "We celebrate the important work so many people, programs, business and institutions are doing in Manatee County to support healthcare access and delivery, particularly work that is above and beyond anyone's 'day job.' The awards are designed to recognize impact, excellence, and dedication. The Champions of

Healthcare Awards has become a signature program and this year's event is a testament to the amazing work being done in our community. Added to that is what a great morning it is! We're usually moved to tears because of the generosity and service we hear about during the program."

Plans are already under way for next year's program and it is not too early to begin thinking about nominating a deserving individual, organization, business or program for the awards. It's also not too early to secure your sponsorship for the 2020 Champions of Healthcare Awards. Please contact Carey Miller at 941-748-4842, ext. 113.

coffee club

It was our pleasure to host the May Manatee Chamber Coffee Club! Conley Buick GMC is a 3rd generation family-owned business and is proud to be a part of the fabric of this community. For the Conley family, it’s more than car buying. It’s building relationships, community contribution and impacting lives.

Each year, the dealership and its employees are involved in creating and supporting numerous events. We develop and host the Conley Invitational Bull Riding at the Manatee County Fairgrounds, which supports Manatee County 4-H, every January. In February, the dealership partners with the CCA for their annual banquet at the Bradenton Area Convention Center. The Conley family has helped grow this event into the largest CCA banquet in the state! Additionally, we support and sponsor numerous charity golf tournaments, animal advocacy events as well as Manatee and Palmetto High sports programs. To end the year, we join with 92.1 CTQ on the Marine Corp Toys for Tots toy drive.

Thank you for joining us at Conley where you receive the Conley Lifetime Limited Powertrain Warranty with your car purchase.

business after hours

Thanks to everyone for attending the Manatee Chamber of Commerce After Hours event in June at The Windsor of Bradenton. As your neighborhood assisted living community, we have been looking forward to hosting this wonderful community event allowing you all to network and enjoy food prepared by our Chefs. This event allowed us to showcase our wonderful boutique-sized community and demonstrate the caring and compassionate environment that allows our residents to feel at home. Our goal continues to be to promote the mind, body, and spirit of those who live here and we hope that you were all able to get a glimpse of that while you were here.

If anyone has questions about The Windsor of Bradenton and Legend Senior Living, please give us a call. Likewise, if you know of anyone whom might need a community like ours or someone who is having difficulties with their role of being a caregiver, we would be happy to schedule a visit to meet them. We look forward to seeing you all at future events!
