President’s MessagePresident’s MessageIn writing this article I reference back to ourPipeline Issue from the Fall of 2004 wherethe President, at that time, Robert Griggssaid “Well it's been a crazy year with steelprices at record highs and availability ofsome items getting tricky”. This was fouryears ago and isn't it funny how it fitstoday's scenario perfectly?

One thing that has changed tremendouslysince 2004 is our organization, look howwe have grown in numbers and strength.Our staff has continued to exceed all of ourexpectations, the meetings have continuedto add value to our business operations andthe membership has grown and benefittedimmensely.

This fall in Boston will be my last officialmeeting as President and I cannot expressenough how honored I have felt in thisposition. With continued involvementand dedication of so many great members

and staff the future for our organizationcontinues to look very bright.

Northwest Pipe CompanyAnnounces HoustonExpansion

VANCOUVER, WA -- Northwest PipeCompany (NASDAQ: NWPX) announcedplans to construct a new tubular productspipe manufacturing facility in theHouston, Texas area. The Company isfinalizing site location and permittingissues and expects to begin constructionthis summer. The Company expects thenew facility to begin operations by April2009. The new facility will focus on

producing casing pipe for the Oil CountryTubular Goods ("OCTG") market.

"Our energy pipe business has grownsubstantially over the last few years," saidBrian W. Dunham, CEO and president ofNorthwest Pipe Company. "We seeadditional opportunities, particularly in thisregion of the country. This expansion willenable us to participate in the market for

pipe used in gas exploration, which willcomplement our existing position in pipeused for gas gathering and transmission."

While this will be a new facility, theCompany already has the necessaryequipment located in Portland, Oregon."We will redeploy a complete and recentlymodernized production line to address this

TMK CompletesTransaction to AcquireIPSCO U.S. Assets

TMK, one of the world’s largest oil and gaspipe producers, announced in June that itcompleted the acquisition of the UScompanies and assets of IPSCO Tubular’sbusiness from SSAB Svenkst Stal ABunder a back-to-back transaction withEvraz S.A. (Evraz).

TMK acquired 100% of share capital inIPSCO Tubulars Inc. and 51% of sharecapital in NS Group Inc. for approximately1.25 billion USD. TMK and Evraz havealso entered into a call/put option for theremaining 49% of NS Group Inc. whichmay be exercised for approximately $0.5billion subject to certain adjustments.

The purchase of IPSCO Tubular’s USassets is an essential part of TMK’s strategyto expand the company’s global presenceand increase offer of high-tech, premium-class, tubular goods for the oil and gasindustry.

TMK acquired ten production sites in sevenStates with combined pipe productioncapacity over one million tonnes, includingabout 300 thousand tonnes of seamlesspipes and in-house steelmaking capacity of450 thousand tonnes of billets per year. Inaddition to pipe rolling and steelmaking

Amazing Productivity Increasewith No Additional Resources

There are many ways to improveproductivity investing in technology,utilizing time management techniques,outsourcing purely administrative taskseven proper document control. But the onething that all organizations have in commonare people and the processes that theyperform.

Frequently, issues affect those people andprocesses resulting in less than optimumproductivity. Some of the factors thatcontribute to substandard productivity arelack of clearly defined job responsibilities,unclear work flow, no clear mission guidingemployee focus, redundant or out of controlprocesses, and lack of teamwork. Today'sglobal business leaders depend onsignificant productivity increases tomaximize the bottom line. Consequently,employees are asked to do more each daywith less, many times resulting ininefficiencies and loss of productivity.Fortunately, employee productivity

increases can be achievedby knowing moreabout how youre m p l o y e e sspend their timeperforming theprocesses thatthey own.

Operations of alltypes of companies frommanufacturers to service providersto distribution are comprised of a series ofbusiness processes. Using proven methods,obtaining employee ownership of thoseprocesses is simple - by working with theprocess owners, map out their processes andhave them ident i fy problems andopportunities for improvement. Bystreamlining and clarifying processes,eliminating waste, and applying commonsense process improvement tools, anorganization can vastly improve their bottomline.

One approach for team based processimprovement provides breakthrough results

by empowering employees tounders tand the i r ownprocesses and to take the

initiative to identify thoseopportunities that improve your

bottom line. They understandhow to not only identify theprojects that offer the most

substantial benefit/return, but alsohow those projects can be efficiently

and economically implemented.Implementation is most often the biggest

single challenge for the organization.

C l a r i f y i n g a n d s t r e a m l i n i n g a norganization's processes, making straightforward improvements, and allowing thesame resources do more, not only increasesproductivity but also translates intosignificantly improved morale. All of theseactivities result in a better bottom line.

capacity, the acquired assets boast 450 thousand tonnes of annualheat treatment capacity, about 750 thousand tonnes of threadingcapacity and up to 240 thousand joints of Premium connectioncapacity.

“We are very pleased with the acquisition of IPSCO Tubular’s USassets that became TMK’s largest acquisition to date. Theconsolidation of the new assets into TMK will considerably expandthe Company’s product mix with additional production andfinishing capacity of high-technology tubulars in the world’s largestoil and gas pipe market”, said TMK Chairman, DmitriyPumpyanskiy.

Founded in 2001, TMK is the largest pipe producer in Russia andone of the three global market leaders. In 2007, TMK shipped over 3million tonnes of pipes. TMK supplies to companies in more than 60countries.

Marmon/Keystone has announced operation expansions inPennsylvania, Ohio and California.

Bushwick-Koons Steel of Parker Ford, Pa., a division of BushwickMetals, Inc. has announced the leasing of a 120,000 sq. ft. facility inthe Pottstown Industrial Complex, Pottstown, Pa. A general linesteel service center, Bushwick-Koons specializes in wide flangebeams, pipe, tubing, and flat roll products. Value added servicesinclude saw cutting, shearing, flame cutting, cambering, andbending.

Stewart Lichtman, regional director, who will oversee the newfacility, said, “Expanding in Pottstown will facilitate our growth inthe region through increased and deeper inventory levels. With railservice already in place, we can maximize ourinbound shipments of bulk products.” Thecompany plans to add additional plateprocessing equipment to service theirgrowing industrial base.

Marmon/Keystone also announced the recentopening of a new depot to handle hot rolledseamless mechanical tubing. The material isavailable at the company’s present break-bulk facility in Bucyrus, Ohio. In addition tohousing large volumes of hot rolled seamlesstubing, the 150,000 sq. ft. building containsmultiple state-of-the-art Amada automatedCNC saws that can provide value addedservices for cut-to-length orders.

“The new HRS depot offers a tremendousrange of hot rolled mechanical seamlesstubing in one location,” said Ron Lenhart,national marketing manager, “This providesour twenty-six locations with greateraccessibility for large volume requirements,yielding faster delivery to our customers.”

The original break-bulk facility wasestablished in 2005 as a receiving source forincoming material from several mills. Theinventory is shipped to locations across thecountry and has resulted in more efficientservice and reduced lead times.

The third announced expansion is forAZCO Steel, a division of BushwickMetals, Inc., with plans for opening adistribution center in Pomona, California.This facility is expected to be operationalby October 1.

Novolipetsk Steel toAcquire John ManeelyCompanyMoscow, Russia and Washington, DC -Novolipetsk Steel, the leading Russiansteel producer, has signed a definitiveagreement to acquire U.S. steel pipe andtube manufacturer John Maneely Company(JMC) from a shareholder group includingglobal private equity firm The CarlyleGroup and the Zekelman family forUS$3.53 billion, acquiring the company ona debt free, cash free basis. The transactionis subject to customary regulatoryapprovals and is expected to close in thefourth quarter of 2008.

JMC is the largest independent tubularmanufacturer in North America, with themost diverse product platform in the NorthAmerican pipe and tube industry. Throughits Wheatland and Atlas Tube divisions, itmaintains a #1 market position in NorthAmerica in each of its three core productcategories: Hollow Structural Sections(HSS), standard pipe and electrical conduit.During Carlyle's ownership, salesincreased by $800 million, a 36% percentrise, from $2.2 billion in fiscal 2006 to anestimated $3 billion in fiscal 2008.

Formed through the combination of JohnManeely Company and Atlas Tube inDecember 2006 and headquartered inBeachwood, Ohio, JMC operates elevenplants in five U.S. states and one Canadianprovince.

The acquisition of JMC fits with NLMK'sstated strategy of portfolio diversificationand downstream integration in the coremarkets of the company. It strengthensNLMK's position in North America andprovides an entry point into an importantand high margin end market.

NLMK, through its joint venture withDuferco Group, has two manufacturingfacilities in the U.S., Duferco Farrell Corp.and Sharon Coating, LLC. Duferco Farrellis currently the key supplier of hot rolledcoils (HRC) to JMC and in particular thelargest supplier of HRC to JMC'sWheatland division, to which it is closelylocated.

They traded theirrobes and gavels for work clothes, glovesand "grabbers" and joined 100 volunteers,in a two-hour successful clean-up on andalong the banks of Buffalo Bayou inHouston.

Despite record price spikes, long termtrends in the oil and gas explorationindustry bear close scrutiny by steelmarketing professionals. A balancedm a r k e t i n g a p p r o a c h i n t o d a y ' ssupercharged environment is essential,having a sense of where the market has beenand its direction is paramount.

The modern drilling industry would beunrecognizable if not for steel and tubulargoods. Virtually everys t a g e o f e n e r g yexploration evolvesfrom metal componentsand tubing. Pipingplatforms operate indepths and reachesunimagined by drillingpioneers. Floating steeldrill ships ply waterwaysto slake global thirst forh y d r o c a r b o n s ,accompan ied by ad i z z y i n g a r r a y o fproducts composed ofmetal: liners, hangers,packers, casing, drillpipe, screens, tongs,f ishing tools, bi ts ,mandrels, couplings,umbilicals, tongs, etc.Pipelines traverse theocean bottom and earthsurface to bring oil andgas to market. Therelationship of alloyingsteels to oil is more thans y m b i o t i c , i t i saxiomatic that as goesdemand for crude, sogoes steel.

Pricing volatility hasc h a r a c t e r i z e dhydrocarbon extractionm a r k e t s s i n c e i t sinception. The crashes of1982 and 1986 are welldocumented, suffice tosay even conservativecompanies were savagedb y t h e d o w n t u r n .Compare the oil futuresb e n c h m a r k o f$145/barrel for July 3,2008, to the $10/barrel

cost of 1999. Predicting commodity energypricing is a fickle undertaking at best, howshould metal executives cope with priceswings endemic to the hydrocarbon extractionindustry? Perhaps the best plan is to emulate acardinal rule of stock market traders: it is nothow much you can make, rather, how much atransaction can lose.

Estimates by the IEA of world oil usage aretargeted for the 3rd quarter at 85.4 million b/d,down from 86.6 for the 4th quarter of 2007.Current supply stands at 85.64 million b/d,thus a positive balance of supply of .21million. However, except for the last eight

months, global demand for years has beenexceeding supply by nearly a million barrelsa day. Economists are predicting a modest3% annual global growth rate through 2013.To match this rate, it is estimated it will takean additional 28 million b/d of crude broughtto market. The global imbalance of supply todemand points to an ongoing drilling trend, ifnot a dramatic increase.

Whither, then, the benchmark price forcrude? And how to plan for stocking andmanufacturing levels in exploration-qualityalloy steels? As predictions are trickybusiness, let us assume an absolute tanking

of the commoditiesmarket. Today's pricehovering at between$110 - $120/barrel ishalved, resulting in anew benchmark issuefor crude at $55 - $60.This would impacts o m e d r i l l i n gassumptions to be sure,yet, consider that aslate as 2003, multi-b i l l ion deepwate rdrilling projects wereundertaken at $22 -$25/barrel. Taking intoaccount increasedproduction costs ashigh as 100 %, that stillleaves the $55.00marker a reasonableprofit yardstick andthe $55 represents theworst case scenario.

certainly a part of the crude oil pricingmatrix, witness the rise of Chinese andIndian economies and their combined useof 23 million b/d. It would be arrogant toassume third world countries acceptingless than their hard earned rise to top tierstatus. Untapped new discoveries in thenear east and Brazil are encouraging,however, geologists and industry veteranspoint to the decline of global mega-fields,such as Cantarell in Mexico. 70 % of worldhydrocarbons are controlled by stateentities, such as PDVSA (Venezuela) andNIOC (Iran) can the world even include thereserves of these countries as part of globalsupply? And who is willing to bet on theU.S. government sanctioning anaggressive domestic drilling program?

The preponderance of issues implies aforward direction to drilling activities forsome time. Combined with future negatives u p p l y r a t i o s , s t e e l m a r k e t i n gprofessionals can look to $50/barrel as abenchmark for a hard bottom on a possibledrilling bust.

Approximately 25 cubic yards of trash,enough to fill a typical commercialconstruction dumpster, was collected. Thisclean-up effort was part of the Clean &Green Port of Houston Program.

The effort enlisted judges, who workedunder a blistering summer morning sunalongside 19 non-violent drug offendersfrom the STAR program as they performedcommunity service work. They were joinedby volunteers from the Clean & Greenprogram partners: Shell Oil Company,Buffalo Bayou Partnership, Greater EastEnd Management District, the Ogg LawFirm and the Port of Houston Authority.The volunteers, working the top of theport's Turning Basin, collected litter andseparated plastics for recycling.

More than 1,500 cubic yards of trash hasbeen collected since the program startedlast September. That equates to more than60 garbage truckloads of trash; enough tofill a basketball court more than nine feethigh.

The Clean & Green program is an ongoingenvironmental initiative that utilizescommunity service workers from theHarris County Community Supervisionand CorrectionsDepartment five days a

week to collect litter on land and in thewater, via a skimmer boat.

Houston Port Authority CommissionerElyse Lanier said, "It's gratifying that theSTAR judges wanted to see up close andpersonal what Clean & Green is all about.Now, the judges have seen exactly whatgoes into the work they will be asking theirclients to do.”

The goal of Clean & Green is to restoreBuffalo Bayou to a cleaner, safer, pristinewaterway through removal of trash anddebris. Trash in the bayou ultimately floatsinto the Houston Ship Channel andGalveston Bay. The port authority and itspartners want consumers to realize that anytrash in the streets will go down stormdrains and end up in our bayous and finally,the Houston Ship Channel and GalvestonBay.

Paul Pedini graduated in 1977 from TuftsUniversity with a Bachelor of Science in CivilEngineering.

He has been employed with Jay Cashman since2005. He holds the position of Sr. VicePresident. He was Vice President of ModernContinental Construction from 1983 to 2005and Project Engineer for Slattery Associatesfrom 1977 -1983.

He has served in many capacities ranging fromChairman to Senior Vice President of BostonSociety of Civil Engineers from 1996 - 2002. Hehas been a member of Moles (National honorarysociety headquartered in New York City forpersons employed in underground construction)since 1999.

• Floating out concrete tunnel sections to createa roadway under Boston Harbor 19

• Using thousands of precast segments toconstruct I-93 through and around the Project

Dilip and Shalini Bhargava hosted an elegantwedding at the luxurious inNew Delhi, India in July for their daughter Girijaand her fiancé Anant Patel. The wedding wasattended by more than 400 friends and family.The NASPD was represented by ExecutiveDirector Susannah Porr and her husband Don,and from Atlas Tubular John & Rhonda Hubbardand Danny & Sherry Rizzo. The main festivitiesstarted on a Tuesday with a lunch at theBhargava's Jindal Farm House. Wednesday was aMehandi party where henna is applied to theguests' hands in decorative patterns, followed bya beautiful evening with aRajasthani theme. The Evening's highlight was atop Bollywood performer/singer from Mumbai.Thursday the ceremonies continued with formalengagement ceremonies and a festive receptionhighlighted by a dance routine involving thetalented Bhargava family! Girija's years ofclassical Indian dance lessons were obviouswhen she wowed her guests, and when Dilip andShalini joined her on stage the audience erupted!The only act worthy of following them wasanother top “Bollywood” entertainer flown infrom Mumbai for the event.All the guests dancedlate into the night.

Friday was a full day of traditional Hinduceremonies and Girija was a stunning bride in anoutfit that weighed morethan 35 lbs and was covered in crystals andjewels. The groom arrived in a horse drawncarriage after parading through the streets ofDelhi lead by a band, and dancing guests, andshowered by flower petals. The groom and hisfather were formally greeted by Dilip, his sonNarayan, and the Bhargava family as theyentered the wedding pavillion. The bride andgroom posed for pictures with all of their guestsand then navigated their way through hours oftraditional Hindu ceremonies with incrediblegrace and resilience.

Shalini oversaw every detail with the help of afull team of decorators and coordinators. Each ofthe parties were filled with vibrant colors, cozyseating arrangements, hookas, fragrant smells,beautiful floral arrangements, and elaboratedisplays of Indian food. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Northern Indian weddings are well known forbeing spectacular events, but Dilip and Shaliniimpressed even the most seasoned guests with an

attention to detail that was hard toimagine. The Bhargavas have raiseda beautiful young woman whoupholds the tradition and ideals of herproud culture.

A native of East Chicago,Indiana, Joseph Alvaradograduated from theUniversity of Notre

Dame (Ind.) in 1974 with a bachelor's degree ineconomics and earned a master's degree inbusiness administration from Cornell Universityin Ithaca, N.Y., in 1976.

Mr. Alvarado has spent his entire career insteelmaking, beginning with his first job aftercompleting his master's degree. He was hired byInland Steel Company in 1976 to serve in thefinance department. In 1979, he moved toInland's sales department, where he progressedthrough increasingly responsible managementpositions in sales and customer service. Mr.Alvarado was named manager-strategicplanning in 1985, was promoted to manager-plate production one year later, and namedmanager au tomot ive marke t ing andinternational development in 1987. In 1988, hewas appointed vice president and generalmanager-sales and marketing for Inland BarCompany and was promoted to president in1995.

Mr. Alvarado assumed the role of executive vicepresident-commercial at Birmingham SteelCompany in Birmingham, Ala., in 1997 andjoined Ispat North America Inc. in 1998 as vicepresident-long products sales and marketing. In2004, Mr. Alvarado accepted the positions ofpresident and chief operating officer at Dallas,Texas-based Lone Star Technologies, Inc. andheld them until U. S. Steel named him vicepresident-tubular in June 2007 after completingits acquisition of Lone Star Technologies, Inc.and its related companies.

Keith headed up the teamthat established SDI in1993. He earned anaccounting degree from

International Business College and a bachelor'sin business finance from the University of SaintFrancis.

Upon completion of a master's degree inbusiness administration at Indiana University in1978, Keith received the Wall Street Journalaward for academic excellence. He also receiveda Distinguished Alumnus Award from IndianaUniversity - Purdue University Fort Wayne in1991.

In 2005, the Association for Iron and SteelTechnology named Keith its Steelmaker of theYear. In 1997, BusinessWeek listed Keith andSDI among the top 10 entrepreneurs andentrepreneurial corporations in the UnitedStates.

In that same year, Keith was named winner of theIndiana Ernst & Young Emerging Entrepreneurof the Year award. In May 1999, he was namedone of the five "Best Undiscovered CEOs" in afeature article in Individual Investor magazine.He's also been listed in Outstanding Young MenofAmerica and the Who's Who World Registry.

Prior to founding SDI, Keith worked for NucorCorp. for 21 years, rising from divisioncontroller to general manager, and thenultimately becoming vice president and generalmanager of the Nucor ' s fac i l i ty a tCrawfordsville, Indiana. At Crawfordsville,Keith led a team that built and operated theworld's first minimill to use thin-slabcastingsteelmaking technology.

Keith and colleagues Mark Millett and DickTeets set out on their own in 1993 to form SteelDynamics, the first new U.S. steel producer in acentury to be formed without corporate backingor pre-existing financial credentials. Based ontheir reputation and a strong business plan, theysucceeded in raising $370 million in capital tobuild SDI's flat-roll minimill at Butler, Indiana.

Constructed in a record 14 months, theGreenfield mill began production of hot-rolledsteel early in 1996 and became profitable in itssixth month of operation.

Under Keith's leadership, Steel Dynamics hasquickly grown to more than $3 billion inrevenues and is one of the most profitable steelcompanies in the world.
