Attention Juniors: $5,000 for Top Jr. in Fort Worth National Show
Funds have been committed to award $5,000 to the top placing ju-nior heifer and $2,500 to second place junior heifer (if funds permit) that is exhibited at the National Her-eford Show in Fort Worth. A second scholarship will be awarded if $5,000 is exceeded. Exhibitor must be at the halter of his/her own heifer as well as be eligible to show in the junior show the previous week. To be eli-gible for the junior show, the owner-ship must be in only the exhibitors’ name, no siblings or partners. See rule 12 on page 187 of the Fort Worth Stock Show premium book. The heif-er must be eligible to show for Grand Champion (no Cow/Calf). This is an incentive to encourage junior exhibi-tors to exhibit at the open show on February 3, 2014. To be eligible for the award, the exhibitor must enter the open show by the November 15th deadline. The exhibitor must be a member of the Texas Junior Hereford Association.
The sponsors of this award are committed to making this an annual event and hope to grow the fund to increase the prize as well as create a special belt buckle for the event. Anyone wishing to join this effort should contact Jack Chastain at the THA office. ★

OopsIn our A.I. directory in the De-
cember issue, a listing for semen sales on NJW 98S R117 Ribeye 88X ET was made. The owners of the bull closed semen sales in March of 2013. The only non-owner semen available on the bull is through special fund rais-ing auctions like the one THA spon-sors at the annual Whiteface Replace-ment Sale in Fort Worth. The owners have generously donated 6 straws and 2 certificates for the 2014 sale. ★

tailgateTALKBy Jack Chastain, Editor
As we close out another year, the optimist in me is thankful 2013 is over and most
hopeful that 2014 will bring more positive conditions for the livestock industry. We can be thankful for the positive things that happened and plan to change the not so positive ones. Our Hereford cattle continue to gain acceptability as more and more cattlemen realize what our breed has to offer. The Hereford cow is our rock of strength. We must build from this. Our bulls continue to make an impact with the
number of calves they can sire as well as the pounds and quality they breed. As we strive to use sires with more muscle, REA and IMF epd’s; we will continue to increase market share of the bull trade. We must get more aggressive and effective in promoting our breed and our product. We must do a better job of developing and selling our cattle.
This issue is full of activities and opportunities for Hereford breeders and enthusiasts. Your staff and executive
committee have planned a few new activities for the upcoming year. We will be back at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden for our annual meeting. Our forty-fifth annual replacement female sale and Cowtown Select sale have excellent offerings. We need your presence and participation for these events to be successful. We have exciting plans to expand our October sale in Buffalo. We added Red Angus bulls this year and hope to grow our female consignments. Our executive committee solicits your input on activities that would make you more proud to be a member of this organization. If you want to contribute time and ideas, contact myself, President Jay Wright, any member of the executive committee or this years nominating committee. Your help, ideas and contributions are most appreciated. We have a small group of members carrying membership. We need more participation from more members. Specifically we need your attendance at Hereford events. Success is generally measured by size of the crowd. Next we need more participation in advertising in our publication. More ads allow us more editorial and both will enhance Herefords and THA. We have been able to run color ads every month in 2013 for the same rate as our old black only ads. We put our magazine on our website when we send it to the printer. Our goal is to provide you as members an affordable means to promote your cattle. We have been posting announcements and results on Facebook and have tried to start an account on Twitter.
I extend a plea to all members who do not have a card ad in the magazine. We need your help in keeping enough ads to pay production costs which continue to creep upward. Every director should have a card ad. We also need more members to balance our operating budget. If each current member adds a customer, friend or neighbor as a member, our membership will double. We have experienced a shortfall of revenue over expenses the past few years and are reaching a point of concern. Any help will be most appreciated.
As 2014 progresses, I hope to see more of our members at Hereford events. I hope you encourage a friend or neighbor to come along and become active in our association. January is a busy month, but there is something to do every month. Watch our magazine, our web site and our Facebook page for more exciting events in the planning stages for this year. Together we can make Herefords reign Supreme not only in Texas but across the USA. ★

Spring Sale. We feed the bulls during the winter, freeing your pasture, time, and money.
Central Location. With the geographical center of Texas only 13 miles away, we’re close to everyone.
Guarantee. We absolutely guarantee our cattle. If you are not completely satisfied, we will make it right!
Strategic Planning. We aren’t afraid to spend big bucks when we spot an industry changer. Our bold move several years ago to purchase IMR Patriot 3113 3ET has allowed us to move our cowherd to the forefront of the industry. His daughters are truly impressive with beautiful udders, feminine profiles, and the ability to wean heavy calves under severe drought conditions. 3113’s EPD numbers continue to climb when other bulls’ numbers often decline as daughters enter production. We’ve shared a few of his females in previous sales and they are always crowd favorites.

What you see is what you get. This outcross son is powerfully built from the ground up and packed full of muscle and long as a freight train. He will add pounds to those range bulls he sires.
This polled Outcross daughter will have a lot of friends on sale day. She is fancy. Her maternal sister was Res Division at Fort Worth in the open show last year for Ashley Cline. She will be fun to show but the donor pen
is where she will make her mark.
Here is an 8203 son that will catch your eye. Soggy made and big boned are a couple terms to describe this herd bull prospect. His dam is a 026K daughter and has been a great producer. Straight Line One genetics here.

thaAUXILIARY
The annual meeting of the Texas Hereford Auxiliary will
be held in conjunction with the Fort Worth Stock Show and the National Hereford show again this year. We look forward to seeing all of our members and supporting the Hereford women of Texas. We welcome any guests and potential members to attend our meeting!
This year, our dues will be $40 in total. This includes $20.00 to cover your Texas membership and an additional $20.00 for your dues to the National Hereford Women. Your Texas membership dues are used for many different junior activities supported by the Texas Hereford
Auxiliary.• We support the state queen and
sweetheart throughout their reign. They travel to most of the Hereford shows in the state and many national shows as well. The state queens attend the Junior National Hereford Expo and the Kansas City Royal in order to compete for the National Hereford Queen title. The stipend we provide helps them cover some modest expenses.
• Additionally, the Texas Hereford Auxiliary gives a scholarship to deserving junior in Texas every year at the state show. Your dues to the National Hereford Women are used to fund numerous
scholarships and contests for eligible Hereford youth.
If your schedule will allow, we hope you will join us for another fun meeting in Fort Worth!
The Texas Hereford Auxiliary officers and directors will also be updating the auxiliary by-laws.
Dues can be mailed to the Texas Hereford Association or to Shannon Mehaffey at 5701 CR 401 Grandview, TX 76050. You can also bring a check with you to the meeting on February 1. If you have any questions please feel free to call Shannon at 817-271-4050. We hope you and your families have a wonderful and joyous holiday season! ★

Former AHA Exec PassesHenry Hopkins “Hop” Dickenson
passed away peacefully at his home, with his family by his side on Dec. 24, 2013. His death followed an 18-month battle with cancer.
He was a graduate of Virginia Tech. He served two years in the Army in Germany.
Hop Dickenson spent a lifetime dedicated to serving the Hereford breed. He worked for the American Hereford Association (AHA) in vari-ous roles for 38 years, 24 as chief ex-ecutive officer. During his career, he traveled to 36 countries.
Dickenson began working for the Association in the 1950s, first as field-man and then as secretary for state Hereford associations in the South-east. He spent two years overseas in military service, and when he re-
turned, he worked as an Extension beef cattle specialist for Virginia Poly-technic Institute.
In 1960 he returned to Association work as field representative for the American Hereford Journal. He next served as an Association fieldman for the same territory and then switched to the Kansas, Oklahoma and Mis-souri territory.
In 1968 he moved to the Associa-tion headquarters as general manager of the American Hereford Journal. Next, he assumed responsibilities as the Association’s director of market-ing. Then, in July of 1974, he was ap-pointed the chief executive officer, a position he would continue to be in for 24 years.
Considered the father of Certified Hereford Beef (CHB®), Dickenson is regarded as a breed association trail-blazer. He was also responsible for introducing the total performance re-cording (TPR) and expected progeny difference (EPD) systems and was a driving force in bringing the two pop-ulations of Hereford people and the cattle they raise together for the good
of the industry. He was inducted into the Hereford Hall of Merit in 2012.
He served on the National Live-stock Meat Board, American Royal Board of Directors, past president of the U.S. Beef Breeds Council and past president of the National Society of Livestock Records. He was a member of Village Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Polly. Also, his son, Hank, daughter-in-law, Missy, and grandsons, Dan and Joe, of Denton, Texas; his sister, Kathryn Johnson, brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Virginia Dickenson, all of Lebanon, Va.; brother-in-law, Fin McClure and his wife Sibley, broth-er-in-law, J.A. “Mac” McClure, all of Staunton, Va.; six dearly loved nieces and nephews and 11 great nieces and nephews. ★

thaAUXILIARY

Robert E. McKnight, Jr. father’s mother’s family (Amy White) a widow with 13 children was one of the 300 families that came to Texas with Stephen F. Austin. The McKnight’s came to Texas after the Civil War.
Robert is a sixth generation rancher, operating the family business in Jeff Davis, Brewster, Reeves, Presidio, Crane and Ector counties. The Mc-Knight Ranch Company is headquartered in Fort Davis, Texas. Hereford cattle have been a very important part of the McKnight ranching operation since the 1900’s. The McKnight Ranch also breeds quarter horses.
Robert earned his bachelors degree from Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, Texas in 1982. He is a member of the Texas Hereford Asso-ciation, the Texas and Southwestern Cattleraiser’s Association where he serves on the executive committee; National Cattleman’s Beef Association, and the American Quarter Horse Association.
He has served as director of the El Paso Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas from 2009 until present. Other affiliations include: 1984 to 1992 the Permian Basin Sandhills Rodeo Association; Texas Nature Con-servancy, 2000-2009; Soil and Water Conservation Board, 1982-1992; and Advisory Board of the Texas Ag Land Trust.
Mr. McKnight’s community activities include the Jeff Davis Higher Edu-cation Scholarship Fund; Big Bend Museum of Alpine, Texas; Presidio City Museum and Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church.
Today they keep a registered herd of Herefords for seed stock for their commercial program. They stress performance in their cattle as well as car-cass traits, trying to produce the best product for their customers.
With the good science available to us today this industry is moving so fast, Mr. McKnight feels very blessed to be part of an industry that he enjoys so much. He loves what he does and looks forward to each day.

Booster of the Year
Linda and Mike Cornett
Mike and Linda Cornett own and operate Tenroc Ranch outside of
downtown “historic Salado”, Texas, 15 miles south of Temple.
Mike and Linda run a 50 head cow calf operation of registered An-gus cows. They have over 1,000 acres under high fence for the hunting of whitetail deer, exotic deer, antelope, turkeys, and feral hogs. Our hunting lodge stays quite busy during hunting season with hunters and their guide.
The Cornett’s have developed the number one destination wedding business in central Texas. They have three separate locations for wedding sites. One venue, “The Blue Heron” has a majestic amphitheatre of stone with spring water flowing between the audience and the bridal parties. The second venue “The Sirena” has a ceremony site on the spring water too, with water falls on each side of the ceremony site. The grand old Oak trees that have graced the ranch for hundreds of years will guarantee to take your breath away. The third
event center, “The Chisholm Trail” is in the middle of the ranch where our first class cattle operation takes place. This is the perfect place for couples who want the chabby chic wedding.
Besides weddings, Tenroc Ranch has become the favorite place for birthday and anniversary parties. The Cornett’s host “Paint the Ranch Red” for the American Heart Associa-tion. This gala raises money for heart research. Tenroc also hosts many events honoring our troops from Fort Hood and their families.
When Mike purchased the land in 1992, it was open land without buildings, only a cattle trail with a lot of cactus and cedars…so the work began for Mike to make his dreams come true. Seven years later, in 1999, Mike received the American Angus Association Land Stewardship Award.
The Cornett’s had taken the raw, rough, rocky land and turned it into the beautiful, highly productive ranch it is today.
In 1951 Larry’s father started his herd with two horned heifers he bought
near Abilene, TX. Larry’s father Dalton P. Johnson continued the registered herd under the name DJ Hereford Farms, with Larry and brothers Dwain and Todd. They gathered genetics from breeders like Holden Herefords, K&B Herefords, and Weldon Edwards. In the 1980’s-1990’s they maintained between 175 and 200 head of registered females. In the mid-1990’s they were affected by

Larry and Patricia Johnson Colt Johnson
the drought like so many other farms and ranchers. They were forced to reduce the numbers of their herd and sold down to a hand full of their best cows. That was one of the hardest decisions Larry’s family ever had to make. In 2008 Larry with his wife Patricia and son Colt established their
own operation under the name Rafter J Cattle Co. using both horned and polled genetics. Their main goal was to produce cattle that would not only be competitive in the show ring but would also provide elite genetics for the seed stock producers and the commercial cattleman. The Johnson’s now have 100 head of Hereford cows and 100 head of commercial cows. They continue to increase and improve their genetics and production through artifi cial insemination and embryo transfer. They have recently started a partnership with H2 Ranch and Cattle Company of Madisonville, Texas. Josh Taylor will be helping in management of the Rafter J cattle. Rafter J Cattle Co. is excited for the future of this partnership and is happy to welcome Josh and his family to be a part of it. The Hereford breed is one of the most infl uential and productive breeds in the cattle industry. The quality of Herefords today is as good as it has ever been. This quality is an attribute to all the Hereford breeders. The only thing better than Hereford cattle is the Hereford breeder and we are proud to say we raise Hereford cattle. Besides son Colt, Larry and Patricia have a daughter Jessica Jordan and a son Ethan Johnson.

Herefords have always been a part of Ann Guess’s life.
She was raised on her family’s Hereford ranch in Coleman. As a 4-H member, she began showing steers and this led to membership in the Texas Junior Hereford Association. She was an active TJHA member, holding several leadership positions, and served as the 1969-70 Texas Hereford Queen. As an adult, she and husband Jim were active supporters of the juniors, serving as advisors when their children, Reid and Haley, were active and serving on the board. Ann continued helping the juniors after her children were gone by serving as the adult treasurer for the TJHA. Ann has also been active in the Texas Hereford Auxiliary, has held leadership positions in both Texas and on the American Hereford Women board. She was a founding board member of the National Hereford Women, serving as secretary during her term of offi ce. After a career in education, Ann retired this past spring. She and Jim have returned to the ranch in Coleman where they continue the family tradition of supporting Herefords with their grandsons, Brayden and Elliot.
Ann Guess
Lilith Martin was born and raised
in Pampa, Texas. She has always liked live-stock. As a child she visited her grand-father’s farm and lived on a farm as a
teenager. She is a graduate of Pampa High School, and attended Texas State College for Women. Lilith worked for Celanese Chemi-cal Company in Pampa until she married E.H. “Ed” Brainard, II on November 29, 1958. Ed’s family is a longtime commer-cial Hereford ranching family in the Texas Panhandle. On their first date which was feeding cattle Ed introduced Lilith to the ranching way of life. At the time of her mar-riage, she began a life of a rancher’s wife and a supporter of Hereford cattle and the livestock and beef industries. Ed and Lilith raised their five children on the Brainard’s Johns Creek ranch in Roberts County. Their children are Sally Wicker and husband Ken-ny, Berklee Clements and husband Steve, Amy Brainard, Swasey Brainard, and Sena Brainard. Lilith is called Grandi by her nine grandchildren, grandson in law, and two great granddaughters. Ed passed away in 1999.
Lilith continues to hold together the 130 year old ranching operation established by her late husband’s family. She can often be found in the stands at local, county, state, and national livestock shows watching her grandchildren show their livestock projects. The grandchildren often show Hereford steers and heifers and have placed and won at all levels of competition. She supports local, county, and state livestock shows as well as scholarships. Lilith is a strong sup-porter of youth organizations such as 4-H, FFA, and Texas Junior Hereford Association. She was instrumental in seeing that the TJHA/TJPHA State Show attendees were able to go see the musical drama “Texas” in Palo Duro Canyon when the state show was held in Amarillo, Texas in 2010. Lil-ith supports the awards at the state show each year. Every year that the THA has had a Heritage pen at the Ft. Worth Stock Show the family ranching business has donated two Hereford heifers. They also enter a pen of 10 Hereford heifers in the commer-cial show. In 1998 the ranch was honored as “Ag Family of the Year” by Top O’ Texas Cattlewomen. In 2003, the family ranch was National Hereford Show honoree at the Ft. Worth Livestock Show.
Lilith is a member of the Texas Hereford Auxiliary, American Hereford Women, Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, National Cattleman’s Beef Association, Top O’ Texas Cattlewomen, Texas Cattlewomen, and American National Cattlewomen.
Lilith is a strong supporter of the arts. She has served on the board of the Friends of the Southwest Arts. She currently serves on the board for the Texas Panhandle Heri-tage Foundation - producers of the Musical-Drama “Texas”. In her capacity as board member she is the events chairman and serves on the Rider on the Rim trail ride committee. Lilith enjoys attending and sup-porting the Amarillo Symphony and Lone Star Ballet productions. Lilith has received the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce Arts committees prestigious Golden Nail Award on three occasions - once as a volunteer and twice as an individual. In 2013 she received the Texas Cattlewomen Lifetime Achieve-ment Award and was inducted in to the Old Main Society at West Texas A&M University.
Lilith is very active in her hometown of Pampa. She serves on the board and is treasurer of the Pampa Fine Arts Associa-tion, Woody Guthrie Cultural Center board, Pampa Community Concert Association board, member of the Greater Area Pampa Chamber of Commerce tourism committee. She is a board member of the Tri-County Heart Association, and serves on the Citadel Art Foundation Honorary Board in Canadi-an. Lilith is a member of the 20th Century Cotillion Club in Pampa. She is a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Canadian, Texas.
Lilith is a person who exemplifies a life-time commitment to the boards and orga-nizations that she is involved in. She has devoted her time, energy, and talents to the livestock and Hereford industries as well as the arts. Many times her energetic involve-ment encourages others to step out and get involved. She is a lady who does whatever needs to be done to get a project or event launched, completed, and successful. She is a person people of all ages and all walks of life look up to. She inspires younger gen-erations to be passionate and dedicated to the activities they are involved in. Lilith has touched many lives through her enthusi-asm, dedication, involvement, generosity, and volunteerism in all the organizations and activities that she is involved in. Lilith Brainard is a blessing and an asset to the Hereford industry. She truly lives the motto “Herefords all things considered”.
