A.B. GRAHAM In 1902, Albert Belmont Graham (1868-1960), a

school teacher and superintendent, established the Boys and Girls

Agricultural Experiment Club in Springfield, Ohio. Graham

believed in Learning by Doing, a concept at the core of 4-H, which

NATIONWIDE & OHIO FARM BUREAU 4-H CENTER Dedicated in 2008, the Nationwide & Ohio

Farm Bureau 4-H Center is the first campus building for 4-H in the United States and the first “green” building

and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certified facility on The Ohio State University campus.

At the time of construction, the building represented state-of-the-art “green” design, from the use of energy-

conserving and recycled materials to extensive use of natural light. In addition to the lead contributions by

Nationwide Insurance Foundation, and Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, the 4-H Center was built with gifts from

over 3,800 donors.

This facility serves as the home of Ohio 4-H, the headquarters for cutting-edge research in youth development,

teaching resources and service opportunities. The building serves young people, providing global experiences

which will prepare them to be well-rounded citizens and leaders, and enable premier youth development

programming on The Ohio State University campus. The Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center also

provides volunteers with the resources and experiences to achieve the best practices for youth development.

The facility reaches beyond 4-H organizational boundaries and strives to engage all volunteers and

professionals who are impacting youth.

McPheron, The 4-H Foundation

Stewardship Committee hosted new

board members Dr. Denise Shockley,

Doug Tenney, Christine Steele and Kim

Catchpole for an exciting afternoon of

Ohio State basketball.

Greeting Friends of 4-H,

Summer is sure a great time to be a 4-H member. Project work, camps,

fair, award trips, and receiving that special blue ribbon keeps 4-H

members and their families busy learning important skills and well, just

having fun while doing it.

I hope you get the chance to see a 4-H member in action this summer. I

did as I traveled to the Ohio Leadership Camp with our sponsors

Nationwide and Farm Credit. We got to see teens engaged in activities ranging from

shooting sports, archery, high ropes, challenge course, and of course singing grace

before lunch served family style.

I was really impressed with the energy of the 71 4-H’ers from 41 different Ohio

counties as they actively engaged in leadership activities. It is because of sponsors like

Nationwide and Farm Credit along with the dedication of many local county supporters

that these teens got to practice the traits needed to become a leader. Yes, in my opinion

4-H is certainly the most fun summer school.

This fall the Ohio 4-H Foundation Board will be bringing you an exciting event- the

2013 Celebration of Youth. This year’s event will feature the remarkable foods, wines

and chefs of Ohio. What a great opportunity to support your community and the Ohio

4-H Youth Development Program!

In closing, please join us for the Celebration of Youth. It will be a special evening and

we will raise important dollars to help sustain 4-H programming for the youth of Ohio.

See you at the fair,

Foundation Supports International Travels

Dear Ohio 4-H Foundation Board Members,

My name is Aimee Bockelman. I have been in 4-H

for 10 years and have been very active through both

my county’s program and state. Through my years in

4-H I have taken a lot of projects but I focused

mainly on Beef and Horticulture and have been

blessed to receive many awards with them. I am the

5th child out of 8 kids; I’m currently finishing my

last year in high school and will be continuing my

education through a four-year animal science program at Dordt

Christian College in Sioux Center, Iowa.

I would like to take this time and thank you for providing a scholarship

for my trip to Argentina through the States’ 4-H International Exchange

Program. Without it, it would have been very hard for me to meet all my

payments. Your generosity not only for me, but the other delegates in

this program is extremely appreciated.

This opportunity will allow me to spend four weeks learning the

government, economy and culture of Argentina. A highlight for me will

be exchanging our 4-H programs and activities. I am so proud to be one

of the nine national 4-H’ers who have been chosen to represent the

United States abroad.

Thank you again for all you have done to help me with my trip!

Sincerely,

Aimee M. Bockelman

Aimee Bockelman

Dear Ohio 4-H Foundation Board Members,

My name is Hannah Braswell. I am 13 years old. I

enjoy riding horses and caring for them and other

animals. I play the violin and the flute. I love

running cross country and track. I enjoy hanging out

with friends, meeting people and exploring different

cultures. I also enjoy archery, shopping, acting and

going on hikes in my woods outside.

I am very thankful you have chosen to donate to the

4-H Exchange Program. I have worked hard to earn the money needed

to pay for the cost of traveling to Japan. With the scholarship you have

donated, It has made this trip possible.

I will travel to Japan and stay there for 4 weeks. I am very excited to go

to Japan. I hope I will learn to better understand friends from a different

culture. Through my experiences there, I think I will be able to become

more patient and learn how to communicate with people from different

backgrounds. I also hope to learn to speak better Japanese. While I am

there, I will be able to share a little bit more about my culture with my

host family and friends as well.

Thank you so much for helping to make this trip a possibility.

Sincerely,

Hannah Braswell

Hannah Braswell

Dear Ohio 4-H Foundation Board Members,

My name is Alex Robinson and I am 12 years

old. I live in Xenia, Ohio and am a 6th grader

at Central Middle School. I live with my mom

and stepdad, and have two little stepsisters. I

have been to China, Honduras and Canada, as

well as several places in the US.

I will be visiting Kawaguti-shi, Saitama, Japan.

I will be there for three and a half weeks. I will

be staying with my friend, Kanta, who I hosted

last summer. I am very happy that Kanta’s

family was willing to host me. It makes me

feel more comfortable that I will be staying

with someone I know.

While I am in Japan I hope to visit the big

cities. I live in a small city, but I like big cities.

When I grow up, I will live in a big city. I am

anxious to learn about Japanese culture. I know

they do many things differently than us, and I

am excited to learn that. I also hope to learn

some of the Japanese language while I am

there. I am studying it now and have already

learned a little bit. I am glad Kanta can speak a

little bit of English.

I am glad that I have been given this

opportunity. I think it will help me understand

how other cultures work. This will help me in

school and many other ways.

Again, I want to thank

you for helping me reach

my goal. It is very much

appreciated and I will take

full advantage of this trip.

Thank you,

Alex Robinson

2013 Grant Program Update!

Ohio 4-H’ers - On the Road to History and Government

4-H members from across Ohio joined

together on January 19, 2013 to travel to

Washington D.C. to experience an exciting

time in our nation’s history. During this four

-day trip, 4-H’ers had the opportunity to

tour national monuments and museums;

participate in educational programs focused

on government and history; and attend the

57th Presidential Inauguration on January

21, 2013. Participants on the trip stayed at

the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase,

Maryland. Carolyn Belczyk, Extension

Educator, 4-H Youth Development in Adams County and one of the trip planners shared, “The Inauguration is a perfect time to

spark a youth’s interest in government and history. What better way to learn about government and history, but to take a road trip

and live it?”

Two buses took the 4-H members to Washington D.C. One left from the Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center in Columbus

and the other left from Cleveland, Ohio. A total of 97 people from 18 counties represented Ohio 4-H on the trip. Generous sponsors

helped reduce the cost of the trip. The Cleveland Metropolitan School District and PNC Bank supplied the funds necessary to pay

for the bus from Cuyahoga County. Funding from the Sam Cashman Family 4-H Endowment and the Richard B. & Nancy E. Stahl

Family 4-H Endowment through the Ohio 4-H Foundation helped defray trip expenses for the entire delegation.

While in Washington D.C., 4-H’ers had the opportunity to get to know others in the Ohio group through activities planned by trip

organizers. A day of sight-seeing and a twilight tour of monuments was the highlight of Sunday. On Monday, members had the

chance to watch the swearing-in ceremony. A special Inauguration Ball just for the Ohio 4-H members was held Monday evening at

the National 4-H Center.

This experience was planned by a team of Ohio 4-H Professionals including Robin Stone, Program Coordinator, 4-H Youth

Advisory Committee of Cuyahoga County; Carolyn Belczyk, Adams County 4-H Extension Educator and Nadine Fogt, Fayette

County 4-H Extension Educator. Christy Clary, a Purdue Grad Student and former Citizenship Washington Focus Program Assistant

also assisted in planning the trip. Support was also provided by Doug Swanson, National 4-H Program Leader, and Maria McNeely,

National 4-H Youth Program Opportunities manager. Extension 4-H professionals that traveled with the group included Annie

Davis, Dr. Theresa Ferrari, Mark Light, Christy Millhouse and Jo Williams.

The Ohio 4-H Foundation Grants Program provides 4-H professionals with much needed support in building

the capacity for positive youth development programming, and to train and recognize volunteers that are so essential to

delivering these programs. In most cases, the Foundation is a partner, rather than the sole source of funds. Investments

are made where the strategic use of resources are most in evidence and where the largest number of 4-H youth can be

reached with the most meaningful and sustainable impact.

MXC - Making eXtreme Counselors

The 2013 MXC was held at the

Nationwide Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H

Center on February 23rd and 24th.

The event, in its fifth year, had a total

of 172 participants, 153 of those were

high school youth who serve as a 4-H

Camp Counselor. Teens came from

across the state to attend the

counseling training conducted by a

team of Ohio 4-H professionals.

About half of them had attended the

event in the past. This is an optional

educational experience for counselors to attend that is meant to

supplement their county required training. Thanks to a grant funded by

the Ohio 4-H Endowment, MXC participants have the opportunity to

gain skills that will enable them to assist in their county's camp

program planning and delivery, and prepare them to deliver a great

camp program to their campers.

AC Conservation Camp

On Tuesday June 11th, Adventure Central staff and JET teens embarked on

a one night, two day camping trip known as “AC Conservation Camp.”

This service-learning and staff development opportunity proved to be a

memorable experience that pushed comfort zones and provided many first-

time experiences (first times camping, making s‘mores, kayaking, and

more). Participants learned new outdoor skills, improved their knowledge

of conservation, deepened their connection with nature… and had fun! Now

the real work begins as we continue our conservation focus through

education and service projects with the rest of the 4-H youth at Adventure

Central.

Adventure Central appreciates the support of everyone who made this

experience possible: The Ohio 4-H Foundation for their generous grant

support, Five Rivers MetroParks for providing camping gear and a service

project venue, and the University of Dayton Rivers Institute for providing a

fun afternoon of paddling and education.

CITIZENSHIP WASHINGTON FOCUS

4H Members Across Ohio Boost Leadership Skills and Civic

Engagement at 4-H’s Citizen Washington Focus (CWF).

4-H’ers learned about government processes in the vibrant, living

classroom of the nation’s capital as part of CWF, an intensive 4-H

civic engagement program for high-school youth held at the National

4-H Youth Conference Center in Chevy Chase, MD.

For more than 50 years, National 4-H Youth Conference Center has

invited 4-H members from across the country to travel to

Washington, DC and participate in civic workshops, committees, and field trips before returning home to

make positive changes in their own communities. CWF not only strengthens young people’s understanding

of the government’s civic process, but it also boosts their leadership skills, communication skills, and overall

confidence.

During CWF, youth get a behind-the-scenes look at the nation’s capital while meeting with Members of

Congress to learn more about how their government works. At the end of the program, youth draft step-by-

step action plans to address important issues in their communities.

“CWF is a great opportunity for young people to come together, talk about the problems they see in their

communities, and identify solutions to make their communities stronger,” said Donald T. Floyd, Jr., National

4-H Council President and CEO. “The experiences these young people gain during CWF gives them the

proper tools and confidence to become successful, articulate leaders in the future.”

This June, campers enjoyed a week-long

adventure exploring the outer reaches of

space at 4-H AstroCamp!

Held at the Nationwide & Ohio Farm

Bureau 4-H Center, 4th, 5th and 6th graders investigated the solar system, space travel, stars and

more with hands-on activities and experiments.

Youth constructed hot air balloons, launched bottle rockets, created constellation viewers, and

even stirred up their own comets! With assistance from OSU astronomers and NASA experts,

campers explored the principles of flight, considered the number of stars in the Milky Way and

had the opportunity for solar and lunar observing.

The COY Cyber Silent Auction is the first activity to be launched followed by Celebration of Youth’s main event on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at the Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center.
