• In the Summer of 2010, the three Ohio AFSCME Affiliates (Ohio Council 8, OAPSE and OCSEA Local 13) held a joint Ohio Next Wave Conference
OAPSE/AFSCME Local 4
• Friday night, we socialized…..
OAPSE/AFSCME Local 4
• Saturday morning, we got down to business learning about our proud Union history
OAPSE/AFSCME Local 4
• Saturday afternoon, we discussed what issues are important to the Next Wave
OAPSE/AFSCME Local 4
• Then in the spring of 2011, Senate Bill 5, was passed by the Ohio Legislature, severely limiting public employees right to bargain
OAPSE/AFSCME Local 4
• It was signed into law by the “Chief Clown”
OAPSE/AFSCME Local 4
•Despite Massive Opposition
OAPSE/AFSCME Local 4
• So, the OAPSE Next Wavers, along with our Union Brothers and Sisters hit the streets
OAPSE/AFSCME Local 4
• We began collecting signatures to repeal the law
OAPSE/AFSCME Local 4
• And we collected more signatures….
OAPSE/AFSCME Local 4
• And more signatures…
OAPSE/AFSCME Local 4
• And more signatures…
OAPSE/AFSCME Local 4
• Until we had collected over 100,000 signatures!
OAPSE/AFSCME Local 4
• Nearly every OAPSE Next Wave activist that attended the Joint Next Wave Conference, circulated a petition
OAPSE/AFSCME Local 4
• Then we marched with our Union Brothers and Sisters …..
OAPSE/AFSCME Local 4
• And we delivered 1.3 million signatures to the Ohio Secretary of State
OAPSE/AFSCME Local 4
• OAPSE is growing the Next Generation of Union Leaders and Activists
OAPSE/AFSCME Local 4
• Because although over time the faces may change
OAPSE/AFSCME Local 4
• No matter what comes our way….
