POSITION SUMMARY

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center seeks a chair to lead and expand the excel-lence of the educational, scientific and clinical programs in the Department of Internal Medicine. The chair has overall responsibility for operations and strategy in internal medicine across the entities. The chair oversees the development of centers of excellence and outstanding clinical programs and inspires groundbreaking translational and basic research.

This vital position requires a dynamic, passionate and experienced physician/scientist leader with a proven track record. The successful candidate will have demonstrated capability across the spectrum of individual scholarship, collaborative academic leadership, clinical and research pro-gram development, educational excellence, successful faculty recruitment and retention, commu-nity engagement and will have designed, implemented and integrated effective programs across complex organizations.

In leading the Department of Internal Medicine, the chair must have a vision aligned with the stra-tegic plan of the College of Medicine, the Wexner Medical Center and its other two components, the OSU Health System and the OSU Physicians central faculty practice plan. The chair leads through innovation, effective management of department resources and leverage of medical center and College of Medicine assets. The chair also works collaboratively with leaders of the College of Medicine and medical center, involving fellow chairs, administrators, faculty and staff. The chair demonstrates a personal communication style and integrity that fosters an environment of trust, teamwork, and accountability, as well as personal behavior that fosters innovation and excellence for all constituents within the Department of Internal Medicine, College of Medicine, medical center and university.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• In collaboration with the leadership of The Ohio State University, provide visionary and innovative leadership to lead the department into the next phase of growth and development.

• Define and lead the department’s research strategy together with the dean. Support principal investigators and other faculty within the department in efforts to secure NIH and other grant funding to support research priorities. Ensure a deliberate investment into research activities and priorities within the Department.

• Provide the vision and leadership to achieve superior clinical programs within medicine and related disciplines. Work closely and collaboratively with the leadership at Ohio State and its network affiliates, to build, grow and integrate areas of acknowledged clinical excellence with outstanding outcomes and patient satisfaction, while at the same time striving to deliver value.

• Assure delivery of excellent clinical education and advanced training to the medical students, residents and fellows. Provide leadership and oversight to the residency and fellowship programs within the department.

• Supervise, prepare, implement and monitor the department budget that encompasses all funding sources and ensures compliance with grant, legislative and institutional guidelines.

• Recruit, hire and retain outstanding 60 net-new faculty within the subspecialties of medicine. Ensure an atmosphere of support and development. Promote scholarly activities on the part of faculty, trainees and students. Mentor faculty with personalized professional development plans.

• Encourage ethical medical and financial practice across the department. Support compliance activities as necessary.

• Continually communicate and drive high priority strategic initiatives to keep leadership focused. Communicate effectively and regularly to College of Medicine and Wexner Medical Center leadership and to department faculty and staff regarding the overall health and performance of the department.

• Establish work relationships and utilize these relationships to empower people so the organization can progress. Coach, mentor and develop others to build internal capabilities and the talent that facilitates succession.

• Foster open communication and teamwork, and champion change. Effectively manage conflict and look for opportunities for collaborative solutions.

IDEAL EXPERIENCE

National reputation for personal academic accomplishments

A record of scholarly academic accomplishments as reflected in number and impact of publications, history of successful research funding and serving in national and international societies.

Expanding and fostering strong clinical programs

Proven track record of leading complex clinical programs that focused on access, high quality and outstanding patient satisfaction. Must have experience leading within a competitive clinical environment and the vision necessary to lead a faculty into new areas of growth. Experience with reduction of cost of care (length of stay, appropriate use of facilities and resources).

Growing research programs

Proven track record of leading a successful research program, either clinical or lab-based, that led to significant growth in research funding and publications. Must be capable of defining the research vision of the department and provide experience in basic research and grant mentorship.

Successful administrative experience as a leader at an academic institution

Experience as a division chief, vice chair or chair of medicine, developing academic leaders and mentoring junior faculty while identifying and recruiting diverse students, trainees, staff and faculty. Knowledge of the complex financial pressures facing academic medical centers and healthcare delivery organizations. Knowledge of the complexities of delivering care in a metropolitan area with heightened competition (access, patient satisfaction). Experience with reduction of cost of care (length of stay, appropriate use of facilities and resources).

MD degree and board certification in internal medicine

Licensed or eligible for medical licensing in Ohio.
